On today's Select, we have SAUD, a veteran DJ hailing from Belgrade, Serbia, recognised for his multicoloured hypersonics, blending hardcore breakbeat patterns with contemporary gradients that gravitate towards a regenerated form of rhythmic psychedelia. He is also the co-founder of Belgradie-based famed rave platform SUTRA, which has brought a roster of acclaimed producers the likes of Gabber Modus Operandi, ZULI, Abadir, Aisha Devi, Mumdance, Batuu, Lee Gamble, Flore and more, to Serbia's clubbing scene over the last 7 years. Besides running SUTRA, SAUD was featured on Boiler Room x Belgrade. He has also played in various clubs and venues across the globe, from NYC, Berlin, and France, to Austria, Belgium, Norway, Poland, and Beirut, just to name a few. In 2023, he also launched his own club in New Belgrade called Živa. For our 289th Select, SAUD shares the set he played at his club Živa's season-opening party that took place earlier this year, featuring Kuwaiti producer Van Boom on the lineup. The set, a whirlwind of saturated bass sounds, razor-sharp electro, distorted drum patterns and vocal samples, features tunes by the likes of 3Phaz and Van Boom. “This one is dedicated to my lovely people in Beirut, whom I think of every passing hour,” SAUD tells SceneNoise.
"I'm a noodler." The vaunted experimental producer and DJ discusses his playful approach to engaging with philosophy and making art live at Atonal's OPENLESS in Berlin. British artist Lee Gamble has long been captivating listeners with high concept dance music. A loyal affiliate of Kode9's Hyperdub label, Gamble—whose work sits somewhere at the intersection of philosophy, computer music and sound art—has been building weird and wonderful musical worlds that have shot him to experimental stardom since the early 2010s. In this RA Exchange recorded live from Hard Wax at the one-off event Atonal OPENLESS, Gamble meditates on his penchant for eschewing conventions, beginning with growing up in the countercultural, working class hub of Birmingham. Gamble reflects on the first time he experienced what's called "future shock," a reference to a book by the same name written by sci-fi author Alvin Toffler. This set him on the pursuit of finding and making music that had a similarly bizarre quality. Gamble isn't just a producer but an avid admirer and connoisseur of critical theory, and he also discusses the thinkers who have informed his production (and even his approach to DJing), as well as his recent interest in the ethics and applications of AI and deep fakes, which he explores in a touching full-length, Models. Listen to the episode in full.

Another bumper episode to bring us into the holiday season, as we're joined again by Jacqueline Codiga, aka DJ Horse Jeans, of music writing, promoting and podcasting fame. We've got two returning faces in Keith Rankin, who's solo project Giant Claw we've covered, on production duty for death's dynamic shoud's Faith in Persona, and our eternal object of fascination Daniel Lopatin, who we're talking about for a third (!!) time with the new OPN album, Again. Also we finally figure out what the hell is going on with all that AI business through Lee Gamble's new record Models. Next episode is our end of year wrap-up so, get hyped for that x You can find Jackie on twitter @Horse_Jeans, her writing Everywhere and her contributions to the Indieheads pod in your podcast player of choice. Imagine a world where club beats meet experimental sounds, where ancient echoes mingle with modern AI voices. That's the universe inhabited by our guest, Lee Gamble. Paul sits down with Lee to discuss his latest album, Models, released on the hugely influential Hyperdub Records. Not only do we delve into the influences that shaped this remarkable piece of work, but we also unpack how personal loss and the global pandemic have left indelible marks on Lee's creative process.Lee's unique narrative is punctuated by the influence of Birmingham's drum and bass and techno history, and his journey as a DJ navigating the complexities of self-identity. We reflect on the intersections of technology, art, and emotion, examining how cutting-edge AI can both enhance and evoke a sense of longing within music. Lee also shares his insightful perspective on the powerful impact personal experiences and social class have on an artist's self-perception and creativity.Presented and produced by Paul Hanford Paul Hanford on InstagramModels by Lee Gamble is available here.Lost and Sound is proudly sponsored by Audio-TechnicaPaul's debut book, Coming To Berlin: Global Journeys Into An Electronic Music And Club Culture Capital is out now on Velocity Press. It has always been a struggle to sum up the sounds of Zuli. The Egyptian sound artist, producer and multi-instrumentalist is restlessly creative and unconventional in what he does. He can do everything from rap, IDM, footwork to hardcore jungle and experimental rhythms, and mainly on Lee Gamble's UIQ label. He's also done a lot for his native Cairo scene as co-founder of both the Kairo is Koming (KIK) and AHOMA collectives, and former co-head of the city's alternate music venue VENT which later turned into a club night and festival. He's now firmly established in the wider European scene, not least in part thanks to his excellent radio show on NTS. There is no messing around on this week's mix. It's a dystopian soundtrack that unites Arab music, Chicago club, European techno and UK bass. Every track fizzes with energy, prickly percussion or distorted drums. It's intricate yet heavy, dense yet atmospheric and the warped designs and contorted rhythms make an art form of physicality.
In this episode of INSIGHTS, we are joined by Warren Jones and Parker Black aka Prison Religion, who are responsible the most sonically abrasive and intense albums we have ever covered on Awake All Hours. Finding a spiritual home on Lee Gamble's boundary pushing UIQ imprint, ‘Hard Industrial BOP' is a 22 minute storm channeling savage noise, industrial hip-hop and gnarled electronics, all delivered with the energy of hardcore punk.Over the course of this interview, Warren and Parker discuss the Richmond noise, rap and hardcore scenes, jumping out of windows, getting into electronic music, M.I.A's ‘Paper Planes', boundary pushing genres and artists, their creative process, subverting subversive music, writing 'Hard Industrial BOP', finding a home on UIQ, working with producer S280F and the significance of a 1956 Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers album.Special thanks to Warren Jones, Parker Black and UIQ for allowing the use of clips from ‘Banshee, Pale Fire, Landing' and ‘ Brick Dust' at the beginning and end of this episode.—SUPPORT PRISON RELIGION:Bandcamp: uiqmusic.bandcamp.com/album/hard-ind…b-o-p-uiqlp007Instagram: www.instagram.com/prisonreligion/—SUPPORT THE ARTISTS DISCUSSED:UIQ: uiqmusic.bandcamp.comAndy Stott: boomkat.com/artists/andy-stottdgoHn: dgohn-music.bandcamp.comDemdike Stare: boomkat.com/artists/demdike-stareS280F: s280f.bandcamp.com/album/28Max Roach - 'Freedom Suite': www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAzTCfZod4cArt Blakey & The Jazz Messengers - 'Hard Bop': www.youtube.com/watch?v=auV0IpVkZsE—SUPPORT AWAKE ALL HOURS:Patreon: www.patreon.com/awakeallhours Soundcloud: @awk-all-hrs Instagram: www.instagram.com/awake.allhours/

Bookended by sublime hiphop, this episode of the Independent Music Podcast takes us on a contemplative journey across the genres. From Portuguese pianist Tiago Sousa's exquisite new modern classical on Discrepant to Livingdog's tentative spatial folk sounds, there's a lot to sit back and settle in to. But we do also have a few tastes of experimental dance floor action too, not least Egyptian producer ZULI's pneumatic techno on Lee Gamble's UIQ label and the new record on Rocket Recordings from Goat-affiliated group DJINN. Tracklisting Angel Haze - Weight (Good Soil, USA) Tiago Sousa - The Myth of Sisyphus (Discrepant, UK) Pauline Anna Strom - Equatorial Sunrise (RVNG Intl., USA) ZULI - Keen Demag (UIQ, UK) DJINN - Love Divine (Rocket Recordings, UK) Humwreck - Burned (feat. Basura Toska) (self-release, USA) Colleen - Gazing at Taurus - Santa Eulalia (Thrill Jockey, USA) Livingdog - If I Let the Air In (self-release, USA) Steve Gullick & James Johnston - First Light (God Unknown Records, UK) YUNGMORPHEUS & ewonee - FistfulofGreens (Bad Taste Records, UK) Produced and edited by Nick McCorriston
We meet Bill Kouligas, the founder and label boss of the Berlin record label PAN which spans cutting-edge electronic music, avant-garde sound art, scuzzy noise and nauseating ASMR. Of all the labels featured on Relevant Parties so far, it’s probably home to the most extreme material – records that poke at the edges of what makes sound into music. Bill, who set up PAN in 2008, talks to Chal about the meaning of “difficult” music and the diversity of artists on the roster, from jungle auteur Lee Gamble to demonic pop sprite Eartheater. As well as digging into the label’s 13-year history, he also considers the post-pandemic future for underground culture. For this PlaguePod, we’re joined by guests including Simon Sellars, author of ‘Applied Ballardianism‘, DJ producer and UIQ label boss Lee Gamble, and author and blogger Matt Colquhoun (Xenogothic) to talk about the psychological effects of the Coronavirus crisis and the ever more alarming prescience of Ballard’s tales of isolation and quarantine, social breakdown, inner space, and the psychologically debilitating yet possibly liberating liberating effects of living through catastrophe. With soothing ASMR readings from Sellars, Ballard, and others, crisis music, listener phone-ins, a reading from Reza Negarestani’s ‘Mortiloquist‘, and an exclusive unlive recording of the 2009 Urbanomic gig by Russell Haswell.
Next up in our series of recordings live from the booth is Lee Gamble. This one's from a steamy summer night in August during which we tipped our hats to essential UK label Hyperdub in celebration of their 15th birthday. In between a stellar opening b2b from local rave heroes Akanbi & DJ Temporary, and leading into a serious beatdown from label boss Kode9 (that started with Burial, nonetheless), Lee Gamble's set exemplified the wild-style, distinctly UK sound the label has been pioneering for well over a decade now. There's something in the air on special nights like these, and Gamble channeled it to his full advantage, resulting in a set that was nothing short of outrageous. It's a two hour rollercoaster through genre & tempo, spanning sub-destroying bass & grime, dubstep infusions, plenty of breaks and a hefty dose of freaky techno. Full of unpredictable twists and turns while always remaining highly danceable and exceptionally fun, Lee blew the roof off and the minds out with one of the most mental sets we've heard in our two years between the stacks. Big love to all steppers in the place for this one, to the Groovy Groovy crew for the support, to Lou for all the technical finesse and the Lee for the tunes.

Join us as we magically time travel back to the misery of dry January. Starting off with a dubbed out selection from the likes of Bush Chemists with Culture Freeman killing it on the mic, with some old Jah Woosh in the mix too, before we amble into some rhythmic excursions from Harmonious Thelonious. Things then take a bit of a turn to the ambient, with weird club and grime pieces from the likes of FIS, Fracture, Lee Gamble, Bloom, Logos, Beneath & Gaunt. The second hour dives into the more hype end of speed garage & bassline featuring Flex Kru, So Solid Crew, Pay As You Go Cartel and many more. The final twenty goes off on a rave tangent with some Shut Up and Dance breakbeat, some chopped and screwed Madonna vocals, classics from Messiah and Shed before closing it off with the Cloud 9 Mix of Hyper Go Go's High which features a bassline fully primed to mash the place down.
Ever-ascending love, walls of bass, deep listening on the Northern line. The London-based composer/experimental turntablist discusses three important compositions.

Lee Gamble is one of the most adventurous producers, label bosses and DJs in the electronic world. Over the course of four album projects and many EPs he has explored the ghost of jungle, abrasive ambient and textural techno in thrilling and compelling ways. Formerly releasing on Pan, he now heads up his own UIQ label and with it has curated some of techno’s most exciting new sounds. As well as DJing, he is behind a regular NTS radio show and tours a mesmeric live A/V show that always encourages you to escape and get lots in unfamiliar musical worlds. The two hour mix he serves up for is the freaky, left of centre post-rave adventure you would expect. It’s disorientating and non linear. Initially it focuses on texture and mood more than groove, then his jungle roots bubble up, and just as you think you know where you are going, Gamble pulls back and descends into bleak cinematic soundtracks. Unpredictable and wilfully contrary, like his own challenging productions it is a masterclass in sonic subversion that reveals more with each new listen.

It is a place where underground dance, conceptual art and experimental electronic music have been colliding in captivating ways since 2008. Although he himself releases infrequently (but keep your eyes peeled) the label has become a go to outlet for forward thinking sounds that range from jungle to dark ambient thanks to artists like Lee Gamble, African Sciences, Objekt and many more. The design of each release is done by Bill, who has a background in graphic design, and is what ties the whole ever evolving project together. Expect a podcast consisting of old and current favourites and of course a fair share of unreleased PAN material.
Turn your head to the night sky for this mix of spacey, neuron-spinning set of ambient and experimental electronics. New music from Lee Bannon, Amon Tobin, Lee Gamble, Phantom Head Trip, and more...

I'm back from Mutek with some top new tunes from Augustine Wrong, Lee Gamble and Jon Hopkins, plus an interview with Mount Kimbie and rarities from Rodion G A and CAT STEVENS. It's a strange world...
I love the end of the year because of all the lists that get posted all over the place. I love discovering releases that I knew nothing about. The folks over at Headphone Commute have started their mammoth collection of 15 best of lists here. Over at A Closer Listen they have lists for best field recordings, modern composition, experimental, post rock, overall, etc. and guest lists. Secret Thirteen has a ton of guest lists where I found a bunch of stuff I'd never heard of. There is a nice eclectic list over at Textura that is worth checking out. While cruising these list I came across some excellent electronic music. Some of techno, some idm, some dub. I found enough ambient/dub stuff to make me want to do a new dubby & dreamy mix. So that's what this new mix is, a collection slow beats with a dubby feel with some ambient synth washes to keep things dreamy. Lee Gamble, Claro Intelecto, Survive and many more top tunes sandwiched between a very real attempt to recreate a black hole in the studio. The engineer was not amused...
Lee Gamble delivers a great mix for the fourth special guest episode of ∆ICASEA SELECT.
