Telling your kids and you're getting a divorce is scary and hard. The world as they know it is about to forever change and feel like it is falling apart. In many cases regardless of the conflict between the parents, they can rally for the sake of the kids. In deeply high conflict situations, this isn't always possible. So when do you tell, what do you tell, do you tell all the kids together, and how do you determine if you should tell them with your soon to be ex or by yourself. My golden rule is you always do what is best for the kids, not what's best for you or your spouse. Today we get to hear guidance, advice and wisdom from one of the top experts in the field!!Christina McGhee is a divorce-parenting expert AND coach with 20+ years of experience, Christina is passionate about providing parents and professionals with information that helps keep the focus where it belongs – on kids. She is the author of the highly acclaimed book, Parenting Apart: How separated and divorced parents can raise happy and secure kids and the creator of a Co-Parenting Specialist Certification Training Program for divorce professionals. As a child of divorce and a bonus mom (aka stepmom), Christina has had lots of opportunities to practice what she preaches. Together she and her husband have four "adultish" children (2 bonus, 2 bio) and live outside of Houston, Texas, with three rescue dogs, several cats, and a ridiculous number of chickens. What advice do you have for parents about how to tell their kids they're getting a divorce? When should parents tell kids? ( ie. right away? wait till they file or are closer to completing the process? right before the other parent moves out? )What if parents can't transition into two homes right away? What should parents do? I know you believe words are powerful. What kind of language do you recommend parents use with their children when they talk about divorce? How should parents answer the question "Why?"What if co-parents have older children - teens or tweens? How much information should they have? What about really young children? like toddlers? What should parents do or say for them?More ways to connect with Christina:Website: divorceandchildren.com Instagram: @divorceandchildren Facebook: @divorceandchildren Linkedin: @christinamcghee Free +25 page Co-parenting Resource Guide: https://divorceandchildren.com/guide/This free +25-page comprehensive guide put together by Christina McGhee is filled with a treasure trove of carefully curated resources to help you access supportive information for you and your kids.Journey Beyond Divorce Resources mentioned in this episode:Book a Free Rapid Relief Call: http://rapidreliefcall.com Reclaim Your Mind: Evict Your Spouse from Your Mental Space: https://www.jbddivorcesupport.com/reclaimyourmindSoberlink: www.soberlink.com/jbd

Karlee Holden joins Susan Guthrie for a deeply personal and insightful discussion of uncovering, exploring, and healing the trauma bonds that shape us. Karlee is a Trauma Practitioner, helping people with their trauma and mental and physical health for twenty years. Karlee explains that healing from trauma is not just talking about your problems; it's unwinding the fight-flight response from the nervous system and the body by developing boundaries. In this episode, Susan and Karlee discuss the importance of establishing boundaries, understanding unhealthy relationships and family patterns, and ultimately unwinding what has been holding us back from being our truest selves. You'll hear: Why ignoring trauma only perpetuates its effects and leads to more stress. Setting healthy boundaries is crucial for maintaining healthy relationships. “Healthy boundaries are essential for our mental and emotional well-being." How to cultivate awareness of your emotions and triggers, and practice self-regulation to manage stress and anxiety. "Focus on what you can control. You can't control the external circumstances, but you can control your responses, behaviors, and self-care practices." Seek support. You can seek support from therapists, counselors, or support groups when dealing with trauma and emotional challenges. **************************************** About this week's special guest: Karlee Holden Karlee Holden is the Author of the Can You Please Talk To My...Book Series. Dr. Lofas herself is a divorcee, successfully remarried. (She is also a stepchild and a stepmother.) She has been helping stepfamilies for more than four decades and said there is not a question she hasn't answered. Dr. Lofas believes that the stepfamily does not and cannot function as a biological family. Author of four books, she has deep and specific knowledge of the science of the stepfamily system where the roles and rules are very different from traditional marriages. More an expert consultant than a traditional therapist, Lofas offers an approach which is actionable, practical and solution based to help you succeed in this different dynamic. She defines responsibilities and contributions for every member of the stepfamily and teaches communication skills, focusing on positivity, manners, visitation, the prior spouse, co-parenting and more. Dr. Lofas believes solutions come from education about how to manage stepfamily relationships – and she speaks to everyone in the family. Lofas is also a Certified Divorce and Co-Parenting Mediator. Lofas is former TV reporter/film critic for ABC, NBC and CBS. In her linked in profile she provides some background as to how she became a stepfamily expert: "When I remarried I found myself lost and in conflict within my own new family. I was amazed to find that my beloved husband sided with his four girls rather than me. Before we got marred his girls and I were best of pals. I was devastated. My husband and I began fighting over his not taking my side, discipline, putting his children before me, and my 10-year-old son. Dismayed I contacted every therapist in the state and then began to call all over the US. There was no one there. Having come out of TV on air broadcast news and being an experienced interviewer I turned to looking for and talking to others in similar situations. From that information I created my first book. Divorce etc... podcast hosted by the exEXPERTS (T.H. & Jessica)
It's hard to see our kids be disappointed, especially when it stems from their other parent letting them down. It's instinct to want to protect them from that hurt, which often comes in the form of covering for that other parent. It could be as simple as getting the birthday gift for the party they're invited to on your ex's weekend, or as big as making excuses when your ex doesn't show up when they're supposed to. But shielding them from the inevitable disappointment from a difficult person isn't always the best thing for your kids. Parenting expert Christina McGhee explains how to deal with this kind of situation in divorce, and what's actually the better way to handle things. (Guest: Christina McGhee, MSW, Parenting Expert, Author "Parenting Apart: How Separated and Divorced Parents Can Raise Happy and Secure Kids") Email hello@exexperts.com if you would like to set up a private session with Jessica and T.H. to help with your process! “Mom, did Dad cheat on you?” If and when your child comes to you with questions about why you and your ex are divorcing, do you know how you plan to respond? This week, Christina McGhee joins me to talk about how to walk the line between not gaslighting your children versus not throwing a co-parent under the bus or telling children truths that might be too hard for them to hear. In this episode, you'll hear practical strategies for maneuvering this complex situation. This is an important episode for any parent going through a divorce or experiencing hardships in their relationship. As you listen, please remember to allow yourself grace as you walk this difficult journey with your kids. Featured topics include: How to communicate with kids about the ‘whys' around the ending of your marriage (4:55) A reminder that you do not need to give a full accounting of your marital issues (13:20) Meet your kids where they're at, and focus on their feelings. (14:08) You don't need all of the answers in order to have a conversation with your children. (20:58) Think before you speak and consider: Do you need to share certain information because your child should hear it or because you feel the need to tell it? (23:02) How to respond when your child says their co-parent is not emotionally available to have a conversation or listen to them, and how to help your kids learn to cope. (25:28) Learn more about Christina McGhee: Christina McGhee, MSW is an internationally recognized divorce parenting expert, speaker, and author. Divorce and Children, created by Christina McGhee is one of the most comprehensive resources for parents. I was honored to interview the founder, Christina, in this episode. She is a child of divorce herself and also a bonus mom! She and I speak about the importance of language when speaking about divorce. For example, "step-mom" can easily be replaced with "bonus mom". She also shares what pillars are needed for children after divorce, why discipline is still important, and also acknowledges just how hard all of this can be. The empathy and understanding that Christina carries for parents is what makes her such a great teacher. She also got to share about her book and the incredible new film series, Split. I hope you enjoy this conversation that I had with Christina McGhee as much as I did. With the flurry of holidays right around the corner, it's time for a Special Bonus Episode to help you handle those Holiday Hassles and deal with all the hard stuff when it comes to your children and divorce. Susan is joined again but America's Favorite Parenting Expert and Best-Selling Author, Christina McGhee for deep dive into what really matters for your kids as you navigate two homes as a family. The episode tackles the really tough stuff that includes having to practice radical acceptance of what is as well as facing the fact that in some instances, well-meaning parents can actually bring additional strain on their children at what is supposed to be the happiest time of year. Christina shares so many Golden Nuggets in this episode that it is hard to narrow it down to just a few but some key points she makes are: Start with the question, "what needs to stay the same and what needs to change?" Don't forget what it feels like to be a child during the holidays - it is easy to get caught up in our own feelings of loss but what is truly important? Remember that when you emphasize being "fair" about the timeshare during holidays, kids can feel like a commodity. Sometimes we have to accept that it is what it is and focus on making what we do have the best that it can be. Different doesn't have to mean devastating. Why the term "for now" needs to be your mantra. This is THE episode that will help you face and deal with all the hard stuff about the holiday season head on so that you and your kids CAN have a happy holiday season! ***************************************** About this week's special guest: Christina McGhee Christina McGhee is a speaker and divorce parenting expert who believes divorce doesn't have to equal devastation for families. Christina McGhee is back on the show! She joins me to talk about the language we use around divorce, co-parenting, and raising our children. The language we use can be damaging to our children, so this is such an important conversation to have and I hope you get a lot out of listening to it. In fact, even as a professional in this space, I have recently learned how to shift my language about divorce topics. Words matter and the way we convey our ideas do too. Christina McGhee, MSW is an internationally recognized divorce parenting expert, speaker, and author. Whether she is speaking, coaching, or writing her goal is to disrupt the status quo, and change divorce for the better by helping families redefine themselves in meaningful ways. Show Highlights The way we talk about co-parenting with children by using the term “visitation” and why it's a terrible term to use (5:53) When parents focus on what's “fair” for them, children internalize that their actions must be “fair” in order to make their parents feel ok (12:05) What is wrong with the word custody, how it affects children, and why parenting time is a better term to use (21:10) When we talk about equitable time-sharing arrangements, we are talking about equal responsibility, plus Christina talks about the off-duty and on-duty parenting model (26:57) Why treating time with children as a commodity (50/50, 60/40, etc.) is damaging (39:59) What is wrong with referring to your co-parent as your ex (51:53)
Today, we are making invisible things visible for people who are struggling with the incredibly difficult experience of divorce, redefining the adult and parenting relationships inside - and outside - of a family unit, and how to find the support you need to get through to the other side. I am talking to Ashley Wood, Divorce Transition & Recovery Coach, Certified Divorce Coach® and our own Conscious Parenting Coach, Sabrina Belo. We cover: What is the one question you can ask yourself to regain some emotional regulation as a triggered co-parent? What are the signs of a ‘high-conflict' divorce, and what do I do if I'm in one? How do you know if you have the right mediator? Helpful perspective shifts for transitions in parenting. Resources mentioned in the show: What you should know about Family Law in Ontario, Ashley's checklist for hiring a family lawyer (or mediator), Books Christina recommends: Parenting Apart: How Separated and Divorced Parents Can Raise Happy and Secure Kids by Christina McGhee, Two Homes by Claire Masurel, and Stepfamilies: Love, parenting and marriage in the first decade by James Bray, PhD. If you're a step-parent, you know how complicated that relationship can feel. For starters, society tells us stepparents are evil and someone to be despised. Changing our roles as bonus parents begins with the language we use and the consideration we employ as we speak to and about our children. It's a layered dynamic, but that doesn't have to mean it's bad. This week's podcast guest, Christina McGhee, reminds us to play the long game, and not to get caught up in the short haul. Merging histories requires mindfulness and withholding our judgements and assumptions. Whether you feel like you're a pro, or messing up everyday, just remember - where you are right now isn't where you will always be, and you can always recalibrate. Christina McGhee is a speaker and divorce parenting expert who believes divorce doesn't have to equal devastation for families. While splitting up is undeniably hard, with the right kind of information and support, she thinks parents can be children's absolute best resource as life changes. As a coach with 20+ years of experience, Christina is dedicated to providing parents with the tools and practical support they need to get it right for their kids. So, you and your spouse have decided to divorce. You’re now faced with the responsibility of telling your kids. Unfortunately, there is no script for breaking the news to them. This week, I am bringing back my friend and colleague Christina McGhee to walk listeners through the very nuanced step-by-step process of telling your children you’re getting a divorce. You and your ex are going to be co-parenting for the rest of your lives. Telling your children you’re getting divorced is the first step in parenting apart. “You can’t take the hurt away. It is going to be hard. How you handle the hard parts is what makes a huge difference for your kids.” Christina McGhee Show Highlights First and foremost, you don’t want to prematurely tell your children you are divorcing. (3:26) Instead, the most important thing is to have a plan - be thoughtful about what you say and when you plan to say it. (4:00) Christina’s thoughts on telling your children you are only separating and then tell them you are getting a divorce at some point in the future. (6:41) Not a one-off conversation, but a series of conversations. (7:42) What do you say - what kind of information do you and don’t you provide. (11:09) Why it is important to make a distinction between romantic love versus love for your children. (16:52) When is it “easiest” for children to hear that you are getting a divorce? Hint: there is never an easy time. (19:01) As a parent, you need to responsibly manage your emotions. Plus, how to plan the conversation if you (or your spouse) is an emotionally vulnerable parent. (26:35) Curbing the desire to share your version of the truth with your kids. Mitigate this action by putting children at the center. (31:09) Learn More About Christina: Christina McGhee is a “media savvy” divorce-parenting expert whose practical advice has been highlighted both online and in print. Over the years, she has been featured on television, radio, podcasts, tele-summits, and webinars. Some of the places you may have seen her are Today Parents, Parenting Magazine, The Times, Channel 4, the BBC, NYU Doctor Radio, and The Dr. Laura Berman Radio Show on the Oprah Network just to name a few. Christina is an informative and engaging guest who brings insight and strategies to help separating families deal with “real-life” challenges. As a zealous advocate for children, she does an excellent job of keeping the focus where it belongs…on kids. Christina speaks on a wide range of topics from what to do in the beginning stages of separation to dealing with issues years down the road. She is also skilled at addressing tough issues like discipline differences, dealing with a difficult ex, high-conflict personalities, badmouthing, and neutralizing divorce drama. When The Other Parent (And Their Lawyer) Are Assh*les In today's episode, I had a remarkable discussion with Christina McGhee, MSW, an internationally recognized divorce parenting expert, speaker and author, who has spent most of her career educating parents and professionals on how to minimize the impact of divorce on children. She's written a book called PARENTING APART: How separated and divorced parents can raise happy and secure kids. Most recently, she worked on a super powerful documentary called Split which discusses the separation effect on the kid. In our discussion, she mentioned that in the process of uncoupling, it happens very often that problems in the partnership translates to the other party being identified as having a problem with parenting as well. When in reality, they are separate issues. She also highlighted the importance of having support and access to information to get through the process of divorce well and more quickly. This enables families to make better choices, help keep them grounded, and allow them to take a step back and respond rather than react to situations. Talking with children about divorce can be tricky. But, it's so important and there is a right and wrong way to do it. Or, I should say there are more effective methods than others. Children are observant and absorb more than you realize, so hiding information, or patronizing children can be detrimental for everyone. Listen to Christina Mcghee talk about some best practices when talking with children about divorce.
In this episode, Parenting Expert, Christina McGhee returns to talk with Susan Guthrie about all of the things that parents need to consider in order to create a parenting plan that truly works for the children. So often when parents sit down to figure out the parenting plan they pull out a calendar and start carving up the time with the kids as if it were another commodity like the bank accounts and debts. In fact, although the amount of time that children spend with each parent needs to be "equitable" it doesn't need to be 50/50. In fact, 50/50 rarely actually does (or should) exist. Find out what the most important considerations actually are for parents who are setting up a time-sharing plan with their children and what will make it successful for the kids. LISTENER QUESTION: Christina starts the episode by answering the following question from listener, Kim Cuizon about how conflict between parents affects the kids: "How about when parents don't talk at all but at the same time there are no conflicts? They're not close enough as friends but are civil during drop offs. Will this kind of apathetic relationship have lasting effects on the kids?" GREAT QUESTION AND A VERY COMMON PHENOMENA! What to know the answer? Listen in! (If you have a question for Christina, send and email to divorceandbeyondpod@gmail.com and you might hear your question answered on a future episode!) Some MORE Highlights from the Episode: How important is being fair in creating a successful parenting plan for kids? What is the two-home concept and how can parents support it? Learn how important it is properly message parenting time to your kids. Discover why your parenting plan will likely change over time. Hear why you should always follow up a verbal agreement with a quick text or email. And much more so that you can find just the right plan FOR YOUR KIDS! ***SPECIAL SERIES OF EPISODES on DIVORCE AND PARENTING! Sending your children off with your ex and then a couple days later, receiving them is one of the hardest things to do, especially in the beginning of your divorce. As grown adults we can suffer from separation anxiety. We find the separation difficult sometimes even though we might need it. To cope we might cry, call a friend, or find something to keep us busy. For children of newly divorced parents, the transitions between households can create anxiety as well. But for children, their reasoning skills are not developed, nor are their coping skills. So it's only natural that when they transition they fall apart in the first five minutes of arrival. You can almost set your watch by it. It's predictable. One child might withdraw, another might cry and fuss, and another might rebel. For these times I have a solution for you. I'm calling this my Transition Jar. Click on the link below and get your free template full of tons of ideas to help you transition your kids back home to you calmly and without anxiety. Transition Jar Download This post is close to my heart because I know just how real and anxiety ridden sending and receiving your kids can be. Be it in the early stages of your divorce or in some of the later stages of the divorce. I loved receiving my kids, but I was always anxious about it at the same time. Maybe that's you. Maybe like me you would have paid money for someone else to do it for you—a body double! Hey, now there's my next million dollar business! A service that actually will receive your kids for you so you don't have to see or deal with your ex. That would be a gold mine people! I digress. Maybe it's stressful for you to see your ex; to see how, on outward appearances, he/she is moving on. Maybe it is hard for you to receive your kids who might be going through 'meltdown' at the same time you are going through your own meltdown. In any case I have some really good stuff for you today. In this episode I reference a great article by Christina McGhee of Parenting Apart called, Helping kids transition between Mom's and Dad's house. Check it out. Christina's article compliments today's podcast and is also all about helping children of divorce transition between mom and dad's homes. I'd also like to give thanks to Ruth Soukup of Living Well Spending Less for the template for my Transition Jar ideas. You can visit Ruth at Living Well Spending Less.
