Beyond the highways and byways lies a world of hidden automotive treasures most people never discover. Our journey begins in Houston, uncovering six remarkable destinations that fly under most visitors' radars. We explore the Sam Houston Boat Tour, offering free 90-minute cruises that reveal the bustling Port of Houston from a completely different perspective. Then we venture into Buffalo Bayou Park, a surprising 160-acre natural oasis nestled right in downtown Houston, complete with walking trails and family-friendly activities. For automotive enthusiasts, we uncover the Art Car Museum (affectionately called "Garage Mahal"), showcasing vehicles transformed into rolling works of art. Just outside the city, we visit the impressive Hemi Hideout, housing an extraordinary collection of restored Mopars and Americana in a 21,000-square-foot facility that's an attraction all its own. Racing fans will appreciate our discovery of the Houston Motorsports Museum, preserving Texas racing heritage with collections ranging from IndyCars to NASCAR machines. We round out our Houston exploration with the Lone Star Flight Museum, which surprisingly includes significant automotive elements like World War II Jeeps and military vehicles. The conversation shifts to "banned, crushed, and forgotten muscle" – those legendary cars that never quite made it to glory. From the ultra-rare 1969 Chevrolet Corvette ZL1 (only two ever built) to Ford's answer to the Dodge Charger Daytona – the 1971 Ford Torino King Cobra – we examine six fascinating vehicles that represent automotive history's road not taken. These cars, often too expensive, too radical, or victims of changing regulations, offer a glimpse into what might have been.We conclude with a comprehensive review of the completely redesigned 2024 Ford Ranger Raptor. This midsize pickup delivers impressive off-road capabilities with Fox shocks, increased wheel travel, and a powerful 3.0-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost engine generating 405 horsepower. Starting at $57,065 for the Raptor version, we examine how it stacks up against competitors like the Toyota Tacoma TRD and Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison. The Hot Rod Tour Takes Texas: Adventures on the Road

Take a ride with us as we catch up with the Hot Rod Tour of Texas at Spindletap Brewery on Houston's north side. What started four years ago as a modest gathering has evolved into a 300-car caravan of classic automobiles winding through the scenic back roads of the Lone Star State.Tour organizer Jeremy reveals the behind-the-scenes efforts that make this automotive adventure possible – months of scouting routes, coordinating police escorts, and finding unique venues that can accommodate hundreds of vintage vehicles. The tour deliberately avoids highways and toll roads, instead taking participants through charming small towns where children line up outside schools to wave at the procession of rumbling engines. The heart of the Hot Rod Tour isn't just about the impressive machinery – it's about the community that forms when car enthusiasts share the open road. When a breakdown occurs, multiple vehicles pull over to help. One participant even brought a trailer specifically to assist anyone experiencing mechanical troubles. These moments of camaraderie, along with experiences like dining inside the Lone Star Flight Museum or visiting the Hack Winery in Santa Fe, create lasting memories that keep participants returning year after year. The conversation shifts to a broader discussion about American versus foreign cars, with interesting statistics about where vehicles are actually assembled (Tesla tops the list of American-made cars at 89%) and changing perceptions about quality and longevity. The hosts also touch on the growing hybrid market as a pragmatic middle ground between traditional vehicles and fully electric options.Whether you're a dedicated gearhead or simply appreciate the rolling art of classic automobiles, this episode captures the spirit of Texas car culture and the special connections formed when enthusiasts gather to celebrate their passion. The road is calling, and the Hot Rod Tour of Texas is answering with an epic 488-mile journey across some of the Lone Star State's most scenic regions. Bobby Sparkman and Jeremy Taylor join us to unveil their meticulously crafted route for the tour's fourth year, which has already attracted over 300 classic car enthusiasts for the sold-out event.Starting in Victoria (the self-proclaimed "best kept secret in Texas"), participants will enjoy a unique garage crawl through five local automotive businesses before kicking off the evening with live music from The Crowbars in the downtown square. From there, the adventure truly begins with a police-escorted departure from historic Riverside Stadium, winding through coastal towns like Port Lavaca and Palacios where shrimping fleets and waterfront vistas create perfect photo opportunities. The journey continues with exclusive stops at Haak Winery, the Lone Star Flight Museum (complete with flight simulators!), Spindletap Brewery, and the impressive Guitars and Classic Cars venue in Montgomery. Each location offers catered meals, entertainment, and the camaraderie that makes this tour so special. The organizers have thought of everything – from police escorts through small towns to perfectly timed rest stops and even bringing The Crowbars band along to perform at multiple venues. We also dive into the 2025 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid, a compelling crossover offering distinctive styling with its angular wheel arches and modern interior. With 268 combined horsepower, 35 MPG efficiency, and up to 30 miles of electric-only range, it represents a strong value at $43,000 as tested – though potential tariffs on Korean-built vehicles may impact future pricing.Whether you're planning your next automotive adventure or considering a hybrid for your daily commute, this episode delivers insider knowledge from passionate experts who understand what makes cars and driving experiences truly special. Retired Lieutenant General Doug Owens is the CEO of the Lone Star Flight Museum where you can go see some of the most famous airplanes in the history of aviation. Most planes in the museum are flight worthy and it is indeed possible to buy a "ride" on an old warbird. It's the stuff of great birthday and Christmas gifts, that's for sure. They are also the home of the Texas Aviation Hall of Fame and naturally, the museum is also an educational institution and coming up, they have summer camps for children aged 10-12. To fund these camps and its other programs, the museum is holding the Blue Skies Gala on May 18. www.lonestarflight.org
