It seems that the denizens of New London, Connecticut have real issues with forgiveness and letting go. Every year they throw a bizarre festival castigating the infamous American Revolutionary War-era traitor Benedict Arnold for giving information to the British forces leading them to raid and burn New London in 1781. The annual event consists of parades with revelers wearing tricorn hats, carrying mock bayonets and torches and other commemorations all culminating in the burning of Arnold in effigy after 242 years. Really, no really! Forgiving is not always easy, it's like trying to fold a giant fitted sheet—a seemingly impossible task that requires patience, flexibility, and perhaps a touch of divine intervention. So that got us thinking about how anger, resentment, and hatred impact our wellbeing and what the benefits of forgiveness may offer us. And because it's what he does, Peter tracked down the Godfather of forgiveness, the man who recognized its power and has since dedicated his life to the research and proliferation of forgiveness. Lauded as a “game changer in modern psychology” by the American Psychological Foundation, Dr. Robert Enright holds the Aristotelian Professorship in Forgiveness Science in the UW–Madison School of Education's Department of Educational Psychology. He's also a five-time Nobel Peace Prize nominee, winner of the 2022 American Psychological Foundation's Gold Medal Award for Impact in Psychology, and author of the first scientific study on person-to-person forgiveness. IN THIS EPISODE: Forgiveness defined and its scientifically proven benefits. When someone forgives but keeps punishing you. Does forgiveness negate justice? The cultures that have adopted unconditional forgiveness. Should schools teach forgiveness as part of a basic curriculum? Too much forgiveness? Toxic forgiveness? 100 men in maximum-security prison; how forgiveness affected them? The step-by-step process to achieve forgiveness. The scientific reason we blame people. Jason's mother's reason for blaming people. Historical feuds, Seinfeld grudges & producer Lorre's vendettas. Peter's skin's quality and why Jason likes touching him. FOLLOW DR. Dr. Robert Enright is the 2022 recipient of the Gold Medal Award for Impact in Psychology by the American Psychological Foundation. Roberta “Robbie” Kaplan successfully argued before the Supreme Court of the United States on behalf of LGBTQ rights activist Edith Windsor, in United States v. Windsor, a landmark decision that invalidated a section of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) requiring the federal government to recognize marriages of same-sex couples. Kaplan went on to author Then Comes Marriage: United States v. Windsor and the Defeat of DOMA, chosen by the Los Angeles Times as one of the top 10 books of 2015. Kaplan currently leads some of the country's highest-profile commercial and public interest litigation, from suing the neo-Nazis behind the violence in Charlottesville to representing E. Jean Carroll, Mary Trump and investors in ACN in lawsuits against Donald Trump. Kaplan left Big Law to found Kaplan Hecker & Fink in 2017 as a new kind of law firm blending a high-stakes commercial and white-collar practice with a fundamental commitment to public interest cases centered on values of inclusion, equity and justice. The firm is majority women- and LGBTQ+-owned and more than 75 percent of its attorneys identify as women, people of color and/or LGBTQ+. KHF takes on groundbreaking, precedent-setting cases that not only advance the public interest, but have a significant impact beyond the courtroom – especially for women and other marginalized groups. In pioneering this new kind of boutique law firm, Kaplan has redefined the traditional concept of “pro bono” by taking on important matters – both to the firm and the public – and ensuring they are at the core of the firm's practice. Kaplan has been widely recognized for her impact and leadership, including the New York State Bar Association's Gold Medal Award and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the New York Law Journal, which also named her Attorney of the Year in 2020. Kaplan was also named Litigator of the Year by The American Lawyer and Most Innovative Lawyer of the Year by The Financial Times. In addition to an A.B. from Harvard College (magna cum laude) and a J.D. from Columbia Law School – where she teaches a seminar on advanced civil procedure – Kaplan holds honorary doctorates from Johns Hopkins University and the Jewish Theological Seminary, among others. Recorded May 19, 2023.

We talk a lot on this podcast about building loyalty. But what happens when you are a loyal employee who is let go? This happened to Robin Merle, who was fired from her company after more than 10 years of employment. Working through her period of “disorientation,” Robin learned a lot about herself and connected with many others on the same journey. Grieving the loss of a job is not a linear journey, and it's okay not to be okay. Ultimately, she learned to see the experience for what it was: an opportunity for change and growth. She now mentors others through the same journey. Robin sees that there is strength in both loyalty and a “caring indifference” to work. She feels there can be “too much loyalty,” so she guides others to build a strong sense of self both inside and outside the workplace, making it easier to adapt to change and move on. Robin Merle, CFRE has been a senior executive for billion-dollar nonprofit organizations and a veteran of the power, value, and identity wars at the top ranks. She is the author of Involuntary Exit, A Woman's Guide to Thriving After Being Fired (She Writes Press) which received the 2021 Gold Medal Award from the Non-Fiction Authors Association and a 5-star review from Foreward. In 2018 she received the Moon Beam children's book Gold Medal Award. Holly has taught as adjunct faculty at Utah Valley University and is currently an instructor of record at the University of Utah. Adapting to Climate Change – Impacts on Our Transportation Infrastructure The U.S. transportation system was built for the typical weather and climate experienced locally. Moderate changes in the mean climate have little impact on transportation. However, changes in weather and climate extremes can have considerable impact on transportation. Transportation relevant measures of extremes have been changing over the past several decades and are projected to continue to change in the future. Some of the changes are likely to have a positive impact on transportation and some negative. As the climate warms, cold temperature extremes are projected to continue to decrease. Milder winter conditions would likely improve the safety record for rail, air and ships. Warm extremes, on the other hand, are projected to increase. This change would likely increase the number of roadbed and railroad track bucklings and adversely impact maintenance work. As the cold season decreases and the warm season increases, northern transportation dependent upon ice roads and permanently frozen soil would be adversely affected while the projected commercial opening of the Northwest Passage would result in clear benefits to marine transportation. The warming would also produce a side benefit of shifting more of the precipitation from snow to rain. But not all precipitation changes are likely to be beneficial. Heavy precipitation events are projected to increase, which can cause local flooding. At the same time, summer drying in the interior of the continent is likely to contribute to low water levels in inland waterways. Strong mid-latitude storms are likely to become more frequent and hurricane rainfall and wind speeds are also likely increase in response to human-induced warming. Coastal transportation infrastructure is vulnerable to the combined effects of storm surge and global sea-level rise. Transportation planning operates on several different time scales. Road planners typically look out 25 years. Railroad planners consider 50 years. And bridges and underpasses are generally designed with 100 years in mind. In all cases, planning that takes likely changes into consideration will be important. Biography: Dr. Thomas C. Peterson is a research meteorologist at NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, North Carolina. After earning his Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science from Colorado State University in 1991, Tom primarily engaged in creating NCDC’s global land surface data set used to quantify long-term global climate change. Key areas of his expertise include data archaeology, quality control, homogeneity testing, international data exchange and global climate analysis using both in situ and satellite data. He was a lead author on the Nobel Prize winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s Fourth Assessment Report.
