Kristina Cho is an award-winning cookbook author, recipe developer, home cook, baker, food stylist, and photographer. Her terrific debut cookbook, Mooncakes and Milk Bread, won her two James Beard awards, and her follow-up, Chinese Enough, is a big favorite of all of us at TASTE. We were so happy to have Kristina in the studio, where we found out about how she pivoted from a career in architecture to work on food full time. It was a bet that paid off, and we dig into Kristina's family history and how she writes her incredibly inspired recipes. Kristina and Matt are appearing together at the Tucson Festival of Books on March 15.Also on the show we have a really fun conversation with Eleanor Wilkinson. She is the author of a very cool new book, One Pot, One Portion.Do you enjoy This Is TASTE? Drop us a review on Apple, or star us on Spotify. We'd love to hear from you. SHOW NOTES: https://jewishbooks.blogspot.com/2024/10/festive-friends-part-ii-asian-jewish.html TRANSCRIPT: https://otter.ai/u/xKGzqMhNsej4ALLe6F7e2wBfNJg October 2024 is packed with Jewish holidays, so we've got a 2-part series for you to celebrate: Holiday Friends. In each episode, we hear from a pair of friends about their books that will help us celebrate the Jewish holidays. In Festive Friends Part I we heard from Gayle Forman, author of Not Nothing, and Marjorie Ingall, author of Getting to Sorry. Here in Festive Friends Part II, we meet Erica Lyons and Christina Matula. Lately, Kids of mixed heritage have finally been getting their mirror books, and a great example is Erica and Christina's new picture book Mixed-Up Mooncakes, about a Chinese Jewish family celebrating the Mid Autumn Festival and Sukkot. I love the cozy atmosphere of this book, with its double harvest festival fun; and I love the comfortable way in which the Chinese and Jewish cultures are mixed together both literally and figuratively in the story. LEARN MORE: Festive Friends Part I with Gayle Forman and Marjorie Ingall Erica Lyons' website Christina Matula's website Buy Mixed-Up Mooncakes Reading recommendations: Erica suggests Chicken Soup, Chicken Soup by Pamela Mayer and the Holly-Mei series by Christina Matula. There's no recipe on this episode, instead we talk about a whole dang cookbook! We could not be more thrilled to have guest Kristina Cho, James Beard Award winner, creator of EatChoFood, author of a New York Times Top 10 Best Cookbooks of 2022 Mooncakes and Milk Bread and forthcoming cookbook Chinese Enough! We talk with Kristina about how Chinese Enough came to be, some of her favorite recipes (in the moment) from the book, and what it means to be Chinese enough. She also talks about growing up in a restaurant family, the best non-dinner party dinner parties, and how her Midwestern upbringing manifests now in her California life. Plus we talk about the enduring importance of fresh fruit for dessert, weirdly specific (and false!) book reviews, and of course, Costco. Freesia gushes the whole time. Chinese Enough is available for pre-order wherever you get your books. Freesia insists you go order it now so you can hug it later.

In a happy happenstance, this week's episode falls on National Noodle Day, and to celebrate Eli and Paul have managed to get their hands on something a little bit special. Only available in Japan, the Nissin company have released two new products designed to appeal to “gamers”, the Gaming Cup Noodle Energy Garlic & Black Pepper Yakisoba and the Gaming Curry Meshi Energy Ginger Keema Curry. How will they fair with the UK's self-proclaimed noodle super tasters? The cheap chaps are also gifted with some very special Chinese treats when a lovely listener sends them a range of mooncakes. Although a wonderful snack, Paul is going to have a very violent falling out with one of them. But which one? As ever, the answers can be found in this episode of CheapShow! About The Book: his is a young adult LGBTQ novel that is marketed as Heartstopper Meet Crazy Rich Asian. In comes Theo Somers, a wealthy and charming teenager, who asks Dylan to pretend to be his fake date at his family's wedding in the Hamptons. Dylan is thrown into a world of privilege and family drama. As the mooncake contest is coming, Dylan can't risk being sidetracked by family drama or his feeling for Theo. We choose a fluffy graphic novel that was nominated for a Goodreads Choice Award. Mooncakes by Suzanne Walker and drawn by Wendy Xu tells the story of a young witch named Nova who must help their friend Tam combat a demon hellbent on possessing them. Tam is a werewolf on the run from a villainous cult. With help from their grandmothers known as the Nans, family, and a little romance, this story holds a lot of power. It's also heavy on positive representation and just a wholesome time. We really enjoyed reading this one! Next month's book is No Gods for Drowning by Hailey Piper. We liked The Worm and His Kings so much we came back for another book! Twitter.Com/SharedPagesPod
It's 2023 and we decided to start the new year off on a slightly cosmic bend. The Ballad of Black Tom by Victor LaValle follows a man named Charlie as he navigates Harlem, magic, racism, and a strange man's desire to awaken a cosmic entity known as The Sleeping King. For a short story, this book contains a lot of characterization and leaves the horror up to the imagination. The events blur together sometimes in this story in a dream-like way! Next month's book is a graphic novel called: Mooncakes by Suzanne Walker and Wendy Xu! Come read along with us over at Twitter.Com/SharedPagesPod!

Episode 136: Kristina ChoThis week, we're joined by Kristina Cho to discuss her debut cookbook, Mooncakes and Milk Bread: Sweet and Savory Recipes Inspired by Chinese Bakeries. Kristina is a Bay Area-based recipe developer and writer who grew up in a restaurant family in Cleveland, Ohio. After a degree in architecture left her longing for something more, she turned to food blogging and launched Eat Cho Food. As her recipes grew in popularity, she realized some of the hits were items you'd find at Chinese bakeries (one of the first to resonate: the hot dog flower buns). Before long, Kristina had made another realization: the cookbook world was missing a book dedicated to Chinese bakery-style recipes. So Kristina set out to write up.Mooncakes & Milk Bread is the result of that effort, and it landed Kristina two coveted James Beard Awards earlier this year (in both the Baking & Desserts and Emerging Voice cookbook categories.) The book is packed with classic and inventive recipes, from pineapple buns to almond cookies. Sweet and savory items share the space, as they do in most Chinese bakeries. And Kristina offers essays on the history of Chinatowns, profiles of some storied bakeries, and more. I met up with Kristina in San Francisco's Chinatown, where we strolled past long-standing bakeries, sampled some fare, and chatted about her career and her first cookbook. We were meeting just before the Mid-Autumn Festival (or Moon Festival), one of the most important Chinese holidays and an important time for enjoying and sharing mooncakes. I hope you enjoy my chat with Kristina Cho.Bonus Content + Recipes This WeekThis week, paid subscribers will receive Kristina's recipe for Youtiao (Chinese Doughnut), which we enjoyed together in San Francisco:Also later this week: Chef Ji Hye Kim on how she celebrates Chuseok, the Korean Mid-Autumn Harvest Festival.Salt + Spine is supported by listeners like you.
