The BiG Scuba Duo, Gemma and Ian chat to Lisa Blair.  Lisa is an Australian Adventurer, Climate Activist, Author, Speaker and Multi-World Record holding sailor.    On May 25th, 2022, Lisa achieved her latest milestone by becoming the fastest person to sail solo, non-stop, and unassisted around Antarctica, shaving 10 days off the previous record. During this record-setting journey, Lisa seized the opportunity to amplify her message of Climate Action Now and collaborated with a number of scientific organizations such as the Bureau of Meteorology, the Australian Institute of Marine Science, and the Seabed 2030 project.  Lisa's commitment to ocean health was evident as she deployed eight weather drifter buoys, one A.R.G.O research float, collected round-the-clock ocean health readings, and gathered over 180 microplastic samples, all while braving the perils of the world's most treacherous ocean for an astounding 92 days. Through her partnership with Ocean Ops, Lisa's expedition earned recognition as a United Nations Decade of Ocean Science initiative.   Social media and website links.   Find out more about Climate Action Now and Lisa's journey at   https://lisablairsailstheworld.com/ Follow Lisa on Instagram    https://www.instagram.com/lisablairsailstheworld/   The BiG Scuba Podcast is brought to you by Narked at 90.   “Beyond Technical”   Narked at 90    If you are thinking of moving across to tech diving or completely new to diving, Narked at 90 can advise and guide on the best equipment and set up for your personal or commercial requirements  https://www.narkedat90.com/.   This episode is sponsored by Sports Financial Services  https://sports-fs.co.uk/   They are specialists in arranging life insurance for active sports and hazardous occupations.  Contact them for a free quoteation.   We hope you have enjoyed this episode of The BiG Scuba Podcast.  Please give us ★★★★★ review, and tell your friends and share and like, it all makes a difference.   Contact Gemma and Ian with your messages, ideas and feedback via The BiG Scuba Bat Phone    +44 7810 005924   or use our social media platforms.   To keep up to date with the latest news, follow us:   We are on Instagram                     @thebigscuba   We are on Facebook                      @thebigscuba   We are in LinkedIn                          https://www.linkedin.com/in/ian%F0%9F%A6%88-last-325b101b7/ The BiG Scuba Website                  www.thebigscuba.com Amazon Store :                                https://www.amazon.co.uk/shop/thebigscuba   Visit   https://www.patreon.com/thebigscubapodcast and subscribe - Super quick and easy to do and it makes a massive difference. Josie Eastman was pulled into the boating industry by a family that believed she would bring a fresh and modern approach to it, and along with her strong organisational skills, business management training and team management abilities she hasn't looked back. Winning the Rising Star Award at the Raymarine Boat Builder Awards in Amsterdam in 2023 really put her Australian boat brand "Edencraft" on the world map which is her goal - to make Edencraft a world distributed brand. These strong and able to handle Australian conditions boats are based on an original hull design the story of which includes drug cartels and murder intrigue. It's a boat brand grown men aspire to and even shed a tear for. Listen as I explore with Josie her career trajectory and her passion for a brand that she holds with great pride and ambition to truly bring to all of those that have a love for fishing all over the world. Fast forward only seven years later and she became the first woman to sail solo around Antarctica with one stop. But it wasn't without complications, having a near-death experience where her yacht dismasted at sea. Still she kept sailing, quickly becoming the fastest woman to sail solo around Australia and then Antartica as she crazily attempted her record again, and beat it by ten days. All these adventures took place onboard her yacht, Climate Action Now, which she hopes will inspire others to take action towards sustainability. Australian sailor Lisa Blair has undertaken plenty of adventures - and gone on to break records and inspire a documentary. In 2022, Lisa became the fastest person to sail around Antarctica solo, non-stop and unassisted, something only achieved by two other sailors.  Her first attempt at that feat went on to inspire the new documentary 'Ice Maiden'. She says she examined the perceived risks of the journey - but her skills helped her achieve her goal. "Something like sailing solo round Antarctica seemed super risky - and when you watch the film, you'll see it was super risky in some elements - but if you've got the right skills and experience to back up those conditions and the right type of boat for the project, then you really can go on and achieve anything." ICE MAIDEN at the Doc Edge Festival is playing in Christchurch (19-30 June), Auckland (3-14 July), Wellington (3-14 July) and then nationwide via the virtual cinema (15-31 July). Lisa dubbed her sailboat “Climate Action Now” to raise awareness of small efforts by everyday people to combat climate change -- a fitting PR move, since Antarctica is among the world's most vulnerable spots to warming temps. In Hot Takes, Tim and Eben discuss extreme destinations they've always wanted to visit but never got the chance, and Eben breaks down the mood of the travelers on the ship as Antarctica first came into view.Relevant links: Lisa Blair Sails The World Facing Fear: The First Woman To Sail Solo Around Antarctica Lisa's Instagram Eben's Instagram Tim's Instagram

Hello beautiful people On today's podcast we have the phenomenal Lisa Blair. At the age of 25, Lisa discovered sailing. Impressively, a mere 7 years later Lisa made history by becoming the first woman to sail around Antarctica with one stop. Lisa then went on to lead the first all-female team to compete in the 2017 Rolex Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race in 16 years, before setting two more world records in December 2018 when she sailed solo non-stop and unassisted around Australia; spending 58 days at sea. Lisa is a keynote speaker, an advocate for awareness of climate change through her project ‘Climate Action Now'  and an author of the book, ‘Facing Fear'.What I personally love about this conversation is Lisa's strength and determination. She is a proud Australian adventurer, and it's genuinely awe-inspiring to hear of her story from being a girl from the outback to becoming a woman of the ocean. When Lisa made history by becoming the first woman to sail around Antarctica with one stop, this one stop was due to her boat dismasting. In this conversation she shares the truly terrifying and dramatic experience of what this means and after not seeing another human being for 72 days, the trauma that is heightened when you are in complete isolation now facing a very real life and death situation. It's certainly one of those stories that gets your heart racing. And now, coming into the final end of 2021, Lisa is heading out to attempt Antarctica 2.0, now attempting to not only achieve this incredible feat non-stop and unassisted, but become the fastest person to do so.If you are enjoying this podcast, please rate, review, subscribe, share with friends and family, become part of the To Be Human Collective, and enjoy this conversation with the beautiful Lisa Blair.Connect with MeMindset Coaching | https://www.jennahlouise.com.auInstagram Personal | https://www.instagram.com/jennah_louiseConnect with LisaInstagram | https://www.instagram.com/lisablairsailstheworld Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/LisaBlairSailstheWorld Website | https://lisablairsailstheworld.com

Lisa Blair is an adventurer, sailor, climate change activist and World Record holder who discovered a passion for sailing at the age of 22. Just 6 years later, she completed her first circumnavigation of the world as part of the Clipper Round the World Yacht race.  Since then she’s gone onto sail solo to New Zealand twice, to skipper the first all-female team in 16 years to race the Rolex Sydney to Hobart Yacht race and set two World Records in the process of becoming the first woman to sail solo, non-stop and unassisted around Australia. In the midst of that, in 2017 Lisa set out on her most ambitious project to date; to become the first woman to sail solo unassisted and non-stop around Antarctica. And to break the men’s World Record in the process! As you’ll hear in this conversation, that expedition did not go to plan. And on a stormy night 72 days into her trip and 1,000 nautical miles from shore, her boat lost its mast and Lisa had to fight for 4 hours to save her boat -- and her life. When I fly in a plane across a vast expanse of ocean, I often wonder what it would feel like to be out there alone, just you, a boat, and the elements. How would I fare facing massive storm pushed waves in the dark of night, alone and frightened as the ocean tried to consume my tiny vessel? What would I learn of myself day after day as I clear my mind of the worldly worries that consume us all, to focus on the cycle of "eat, sleep, sail".Lisa Blair can give us the answers. She speaks of the benefits of giving one's self a seemingly impossible task, coming close to failure and then making one of the greatest comebacks of all time. Lisa speaks bravely of minimising risk, but then when everything still fails, of how she found resolve and strength that I suspect even she didn't realise she possessed. Just under three weeks ago, the South African court increased Pistorius's jail sentence to 13 years and 5 months - a move Reeva's family welcomed. On the day she died, Reeva was due to give a talk at a school on violence against women and children - this was an area she was passionate about. So much so, in 2015 her mother June Steenkamp launched the Reeva Rebecca Steenkamp foundation to raise awareness of abuse against women and children not only in South Africa, but around the world. We hear from June Steenkamp on how life has never been quite the same since that tragic day. Bilal Fawaz is 29 years old, he has represented England six times and has the London middleweight title to his name but now he faces deportation back to Nigeria by the home office. Bilal explained to the BBC’s Azi Farni who went to meet him that he feels lost, like he’s trapped in prison on a dog leash. He believes without boxing, he would not be alive and how he has had to cope from a young age without parental guidance as his mother died when he was eight and he has never known his father. Levi Siver has reached incredible heights in more ways than one which no other person has ever achieved. The 37 year old professional windsurfer became the first person to ever windsurf down a snowy mountain in Japan, braving temperatures as low as -13 degrees. Caroline Barker speaks to the so called, King of Style to see where this latest inspiration came from. Lisa Blair completed the epic Sydney to Hobart journey within three days. It was her third time she had managed to complete such a feat but it was the first time in 16 years an all-female crew contested Australia's longest ocean race. It capped off a momentous year for the Australian sailor, who became the first woman to circumnavigate the Antarctic in July which took a gruelling 184 days. She tells Caroline Barker how she managed to achieve all of this and how her next goal is to encourage more women to follow her footsteps and take up sailing.

Lisa Blair, 32, became the first woman to sail solo around the Antartica when she completed her 184-day journey on July 25th in Albany, Western Australia. She had attempted to break Russian adventurer Fedor Konyukhov's 2008 record for the fastest solo, unassisted and non-stop trip but her yacht, Climate Action Now, dismasted during the night of the April 4th after 72 days at sea. Lisa was was forced to sail under jury rig to Cape Town where she spent two months while the boat was being repaired. It was a tough mental challenge for the Queenslander but after some moments of reflection she was determined to finish.
