Episode 11: My Language Learning Routine

Love, Joy, and Languages

Play Episode Listen Later May 16, 2022 27:33

In this episode, I share my language learning routine. (SPOILER ALERT: I don't have one!) After seeing so many gorgeous, detailed, color-coded language study routines on social media, I tried creating my own routine, but time after time, something got in the way, and I couldn't get back on track with what I'd planned. I felt like a failure and struggled with the idea that I needed a routine way of studying languages in order to succeed. After years of negative thoughts and feelings about my lack of a language routine, I finally decided to embrace my language life (and the chaos of my daily life in general) and have an intentional language learning non-routine. Routines are really great for building good habits, reducing procrastination, and navigating periods of waning motivation. By not having a routine, it's easy to become habitually unfocused, put things off, and give up when motivation is low. So today I talk through a few reasons why creating a language learning routine has never worked for me, and I explain how I make this work for me and still reap the benefits of routine. Accepting my language learning journey for what it is and not trying to forcefully structure it like others' journeys was the first step to making this work. In addition, I had to become intentional with everything I do with my languages. Intention is just as powerful as routine. Intentionally filling the spare moments of my day with languages, always knowing what I want to study, and being prepared to face those things have propelled me forward despite not having a study routine. Tracking everything I do with my languages and becoming intentionally clear on what counts for me in language learning has ensured that I acknowledge my hard work and progress, and I'm able to push through periods of low motivation while still respecting my physical, mental, and emotional stability. I track my language habits in Notion (no affiliation), and here's a copy of the template I use, which you can duplicate and customize with what counts for you. Links: Love, Joy, and Languages Habit Tracker (https://aquatic-koala-1a5.notion.site/ee68ef66a8ef4f07913c6182b02efb3a?v=ae69fd4e7a8845fe8d8e616afb9bfda4) If there's one take-away I've gained from this language non-routine experience, it's that every language learning path is unique and valid, and finding what works for you (no matter what anyone else is doing) is critical to success.

NOPE! The 'freebie' part of your marketing will NOT land you sales. That's just not what it's for. Your freebie is the start of the process in funnel marketing and it has a very specific purpose. And that is NOT to make sales! But of course...avoid it at your peril! In today's episode I'm going to tell you the truth about funnel marketing in 2020 including: What role your freebie plays if not 'to generate sales'? How to effectively use your freebie in the wider funnel marketing process to actually sell online. How to dramatically increase your online sales using a different approach to funnel marketing you might not have considered yet. And how to adapt your funnel so it's appropriate and effective in today's world. Now, rather than just 'tell you', I'm going to use a very specific example to help you understand this properly. It's a funny one but I think you'll like it! P.s. If you want to go further with this, I've just finished writing a really rich 33 page PDF explaining funnel marketing in a lot more depth, along with the three bridges we must build and cross to build a six figure online business. Strategy is a military term. It comes from the Greek word strategos meaning ‘generalship‘… I take it to mean ‘How can I achieve that outcome with these resources, this time and this landscape?'.   Being strategic in your business means having an approach that uses the resources, time and opportunity you have in a smart, albeit ambitious, way. And it means ruling out just as much as you rule in.    I think this is one of the biggest mistakes entrepreneurs make when trying to get to build a six figure business. They try to deliver on two strategies at once. But often it's because we just don't understand strategy or how to think about it! Can I be honest with you? I had depression for six years of my life. What got me through it wasn't medication or therapy or counselling. All of those are viable routes for tackling this horrendous and debilitating mental illness, but they couldn't work for me. The reason being I HATED my life! I hated everything about it and I was lying day in and day out about who I was to the world. The cure for me, then, was to face up to the truth of who I was and go on an incredible journey of reconnecting with my truth, changing my circumstances and sharing myself more fully with the world. In order to do that I had to face some hard realities, take total ownership of my own mental health (not an easy thing to do, I know!) and take some rather unconventional steps. In this episode, I'd like to share three of the things I did or learnt that helped me move through depression. I have been scared to share this in the past fearing the backlash but if I didn't know this stuff, I would still be suffering today. It's what I needed to hear and so I'm going to trust it's what you need to hear if you find yourself watching this video. I really hope there is a message in this video that gives you hope, provides some momentum or helps you think differently about your situation just for a second long enough to take action that will change your life positively. I want to make it clear, as I say here, I am not a Doctor or a psychologist or anything like that. I was diagnosed with depression in 2015 after six long years of suffering. What happened in 2015 changed my life and things have never been the same since. Parenting in the age of social media feels tricky, doesn’t it? I’ve found that a lot of parents feel insecure when it comes to rules about social media and how to approach it. We need to talk about it more and find ways to feel confident in our parenting in general, but especially when it comes to phones and social media. That’s why I’ve invited Dr. Sarah Sarkis on to the show today to start that conversation and help us navigate these tricky waters. Dr. Sarah Sarkis is a psychologist, writer, and performance consultant with a private practice in Honolulu, Hawaii (though it won’t take you long to discover she’s a Boston girl at heart). Her integrated approach is big on science and low on BS, empowering her clients to achieve long term change and growth through an eclectic blend of psychology, neurobiology, and functional medicine. She created her blog, The Padded Room, as a virtual safe space to help people manage the jarring realities of life. There, you’ll find a soft landing for life’s harshest truths. We’ll link to that in the show notes. You can also follow her monthly essay series Shrink Rap via her work with The Flow Research Collective. I came to this podcast with fear, guilt, & sensationalism and left with hope, confidence, and direction thanks to Dr. Sarah’s insights. We talk about all things Social Media: · Who’s on social media · What kids are being exposed to · How it affects them · Risks & benefits · Parenting · Virtual citizenship · What behaviors we model for our kids · And how we can approach all of it as parents who want what’s best for our children · And hope! This isn’t a doom and gloom episode! Tune in and get more comfortable and confident with how you approach social media in your parenting. Most of us have experienced jealousy to some degree, as it is a natural human emotion that acts as an internal experience impacted by our external environment. Jealously can either harm or protect a relationship based on your behavior, so it is important to understand how it works and where it stems from in order to best deal with it and make decisions for your own life. Today I break down jealousy into three main contextual categories so you can best understand why you are feeling the way that you do, and what you can do to help solve your internal struggle. We look at physical changes that occur in the body during times of separation, which parts of the brain and hormones are responsible for triggering your aggression, and how to best listen to what your body is asking for. It is important to listen to your body and let it act as a guide for what suits you best. By being aware of your triggers and emotional boundaries, you can handle this emotion with grace and pride often not associated with jealousy, and ultimately, better health and well being. How do you feel about jealousy and how it affects you physically and emotionally? Let me know in the comments!   In This Episode The three factors that create a perfect storm for jealousy Experiencing jealousy as a mental emotion and a physiological reaction Listening to your bodily clues to help you deal with separation Specific hormones that regulate your internal association with jealousy Physiological and chemical responses to jealousy that trigger behavior   Quotes “If you're in a relationship and you care about or value certain aspects, you may end up experiencing jealousy if something or someone threatens that relationship, even if it's unintentional.” (4:06) “[Jealousy] can also protect you, it can be a way for you to reassess your relationship and see what needs to be changed” (8:04) “Some of these ugly emotions like jealousy are really your body's way and your body-mind way to protect you and keep you safe.” (10:52) “Understanding your personal history, your relationship style, your personality, and knowing your triggers can help you handle jealousy in a healthy way” (15:36)   Links Love is Medicine Blog   Find the full show notes for this episode here Keep up with all things Love Is Medicine Follow Razi on Facebook

The emphasis on a word, the way in which pitch can tell us a speakers mood, or the volume in which we speak, are features in which we are hardly aware of but have a significant impact on how we interact with others, and the world. Often we overlook all of the scientific, cultural, geographic and emotional meanings behind the way we choose our words and communicate our feelings. While it is common nowadays to hear the prevalence of saying ‘no’, I argue that we should be saying ‘yes’ more often. While saying no can be a preventive measure, saying yes shifts you away from that fear. Today I want to help you become more comfortable with opening yourself up to the possibilities of saying yes. I am sharing some scientific background on the power of positive thinking, how your tone, pitch, and vibration affect how you communicate, and my ‘yes’ meditation practice to help you embrace all of life's possibilities. I want you to think about what you want to say yes to as the counterbalance to what you want to say no to. By becoming aware of how our words affect our biology, physiology, and consciousness, you can harness the power of saying yes and use your voice to create the life you want.   In This Episode Realizing that every negative no is saying yes to something else Why saying yes is more life-affirming and powerfully positive How you are affected by the words you speak and the way you say them The scientific intent behind how we communicate our culture   Quotes “Saying no allows you to put yourself first, but it is so negative, and I feel like when we answer our lives in a negative way, that's supposed to be empowering, it's still really negative” (1:21) “Nearly every religious text accepts that speaking is powerfully creative” (4:52) “It's just amazing how many things are happening at once when we communicate with each other” (13:51) “Remember, it doesn't mean you can't say no, but saying no to something is saying yes to something that is even more powerful” (19:38)   Links Love is Medicine Blog Find the full show notes for this episode here Keep up with all things Love Is Medicine Follow Razi on Facebook

Throughout his life Adi Mashiach has been a brilliant student, a successful doctor, and has experienced two successful company exits. Along with his wife Mirella, Adi has stepped into the world of VC with the creation of Mesia Ventures. Having just moved to the United States less than a year ago with his family, Adi has started to feel the familiar pangs of belonging trying to break into new circles and begin building a new venture fund. Recently, Adi has begun to wonder how to live his passion for helping others, and how to fit in without losing himself in the fire (something he’s experienced twice before in his life). In this episode, Jerry Colonna and Adi discuss how our intellect can help us figure out only so much in life, and how listening closely to our heart can reconnect us with the forgotten parts of ourselves that, once reclaimed, can sit beside us as we endeavor through life.
