This one is going to be hard for most agency owners to hear, but you need to take a sabbatical — or a vacation or any amount of time off where you completely unplug from the agency. No Slack, no email, no phone calls. Nothing. Most of you just got really uncomfortable reading that statement, but it's absolutely necessary if you want your agency to grow. In fact, not taking time off could be stifling agency growth more than you realize. Every time you jump into a meeting with a client that your project manager or AE could be taking, or you need to sign off on a minor thing that your leadership team could handle, you're making it harder for your team — and your agency — to grow. Louise Oliver is going to share her story of how she was exactly like many of you, stressing over her maternity leave and avoiding deleting work apps off of her devices. And then she did it. She realized how much that time off helped her and her agency grow exponentially. So, tune in and take the sabbatical. Balancing personal life and work can be tough for business owners. In this episode, we explore how leaders can step back, let their teams step up, and find clarity along the way. Louise Oliver, president of Peritus PR, shares her story of how stepping away from her role led to unexpected growth for her team. Louise opens up about the doubts she had before her recent maternity leave and how completely disconnecting from work for three months—no emails, no check-ins—was both scary and freeing. During that time, her team found new ways to work together, leaning on each other and building stronger connections. "I realized I had been robbing them of an opportunity to forge their own bond and trust one another in the trenches," Louise says. She talks about the lessons she learned by letting go and how embracing her "irrelevance" as a leader helped her team thrive. Louise shares some surprising benefits of stepping back and offers practical advice for other leaders ready to do the same. Key Takeaways Business owners should embrace the challenge of disconnecting fully, trusting their teams to manage and grow in their absence. Taking a real leave, whether for personal reasons or a sabbatical, can be transformational for both the individual leader and the organization. Fully stepping away can reveal new strengths within a team and foster unexpected collaboration and efficiency. Leaders need to trust in their team's capabilities and empower them to make decisions independently. Personal growth and organizational development often occur when leaders allow themselves to be "irrelevant" in day-to-day operations. About the Guest Louise Oliver is the president and founder of Peritus PR, one of Alabama's most respected communications firms, known for its innovative approach to public relations and advocacy. Louise has led Peritus PR to become a trusted partner for clients when the stakes are high. Her leadership is driven by a vision to build a firm that transcends traditional agency norms and outlives its founders, fostering a work culture that values purpose over burnout. Louise's career journey is marked by several unique milestones, including lessons learned from running an Alabama-based company from Italy, culture-building in an industry notorious for burnout, and charting a new path as a young small-business owner dedicated to playing well in the sandbox. Her greatest passion is empowering her team to use their gifts to move Alabama forward. Outside of work, she is a proud mother of three under five—two boys and a baby girl—is married to a former U.S. Air Force dentist and resides in Mobile, Alabama. Bishop Trimble says, “I am compelled by Jesus to share with you an encouraging word or two about Jesus, theology, the bible, the pandemic, the environment, racism, voting rights, human sexuality and state of the United Methodist Church.” In Episode 001 Bishop Trimble speaks about how faith helps people to persevere through difficult times like the ongoing pandemic. He talks about biblical faith expounding from Hebrew 11 that faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. Bishop speaks about prayer and love of neighbor and how our purpose as Christians is to love one another as key parts of living life of faith which helps people to preserve through challenging times. He goes on to talk about putting faith into action through works of service to others. Bishop Trimble concluded the podcast by speaking about the upcoming episode of the To Be Encouraged Podcast which will feature his observations on the topic of persevering through challenging times in the church. Bishop Trimble shared that creating this podcast was inspired by his wife First Lady Racelder Grandberry-Trimble. He dedicated the inaugural episode to a member of one of his former churches Mrs. Louise Oliver who inspired him with her life of faith. To Be Encouraged with Bishop Julius C. Trimble is to be published weekly and is available at www.tobeencouraged.com and all the podcast directories. https://www.inumc.org/bishop/office-of-the-bishop/ (https://www.inumc.org/bishop/office-of-the-bishop/)

After a little bit of podcast hiatus we welcome back our super busy co-founder Louise Oliver. This week Louise sits down with the hilarious and very lovely Karen Bartke. Karen Bartke is a Scottish actor from Glasgow. Appearing on stage from an early age, Karen first found her feet as a member of Glasgow Schools Youth Theatre, before studying for a degree in archaeology. The lure of the stage was strong, however, and in recent years Karen has converted her long-held passion for performing into a successful stage and screen career. Karen is probably best known as Desk Sgt Karen Ann Miller (Officer Karen) in BBC One mockumentary Scot Squad for the Comedy Unit. She was recently seen in Planet Hogmanay on BBC Scotland, contributing alongside Darren Connell, Billy Kirkwood, Alex Norton, Sanjeev Kohli. She has also appeared in Fakers for Aficionado Films; in a series of comedy sponsorship idents for the ITV talent search show Superstar and in Episode 1 of The Kronicles of Kirk, a series of Comedy Blaps for Channel 4 directed by Noddy Davidson, produced by the Comedy Unit and starring James Kirk. Karen’s stage credits have been wide and varied in recent years. In 2014, she originated the role of Suzy in Tamasha Theatre Company’s My Name Is…., written by Sudha Bhuchar and directed by Philip Osment. Karen was deeply honoured to be nominated for an Offie award for Best Female Performance for the original production at the Arcola Theatre in London and returned to the role for the subsequent UK tours, receiving a further nomination for an ACTA Award for Best Female Performance: Stage in the 2015 tour of My Name Is…. Money Box
Beware student loan overpayments

More than 90,000 graduates were refunded hundreds of pounds last year after HMRC took payments for their student loan even though they had paid it off. Money Box has discovered these overpayments are routinely taken for many months because HMRC fails to communicate properly with the Student Loans Company. The programme hears from graduates who've experienced this and from tax expert Graham Farquhar at RSM. The UK's biggest doorstep lender is in trouble. Shares in Provident Financial plummeted 65% at the end of August. They have recovered slightly but now the company has issued another profit warning after trying to modernise its business and save costs. Doorstep lending began over a hundred years ago. Local agents arrange loans in customers' homes and collect repayments weekly. The sums involved are often small. But the interest charged is very high - more than 500% on a six month loan. A former Provident Financial Agent Ian sheds light on how the business of doorstep lending works. And Peter Tutton from the debt charity Stepchange outlines his concerns. Big changes are coming in the way that investment funds treat their clients. From January they will have to bill customers separately for the cost of research - at the moment it is bundled into the annual charges. Some funds - like the US mutual Vanguard - have said they will absorb all research costs. That could bring charges down. But there are other changes all being brought in under a European Directive that could put charges up. Louise Oliver, Chartered Wealth Manager and Director of Piercefield Oliver and Gina Miller, Director of fund manager SCM Direct, debate the issues.
