Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it
On 11 October 1537, Henry VIII finally received the son for which he had been waiting for decades. The day before the future Edward VI was born, friars, priests, livery companies, and the mayor and aldermen of London all processed through the city streets, praying for the Queen's safe delivery. With his birth te deums were sung in London's churches, bells were rung, fires were lit in every street, and volleys of gunfire resounded from the walls of the Tower of London It was a classic Tudor event, combining as it did fears of a failed royal secession; civic drama; at times contradictory religious impulses and emotions; thrusting military power; and seemingly endless classical images and allusions. Tudor England is not composed simply of the reigns of the Tudor monarchs but by “decades of war and poverty, disease and destruction…a subtle but strong transformation in the nature of government, and complex shifts within economy and society… an outpouring of words [and] an ideological revolution in religious belief…” With me to touch on some of the characteristics of this tumultuous era is Lucy Wooding, Langford fellow and and Tutor at Lincoln College in the University of Oxford, and author of Tudor England: A History. A few years ago, very few people might have guessed that cloud computing would become such a big part of our lives. Today, it's hard to imagine living without the cloud. There's no doubt that cloud computing is the future, and that future is looking very bright when it comes to ecommerce. In this blog post, we'll take a closer look at the role of cloud-based ecommerce in the future of online shopping, discuss the benefits that it has to offer and why increasingly more businesses are moving to the cloud, as well as show how you can make the switch. Let's dive right in. Cloud computing and ecommerce Have you ever wondered how online stores keep their websites running so smoothly? The answer, in most cases, is cloud computing – a type of internet-based computing that provides shared processing resources and data to connected devices on demand. In other words, cloud computing is a way to store and access information remotely. Cloud-based ecommerce platforms therefore store all of a business's data – such as product information, customer details, and website files – on remote servers. This means businesses can access their data from anywhere in the world, at any time. For example, there are many London IT support companies who can help your business to transfer from on-premises to cloud solutions. The benefits of cloud-based ecommerce There are many reasons why eccomerce businesses use cloud computing to run their online stores. We've identified the four biggest advantages below. #1 Cost-effectiveness With cloud computing, you only pay for the resources that you actually use. Compared to the costs of setting up and hosting your own ecommerce website, this can lead to significant savings in the long run. Additionally, cloud-based ecommerce platforms are often subscription-based, which means that you'll have a predictable monthly fee. This makes it much easier to budget for your ecommerce business compared to traditional hosting models, the costs of which can fluctuate month-to-month. #2 Performance Cloud-based ecommerce platforms are designed to provide a fast, smooth, and enjoyable experience for both customers and store owners. With cloud computing, businesses can take advantage of the latest technologies and innovations to ensure that their websites are always running at peak performance. What's more, cloud-based ecommerce platforms are updated regularly with the latest security patches and features. This means that business owners can rest assured that their online stores are always kept up-to-date with the latest industry standards. #3 Scalability Another advantage of cloud-based ecommerce platforms is that they are designed to be highly scalable, and so they can easily handle sudden increases in traffic or spikes in sales volume. This is perfect for businesses that experience seasonal peaks or are rapidly growing and need to scale their websites quickly and efficiently. Scalability is one of the biggest advantages of cloud-based ecommerce, and it's something that traditional, on-premise solutions simply can't match. #4 Security When it comes to security, cloud-based ecommerce platforms are in a league of their own. Thanks to having their data stored on remote servers instead of locally, businesses can rest assured that their information is safe and secure without having to worry about losing it if something happens to a computer or document storage. Additionally, cloud-based ecommerce platforms often have built-in security features such as firewalls, intrusion detection, and data encryption. This further protects businesses from the threats of cybercrime and gives them peace of mind that their customers' data is always safe. Taking your ecommerce business to the cloud The advantages of cloud-based ecommerce are clear, but making the switch from traditional hosting can seem like a daunting task. However, with a little bit of planning and the help of a professional, you can make the transition quickly and smoothly. How to cho...

In this episode of the Powerful Stories Podcast, we had the opportunity to hear from journalist Shelly Horton. Shelly is the master of being heard and voicing her opinion on sticky situations – it’s what we all love the most about her. Shelly’s high school guidance counsellor said she talked to much and should dial it down. So, how do you take what someone said you shouldn’t do and translate that into a business skill? Shelly says, “I’m employed for my brain, not how I look and that has been a big switch that I want to instil in other women.” Dealing with internet trolls has become part of Shelly’s life, ‘unfortunately, we’ve lost that ability to have a debate and not attack the other person’. Her advice – ‘Don’t try and deal with it yourself.’ Shelly sees Dr Happy who encouraged her to list the ten people whose opinion matter to you and discount the rest. ‘It’s a psychological trick but it really does bring your power back.’ So many women feel they don’t have a voice, however, Shelly is not afraid to deep dive into a topic and voice an opinion and shares her top 3 tips for being heard as a leader or advocate for change – Firstly, ‘remember the 5 Ps – Prior Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance.’ Write down (in dot points) and rehearse the conversation in the mirror. Then prepare your body – focus on your breathing and warm up just like you would run a marathon. And finally, ‘Don’t be afraid to be vulnerable yourself - vulnerability opens up a chance to connect.’ Shelly says, ‘I believe everyone has a voice and everyone deserves to be herd – if you’re honest, vulnerable and show all your sides you are setting an attainable goal.” Shelly’s advice for women who want to be heard amongst the chatter on social media – ‘You need to work hard on your brand, be consistent, deep dive into your core values and take every opportunity to learn from others. Make sure to say no to things that don’t vibrate well with you and yes to what does align with your values. One of Shelly’s most powerful steps came from a lie. Her career as a television presenter started in London - ‘It was one of those things where I just jumped in and made it happen.’ When you’re not someone who has been handed opportunities and you’ve had to hustle for so long, to actually have that success and belief in yourself, it’s a game-changer.” So, sit back and enjoy this powerful story with the extraordinary Shelly Horton. In this episode, Kyle and Joe interview Ben Sessa, a Consultant Psychiatrist. Ben comes on the show to talk about preliminary results from the first ever, MDMA assisted therapy for alcohol use disorder (AUD). 3 Key Points: Ben Sessa plays a role in leading the current MDMA assisted therapy study for alcohol use disorder, and shares preliminary results. In the current stage, out of the first 12 patients, 2 have turned back to drinking, 5 have stayed completely dry and another 5 who have had a drink or two but have not relapsed back to their typical levels of consumption. Most people with a long term substance addiction have a history of trauma. MDMA can help people feel safe, in order to work through and heal trauma. Navigating Psychedelics Trip Journal Integration Workbook Show Notes Preliminary Results They had 13 people in the study, and they took data on 4 people The first caveat in these results is that there was no blinding and no placebo in this study There is no way to tell that it was solely the drug that resulted in the effects In terms of tolerability, everyone preferred it to other treatment, there were no bad reactions to the MDMA, there were no negative reactions, it was a total success in terms of tolerability In the current stage, out of the first 12 patients, 2 have turned back to drinking, 5 have stayed completely dry and another 5 who have had a drink or two but have not relapsed back to their typical levels of consumption They did a similar study previous to this one except without the MDMA and they had 11 patients, 9 of them went back to their full level of consumption They chose alcohol use disorder because it's so difficult to treat All patients are recruits from local drug and alcohol services Ben picks them up after they have detoxed, after they have been cured of the physical dependence, but when they have yet to be cured of the psychological dependence They receive 2 dosing days within their 8 week therapy (usually weeks 3 and 6) They do 125mg and then half that size dose 2 hours later, which sustains the high Ben mentions that recruitment is difficult, a lot of people have a drinking problem, but they can't have patients that are depressed, suicidal, pregnant, epileptic, etc. Future for the Study Up until next March, they are continuing to take in new patients for the study to have more data The next step is to have a randomized control study This current study is sponsored by Imperial College of London It's not a MAPS sponsored study, it's the first non MAPS, MDMA study The main papers, with all the data are over a year and a half away from publishing Addiction and Trauma “MDMA addiction is as rare as a hen with teeth.” - Ben “Most people with a long term substance addiction have a history of trauma.” - Ben Trauma and PTSD is highly treatment resistant There are certain drugs that inhibit fear response, such as alcohol, heroin, etc They make you forget the pain but you can't work with them and do therapy with them, with MDMA you can MDMA can help people feel safe, in order to work through and heal trauma “We are all the products of our attachment relationships.” - Ben Breaking Convention This past year was the 5th one There were 1300 attendees from all over the world What's wonderful about Breaking Convention is how multidisciplinary it is There's the guy in the gray suit in one room talking about high level neuroscience and a hippie with dreads in the other room talking about the spirits that live in the Salvia leaves Ben says they work really hard to make that balance work There's a lot of debate and conflict in the psychedelic movement right now, Breaking Convention is very important for creating space for this debate Looking ahead Ben is looking into opening a clinic He mentions academia is not his area of study, he is a clinician, but this research is an excuse to treat patients Links Breaking Convention About Ben Sessa Ben Sessa is a consultant psychiatrist in adult addictions, working part-time at Addaction in Weston-Super-Mare and is senior research fellow at Bristol, Cardiff and Imperial College London Universities, where he is currently taking time off clinical medical practice to study towards a PhD in MDMA Psychotherapy. He has specialist training as a child and adolescent psychiatrist and is interested in the developmental trajectory from child maltreatment to adult mental health disorders. Dr Sessa’s joint interests in psychotherapy, pharmacology and trauma have lead him towards researching the subject of drug-assisted psychotherapy using psychedelic adjuncts. He is the author of two books exploring psychedelic medicine; The Psychedelic Renaissance (2012) and To Fathom Hell or Soar Angelic (2015) and is currently conducting research with Imperial College London and Cardiff universities studying the potential role for MDMA-assisted therapy for the treatment of PTSD and alcohol dependence syndrome. Dr Sessa is outspoken on lobbying for change in the current system by which drugs are classified in the UK, believing a more progressive policy of regulation would reduce the harms of recreational drug use. He is a co-founder and director of the UK’s Breaking Convention conference.

LONDON — It looks as if 2019 will be the year when a number of high profile tech companies are going public. Ride-haling company Lyft is first in line, followed by its bigger rival Uber. They are not the only companies who have signalled their intention to float; messaging start-up Slack, image company Pinterest and food delivery company Postmates are all moving closer to IPOs. There is good intentions in the flotations of Uber and Lyft for their drivers, as both companies have indicated that they are planning to offer cash bonuses to some of their longest-serving or most-active drivers which they can put into shares in the company. Estimations for the value of two ride-haling companies have been estimate at between $20bn and $30bn for Lyft while Uber comes in at around $120bn. In an interview with Bloomberg’s Joe Weisenthal, Rett Wallace of Triton.ai gave a list of factors that investors should consider before investing in newly-listed IPOs. He says big IPO listings have become less common. - Linda van Tilburg
LONDON — It has been a tough year for Snap, maker of the photo messaging app, Snapchat as it lost users to competitors like Instagram. It didn’t help when a Kardashian influencer tweeted that she did not open Snapchat anymore. The company managed to stem the flow by the three months to end December with the latest results beating Wall Street estimates. Losses were curtailed to $192m on revenue of $390m. This compared favourably with a loss of $360m on revenue of $286m a year before. Forecasts of Snap’s premature demise were obviously overdone, and shares jumped 25% on the numbers. Technology columnist Shira Ovide explained to Bloomberg’s Lisa Abramowiscz and Paul Sweeney why Snap managed to turn it around… - Linda van Tilburg

Inside The Mouse Castle: Disney News, Information and Commentary
After an unexpected week away from the show, Tim and Anthony are back with their take on Season of the Force at Disneyland. Is the Star Wars overlay of Tomorrowland worth your attention? Spoiler Alert: Hyperspace Mountain is about as good as you could hope for. And because they're easily distracted, they also talk about Adele, Pirates of the Caribbean overlays, Strange Magic, Mouse Castle charities and Honey, I Shrunk the Audience. They're pretty much all over the place. Again. They do manage to stay on topic, sort of, for this stuff: J.J. Abrams made it official: Star Wars: The Force Awakens is done. Completed. Finito. No more tinkering. Nada. Can we see it now? The Force Awakens has blown past $50 million in advance ticket sales before its December 18 release. This begs the question, will we ever again be as excited about a new Star Wars movie as we are right now? One person who doesn't seem to be as thrilled about Episode VII as the rest of us is...surprise!...George Lucas. He's made some curious comments recently about the latest installment of the film franchise he started. Butt-hurt, table for one. Want to go to the premiere of Star Wars: The Force Awakens in L.A. or London? It could happen. Just pry open your wallet and be generous about it. www.omaze.com/experiences/starwarspremiere We are sad to learn that Alex Hirsch, creator of Gravity Falls, is pulling the plug on the animated series when its second season comes to a close. We are seriously going to miss Dipper, Mabel, Grunkle Stan and all the other denizens of the Mystery Shack. To make up for the loss of revenue from the Fantasmic! dining packages at Disneyland when the show goes on hiatus in January, the park will begin offering dining packages for the Paint the Night parade. More details coming soon. In an effort to make Disney's Animal Kingdom more than a half-day park, a new Rivers of Light nighttime show will debut at the park next spring. It will incorporate many of the lighting, water and projection effects we've come to know and (mostly) love in Fantasmic! and World of Color to create a distinctly mystical, nature-themed show. Captain EO will end its run at Epcot on December 6. And while no official announcement has been made at Disneyland, we think it's unlikely to return there as well.
