What makes work meaningful, and how can leaders create that experience for their teams? Kevin is joined by Wes Adams and Tamara Myles, who state that their research shows nearly 50% of an employee's experience of meaning at work is tied to what their leaders do or fail to do. Meaningful work is the upstream factor that drives engagement, productivity, innovation, and the bottom-line results that organizations want. The conversation centers around the Three C's of Meaningful Work: Community – Creating authentic connections and a sense of belonging among team members, even in remote or hybrid work environments. Contribution – Helping employees see the impact of their work and making clear connections between daily tasks and larger organizational goals. Challenge – Supporting team members as they grow, learn, and take on meaningful tasks, balancing stretch assignments with strong support. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Karen E Osborne, author of the book Justice for Emerson. Karen is an award-winning and Amazon Kindle best-selling author of five suspense novels–Reckonings (award-winning family saga/suspense), Tangled Lies (award-winning murder mystery), Getting It Right (recognized by Essence Magazine as a Best Read), True Grace, (award-winning historical fiction inspired by her grandmother, set in 1924 Harlem, NY), and Justice for Emerson, a dual timeline murder mystery. Karen believes in generosity and giving back. She hosts a weekly video podcast What Are You Reading? What Are You Writing? supporting fellow authors. She is on the board of directors of Easterseals Florida helping the differently abled, is an Elder in her church, volunteers for several professional organizations supporting nonprofits and feeds the hungry and unhoused every week. Native New Yorkers living in Florida, Karen and her husband, Robert, have two grown children and three grandsons. In my book review, I stated Justice for Emerson is a wonderful mystery with a side of romance and a dash of historical fiction - and I simply loved this book! Without a doubt, I am a sucker for books that cross genres. Plus, it had a dual timeline and more than one POV. The main character, Aria, loves to serve. Her career puts her on the frontlines battling homelessness, addiction, and hunger. She's a go-getter, but she's not perfect. She has a chip on her shoulder - she hates her diminutive stature and worries if others see her as a capable leader - AND she's still grieving the loss of her husband - which means she's more than conflicted about the attention of two very different and very handsome men. Things come to a head when she finds Emerson, a volunteer and Vietnam Vet who struggles with addiction, shot in the basement of her non-profit. To make matters worse, she sees the killer, and he threatens her and everyone she loves. The descriptions of those living in their cars tore at my heart. The romance stirred my heart. And the twists and turns kept my heart racing. It's a story you won't want to miss! 'I didn't believe that I'd stalked my partner.' In episode 101, we speak with debut author Khin Myint about the multiple strands of biography he explores in his memoir Fragile Creatures. One of these is the sudden and extreme betrayal he faced from his ex-partner, who accused him of stalking her. We also discuss the ambiguous illness his sister Theda lived with for years, at times diagnosed as depression, CFS/ME and chronic Lyme disease, and how she chose to end her life after thirteen years of symptoms and divisiveness. We also consider whether our societal silence around suicide is potentially contribuiting to its rise. Khin also describes how he came to understand masculinity as a shadow, a pressure that follows men and ultimately shapes them. He asks, 'What is this pressure that socialises boys to adhere to some of these toxic expectations of maleness?' Fragile Creatures is a must-read memoir, and this conversation is only the tip of more than one culturally urgent conversation. Plus in What Are You Reading, we chat about a surprising number of speculative fiction titles. Khin Myint is an author based in Perth. His writing has appeared in The Sydney Morning Herald, Liminal and The West Australian, and more. He was selected as one of ten participants in the Wheeler Centre's Next Chapter scheme in 2021. His debut memoir is Fragile Creatures. She works as an accountant and as a server at a restaurant. She has one son and a dog. Stephanie enjoys reading both for fun and for a podcast she has: So, What Are You Reading?, and she has recently picked up paddleboarding. Stephanie had her first drink when she was 16 and had a bad experience and said she wasn't going to do it again. She drank very sporadically until she moved to Washington with her son's father. After they broke up, she moved into an apartment on her own and felt like alcohol was her only friend. She progressed from wine to harder alcohol over time and began to try and put parameters on her drinking. After a while, Stephanie realized that drinking wasn't what she was supposed to be doing. She started recognizing that she wasn't present for her son. Her anxiety was terrible, and she had issues with remembering things from the night before which made it worse. But Stephanie says she enjoyed the chaos that came with the drinking escapades, even though it was making her life harder than it needed to be. She got to the point that she didn't want to do anything. When Stephanie's current boyfriend did a Dry January in 2021, Stephanie joined him but says she white knuckled through it and drank as soon as February 1st came. That was when she started questioning what the point of drinking was. She had some very negative events in her last year of drinking to the point that on January 1st, 2023, she decided enough was enough. During the first 30 days she binged on podcasts and YouTube videos. She started journalling, doing puzzles and playing board games with her son. Stephanie has been able to get into grad school, is able to plan vacations and try a lot of new things. Reading, exercise, and time outdoors have become very important to Stephanie. Stephanie's favorite resources: The Sober Café (Facebook group), Recovery Elevator and other recovery podcasts, Stephanie's parting piece of guidance: if alcohol is impacting you in a negative way just take it out for 100 days. [49:27] Closing thoughts: If you're not ready to quit drinking, none of the information we covered today is going to land, if you are ready, it doesn't matter what we cover. Focus on the similarities and not the differences. Instagram - We regularly feature content here – often with goats! And this is where ProFM comes in because it bridges the gap between the operations—the tactical and the strategic level—particularly when we look at the asset management model.” - Keith Spencer, (11:01)“When we touched on the cross-functional competencies and showed as far as we've reached into business management and seeing it all the while coming from asset management, coming from strategic management, coming into business management—Those cross-functional areas are needed, are necessary, and are key tools to effectively be facility managers in the workplace.” - Kristed Herbert, (15:28)“[ProFM] is so practical. You can literally take an example that is being presented in any module and adapt it and use it in your facility. It's so comprehensive. It's so all-inclusive that you literally have at your disposal a textbook that could guide you along your implementation of your facility management or improve upon what you already have.” - Kristed Herbert, (17:35)“We're in the people business. And we have to put ourselves in the user's experience to be able to bring delivery on key things. And there's no better way to appreciate FM unless you have that value for people. Everything we do…[is] going to affect your users. And you want to ensure that you are affecting a system that is safe, is reliable, is competent, and at the end of the day, is adding to the organization's bottom line.” - Kristed Herbert, (30:08)
Almost a decade ago, I met Karen Osborne at my first ever CASE conference. Today, I have privilege of picking her brain on two very important topics—board diversification and stewardship. Karen and I agree that the overall thread we continue to pull in this episode is about being planful with everything you do. Karen believes in the power of philanthropy, generosity, and service. She built her career around these passions not only as a major and principal gifts officer, vice president, speaker, teacher, consultant, and coach, but also as a donor, volunteer, and board member. For eighteen of Karen's forty-four professional years, she held leadership positions–Director of Major Gifts, Director of Development, and VP for College Advancement–at colleges and universities. For the past 26 years, Karen served first as President and now Senior Strategist at The Osborne Group, an international management, consulting, and training firm. Karen enjoys a rich volunteer life. The Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) awarded her the Crystal Apple for Outstanding Teaching and Public Speaking, and the Ashmore Award for Outstanding Service to the Profession. In addition to volunteering for professional organizations, she serves on the governing board of Easterseals Florida. Karen is a suspense and mystery writer. Getting It Right, Akashic Books, published in June 2017. Award-winning and best-selling Tangled Lies, Black Rose Writing, launched July 22, 2021. Reckonings, Black Rose Writing, released June 16, 2022. Her weekly video Vlog, What Are You Reading? Welcome to Season 2, Episode 8! February 19, 2022 marked 80 years since the signing of Executive Order 9066 that wrongly imprisoned over 120,000 Japanese Americans during WWII. Of the ten concentration camps that the U.S. government created (and referred to as relocation centers), Tule Lake was the most brutal. For our main segment, we talk about the history of the Tule Lake Segregation Center. We also take time to remember Christina Yuna Lee, another Asian American woman who was murdered in New York. We close out the episode with a segment of What Are You Reading? We talk about Journey of Heroes by Stacey Hayashi and illustrated by Damon Wong as well as They Called Us Enemy written by George Takei, Justin Eisinger, and Steven Scott and illustrated by Harmony Becker. Both are comic books that we highly recommend. All around us, according to the Bible, are unseen beings— angels, demons and an entire realm of invisible powers. How much do they interact with us? Have you ever encountered an angel… or a demon? In this episode, we look at this powerful and exciting subject— Angels, Demons and Unseen Beings. **As a bonus section to the podcast, JIM MUIR will share his list of books on ‘What Are You Reading'?
