Then, it's onto the interview. This week the guys fly the Hotel out of the UK, and to Washington DC’s Anxo Cider! The guys chat to Sam Fitz and Greg Johnson, first cracking their Hereford Gold which is a lovely collaboration with British Cider legend Tom Oliver, then onto their core drink; Cidre Blanc. The guys go through everything in American cider, from Gold Rush apples to the American palette, the counterculture and the flavour game, the regulations and state law, moving from craft beer to craft cider, and the Basque Country’s influence on them as makers. It’s a dense chat, good fun, and after a few 6.9% cans it put the boys on their backs! The guys then finish off with recommendations, as Martyn asked the listeners: ‘what are your favourite American and/or Canadian Ciders? Then the guys move on with one of Grant’s gateways whilst touring with Frightened Rabbit, and the problem with putting good drinks on the rider!     Godknows Ronnie Jr is our featured artiste this week. Soulful, Rasta vibes from this ultra-talented Zimbabwean now working and living in Cape Town. It's a cover of a classic track originally recorded by a giant. You'll get to know a little bit more about this Zimbabwean musician, comic, actor, host and performing artist later on in the show notes. For now, just listen to that voice and marvel. Bookending the show this week is the mighty Vulfpeck, drawing on such talent as Corey Wong and Blake Mills the band are a monolithic funk force to be reckoned with. They've recently successfully ended a crowd funding event with a nearly 4000% success rate. You can join in the fun and order the Live at Madison Square Garden vinyl package here. UK tour kicking off soon too. Listener Recommendation extraordinaire We have what is quite simply one of the best Listener Recommendations to date as well on the show. The sublime vocal arresting Fight Like Apes entertain us with a vitriolic tale of a woman scorned. Sadly, Tobin has more than a tale of woe to recount about this excellent band. No longer together for all the wrong reasons, they're another victim of the music industry and its capitalist snake eating its own tale mentality. Where's Peter Grant when you need him? Complementing the already stellar music on today's show is another cover from Australian surf layabouts Headland. It's a far departure from the original but no worse for it. Withered Hand executes some sombre acoustic wizard and Tobin introduces us to nocturnal music legend NYX Not. So, let's tread quietly, lay low and look across the prairie. Rango II Vulfpeck Remember Me Godknows Ronnie Jr I'm Beginning To Think You Prefer Beverly Hills 90210 To Me Fight Like Apes Deaf Forever Headland Radio NYX NYX Not No Cigarettes Withered Hand Animal Spirits Vulfpeck Godknows Ronnie Jr Right ho, Jamie, our Content Lead has been in touch with Cape Town Sound for more information on Godknows Ronnie Jr but maternity leave and the holiday season has scuppered most of it. So, when we receive more information we'll post it here. In the meantime here's what Cape Town Sound sent us over with the submission. "Remember Me" - New-comer GODKNOWS RONNIE Jr. debuts with "REMEMBER ME" - a unique interpretation of Rasta legend LUCKY DUBE's mega-smash hit in South Africa. Welcome to the first show of 2019! Happy New Year to all our listeners. We have some fantastic music and review for you this week. Tremendous Taste Dave from Preston, UK sends us his Listener Recommendation - The Decemberists with Carolina Low. Listen on to hear what we think of this. We also have another Listener Suggestion from Jamie - the quite unique one man band Shakey Graves with the track Roll the Bones. Unknown Mortal Orchestra from New Zealand give us quite a diverse bookend for the show. In addition, we have a Record Box Classic from Art of Noise and more from the truly wonderful Jenny Lewis (of Rilo Kiley fame). Let's bring in 2019 together. Track Listing Major League Chemicals Unknown Mortal OrchestraTry to Change Mother MotherCarolina Low The DecemberistsRoll the Bones (Audiotree Live Version) Shakey GravesClose (to the Edit) Art of NoiseAcid Tongue Jenny LewisHunnybee Unknown Mortal Orchestra More about Shakey Graves... Shakey Graves (Alejandro Rose-Garcia) is a very interesting character and musician hailing from Austin, Texas. We discussed in the show how Shakey Graves came about his performing name. In 2007 at the Old Settlers Music Festival in Texas, he and friends gave each other Indian guide names whilst sat around a campfire. As a result of a memorable evening performing music he decided to keep his. Unfortunately, we don't know what any of the other names were. He became increasingly known for his one man band set up, and played mainly solo on his self-released debut album (Roll the Bones). He was becoming increasingly frustrated at having to borrow high hats and kick drums to perform. Consequently, a close friend devised the solution of a modified suitcase that acts as a kick drum and tambourine stand. Shakey Graves Day He won Best Emerging Artist award at the 2105 Americana Music Awards. However, previous to this Mayor of Austin, Lee Leffingwell proclaimed Shakey Graves Day. Every year on September 9th through 11th Shakey offers his recordings, including unreleased albums, for pay-what-you-want prices on Bandcamp. Remembering Manchester's most famous busking son After listening to Shakey Graves we had a flashback of listening to Little Big Band in Manchester in the 1980's. Because of this, we decided to look up Little Big Band (Rob Gray) and were delighted to find he is still knocking out his amazing music. Firstly, Rob performs in more towns than just Manchester now. Secondly, his music is still as fresh and driven sounding as I remember it. I used to travel into Manchester as a 13 year old boy just to stare up at Rob on the steps of the Royal Exchange theatre in Manchester. Consequently, I learnt to play harmonica. Thanks for being such an inspiration Rob. Here are a couple of my favourite performances from you. Happy New Year to our listeners around the globe Yes! A Happy New Year to you all. Thank you for staying with us throughout the year. We really appreciate you being there. Remember - keep those listener suggestions coming in. So where are your listeners based? Welcome to the magic. Experience the masterful songwriting and musical genius that is Cat Power (Charlyn Marie "Chan" Marshall). With 10 studio albums to her name, she's a musical force to be reckoned with. As a result of Karl Lagerfeld seeing her smoking a cigarette outside the Mercer Hotel in New York she became the spokesperson for a line of Chanel jewellery. In addition, Cat Power has been featured in commercials for Cingular and De Beers. Her version of Space Oddity by David Bowie was used in a commercial for a Lincoln car and she was involved in advertising for GAP. Apple used her version of Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas in their 2013 Christmas commercial campaign. Furthermore, she has had numerous film roles. Chan also narrated the film Janis: Little Girl Blue which premiered at the 2015 Venice Film Festival. Track Listing The ex-love of my life - Cat Power Marshall has also had tragedy galore in her life. Before coming to prominence whilst working as a waitress in Atlanta her boyfriend died. Also at the time her best friend died of AIDS. This coupled with the abject use of heroin amongst her social circle led her to move to New York. She soon found a new boyfriend whom helped her to get a job as a waitress. Subsequently she discovered he was having an affair with the owner of the diner. A short relationship with model Daniel Currie ended in 2003 at a time when she was drinking heavily and abusing other substances. Three years later she started a relationship with actor Giovanni Ribisi. Consequently, she lived with him and his daughter in Los Angeles. They broke up in 2012. This break up coincided with the release of her ninth studio album Sun. In 2015 Cat Power gave birth to her first child but did not reveal the identity of the father. I cut my hair off three days [after the breakup], got on a plane to France, and finished the shit. Listener Suggestion of the Year - 2018 Loads of Listener Recommendations have come in throughout 2018 but one track stood out in particular. We wanted to recognise this and so have declared it our Listener Suggestion of the Year. Thanks for this wonderful suggestion Duncan, enjoy the distinguished award of being our Listener Suggestion of the Year! The playlist is broadcasting on 31/12/2018 at 09:00GMT. Keep 'em coming listeners! Listener Suggestions... We brought two incredible listener suggestions to you today. Jamie recommended Joe Purdy - Outlaws and Maddie came in with Viola Beach - Swings and Waterslides. Many thanks to those two for reaching out to us, we thrive on listener interaction. If you think you've got a track that would light up the show then please do get in touch. Joe Purdy - Kristine Joe Purdy is an American singer/songwriter who has recorded and released 14 albums over the last 15 years. Thanks to Jamie for recommending the track Outlaws. Record Box HQ has been exploring further songs of Joe Purdy's and has discovered this nugget - Kristine. In difference to Outlaws where Joe play the piano, this features him playing guitar. Joe plays both piano and guitar, along with harmonica, mandolin and banjo. If you too find Joe's subtle melodies and Americana themes alluring then you can find out much more about the man here. We are certainly looking forward to Joe touring the UK, although in all honesty we don't think he has any plans to do so. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZHoitCyaRk

Show's a bit different this week. Tahmeka's traveling for work, so I'm (Jeanette) manning it solo. I'm speaking with Léonicka Valcius about Canadian literature, working for Scholastic Book Fair and also the Festival of Literary Diversity that we talked about briefly in the last show. Léonicka also provides a reading list of excellent Canadian books/authors to check out. Show rounds out with a solo "What Are You Reading?" because I'm newly obsessed with Rachel Howzell Hall and needed to fangirl.
