Academy Award-winning vegan filmmaker and former National Geographic photographer Louie Psihoyos joins us to share how he is using the power of storytelling to spark transformation for animal rights, human health, and environmental conservation. Highlights include: How The Cove, his Oscar-wining documentary and the first documentary to sweep all the film guilds, inspired activism that helped reduce dolphin and porpoise slaughter in Japan by over 90%; How his team's audacious projection events of endangered species on iconic buildings including The Empire State Building, The United Nations and The Vatican for their film Racing Extinction, received over 5.4 billion media views and led to laws that protect some of Earth's most endangered animals; How his third film, The Game Changers, a film about plant-based super athletes that exposes the myth that meat is necessary for protein, strength, and optimal health, triggered a 350% spike in online searches within a month of premiering on Netflix; What his Netflix Series, You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment, uncovered about the 8-week health benefits of plant-based eating, and how the results went viral; His most recent film Mission: Joy a buddy film starring his Holiness, The Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu about how to find joy in a world of sorrow has been seen by 10's of millions of people around the globe; Where Louie's focus is turning next: a new film exposing the destructive health impacts of plastic. The podcast explores needed narrative, behavioral, and system shifts for recreating human life in balance with all life on Earth. With expert guests from wide-ranging disciplines, we examine the forces underlying overshoot: from patriarchal pronatalism that is fueling overpopulation, to growth-biased economic systems that lead to consumerism and social injustice, to the dominant worldview of human supremacy that subjugates animals and nature. Our vision of shrinking toward abundance inspires us to seek pathways of transformation that go beyond technological fixes toward a new humanity that honors our interconnectedness with all beings. We have it in us to create a more beautiful, regenerative future that allows both humans and nonhumans to flourish. Dr. Sarah Bexell, professor of social work and co-founder of the Center for a Regenerative Future at the University of Denver, joins us. Highlights of our conversation include: Why captive breeding programs for endangered species are both cruel and ineffective; How the mental health of both conservation professionals and animal rights activists is deeply impacted by the ongoing suffering of both wild animals and farmed animals; How ongoing ecological destruction is causing eco-anxiety and eco-distress in students and some of the more effective classroom approaches to address it; How environmental justice differs from ecological justice and why we need to address both if we hope to create a more just, regenerative future; How Sarah helps students become aware of the role that human overpopulation plays in humanity's ecological overshoot and helps make the classroom a comfortable place to discuss it. His scientific work examines the study of species interactions in tropical ecosystems from California, Latin America, and other tropical areas of the world. Recent research highlights the decline of animal life (“defaunation”), and how this affects ecosystem processes/services (e.g. disease regulation). In this episode, we first talk about species interactions, and the role they play in evolution. We also talk about hybrid networks, and how they can be disrupted by human activity. We discuss why biodiversity conservation is so important, and how climate change impacts animal populations. We then talk about mass extinctions, and we focus on the ongoing sixth mass extinction. Finally, we discuss the signs that the sixth mass extinction is the result of human activity, and how it can impact humans. -- A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: PER HELGE LARSEN, JERRY MULLER, HANS FREDRIK SUNDE, BERNARDO SEIXAS, OLAF ALEX, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, JOHN CONNORS, FILIP FORS CONNOLLY, DAN DEMETRIOU, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ZOOP, MARCO NEVES, COLIN HOLBROOK, PHIL KAVANAGH, SAMUEL ANDREEFF, FRANCIS FORDE, TIAGO NUNES, FERGAL CUSSEN, HAL HERZOG, NUNO MACHADO, JONATHAN LEIBRANT, JOÃO LINHARES, STANTON T, SAMUEL CORREA, ERIK HAINES, MARK SMITH, JOÃO EIRA, TOM HUMMEL, SARDUS FRANCE, DAVID SLOAN WILSON, YACILA DEZA-ARAUJO, ROMAIN ROCH, DIEGO LONDOÑO CORREA, YANICK PUNTER, ADANER USMANI, CHARLOTTE BLEASE, NICOLE BARBARO, ADAM HUNT, PAWEL OSTASZEWSKI, NELLEKE BAK, GUY MADISON, GARY G HELLMANN, SAIMA AFZAL, ADRIAN JAEGGI, PAULO TOLENTINO, JOÃO BARBOSA, JULIAN PRICE, EDWARD HALL, HEDIN BRØNNER, DOUGLAS FRY, FRANCA BORTOLOTTI, GABRIEL PONS CORTÈS, URSULA LITZCKE, SCOTT, ZACHARY FISH, TIM DUFFY, SUNNY SMITH, JON WISMAN, DANIEL FRIEDMAN, WILLIAM BUCKNER, PAUL-GEORGE ARNAUD, LUKE GLOWACKI, GEORGIOS THEOPHANOUS, CHRIS WILLIAMSON, PETER WOLOSZYN, DAVID WILLIAMS, DIOGO COSTA, ANTON ERIKSSON, CHARLES MOREY, ALEX CHAU, AMAURI MARTÍNEZ, CORALIE CHEVALLIER, BANGALORE ATHEISTS, LARRY D. Where did we come from? Where are we headed? What is our world? Are we alone in the universe? When the mental gears really start moving, people can come up with theories that are downright terrifying! In this video, you'll learn about 13 of the scariest theories that'll make you question everything you thought you knew about your reality. TIMESTAMPS: The Great Filter 1:28 Higher dimensional beings 2:33 False Vacuum 3:23 We're living in a black hole 4:10 White Holes 4:50 The Multiverse Theory 5:25 Brain in a Vat 6:03 Roko's Basilisk 6:48 The Transcension Hypothesis 7:21 The Terror Management Theory 8:00 The Sixth Mass Extinction 8:35 The Fermi Paradox 9:17 The Simulation Theory 10:00 Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/... SUMMARY: - According to The Great Filter theory, somewhere out there exists a Great Filter. The main purpose of this Filter is to stop those civilizations that advance to the level of star colonization. - What if a 4D being was looking at you from their four-dimensional world? Just like a 2D person, you wouldn't be able to notice this creature in your 3D world. - The False Vacuum theory says that our universe exists in a false phase state, which means that it's just a temporary thing. What's more, it's only a small part of a larger universe. - You're probably well-aware that black holes suck in everything around them. But what happens to the stuff it engulfs? What if a black hole already swallowed us up long ago? Surprisingly, some physicists deem this theory pretty plausible. - While black holes engulf all matter so that even light can't escape, white holes are quite the opposite. These formations are believed to spit out everything that black holes suck in. - The Multiverse theory claims that there might be countless other realities besides our own. - The Brain in a Vat theory says that you very well could just be a brain in a jar. Something is feeding you false impulses, and you're hallucinating your whole life and reality. - Roko's Basilisk is a hypothesis that some future super-powerful artificial intellect can retroactively punish people who struggled against it in the past (which is our present) or even those who did nothing to help bring it about. - The Transcension Hypothesis states that a civilization eventually gets to a certain intellectual level. - According to the Terror Management theory, everything we do comes from the fear of death. Our wishes and motivation are based on just one thing, and it's the idea that one day we will stop existing. - The Sixth Mass Extinction theory is probably the most horrifying. Yet, unfortunately, it's the most probable scenario. Some biologists believe that humanity is headed for or already passing through the sixth mass extinction - The Fermi Paradox theory explains why we probably wouldn't recognize an advanced alien civilization even if it was right under our nose. - According to the Simulation theory, we all live in an incredibly complex computer game. #spacefacts #blackhole #greatfilter Subscribe to Bright Side : https://goo.gl/rQTJZz ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Our Social Media: Facebook: / brightside Instagram: / brightgram 5-Minute Crafts Youtube: https://www.goo.gl/8JVmuC ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For more videos and articles visit: http://www.brightside.me/ Learn more about your ad choices. The carbon cycle is more dangerous than an asteroid. An asteroid killed the dinosaurs but unstable carbon cycles caused the worse mass extinctions in earth's history—and we are putting carbon dioxide into the air at a rate the earth has never seen before.I'm joined by science journalist Peter Brannen, author of The Ends of the World, to discuss how the carbon cycle has caused five out of the six mass extinction events — with the worst taking 10 million years for the planet to recover. Peter says all the drivers point that we are hurtling towards a sixth mass extinction if we don't change rapidly change course, an event totally unprecedented in its man-made nature. This is an experiment in planetary systems going horribly wrong. We still have time to stop. If we don't, the results could change the planet beyond recognition. Is The World on The Brink of Its Sixth Mass Extinction? The world has witnessed five mass extinctions, and it is estimated that the world is on the brink of a sixth, largely attributed to human activities. Factors such as deforestation, overhunting, and excessive consumption have led to the destruction of habitats and the irreversible loss of countless species. This impending extinction event is projected to surpass even the impact of the asteroid strike some 60 million years ago.
While we are being told there are too many people on the planet and the Malthusian elite wish to depopulate with the use of dangerous pharmaceuticals and genetically altered foods, the remainder of those on the planet will have the option to leave Earth or make transfiguration to being something more than human — or post-human through the process of transhumanism. The Sixth Mass Extinction is underway as they are now preparing us for future pandemics because of rampant viruses that are being created in a lab. Furthermore, there's an increase in children born with rare mutations because of chemicals, pesticides, fumigants, and a plethora of other toxins. How do we counter against this soulless and dystopian agenda? Tonight on Ground Zero (7-10pm, pacific time,) Clyde Lewis talks about PLANET OF THE BEAUTIFUL MUTANTS. Sixth Mass Extinction Where have all the animals gone? Collaborators from Mexico and the US provide added evidence that we are entering a sixth mass extinction—triggered by human damage to the environment. The impact of the loss of species and the collapse of ecosystems could be much more devastating to humanity than climate change. How should Christians respond to the sixth mass extinction? In this episode, biochemist Fuz Rana discusses the latest insights into large-scale species loss, explores the biblical basis for Christian environmentalism, and makes the case that the Christian story provides explanatory power for the extent of the damage that humans are causing to ecosystems around the world. Dr. Bruce Lipton is a renowned cellular biologist and author whose groundbreaking research has revolutionized our understanding of the connection between our perception and genetics. Through his work, Dr. Lipton has challenged the conventional belief that our genes solely determine our health and destiny. His research highlights the profound impact our thoughts and perceptions have on our biology. According to Dr. Lipton, the way we perceive and interpret our circumstances directly influences the behavior of our cells and, subsequently, our overall health and well-being.Lipton's findings suggest that positive and empowering beliefs can trigger favorable genetic expressions, leading to improved immune responses, increased energy levels, and better overall health. Conversely, negative or stressful thoughts can activate genes associated with illness, creating a fertile ground for diseases to manifest.Dr. Bruce Lipton's work serves as a reminder of the incredible power we hold in shaping our own destinies. It emphasizes the importance of adopting a positive mindset and cultivating a healthy perception of life to promote a healthier, more vibrant existence. This groundbreaking understanding bridges the gap between mind and body, empowering us to take charge of our health and harness the transformative potential of our thoughts. In this interview with Bruce Lipton, you'll discover:-The Sixth Mass Extinction, and why chaos can be the best thing for humanity!...01:30-We can start building a better version of civilization...08:00-A life out of harmony activates unhealthy genes, dis-ease, cancer, etc...11:00-Make yourself the master, rather than the victim...13:30-How do we begin to shift our mindset, our thoughts, etc. and in turn our genetic disposition?...16:10-Where are you "downloading" your behavior from?...19:30-The subconscious and conscious mind cannot dominate your thoughts simultaneously...25:30-Ipads and the mainstream are awful "programmers" of our subconscious...31:20-How we choose our perception of our circumstances affects our happiness and wellness...34:40-The two minds we all possess...42:00-Yes, YOU have taken the "Red Pill" a la The Matrix...46:00-Bruce gives a ringing endorsement of our beloved host, Jennifer...52:00-And much more...Resources mentioned:Bruce's websiteBruce's Community for Conscious EvolutionThe Biology of Belief by Dr. Bruce LiptonAbout the guest:Instagram Bruce's YouTubeBruce H. Hello and welcome to Cause of Death – 100 Seconds to Midnight. I'm your host, Jackie Moranty. In the last 50 years we've lost more than 4,000 species that are vital to their habitats. These animals played an important role in the support of their ecosystems. Some were predators and some were prey, but they all had one natural enemy: Man. As humans grew in numbers, these animals were overhunted, exposed to pesticides, and driven into smaller and smaller habitats. The land was needed for the King of the Beasts. It's 90 seconds to midnight, and our wildlife suffers under the heavy burden of human encroachment. From logging to drilling for oil, overdevelopment of wild lands to water diversion, animals are disappearing, never to be seen again. Welcome back to Going Green, your favorite podcast for probing the pressing environmental matters of our era. In this captivating episode, we tackle an issue of growing significance - the purported Sixth Mass Extinction. Our planet's history is scarred by five previous mass extinctions, potent reminders of Earth's susceptibility. Presently, a significant number of scientists posit that we find ourselves in the throes of a sixth event, instigated not by natural processes, but by one species - humans. In this installment, we unpack the meaning of this proposition and its profound implications for our planet's trajectory. The suggestion that we're in the middle of a sixth mass extinction event, often labeled as the Holocene or Anthropocene extinction, arises largely from human-induced environmental changes. The basis of this assertion stems from the unrivaled pace of species loss being witnessed currently. Recent estimates suggest that we're losing dozens of species daily, a rate that is up to 1,000 times the natural or "background" rate of extinction. Predominantly driven by habitat destruction, climate change, pollution, and the overutilization of species, this swift biodiversity loss is truly alarming. However, it's crucial to point out that mass extinction events are typically identified via the fossil record, long post their occurrence. Hence, despite the distressing trends we're observing, it remains a subject of ongoing scientific scrutiny whether we can conclusively categorize this as a mass extinction event on par with the five major ones that Earth has experienced historically.

Professor Corey Bradshaw is the Matthew Flinders Professor of Global Ecology at Flinders University, Director of the Global Ecology Laboratory and a Chief Investigator in the ARC Centre of Excellence for Australian Biodiversity and Heritage. Corey is a master communicator and prolific researcher, having hundreds of scientific papers to his name. Here we discuss a paper Corey recently co-authored with Giovanni Strona, examining the extent of climate change on species extinction and the consequent potential for food web collapse. The heavy impact climate change and land use change have had, and will continue to have, on biodiversity really places us in uncharted waters – Corey puts a strong argument forward as to why we should all give a shit about biodiversity loss, and what we can do about it.This is Corey's second full episode and third appearance on the show – so if you haven't listened yet, do go back and check out Season 2 Episode 10 and his contribution to our Season 2 Wrap-Up for more of his wise words. In this episode we discuss:• Corey's background and work in Ecology• Biodiversity basics and the important ecosystem services provided• The interconnectedness of species and the concept of co-extinctions, zombie species and extinction debts• The concerning rate of current extinctions compared to previous mass extinction periods• Climate Change vs Land Use Change for species loss• Loss of mammals and birds in Australia and New Zealand• What the high rates of species loss could mean for humanity – from food shortages to political instability• Corey's hope for the future and what we can all do to cultivate positive changeTo view all the links to the websites and documents, visit the show notes on our website. Could it be that the universal realization of our spirituality will serve as the catalyst for a new era for the evolution of humanity? Might this be the key that unlocks the door to that “era of well-being” which Ervin and Fred have been heralding through their work? And more to the point of today's program, how can Near Death Experiences (NDEs) and paranormal activity provide us with information about the spiritual realm? In today's podcast we are joined by Eben Alexander and Karen Newell, best-selling authors and co-authors of several books, including Proof of Heaven, Living in a Mindful Universe, and The Map of Heaven. Karen is also founder of Sacred Acoustics, a therapeutic program utilizing audio signals embedded in recordings to help calm the mind to reduce anxiety and stress and improve sleep and focus. Dr. Alexander is a well-known neurosurgeon and the survivor of his own NDE from 2008. In this, so to speak, report from the afterlife, Eben and Karen speak eloquently about how NDEs and paranormal experiences provide us with valuable information regarding spirituality and the relation of the spiritual to our physical lives here on planet earth. From this information, we are also provided with information about the meaning life, and of death. It also raises questions concerning the maintenance of our spiritual health? And what does it mean to live forever?Sacred Acoustics:https://www.sacredacoustics.com/Dr. Eben Alexander's website:www.ebenalexander.com Click on titles for links to books:Living in a Mindful UniverseThe Map of HeavenProof of HeavenDR EBEN ALEXANDER: After decades as a physician and teacher at Harvard Medical School and elsewhere, renowned academic neurosurgeon Dr. Eben Alexander thought he knew how the brain, mind, and consciousness worked. A transcendental Near-Death Experience (NDE) during a week-long coma from an inexplicable brain infection changed all of that – completely. Memories of his life had been completely deleted, yet he awoke with memories of a fantastic odyssey deep into another realm –more real than this earthly one!Since his 2008 NDE he has been reconciling his rich spiritual experience with contemporary physics and cosmology. We are conscious in spite of our brain. By probing deeply into our own consciousness, we transcend the limits of the human brain, and of the physical-material realm. His story offers a crucial key to the understanding of reality and human consciousness. A pioneering scientist and thought leader in consciousness studies, Dr. Alexander has been a guest on Dr. Oz, Oprah, and many other media programs. His most recent book, Living in a Mindful Universe: A Neurosurgeon's Journey into the Heart of Consciousness (co-authored with Karen Newell), has garnered accolades from many scientists around the world who study the mind-body question and the nature of consciousness. His earlier books, Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon's Journey into the Afterlife and The Map of Heaven: How Science, Religion, and Ordinary People Are Proving the Afterlife, have collectively spent more than two years atop the New York Times and international bestseller lists. KAREN NEWELL: As an innovator in the emerging field of brainwave entrainment audio meditation, Karen Newell, co-founder of Sacred Acoustics, empowers others in their journeys of self-discovery. Using Sacred Acoustics recordings, she teaches how to connect to inner guidance, achieve inspiration, improve wellness and develop intuition. In her search for answers to fundamental questions, it became clear that direct experience is crucial to full understanding. To bolster her strong sense of inner knowing and alignment with her higher nature, she enrolled in a series of hands-on experiential courses to investigate and develop such skills as lucid dreaming, astral travel, telepathy, remote viewing, self-hypnosis, and different forms of energy healing. She developed a facile expertise in living through daily connection with universal consciousness using heart awareness as a central element. At international workshops presented with best-selling author Dr. Eben Alexander, Karen demonstrates key practices of consciousness exploration: heart awareness, intention, maintaining neutrality, emotional management and cultivating internal knowing. She is co-author with Dr. Alexander of their latest book, Living in a Mindful Universe: A Neurosurgeon's Journey into the Heart of Consciousness.

Animals and people have been living together for thousands of years, but the past 100 years have been extraordinary in the amount of change in those relationships. Why would you guess? Understanding the history of the human-animal relationship is key to the preservation of nature, and reducing the drastic decline of native wild animal and plant populations. It is instructive to look at the enterprise of extinction management today. You could call it The New Noah's Ark. The animals that are saved from extinction will be the animals we choose to save. Listen in to find out what's our criteria for what gets saved. Scientist tell us that the vast majority of species and their ecosystems can be saved with one bold proposal. It may seem radical — however, it may be more radical if we don't do it. Tune in to see if you agree.

Hazel Henderson was a tremendous intellectual force helping us make economic sense out of human connection and advocating for a green agenda to mitigate climate change long before many of us knew what these terms meant. Hazel was also a close friend and collaborator with our program's co-host, Ervin Laszlo—in fact, she was our first guest on the show. She was also a contributor to Ervin Laszlo and Fred Tsao's recent book which shares the same title as this podcast, Dawn of an Era of Well-Being. Sadly, Hazel departed this world on May 22, 2022, though we can be assured that wherever she may be, the strength of her ideas will continue to drive this planet in the direction peace, love, and sustainability. In today's abbreviated episode, our moderator Alison Goldwyn speaks with Ervin as he reflects on Hazel Henderson's legacy and their friendship. Please stay tuned for more episodes of Dawn of an Era of Well-Being: the Podcast. We will be announcing the release of Season Two very soon which will include such guests as Deepak Chopra, Eben Alexander, and Jean Houston. We are losing species much more rapidly now than in the last two million years! At that pace, we may lose a large proportion of vertebrates, including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fishes, in the next two to three decades. Modern extinctions caused by human activities is higher that the normal or natural extinction rate. This is important because it would let us understand if we are causing a mass extinction. In the history of life on Earth, there have been five mass extinctions – episodes where large numbers of species became extinct in a short period of time. All mass extinctions have been caused by natural catastrophes, such as the impact of a meteorite. We are the only species that has the capability to save all endangered animals. Paradoxically, saving them is the only way to save humanity. Series: "CARTA - Center for Academic Research and Training in Anthropogeny" [Humanities] [Science] [Show ID: 37904]

Is it Fact, Fiction or Speculation. The host for this show is Jay Fidell. The guest is Robert Cowie. Professor Robert Cowie, who recently published an article on the subject in Biological Reviews, helps us understand the evidence showing what would be the sixth mass species extinction. There have been five Mass Extinction events in the history of Earth's biodiversity, all caused by dramatic but natural phenomena. It has been claimed that the Sixth Mass Extinction may be underway, this time caused entirely by humans. Extinction is a natural part of life. Plants and animals disappear all the time. When one species goes extinct, its place in the ecosystem is typically filled by another. The so-called normal rate of extinction is thought to be somewhere between 0.1 and 1 species per 10,000 species per 100 years. A mass extinction event […]

Does it really matter if we're in the sixth mass extinction? Short answer: no. But it's actually a little more complicated. In this episode of the Stanford SciCast, Trevor Cambron and Keren Perla discuss the debate about whether or not we are currently in the sixth mass extinction, and what it would mean to be in one. We talk to Stanford's own Dr. Jonathan Payne, paleobiologist in the Department of Geological Sciences, about what the geologic record tells us about our current loss of biodiversity, and how knowledge of the past can influence our actions in the present. We also talk to Peter Brannen, award-winning science journalist and author of “Earth Is Not In the Midst of the Sixth Mass Extinction” about how to communicate the current unprecedented human-caused destruction of biodiversity, and what you can do to help prevent it. The big picture: ignore the sensationalist headlines, but take serious action against biodiversity loss. Extinction is a part of life. Plant and animal species disappear all the time. In fact, approximately 98% of all the organisms that have ever existed on planet earth are now extinct. Earth’s so-called ‘normal’ rate of extinction is thought to be somewhere between 0.1 and 1 species per 10,000 species per 100 years. But […]

Professor Corey Bradshaw is the Matthew Flinders Professor of Global Ecology at Flinders University, where he leads the Global Ecology Laboratory and heads the Flinders Modelling Node of the Centre of Excellence for Australian Biodiversity and Heritage.Corey was lead author of a recent perspective article titled ‘Underestimating the Challenges of Avoiding a Ghastly Future'. This paper discusses the major environmental issues that have regrettably received little attention but require urgent action. Anyone with a passing interest in the environment knows things aren't great, but just how bad are they really? Professor Bradshaw is not here to appease the masses with a watered-down message, but rather gives us a well-needed reality check and urges us not to look away from the mess we have created. An overview of this research was published in The Conversation. We are living on borrowed time by taking more from the planet than it can take. Scientists are no longer talking about avoiding environmental problems, but rather how to best deal with them. Irrespective of what we do now, the future is going to be ghastly – but just how ghastly depends on the path we take moving forward. In this episode we discuss:• How Corey's childhood shaped his relationship with the environment and inspired his journey to academia• The subject matter of Corey's previous books Killing the Koala and Poisoning the Prairie and The Effective Scientist• The silos in academia, lack of connectivity and why this model won't deliver adequate solutions for the wicked problems we face• The catastrophic loss of biodiversity and the detrimental impact this is having on ecosystem resilience• How humanity is driving the sixth mass extinction • Why the rise of the right-wing populist movement, the weaponisation of environmentalism and ongoing political donations have led to political impotence on climate change• The ignorance of wanting unlimited economic growth in a finite world• The potential solutions we can all consider, individually and collectively• Corey's must-subscribe blog Conservation Bytes• And a WHOLE lot more - there's a lot of knowledge dropped in this one folks! We hope you enjoy this important conversation and would love to hear your feedback! American Humane’s new groundbreaking documentary, Escape from Extinction, narrated by Academy Award winner Helen Mirren, showcases the critical efforts certified zoos and aquariums are undertaking to preserve millions of species on the verge of disappearing forever. As the first pro-zoo-and-aquarium documentary of its kind, the film takes viewers on a dramatic trip around the world and through time to explore the roots of the wholesale disappearance of species in our forests and oceans, described by scientists and journalists as a “Sixth Mass Extinction.” Importantly, however, the film also shows people that there is hope as animal experts, conservationists, animal scientists, veterinarians, bioethicists and others at leading zoological organizations across the globe work feverishly to pull endangered and disappearing species back from the brink. The making of this 90-minute film took many years, passion, and tens of thousands of miles of travel. From the producers: About American Humane Founded in 1877, American Humane is the country's first national humane organization. For 142 years, the nonprofit has pioneered many of the humane protections we have come to take for granted and today works to save, shelter, feed, and improve the lives of some one billion animals around the world. With 91 cents of every dollar spent going directly to programs, American Humane has earned Charity Navigator’s highest “Four-Star Rating,” has been named a “Top-Rated Charity” with an “A” rating by both the American Institute of Philanthropy’s CharityWatch and Great Nonprofits, and was awarded the gold level seal from GuideStar USA. The organization has also earned the Independent Charities Seal of Excellence, was awarded inclusion on Better Business Bureau’s prestigious Wise Giving Alliance Accredited Charities list and was designated as a “Best Charity” by Consumer Reports. This is a segment of episode #186 of Last Born In The Wilderness “Mainstream Psychology Can Go Fuck Itself: Managing Collapse Awareness w/ Holly Truhlar.” Listen to the full episode: http://bit.ly/LBWtruhlar Read her essay ‘Mainstream Psychology Can Go Fuck Itself”: http://bit.ly/2Uwfyjw In this segment of my discussion with grief therapist and community builder Holly Truhlar, we discuss her provocatively titled essay ‘Mainstream Psychology Can Go Fuck Itself,’ which addressed the ways mainstream psychology, as it is currently practiced today, largely lacks the framework, language, and tools required to adequately counsel those that are coming into the growing awareness that the systems we are embedded within are leading to societal collapse, ecological disintegration, and abrupt climate disruption on the global scale. Mainstream psychology “puts the onus on the individual and takes the focus off of the violent and divisive systems we’re in,” which in turn disempowers the individual from preparing, in any meaningful sense, for what lies ahead as we begin to experience the impacts of a fraying socioeconomic and political system (mired in systemic oppression and corruption), the catastrophic loss of species (described as the Sixth Mass Extinction event), a radically changing climate system (as a result of industrialization), and the likely near-term extinction of the human species as a result of these converging crises. Holly, in her work, seeks to make use of the tools provided in mainstream psychology, and incorporate Radical Attunement Work (RAW), which cultivates "a deep awareness of people and systems in order to fundamentally shift exploitative ways of being towards reciprocal relationship, collective liberation, and communities of care.” As Holly says in her essay “we don’t have time for this shit. We have a small window in which we MAY be able to learn the skills needed to co-regulate with each other and organize for the needed revolution (or end-of-life care for our species).” The stakes really are this high. Holly Truhlar is a lawyer, grief therapist, and community builder. She’s integrated her doctorate in law with a masters in transpersonal counseling psychology to create a model for personal and collective liberation. This model, called Radical Attunement Work (RAW), moves people and groups from dominating and exploitative ways of being into attuned and transformational relationships. Her work lies at the convergence of ancestral grief, collective trauma, conscious collapse, and social justice. She’s currently practicing and researching social technologies, such as ritual and Deep Democracy work, that foster large-scale trauma resolution and collective nervous system regulation. [Intro: 12:45] In this episode, I speak with lawyer, grief therapist, and community builder Holly Truhlar. We discuss her provocatively titled essay ‘Mainstream Psychology Can Go Fuck Itself,’ which addressed the ways mainstream psychology, as it is currently practiced today, largely lacks the framework, language, and tools required to adequately counsel those that are coming into the growing awareness that the systems we are embedded within are leading to societal collapse, ecological disintegration, and abrupt climate disruption on the global scale. Mainstream psychology “puts the onus on the individual and takes the focus off of the violent and divisive systems we’re in,”* which in turn disempowers the individual from preparing, in any meaningful sense, for what lies ahead as we begin to experience the impacts of a fraying socioeconomic and political system (mired in systemic oppression and corruption), the catastrophic loss of species (described as the Sixth Mass Extinction event), a radically changing climate system (as a result of industrialization), and the likely near-term extinction of the human species as a result of these converging crises. “As with all things capitalist, patriarchal, and committed to the growth of civilization, psychology is used mostly as a tool of the oppressor to keep us divided into individual causes rather than working in solidarity with our class structure.”* Holly, in her work, seeks to make use of the tools provided in mainstream psychology, and incorporate Radical Attunement Work (RAW), which cultivates "a deep awareness of people and systems in order to fundamentally shift exploitative ways of being towards reciprocal relationship, collective liberation, and communities of care.”** As Holly says in her essay “we don’t have time for this shit. We have a small window in which we MAY be able to learn the skills needed to co-regulate with each other and organize for the needed revolution (or end-of-life care for our species).” The stakes really are this high. Scientist, author, and international speaker, Bruce Lipton passionately talks about how human survival on planet Earth depends on understanding our essential nature as creators. This thought-provoking interview links climate change and turmoil in the ecosystem with subconscious beliefs that perpetuate victimhood, conflict, and deny our power as creators. Uprooting these beliefs and bringing consciousness into our thoughts and behaviours hold the promise that we can survive the six mass extinction and create heaven on Earth. Join Bruce Lipton live at the Science & Spirituality Conference June 14-19 on Vancouver Island, BC. Dr. Lipton will be sharing the stage with Gregg Braden, Dr. Joe Dispenza, Lynne McTaggart, and Lee Carroll. Event info: http://www.shalohaproductions.com/science-spirituality-conference/

This week, I touch on events of the week before moving on to the major topic: Are we in the sixth mass extinction in the known history of the world?
Given that we are so close to the start of a new year, over the next couple of weeks on the podcast I wanted to stop and have a look at how our global, regional, and local environments are tracking along. Today and next week, I’m lucky to be chatting with Professor William Laurance. He is a distinguished research professor and Australian Laureate at James Cook University in Cairns, Australia. A tropical conservation biologist, he has written eight books and over 450 scientific and popular articles. He is a fellow of the Australian Academy of Sciences and has received many professional honors, including the Heineken Environment Prize. He is director of the Centre for Tropical Environmental and Sustainability Science at James Cook University, and founded and directs ALERT—the Alliance of Leading Environmental Researchers & Thinkers—a global conservation-advocacy group that reaches over 250,000 readers each week. He is also a four-time winner of Australia’s Best Science Writing Prize. The topic of today’s chat is Biodiversity. Many articles and media over the last few years have reported that the Earth is facing a Mass Extinction event on a scale similar to that which wiped out the dinosaurs. It’s been termed the Sixth Mass Extinction event and is really quite scary for life as we know it on Earth. In today’s podcast Bill and I discuss: What biodiversity is and why it’s important. What this Sixth Mass Extinction event means. The current rates and percentages of biodiversity loss Where Australia sits among the rest of the world on the issue of biodiversity. What needs to happen to halt, or slow the current rates of biodiversity loss worldwide. This is a really meaty episode but I’m excited and proud of that. I don’t like to shy away from the big issues on this podcast which is why I’ve invited Bill to come on and share his insights and knowledge on the topic of biodiversity.
This week's guest, Ashley Dawson, is a Professor of English at the Graduate Center/City University of New York, and the author of Extinction: A Radical History (as well as an extensive list of publications on sociology, economics, and literature). His book's argument – that capitalism's innate drive to grow and consume is essentially incompatible with sustainability – makes Extinction something in between an ecological treatise written by a communist and an economic manifesto written by an ecologist. * Support Future Fossils Podcast on Patreon: patreon.com/michaelgarfield *We had a fascinating and challenging conversation with Professor Dawson – a disarmingly modest and thoughtful fellow in spite of his fiery and politically charged writing. Part of acknowledging our role as ancestors-in-training is the unpleasant responsibility for examining our generation's role in the mass extinction of The Human Age.His ardent voice as a liberal intellectual, examining capitalism-caused mass extinction as an offense against the civil rights of our fellow beings, is a fresh contribution to the debate about climate change, "green" businesses, and personal responsibility. But he was also surprisingly willing to hear our critiques and place the conversation in a much wider context that examines the other mass extinctions that predated human beings; that considered the mass killings of premodern humans and the significant increase in recent years of ecological consciousness among average people. In light of his argument that we have to stage an economic coup to put a stop to the Sixth Mass Extinction, we get into it with questions like:• Can capitalism really be blamed for mass extinction? • How can we transition into a more ecological economics? • What happens if we treat capitalism as something nature's doing? One of the heaviest – but also deepest and most interesting – conversations we've had on the show to date.
