In this episode, host Janet Michael discusses one of Frederick County's favorite events, the Shenandoah Valley Apple Harvest Festival, with co-chair Darla McCreary. Darla, a Winchester Rotarian, shares that the festival will take place on September 21st and 22nd at the Frederick County Fairgrounds. The festival is celebrating its 50th year and will feature a variety of events, including arts and crafts, pet-friendly activities, and live music. Originally an arts and crafts festival, it has since expanded to include more fun elements like pet areas and adult beverages, including beer, cider, and mead. There will be continuous live music throughout both days, including performances by Mojo Mothership, Jimmy Lee, and Bottle Shock. A special 'Apple Harvest at Night' concert featuring Chris Darlington will require a separate admission. The festival will also host an apple pie baking and eating contest, a classic car show, and a kids' zone with face painting, inflatables, a petting zoo, and pony rides. The festival is organized by the all-volunteer Rotary Club of Winchester, which raises significant funds for local nonprofits. The Rotary Club has donated a playground to Jim Barnett Park and hosts a variety of fundraisers, including a rummage sale, golf tournament, and international wine-tasting affair. Food concessions will include everything from apple-themed treats like apple pie and apple dumplings to ethnic foods, BBQ, and Jamaican jerk chicken. General admission is $10 per day, with free entry for children under 10, law enforcement, veterans, and military personnel. Coupons for a dollar off can be picked up at Handy Mart stores. 'Apple Harvest at Night' requires a separate $10 ticket or $25 for VIP seating, which includes an adult beverage. The festival is supported by sponsors like First Bank, Bank of Clarke, and White House/National Fruit. For more details, including vendor sign-ups and ticket purchases, visit rotaryclubofwinchester.org. Pets are welcome, and attendees are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets to enjoy the festival's atmosphere.

We also discover that many wine shops effectively offer a pre-label label by categorising wines to there system. Country style etc. And it also leads us to the wonderful world of discoveries that is a Bin-End. Ever wondered why there are now two labels? What purpose does the one on the back serve? And how is it that wine can put the polish back on to a one pence/cent coin? Scenic detours this week do not include the films Bottle Shock and The Hangover but we do discuss them etymologically. Dan Berger and Jordan Kunde Jason Kunde from Kunde Family Winery joins Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger in the studio today on California Wine Country. Jason's father Jeff was a guest on California Wine Country on this episode back on May 31, 2017. Dan Berger has brought another bottle from his gigantic collection, but this time not from the cellar, because he has just bought it. It is a 2022 Riesling, from Donnhoff in Germany that has some residual sugar, but the wine is not sweet. It has that slate aroma with dried pear and other fruits that Dan likes in this wine. Riesling doesn't take a lot of time in the bottle, necessarily, but if you lose some bottles in your cellar and let it age, Riesling can reward you with magnificent flavors. It comes from the Nahe region, which is a new Riesling production zone. It is available at Bottle Barn at a very favorable price. One of the oldest vineyards in California There have been grapes on the property since the mid 1800s. The first vines that were identified were probably around 1850 and the first Cabernet produced anywhere in the United States that was recognized from a single property dates from 1877, says Dan. The Drummond family was the wealthiest family in the region and they produced the Dunfillan Cabernet. The movie Bottle Shock, about the 1976 Judgement of Paris, was filmed on the Dunfillan property, although the story takes place in France. Click the logo to visit our sponsor Bottle Barn online for the coolest bargains on wine, beer and spirits. Jason has brought a Chardonnay, which they all agree is "bright." He also brought a reserve Chardonnay. The first is a 2021 Sonoma Valley Chardonnay. Served at room temperature this wine shows a beautiful expansive mid-palette. If chilled, it would have a different flavor. The Kunde Estate The Kunde property is a beautiful estate and Jason knows he is fortunate. He is happy now that his parents made him work all the time and learn each aspect of the operation. His house was 100 yards from the vineyard. He and his brother would play roller hockey in the wine cave. To play they would turn off all the power and the game was flashlight tag. The game was also to elude the staff who came to get them for making trouble. Click the logo to visit our sponsor Rodney Strong for up-to-date info on concerts and other events. They did want each sibling to get some experience outside the family company. He worked for two wineries in Calistoga. When he came back, he had some experience to offer. Dan describes the Kunde property, 750 contiguous acres of great looking vineyards, beautifully farmed. Dan notes that it is consistent from block to block. Dan's compliment is that they are a family of farmers who later got into wine. They sell about 70% of their grapes on contract and they keep about 30% to make their own wine. Many of their wines are made in small lots and are only available in the tasting room. The black label 2021 Reserve Chardonnay that they are tasting is a good example of that.

Are you curious about the most important historic tasting that put California wines on the map? What unique challenges did pioneer winemakers face in California? What would surprise you about how the California wine industry developed? Good luck!   Highlights When did Mark realize he wanted to write about wine? How did Mark develop his professional interest and expertise in genocide education? What has been the worst moment of Mark's writing career so far and what did he learn from it? Which moments have created the best memories in Mark's writing career? What's the significance of the “Judgement of Paris” and why was Mark drawn to the story? What will you learn in Mark's new book, Rise of Napa Valley Wineries? Who were some of the early pioneers of Napa Valley wineries? How were the Judgement of Paris reenactments done? What are aged California wines like? What are some of the inaccuracies in the movie Bottle Shock? Why was Robert Mondavi instrumental in transforming the California wine industry?   Key Takeaways I didn't realize how pivotal the 1976 Paris tasting was not only for California wines but also for other New World wines around the globe. With Mark's explanation, I can see how its ramifications spread. What was so amazing was that these wines were tasted blind. No one knew the identity of the wines, and they were judged by French experts. It was the French experts saying California at the top. It was fascinating to hear about the unique challenges pioneer winemakers faced in California. It's a wonder that they persevered in the face of such huge obstacles. I also enjoyed hearing about the surprising way the California wine industry developed.   About Mark Gudgel Dr. Mark Gudgel is an eighteen-year veteran of teaching high school English and presently serves as assistant professor of education at the College of Saint Mary in Omaha. After honeymooning in Wine Country, Mark and his wife, Sonja, began a wine blog and soon after he was recruited as a regular correspondent for American Winery Guide. From there, Gudgel went on to write for Food & Spirits, Dine, Edible Omaha, and numerous other publications. His book, The Rise of Napa Valley Wineries: How the Judgment of Paris put California wine on the map, focuses on the wine industry and issues that surround it, and was released from History Press in May of 2023.       To learn more, visit https://www.nataliemaclean.com/236.

Jordan mentions being Sailor Mars, while Dave is Sailor Moon. They discuss the powers and attributes of these characters, including Sailor Mars' fiery nature and Sailor Moon's heroism. Johnny Spoiler also mentions being assigned the character Sailor Pluto, who has the power to manipulate time. They talk about the quiz aligning well with each individual's personality traits. Regarding the Transformers franchise, Johnny Spoiler expressed some skepticism or dissatisfaction with the casting choices and character adaptations. Dave mentioned Chris Hemsworth's voice not being fitting for the character, and Johnny's preference for other Transformers films comes up. It's important to note that casting decisions and character portrayals are subjective and can vary between different adaptations and interpretations of a franchise. As for the vampire-related films, we mentioned "Blood: The Last Vampire" and "Love, Death & Robots: Sucker of Souls." "Blood: The Last Vampire" originated as an anime film and later spawned manga adaptations and two anime series, "Blood+" and "Blood C." The film is known for being one of the first all-digital anime creations. "Love, Death & Robots" is an anthology series, and "Sucker of Souls" is one of the episodes. It features an archeological dig unearthing Dracula and his battle against mercenaries while the villain has a fear or allergy to cats. Jordan Savage mentions the "Bits for Blood" and "Sucker of Souls" movies and shares her favorite scenes from each. Johnny Spoiler adds his favorite scenes and references Buffy. Dangerous Dave jokes about a former host named Nick and the Canadian love for him. Finally, they conclude by discussing the ratings of both movies, with Jordan Savage giving a "binge" rating and Dangerous Dave giving a "binge later" rating. Johnny Spoiler discusses the anime Dirty Pair. Johnny advises Dangerous Dave not to watch it, calling it a "dirty pair," which elicits laughter. Johnny Spoiler suggests looking up the anime and having fun with it, but Dangerous Dave expresses reluctance, fearing that watching it might infect his computer. Johnny Spoiler responds by joking that Dave's computer is already infected. They continue their banter about computer operating systems and online security, mentioning Windows versions and the use of Norton. Johnny Spoiler mentions a documentary about the activities of the person behind Norton. They then talk about their upcoming anime month and the arrival of puppets for their show. They mention a giveaway of Vampire Hunter D box sets and encourage listeners to leave reviews for a chance to win. They briefly discuss their limited knowledge of Vampire Hunter D and potential sequels, as well as other anime they have watched, including Vampire Hunter D and The Mist. Johnny Spoiler brings up the ending of The Mist and recommends watching it. The conversation concludes with a mention of a true crime show on HBO and a similar show on Hulu, both involving the name "Candy" in some way. They briefly discuss the actresses involved in the Hulu show. They also mention watching "Bottle Shock," a movie about American wine in Napa Valley and a competition with French wine. Johnny Spoiler jokes about having Chris Pine on his celebrity cheat card, and Jordan Savage jokes about Chris Pine's beautiful eyebrows. The conversation becomes playful and light-hearted, with mentions of YouTube videos and audience reactions. They make humorous references to Chris Pine and express the desire to push the boundaries of the audience's reactions. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Finding the apocalyptic visions of the last episode too sobering, Sean and Cody liquor up with some California chardonnay to tackle the first comedy on the Green Screen list. In Bottle Shock, wine academy president Stephen Spurrier (Alan Rickman) tries to shake up the Paris wine scene by pitting the snobby old guard French vintners against the rebellious upstarts of California's Napa Valley in a famous 1976 tasting competition. Can the mostly golden but sometimes poop-brown fluid wrought by the awkward father-son combination of Bill Pullman and Chris Pine, as the beleaguered vintners of Chateau Montelena, stack up against the European heavyweights? Environmental issues explored include the history of viticulture, settler colonialism in old California, and peoples' relationship with the land they live and work.   What really happened in the 1976 “Judgment of Paris” competition? Why did California wine have such a terrible reputation for most of the 20th century? How did a handful of Eastern European refugees from Communist oppression save the California wine business? Who wouldn't be flattered to have Alan Rickman play them in a movie? How do you pronounce “terroir”? What was up with those Orson Welles wine commercials from the early ‘80s? Did Pearl Jam and the Foo Fighters play at Woodstock ‘94? How can Chris Pine's wig be even worse than William Shatner's in Star Trek IV? Why were you so much more likely to watch this movie on the back of an airline seat than in a theater? The answers to these questions flow like cheap cabernet from a bottle of Two Buck Chuck in this tasty episode of Green Screen. The Prayers of the Saints Chardonnay 2017 is 100% Chardonnay sourced from vineyards in Washington State. I have noticed that wine that once had Columbia Valley as the place of origin on the label now say Washington State, they must be looking to promote Washington since the Columbia Valley produces 99% of the wine in Washington. Prayers of the Saints Chardonnay (there is also a Prayer of the Sinners Red Blend) is a new label from Chateau Ste Michelle, the largest winery in Washington. This Chardonnay has some interesting features, 7% of the juice is "Black Chardonnay", no, that isn't a type of Chardonnay, it is Chardonnay that became oxidized early in the winemaking process. If you saw the movie "Bottle Shock" you are familiar with its symptoms, the Chardonnay turns a nasty brown color before reverting to the golden Chardonnay hue we all know. In the movie it was accidental, but here, it is intentional. It is a technical process I don't quite understand, but if it occurs early in the process it is beneficial and if the wine oxidizes late in the winemaking you have major problems. The winemakers say it reduces bitterness and adds rich, complex flavor and it is something that you would not expect in a Chardonnay selling in the $10 to $13 range. 76% of the juice was fermented and aged in stainless steel vats and 24% in 53% French oak and 47% American oak barrels, no new barrels, but a mix of 1 and 2 year old barrels. French and American oak are two different species of oak and they have different grain structure and impart different flavors. So these various percentages add up to a very detailed and precise oak flavoring to the wine. I always say no 2 winemakers produce Chardonnay the same way, while there are many similarities from one Chard to another there is always something at least a little different and the Prayer of the Saints may be markedly different. The packaging of the wine also stands out, the label is a mashup of medieval skeletons and Salvador Dali-like painting of praying saints. And here is the labels party trick...the back label says that if you are a saint or a sinner the truth will be revealed  in the dark (so be sure the front label is exposed to bright light) because when the lights are cut the label becomes a glow in the dark praying skeleton. So it looks like according to this Chardonnay we are all sinners, they're probably right. The alcohol content is 13.5%, not that sinners worry about such things. The color is wheat yellow with a golden tint. The nose is on the husky side, melon, lemon, peach, pear, French vanilla, baking spice, apple, and flowers. This is a fruit-forward smooth, medium-bodied Chardonnay, with lip smacking acidity (that's a good thing). It tastes of a mix of peach, pear, lime, and lemon curd, ripe green apple, and vanilla cream. The mid-palate offers hint of spice, a salty sensation, and pink lemonade, followed by melon. The acidity allows the Chardonnay to be an appealing sipping wine and also pair well with upscale summer salads and cold seafood, shrimp, oysters, and crab legs. The finish mirrors the body of the wine and hangs around for a respectable length of time. Summary * You saw the Bottle Shock movie now you can kind of taste what they were talking about, two very different Chardonnays, but it isn't everyday, especially in this price range, that you get to experience "Black Chardonnay". * You can choose a wine by the label, wine with skulls and/or skeletons on the label have never let me down and you can add bonus points for glow-in-the-dark skeletons * Washington State wines offer a great deal of taste and quality in the value price wine class * The "Black Chardonnay" adds a hint of sweetness, this is basically a "dry" wine, but there is ripe, sweet fruit around the edges of the flavor profile

“They’re living too fast.” —Wes ‘Deacon’ Smoot About: It used to be that you could grow apples, herd sheep, or fell timber and make a decent living in the Anderson Valley. But not even the few stop signs in this remote valley could slow down the incoming cash crop of grapes. The area’s long legacy of logging now takes a backseat to its newer reputation of producing some of the world’s best pinot noir. But how did a tucked-away valley 40 minutes from the Pacific Coast and the main highway all of a sudden become a major wine destination? And what toll did this have on a fractured community just reeling from the Redwood Summer days? And what does it mean for the future of the town's famous frontier language called Boontling? Bottle Shock / Randall Miller Interview

An interview with RANDALL MILLER the director of BOTTLE SHOCK - the story of the early days of California wine making featuring the now infamous, blind Paris wine tasting of 1976 that has come to be known as "Judgment of Paris". Shot on location in the Northern California wine country, Bottle Shock focuses on the contentious relationship between headstrong perfectionist Jim Barrett (Bill Pullman), a former attorney, and his free-spirited son Bo (Chris Pine). For all their differences, the two share a dream of producing a great Chardonnay at the Chateau Montelena vineyard Jim founded in Calistoga in the early 1970s. Miller began his career at the American Film Institute with the short film Marilyn Hotchkiss' Ballroom Dancing and Charm School. The film won numerous awards and began Miller's professional career as a director. Off the heat of the short, Randall directed numerous episodic series such as "thirtysomething," "Northern Exposure," "Popular" and "Jack & Jill." His feature career took off with the films Houseguest and The Sixth Man. Looking to get back to his roots in independent filmmaking, Miller and his wife, Jody Savin, set out to start anew. Ironically, their new start took them back to the short with which it all began. Marilyn Hotchkiss Ballroom Dancing & Charm School is now realized as a full-length feature. The team subsequently completed another labor of love, Nobel Son (2007), starring Alan Rickman as a Nobel Prize winner you hate to love.
