Oneohtrix Point Never with Gastr del Sol

Talkhouse Podcast

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got a fantastic chat featuring three boundary-pushing musicians that turns into a lovefest: It's Daniel Lopatin, better known as Oneohtrix Point Never, along with David Grubbs and Jim O'Rourke, who were known together as Gastr del Sol. Lopatin has created an incredible body of experimental records over the past 20 or so years. His woozy, sample-heavy early material had him pegged as the inventor of vaporwave, but he never stays in the same musical place very long. He broke through to a different audience with soundtracks for the Safdie brothers' movies Good Time and Uncut Gems, and Lopatin is also heavily responsible for the sound of The Weeknd's records, where he's credited as an executive producer. The tenth Oneohtrix Point Never album, called Again, came out late last year, and once again it found Lopatin utilizing a new set of inspirations, one of which was the post-rock movement of the 1990s, which figures heavily into today's conversation. More on that in a minute, but first check out “Again,” the title track from the latest Oneohtrix Point Never album. Featured on that track was none other than Jim O'Rourke, an experimental musician and producer perhaps best known to the pop-music world for working on Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and  A Ghost Is Born. But O'Rourke's cv is far too vast to dive into here, and the focus of this conversation is his 1990s collaboration with fellow musician David Grubbs in a band called Gastr del Sol. That duo burned bright for a few years, amassing a catalog that's difficult to pin down, ranging as it does from arch orchestral pop to more rangy, experimental songs. They disbanded in 1998, leaving the world on a high note with their poppiest yet perhaps weirdest set of songs, Camofleur. Gastr del Sol's legend has only grown in the meantime, and they finally got around to releasing some new-old material just this year, in the form of a combination live album/rarities set called We Have Dozens of Titles. True to their ethos, it's neither a standard odds and ends package or a greatest hits, but rather combines an excellent live recording—of what turned out to be their final concert—and songs that had been previously orphaned on various compilations. Check out “The Seasons Reverse” here, which is referenced in this chat. Speaking of this chat… Talkhouse conversations are usually more two-way streets than this one, but it turns out that Daniel Lopatin is a huge Gastr del Sol geek, so he ends up asking most of the questions. He's got deep-seated opinions and interesting theories on their music: They chat about getting into music, about specific passages in Gastr songs, about the idea of indie-rock as a genre, and about the time Gastr del Sol was asked to license a song for a tentacle porn movie. Oh, and Daniel calls Gastr del Sol's music trashy. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Daniel Lopatin, Jim O'Rourke, and David Grubbs for chatting. Myra, Dei & Mojo discuss the Weeknd's fifth album is both a sonic and thematic follow-up to After Hours. It also has him riding the cinematic and retro synth-pop sounds first explored in 2016's Star Boy to its zenith. This is immortalized by the A-list personnel behind the new project, from Swedish pop maestro Max Martin and EDM trio Swedish House Mafia to U.S. producer and film composer Daniel Lopatin, who goes by Oneohtrix Point Never, or OPN. You could argue that Dawn FM is merely a flowering of ideas that were there all along. House of Balloons creates chilly R&B out of samples of  Beach House, and Aaliyah and elsewhere seems to nod to the moody drums & bad vibes of Phil Collins classics and the bedroom antics of '90s R&B legends like Jodeci. Elsewhere, pop hitmaker Max Martin takes guitars and synths and transforms them into disco-inflected bangers such as the album's lone single, "Take my Breath." The rhythm guitars resemble a mix of '80s funk and Daft Punk on "Sacrifice," which was built atop a sample of Alicia Myers' 1981 track "I Want to Thank You." And on "Less Than Zero," a tender acoustic guitar opens a new-wave lane that we've never seen the Toronto singer explore before, a rare moment of sonic fun (it's also one of two tracks on this entire album that is in a primary key). There was even be a global early, live broadcast today on Amazon Music for those who are extra eager to share the listening experience with fans across the world. As we count down the hours until the official drop at midnight, I am extraordinarily thankful for The Weeknd's spontaneity, for I am sure we are about to experience music history in the making. Listen to The Weeknd on Apple music. Also, they discuss. Gunna has come a long way, solidifying himself as one of the most prominent hitmakers coming out of Atlanta. Though he didn't release much music last year, he appeared on several other compilations like Young Thug's Punk, Pop Smoke's Faith, Doja Cat's Planet Her, and many others. Now, it's time for young Wunna to shine. Additionally, he further explores the themes of people he can no longer trust and how that has changed him. In the chorus, he raps, "You know b*****s talk, but you were the boss, so we keep our business private." He backs up these lyrics by acknowledging how he has helped others with "I got some slimes out a beehive, I know they are dying 'bout it." Overall, this song is a coming-of-age track for Gunna and is a perfect opener for the final chapter of the Drip Season series. On the next track, "poochie gown," there is a lot of anticipation and beef surrounding this track. However, it seems that, while there may be a lot more behind the scenes of this track, the main point that comes to attention is his apparent diss at Freddie Gibbs—produced by Wheezy, this song bass-heavy track with Gunna delivering fast flows. Gunna drops the bar in the song, "Hang above the rim. I can't fuck with Freddie Gibbs." He even backed this up on Twitter with a diss that would eventually evolve into a series of tweets from Gibbs. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Joining Horacio are experienced international investor Mario Masrieh, Principal at Trivest Partners, which recently invested in Argentinian FinTech company Veritran; and Daniel Lopatin, Co-founder and CFO of tech consultancy ArganoUV. Daniel's company United Virtualities was https://www.7mileadvisors.com/transaction/united-virtualities-acquired-by-argano-a-trinity-hunt-portfolio-company/ (acquired by Argano) in February 2021, in a deal that was facilitated by 7MA. Latin America has a need and market for new digital solutions. Mario says that this was one reason Trivest invested in Veritran. “When you look at the unbanked and underbanked populations ... there's a huge white space,” he says. “Both the governments and the private sector need to bring the populations into the financial institutions, to create more wealth for the population and to support commerce.” The panel reviews the complexities and challenges that investors may encounter when moving into LATAM, including the diversity of the region, regulatory tax differences, and how to select strategic markets for your business goals. They also discuss best practices for working with the lawyers and accountants on your team. Daniel believes that understanding the culture of a country or region can be the difference between the success and failure of an acquisition in LATAM. “At the end of the day, your monetary success is attached to your ability to get together with them, and work together for the foreseeable future,” he says. “You shouldn't undermine the importance of cultural differences when you come into a deal.”

Oneohtrix Point Never - "Long Road Home" from the 2020 album Magic Oneohtrix Point Never on Warp. After scoring the soundtrack to the 2019 Adam Sandler film Uncut Gems, Oneohtrix Point Never (real name: Daniel Lopatin) returns to his roots with his ninth full length, Magic Oneohtrix Point Never, a nod to the Boston-based FM radio station Magic 106.7 that inspired his own band name. “I wanted to make a cohesive, punchy, 50-minute record that was very personal, but pulled from FM palettes that I was personally interested in," he told Apple Music. "I think it works really well as a metaphor for how I've changed. The things that I try to understand about my own life and being an avid musical listener and how much that's influenced me as a musician is kind of apparent on this record. That metaphor of transformation is something that I came to by thinking about the radio.” For today's Song of the Day, which features guest vocals by Caroline Polachek, he continues: “I imagined it as the beginning of the album’s journey. It's setting the thesis of the whole record up, which is sort of embracing transformation, even if it's kind of disturbing and the future is vast and unfortunately filled with question marks. But that's it. That's the game. That's where we are. That's who we are. And so, how to live alongside your incompleteness, instead of fight against it or to think that you can overcome it. There's no home you come to. There's just this kind of road, and the road is the thing. That's what that song is for me.” Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week's episode kicks off with a reader question asking for Steven Hyden and Ian Cohen's thoughts on the artists of the 2000's and 2010's that were hugely influential to the new crop of indie musicians coming out today. Each "scene" has its own central name, but Cohen is quick to assign roles of leadership to artists like Mac DeMarco, Frankie Cosmos, Alex G, and Title Fight. Hyden is also adds to the list artists like Tame Impala and The War On Drugs, who influenced a whole other sect of emerging indie artists with their psychedelic tendencies. The meat of the episode is dedicated to diving into new albums from Oneohtrix Point Never and Salem. In the case of 'Magic Oneohtrix Point Never,' Hyden wonders whether this will be the record that breaks Daniel Lopatin into the pop mainstream, with a track featuring none other than The Weeknd. On the other hand, Hyden and Cohen are unsure what to think of 'Fires In Heaven,' the new album from Michigan duo Salem, who The Washington Post called "the stupidest band on Earth" in 2011.In this week’s Recommendation Corner, Cohen is digging 'No Driver,' the new album from Swedish band I Love Your Lifestyle, while Hyden is tiding himself over until the return of live music with new live albums from The War On Drugs and Arctic Monkeys. The Weeknd is the alias of alternative R&B enigma-turned-pop star Abel Tesfaye, whose aching accounts of emotionally and physically toxic indulgences have translated to multi-platinum sales and Grammy recognition. Toward the end of 2019, after a handful of intermediary collaborations and soundtrack contributions, Tesfaye issued the first two singles off his fourth proper album. "Heartless," co-produced by Illangelo and Metro Boomin, topped the Hot 100, and "Blinding Lights," another Max Martin collaboration, went Top Ten before After Hours arrived in March 2020. The heartache-filled set, which also featured a handful of collaborations with Daniel Lopatin (aka Oneohtrix Point Never), became Tesfaye's fourth straight number one release on the U.S. and Canadian album charts.

Here I talk to editor and writer Matthew Shen Goodman. Long time Talk fam, Matt contributed to our first issue for which I will forever be grateful. Matt is an editor at Triple Canopy and frequent contributor to Art in America among a fistful of other cultural and critical platforms. Here we talk about why he dropped out of not one but two prestigious grad programs, circle around the question of the space for idiosyncratic style and interiority in critical writing and why fiction is starting to feel more and more relevant in the early days of 2020. We also get into some thoughts about the distinction between cultural appropriation and cultural exploitation, and what this whole coerced performance of identity really seems to yield. Also did Daniel Lopatin steal or borrow from the Akira soundtrack? Finally we settle into our shared identity as native New Yorkers and how those rougher edges can sometimes make it difficult to navigate less confrontational cultures, and why he finds MMA to be a specifically satisfying outlet for that gap. Matt’s a fascinating guy and this was a great chat. If you haven’t yet, definitely dive into his deep and continually growing archive or writing. http://www.matthewshengoodman.com/https://www.artnews.com/art-in-america/features/ian-cheng-simulation-ai-art-1202675838/

Adam Sandler is excellent as a New York gem dealer in trouble for gambling debts in this high octane drama from Josh and Bennie Safdie. I became a fan of the Safdie brothers, Josh and Benny, after I saw their previous film from a couple years ago, Good Time, which I reviewed on this show. Good Time covered a day or two in the life of a manic, risk-taking criminal played by Robert Pattinson. That was a propulsion rocket of a film in which each crazy predicament seemed to outdo the last one. The Safdie brothers write and direct their pictures together with screenwriting and editing help from their friend Ronald Bronstein. Their new film is called Uncut Gems, and its style and energy are similar to Good Time, but more so. Much more so. Adam Sandler plays Howard Ratner, a gem dealer in the famed Diamond District of Manhattan. Howard is always on the move, always trying to make the next deal, while at the same time always trying to get out of whatever scrape he's gotten himself into. He's a gambling addict, making bets on basketball games with a recklessness that is pretty close to being deranged. Married with three kids, his wife his fed up with his antics and wants a divorce. He lives in a separate apartment with his much younger lover (and employee) Julia, played by Julia Fox. The plot gets rolling when Howard buys an uncut Ethiopian black opal, a stone which contains brilliant differently colored gleaming gems on its surface. Boston Celtics basketball star Kevin Garnett—playing himself, and quite well, I might add—visits Howard's shop and wants the opal, but Howard has committed it to a big auction dealer. Garnett pleads with him and then Howard unwisely lets him borrow the stone for a few days, holding his championship ring as collateral, which he then goes and pawns for money to bet on the next Celtics game. Meanwhile he owes a lot of money to a guy named Arno, played by a weary-looking Eric Bogosian, who has hired a couple of thugs to get the money back from Howard through threats and violence. Later in the film, at a Passover celebration at Howard's family home, we are surprised to see Arno in attendance. Apparently he's an in-law. Now, the plot description doesn't do justice to this film's relentless rhythm, as Sandler's character scrambles through one tense scene after another in pursuit of the big score, almost always talking on his cell phone, while trying to avoid his enemies. I've heard that some folks who don't read film reviews—and I realize many people don't—have gone to this movie expecting a typical Adam Sandler film, and ended up walking out. This is not a comedy. Now, once in awhile Sandler has tried doing something different than usual, such as, for example, Punch-Drunk Love or even Spanglish, and this one is played absolutely straight, although there's a grim sense of humor at times if you pay attention. In any case, it's excellent work by Sandler. Howard is a maniacally driven individual, liable to lash out or do self-destructive things when he wants what he wants now, and Sandler's intense, crouching presence really draws you in. The film is practically designed to raise your blood pressure, with not very much down time in between scenes of yelling and arguing, overlapping dialogue, intermittent fear, violence and bullying, all the while accompanied by Daniel Lopatin's pulsating musical score. The Safdies are very interested in urban Jewish life, and especially in restless and ambitious Jewish people, driven by neurosis and dissatisfaction, and they really capture that feeling in this film. Howard, and the film, seems always poised just on the edge of disaster, and the audience feels that something terrible could happen at any moment. This suspense reaches it

Hi everyone! We’re closing out the week with a doozy. Anyone who likes the Safdie Brothers knows that they can tell a hell of a story, set on the unforgiving streets of New York. In 2017, I took in their last two features, which include HEAVEN KNOWS WHAT, a heartbreaking, gutter noir look at addiction, and GOOD TIME, a pulse-pounding quest around the city starring Robert Pattinson. It was also their first collaboration with Oneohtrix Point Never, aka Daniel Lopatin, one of my favorite musicians. So, I was stupid excited to see today’s film, as long as my heart could take it. Before the review, we’ll have a promo from our good friends at the Comics in Motion podcast. Every week, Dave and Chris look at a film which made its way from the comic book page to the silver screen, and sometimes even back again. They look at the lore, the rendition, and everything related, delivering a fun look at each film. You can find them on Twitter and Instagram @comicsinmotionp and on Facebook @ComicsInMotionPodcast. They were some of our biggest supporters last year, and we can’t thank them enough! Subscribe to stay current with the latest releases. Contribute at Patreon for exclusive content. Connect with us over social media to continue the conversation. Here we go! ///// > ///// Today’s movie is UNCUT GEMS, the crime thriller directed by Benny and Josh Safdie, and written for the screen in collaboration with Ronald Bronstein. The film follows Howard Ratner (Adam Sandler), a jeweler in New York’s diamond market, who has run out of time to payback loan shark Arno (Eric Bogosian). While waiting for the payoff of a lifetime for a rare opal snuck into the country, Howard begins making a series of high stakes bets around town looking for the biggest score of his life. No spoilers. However, I am going to issue a content warning for gambling addicts out there. Gambling addicts may get very uncomfortable watching this film, mostly for its incredible portrayal of the rush. If you have a gambling addiction, please seek professional help. The Safdie Brothers like to deal with flawed characters, specifically those who live in and around New York City. Each character might be flawed in different and unique ways, but one flaw they all share in common is that they end up being the cause for their own downfall. It’s clear to everyone else on screen and clear to the viewers in the seats, but never to the main characters portrayed by the Safdies. Howard Ratner has this same flaw, a fact we could easily surmise from the trailer, but a point that is driven home when Howard is introduced, having just left one important appointment for another at his jewelry shop. Over the course of the next few scenes, we learn two very important points. First, Howard has an incredibly bad gambling problem, which is untampered despite owing a great deal of money to a loan shark. And second, this is Adam Sandler like you’ve never seen him before. The real genius of UNCUT GEMS is Sandler’s casting. The Safdie Brothers have managed to craft a character that fits Sandler in a way that doesn’t make it feel like an Adam Sandler film. And you know what I mean by an Adam Sandler film – that particular brand of attention-seeking late-night comedy which made him famous on Saturday Night Live, made him successful in the transition to the silver screen, and exactly what is expected when producers engage Happy Madison Productions. Everyone either loves or hates these films, but that’s not what we have here today. By contrast to the typical Adam Sandler film, Howard Ratner is the Star Trek mirror universe version of Adam Sandler, right down to the goatee. He even has a much darker profession that still employs his particular set of skills: grabbing and maintaining attention. By the end of Howard’s opening scenes, we’re ready for a very tense journey, one not unlike Voltaire’s Candide, as Ratner’s sheltered and privileged life is catching up with him. Also much like Candide, Howard is constantly rationalizing and re-rationalizing his actions, based on real and perceived score and riches, in a perfect depiction of the gambling addict trapped into the gambler’s fallacy. Around Howard is a mixture of real-life and fictional characters. Kevin Garnett and The Weeknd play fictionalized versions of themselves, the former focused on acquiring the opal from Ratner, the latter being worked over for a few sales by Howard’s assistant/mistress Julia (Julia Fox). Julia Fox’s debut role is incredible, a role written for her by the Safdie Brothers as the film was being written and re-written over the last decade or so. LaKeith Stanfield is also great as Demany, who works as a jewelry consultant to bring in the big name clients to Howard, looking for a break into the jeweler’s world. Idina Menzel plays Howard’s wife, ready for a divorce, and the only one concerned about their children by all measures. There’s even a host of fun cameos for Ca$h Out, Pom Klementieff, Trinidad James, Tilda Swinton, Natasha Lyonne, and Josh Ostrovsky. Howard leaves a huge, disastrous wake throughout the film, especially as the stakes climb even higher. And it’s a hell of a ride. The Safdie Brothers are the masters at maintaining tension, using a combination of long take scenes that maintain the tension, along with microphone dropping scenes that communicate a lot of information very quickly. Much like HEAVEN KNOWS WHAT and GOOD TIME, the subject matter contains a lot of explicit material, often without much warning, but always for great and useful effect. Incredible visuals are included that play with the refracted light within the gems, all driven by Daniel Lopatin’s excellent electronic score. It is a top notch film, with only a few moments throughout where the film felt fatigued, which matched up with Howard’s character, but not with the overall pacing. A very small complaint. My last thought is that I sincerely hope this film begins to help redefine what is meant by an Adam Sandler film. I think we got a glimpse of what might be possible in 2017’s THE MEYEROWITZ STORIES (NEW AND SELECTED), where Noah Baumbach was able to leverage Sandler’s strengths in a more dramatic fashion. He’s not the only independent film to take a crack at a dramatic Sandler, either. I actually wonder how many more films like this might have been possible if Paul Thomas Anderson’s PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE (2002) starring Adam Sandler had turned out better. Based on his performance and framing in UNCUT GEMS, I have a feeling more filmmakers will be willing to take a shot. UNCUT GEMS is a pulse-pounding, stress-inducing look at high stakes gambling addiction, New York’s diamond market, and the lies we tell ourselves about the future to justify our present. Adam Sandler is incredible as Howard Ratner, proving he has the range outside of popular expectations, and hopefully the first of many more dramatic roles. Fans of the Safdie Brothers will definitely check out this film. Adam Sandler fans should be ready for a much darker role, dealing with mature subject material, but will definitely appreciate his work regardless. Definitely recommended for all New York street-level crime fans! Rotten Tomatoes: 93% (CERTIFIED FRESH) Metacritic: 89 (MUST SEE) One Movie Punch: 9.5/10 UNCUT GEMS (2019) is rated R and is currently playing in theaters.

It's less than two weeks until Christmas, so it's only fitting that The Fourth Wall's fifteenth episode, an interview with the impassioned and intelligent “Uncut Gems” composer Daniel Lopatin, also known by his music persona Oneohtrix Point Never, would be preceded by a mini-tailspin of manic energy more stressful than the click-clack of going shopping at the mall a few days before the holiday – a fitting anxiety-induced morning that mirrors the adrenaline assault of Lopatin and the Safdie Brothers latest cacophony of emotions. We had a phenomenal chat with Lopatin, a man whose love for artistry ooze out of him once he gets going on a subject. His relationship with the Safdies has kept the same creative treadmill running since their previous collaboration; following their success with “Good Time,” the trio just kept on “tumbling,” as Lopatin put it. Their shared love for movies being part of what lets their collaboration sing, and their inspiration as artists willing to push the envelope is only growing. The Safdies assemble a temporary audio cut for the composer that's often stitched together pieces of records. “They cut it up so finely that it totally destroys the linearity of the original song, and they're really just using it to show you beats, and spikes, and dynamics,” Lopatin said. Their direction providing a conduit to deliver the color and texture for the film, tethering that color to a sense of character." The apotheosis moment of a collaboration between myself and the Safdie Brothers is when we're in the studio and they're reacting to a particular sound, not a melody, not any kind of musical progression, but a texture of feeling, a sound that they want me write with. It's about finding those tools, those colors, and presenting those colors to see if they perk up." If you've seen “Good Times” or “Uncut Gems” already (which, we recommend you do before listening to this episode) it makes perfect sense why this approach lends itself so well to the brother's style. “The scores work in a similar way,” Lopatin concedes. But the composer is always looking to coax different feelings out of his synthesizers. Sometimes, that involves looking back at history, and letting go of the futurist elements to his music. We truly had an awesome chat with the composer (Lopatin is a gentleman and a scholar) diving deep into his process and discussing certain song choices. He also told us a great story about watching the underrated hitman movie “Murder By Contract,” (one of Martin Scorsese's favorite pictures) with the Safdie Brothers. Uncut Gems is now playing in NY/LA. This interview was conducted by Andrew Bundy. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theplaylist/message

David Byrne is back with his first album of all-new solo music in 14 years. American Utopia, due out March 9 on Byrne's Todo Mundo imprint, includes contributions from Brian Eno, the Onyx Collective, Daniel Lopatin, Sampha and more. We kick this week's show off with the first single from the album, the polyrhythmic, party-pop song "Everybody's Coming To My House."Also on the program: NPR Music's Tom Huizenga stops by to share the mind-bending, genre-defying sounds of pianist Nils Frahm; Sylvan Esso takes an upbeat, carefree look at the end of the world; and the Boston-based band Darlingside reflects on childhood and lost youth with a beautiful and affecting new song called "Old Friend."All that plus the bent sounds of former Supergrass frontman Gaz Coombes, idiosyncratic pop from Trace Mountains (a side-project from Dave Benton of the band LVL UP) and the pulsing ambient sounds of German composer Niklas Paschburg.Full Playlist: 1. David Byrne: "Everybody's Coming To My House," 2. Sylvan Esso: "PARAD(w/m)E," 3. Gaz Coombes: "World's Strongest Man," 4. Trace Mountains: "Turn Twice," 5. Nils Frahm: "Momentum," 6. I hung out with Warp Records electronic, experimental, ambient, drone producer Daniel Lopatin aka Oneohtrix Point Never (or sometimes OPN) in an unusually busy alleyway behind Vancouver's Venue nightclub. He sipped tea the whole time to massage his vocal chords for that night's show. His latest record, Garden of Delete, started when Daniel got really obsessed with top 40 music and wondered what it would be like to create an entire album from the discarded song ideas of top 40 pop songwriters. The record ended up being about an adolescent alien meeting a made-up hyper-grunge band called Chaos Edge and their music collaboration. Which song on his record is about how absurd it is to ejaculate for the first time? How did top 40 song writers react when Daniel approached them for their discarded song ideas? Which is his favorite track on Garden of Delete? Which top 40 song is Daniel's current guilty obsession? Which Garden of Delete track does Daniel call his "psychotic clown" song? In how many different ways can our interview get interrupted by this abnormally busy alleyway? You'll have to listen to find out. Shock World Service 051 Long Distance Call by Jon Averill 01/02/2013 London, United Kingdom 1. Chromatics – The Telephone Call Some late night atmospherics to start us off from ‘Night Drive/Original Motion Picture Soundtrack IV' accompanied by some London rain I recorded. 2. How To Dress Well – When I Was In Trouble HTDW bring melancholy & starkness to the genre. Sounds more like the soundtrack to the walk home after breaking up with your girlfriend (suitable to this podcast) than champagne & gold chains. 3. Inc. – Swear Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis on Ketamine. 4. fLako – Mating Dance For me music is at it's best when it sounds unconventional, surprises you & demands your attention. fLako's afro-electronics ticks all the boxes. 5. Chosen Gospel Singers – Prayer For The Doomed This track was recorded at some time in the late 1950s & though a million miles away in process, to me has a lot in common with the previous tracks by How To Dress Well & Inc. 6. Daniel Bernard Roumain & Ryuichi Sakamoto – The Need To Be ‘The Need To Be' is taken from a compilation with the lengthy title of ‘DJ Spooky That Subliminal Kid* ‎– Sound Unbound Audio Companion: Excerpts & Allegories From The Sub Rosa Archives', which is to accompany his book of the same name. 7. Edgar Froese – Icarus Edgar Froese was a founding member of seminal German act Tangerine Dream. in 1978 Froese released his solo album ‘Ages' after major differences with his bandmates. According to Froese, it was recorded at a very emotional time in his career. 8. Dom Thomas – Gin & Tonic From the Finders Keepers & B-Music Crew; Dom Thomas blurs the lines between mixtape & original composition 9. Robert Ashley – Bruno Part 1 Robert Ashley is a contemporary American composer whose work traverses opera, experimental electronic music & theatrical works. ‘Bruno Part 1' is a hypnotic spoken word piece that is similar in tone to Laurie Anderson's ‘O Superman'. 10. Lee Hazlewood – Hands Ah, our old pal Lee Hazlewood is back – possibly the most featured artist ever on the World Service. Wouldn't you know it, poor old Lee is down on his luck & of course it's a woman that's the source of his troubles. Chin up son. 11. Hackman – Forgotten Notes This track is released on Gilles Peterson's Brownswood Records, named after North London's Brownswood Road, which my old house backs on to. A fact interesting only to me. 12. Vangelis – Multi Track Suggestion Van the man in rare disco mode, disco with his unique take on it as you would expect. This is from the 1980 album ‘See You Later' which sees him experimenting with electronic sounds for the first time. 2 years later he would take his electronic sounds to new heights & greater acclaim with the Blade Runner soundtrack. 13. Oneohtrix Point Never – Betrayed In The Octagon The Brooklyn-based musician Daniel Lopatin describes the track as "a stoned space epic about one really bad day in the life of an astronaut.", & that is good enough for me. 14. Robert Frost – Reluctance Another piece of spoken wordery by American poet Robert Frost 15. Julia Holter – Goddess Eyes (Echo Manor Version) Holter's music builds up from layers of patient, breathy voices & strings that seem to slowly sneak up on, rather than impose themselves on you. 16. Bill Fay – The Never Ending Happening Revealing itself behind some Arsenal fans (thanks lads) is ‘The Never Ending Happening', simply one of the most heartfelt & beautiful pieces of music i've heard in a long time. 17. Seti The First – Sugar To Sea Lion I've been a big fan of Seti The First for a while, only very recently discovering they were two Irish musicians; Kevin Murphy & Thomas Haugh. 18. F.J. McMahon – Sister Brother Released in 1969, following a stint serving in the U.S. Air Force. The album's outsider, lo-fi folk vibe pulls from his experiences in Vietnam & has become a top item among collectors & folk/psych lovers alike.
