Dr. Mae-ling Lokko is an Assistant Professor at Yale University's School of Architecture and Yale's Center for Ecosystems in Architecture (Yale CEA) and the founder of Willow Technologies Ltd., in Accra, Ghana. As an architectural scientist, designer, and educator from Ghana and the Philippines, her work focuses on the design and integration of biogenic material practices across the agricultural, architectural and textile sectors. This year, she joined the board of the International Living Future Institute. She references the importance of breaking boundaries between silos and communities because, she says, “the materials that we work with surely do.” She is proud of her many collaborations across and between academic, industry, and communities: “We are are advancing top-down and bottom-up approaches to getting these biobased materials not just known but normalized” in the AEC community. Throughout her work, Mae-ling is inspired by the stories of how biobased materials were used over long periods of time in different societies, “which offer us clues for how they could be used today and in the future.”

Welcome to the Institute of Black Imagination podcast, beaming in conversations from the galaxy of Black genius. I'm your host, Dario. Today we're honored to introduce our guest, Professor Lesley Lokko. A distinguished Ghanaian-Scottish architect, educator, and bestselling novelist, Dr. Lokko most recently served as the Curator of the 18th Venice Biennale of Architecture, becoming the first Black-identified person to hold the position. She's also the founder and Director of the African Futures Institute (AFI) a pioneering postgraduate school of architecture in Accra, Ghana.Dr. Lokko is also a best-selling novelist with 12 titles under her belt. Her novels have been translated into sixteen languages dealing with themes of love, loyalty, class, race, and cultural identity, transforming the “beach-read” genre into an extension of her architectural, world-building practice. For her contributions to the fields of Architecture and education, she was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2023 and 2024 won the Gold Medal Award, by the Royal Institute of British Architects, one of the highest honors in the world of architecture. And in many ways, that's where today's conversation with Prof. Leslie Lokko begins. The reality of appearing to be at the top, juxtaposed against the sweat and elbow grease required in institution-building and well… being a human being. Totaling several billions of tons a year worldwide, agricultural waste––produced by raising plants and animals, and including stalks, husks, hulls, and manure––is both a problem and an opportunity. In this interview with Design Emergency co-founder Paola Antonelli, Ghanaian-Filipino architectural scientist, designer, and entrepreneur Mae-ling Lokko discusses the many effective and elegant ways she has devised to transform agrowaste into building materials that continue the cycle of life as opposed to interrupting it––and redistribute value along the way. Agriculture harks back to roughly 12-15,000 years ago, when our ancestors abandoned their peripatetic hunting-and-foraging life and settled down, beginning to mold the world to their needs and wants. The more sophisticated tools required to cultivate the land and the spatial planning required to establish those settlements point to design's centrality in establishing this new era, and therefore also in unleashing the rampant colonization and exploitation of the planet which we now call the Anthropocene. Be as it may, design can now also play a central role in mitigating its negative effects, Mae-ling Lokko suggests in this episode. As the founder of Willow Technologies in Accra, Ghana, a company which upcycles agricultural waste into affordable bio-based building materials and water quality-treatment applications, she is actively demonstrating the viability of a new, wholesome model of design and entrepreneurship. You'll find images of the projects Mae-ling describes in this interview on our Instagram feed @design.emergency. Vo Trong Nghia's approach to architecture embodies mindfulness towards materials which demonstrates the possibilities of thoughtful, considered designs. Join Vo Trong Nghia as he presents a series of projects created by his practice – each one a powerful testament to his belief that we need more greenery in our cities for the health of our urban environments, as well as our own. Building predominantly in Vietnam, Vo Trong uses familiar materials such as stone and bamboo in his designs, to create an immediate and direct relationship with the sourcing and production of materials. While this certainly keeps construction processes simple, his designs appear anything but. He credits this material mindfulness to his daily meditation, which he has also embedded in his design practice – a holistic approach toward problem-solving. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Living Cities Forum is an annual assembly exploring the role of design, planning and architecture in shaping our society. In July 2022 it returned to Melbourne with an impressive array of international and local architecture and urban design leaders—featuring keynote addresses from globally renowned thinkers including Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Elder Dave Wandin, British architect and co-founder of Dark Matter Labs Indy Johar, Canadian landscape architect Jane Mah Hutton, British architect and educator Joseph Grima, Ghanaian educator and architectural scientist Mae-ling Lokko, Vietnamese architect Vo Trong Nghia, and Chinese architect Xu Tiantian. While there has been increased awareness into the impacts of our material use in recent times, our approach to building construction continues to reflect short-term commercial interests over long-term environmental sustainability. These short-term interests are most evident in the material flow of pollution. Against this backdrop, the forum explored if the current global disruptions to material flows—as a result of the global pandemic, wars and other destabilising factors—might well be our chance to rethink the materials we have taken for granted. Can we seize this moment to accelerate our first steps towards a genuine circular economy? Can we support those who are decarbonising our supply chains, while also breathing new life into smaller footprint manufacturing? Have you ever paused to consider where all the materials around us come from, and what will happen to them? Walking us through her recent book – Reciprocal Landscapes – Jane Mah Hutton shares her research tracing the origins, labour practices and regimes required to bring five key materials to the streets of Manhattan. Guano fertilizer, granite, steel, trees and wood provide examples of how material flows can be disrupted by humans, and how we have become alienated from our materials, the places they come from and the people involved in making or providing them. Ultimately Jane invites us to consider: how can design, de-construction and materials stewardship help to change the history of exploitation of both people and the environment? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Living Cities Forum is an annual assembly exploring the role of design, planning and architecture in shaping our society. In this summative discussion, Mel Dodds is joined by Dave Wandin, Indy Johar, Jane Mah Hutton and Vo Trong Nghia, as together they crystalise the common themes throughout the morning's presentations. Emphasising our need to examine our relationship to materials, panellists discussed how to re-orient our focus from ideas of ownership towards ideas of material stewardship and responsibility towards the land. Although the scale of both the projects and the ideas presented differed greatly between speakers, they all discuss how the greatest challenge is in the conflict we currently have in our relationship with the environment. For as long as humanity has traded, materials have flowed. The 2022 Living Cities Forum theme ‘Material Flows' examined the global material flows that underwrite our growing built environments. Within the 2022 theme, Living Cities Forum delivered its fifth program of keynote lectures, with cross-disciplinary talks over the course of the day by globally renowned thinkers from around the world. How can dealing with waste become less of a punishment and more of an opportunity? Sharing her work in Ghana, Mae-Ling Lokko explores three key material flows, involving the land, the plate and the building. Using coconut husks and mycelium – a type of fungus used to compost food waste – as examples of alternative building products, Mae-Ling demonstrates a transformational pathway in which agricultural and food waste materials can present new opportunities within a bio-economy. Through her exploration of these material flows she pays careful attention to the humans involved and their potential to disrupt or enhance these processes. Mae-Ling also presents ideas on how designers might engage with these processes to help identify value translation and circulation opportunities. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Living Cities Forum is an annual assembly exploring the role of design, planning and architecture in shaping our society. Introducing us to the concept of ‘architectural acupuncture' Xu Tiantian presents four projects in rural China, where small projects have created big opportunities for revitalising rural villages. Each project is vastly different, an outcome of the highly-localised approach to design using traditional materials and building techniques. In this way, materials and their production are a cultural expression and each of Xu Tiantian's projects seeks to restore cultural heritage, preserving tradition and history as a resource with which to revitalise local villages. Demonstrating how architecture acupuncture can make use of limited funds to create low-tech systems for public buildings, Xu Tiantian is able to achieve cultural, social and economic sustainability through her work. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Living Cities Forum is an annual assembly exploring the role of design, planning and architecture in shaping our society. Joseph Grima takes a step back, literally, to show us an image of the earth taken from the Apollo 17 space shuttle. This is the moment when we realise that we operate within a finite, closed ecosystem while coming to terms with the fact that our economies depend on exponential growth. Discussing the historical, entrenched views humans have towards the environment – notably dominated by our economic framework – Joseph unpacks the ways in which this world view was created, how it evolved, and why it is flawed. Finishing with a provocation, Joseph asks us to question whether environmental depletion is necessary and what other models are out there, calling for a ‘non-extractive architecture' – design without depletion. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Living Cities Forum is an annual assembly exploring the role of design, planning and architecture in shaping our society. In today's episode we chat with one of the UK's most inspiring people, former gang leader and u-turned public speaker, poet, musician and rehabilitation leader - Karl Lokko. Whether it's visiting Necker Island with Richard Branson or attending the Royal wedding, Karl's remarkable journey is a far cry from his Brixton Badlands past. Karl is one of the UK's most connected under 30 year olds, he now holds a platform for true change, helping thousands of youth to escape the gang culture on the very dangerous streets of South London. As a former gang leader himself, life hasn't always been so easy. Infact his u-turn is nothing less than truly breathtaking. And his journey to get to where he is now, even more jaw dropping! From the age 12, Karl found himself on the wrong side of the tracks when his bicycle was stolen a few too many times. In his defense he formed his own gang of misfits, something Brixton wasn't short of. A product of the Windrush generation decades before him, he was used to seeing displacement all around him. Which gave everyone and anyone a reason to fight.   “There's a reason for rage, they so won't that scare you straight? Well, If what you're doing is because you are already scared, that is going to fuel your rage” - Karl [17:35] Unfortunately the violence didn't stay on a scrappy playground level for long. By the age of 14 he had already witnessed his friends being shot, been shot at himself and carried his own knife wounds as battle scars. Scars that he held as a trophy to go with the ‘strike them before they strike you' mindset that permeated both his gang and the culture that followed - with or against him. “There's a lack of remorse, everyone can feel our pain ‘cause I'm feeling it, everyone else becomes fair game” - Karl [16:00] But his story isn't only one of a bleak distraught childhood, in today's episode you'll hear the remarkable story of how Karl turned his back on the violence and literally earned himself a seat at the table with some of the world's most powerful and influential people. Karl now heads up a charitable organisation that transforms gang members into respectable citizens, helping them see life outside of gangs. Or as Alex calls it, his “love gang” - “goosebumps” as Mimi puts it. “I was inspired by bible stories of sheppard boys throwing rocks at political, economical and cultural giants called Goliath. Those emails were my stones and i had to throw them out there” - Karl [47.30] We are truly honoured to talk with Karl. His giant heart, kind nature and switched on intelligence shines light on what you can do if you really put your mind to making a positive change, both in your life and others. We talk about: The disaffected difference between class and race that still exists in society today How gangs and street violence are a product of circumstance Anxieties can lead to displacement Your enemy is also a person, how to look into their eyes and see from another perspective The only real enemy is yourself and your choice in how you react to situations Why the only answer to the problem we face is love How you can form your own love gang Why we should be turning societies liabilities into assets and help displaced people find a purpose Going behind enemy lines with an open heart, walking the path to a ceasefire Finding a support system in the most influential people in the world How speaking with confidence puts you at the same table as powerful people   Hope you enjoyed this week's episode with Karl, you can find out more about him here: Karllokko.com Twitter Instagram   Butterfly Effect - Youtube video by Karl Lokko
