Wife of James Reynolds, and Alexander Hamilton's mistress between 1791 and 1792

Who gets to tell the story? It's the season finale, and it feels like a perfect time to travel back to 2015, when a blockbuster hip-hop musical about America's founders took the world by storm. That's right... Today, Peter and Nathan return to the room where it happened and consider the theology of Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton. _________________________________________ You'll hear: My Shot / Wait For It / The Ten Dual Commandments: Hamilton & Burr—like Valjean & Javert, like Jesus & Judas—represent oppositional forces, responding to similar circumstances with radically different approaches to life. They also each get a great “I Want” song. Burn / Quiet Uptown / Say No To This: Eliza Schuyler Hamilton, Maria Reynolds, Angelica Schuyler Church and the various roles that women play in this story. What does forgiveness look like – and what does Eliza see at the end of the musical? One Last Time / Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story: Few other musicals are so associated with presidential administrations as Hamilton is with Barack Obama. We think about the connections between the Hamilton project and the Obama project, wonder about the soft nationalism at the heart of this story, and think critically about the legacy of George Washington. Who gets to tell the story? You'll hear Lin-Manuel Miranda, Leslie Odom Jr, Phillipa Soo, Renee Elise Goldsberry, Christopher Jackson and the cast of the 2015 Original Broadway Cast Album. It won a Grammy. _________________________________________ Check out some of our all-time favorites! Phantom of the Opera Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat Jesus Christ Superstar! For this Musicals Magazine Podcast, Edward Seckerson meets Christine Allado, fresh from lending her shining soprano to the Old Friends celebrating Stephen Sondheim at London's Gielgud Theatre. Some may remember her opposite Rob Houchen in the TV documentary The Making of a Classic, chronicling the genesis of West Side Story, but onstage the Filipino actress is best known as Peggy Schuyler and Maria Reynolds – and sometimes Eliza – in Hamilton, and Tzipporah in Prince of Egypt. She's about to give her Julie Jordan in a concert staging of one of the greatest musicals ever written – Carousel.
“Scandals have been a part of history in major declarations, false truces, when political or celebrity figures need to pay someone off to protect their legacy and more.[7] Scandals can involve bribery, immoral action, shame, slander, misdoing, etc.[8] The Hamilton–Reynolds affair, which involved Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton, who had a one-year affair with Maria Reynolds during George Washington's presidency, is considered one of the first sex scandals in American political history.[9] Political sex scandals in the U.S. have included the first sex scandal of Alexander Hamilton to five major national political figures, Newt Gingrich, John Edwards, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bill Clinton and Donald Trump.[10] Men and women have to face scrutiny of their career or life in the field of politics by the media looking for scandals. Sex scandals involve sexual affairs which usually, but not always, involve infidelity. Infidelity has many definitions, either based on experience or research done on people who have been involved in the act of disloyalty and trust. To some, infidelity "is a complex phenomenon with multiple reasons driving people to cheat on their partners".[11] A 2018 New York Times article cited an American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy national survey, stating "that 15 percent of married women and 25 percent of married men have had extramarital affairs".[12] Sex scandals tend to include a bias when it comes to men and women who are caught and then need evidence to explain their situation. A 2015 study concluded that gender stereotypes were "refer(ed) to the meanings that individuals and societies ascribe to males and females".[13] According to Juliet Williams at the University of California, Los Angeles the 1998 Clinton–Lewinsky scandal in the United States made the US Congress, media, and citizens look at male candidates and politicians in a different light by "normalizing public discussion of sex acts."[14] John Edwards, David Petraeus, Anthony Weiner, Arnold Schwarzenegger, are other examples of men involved in sex scandals that have caused the public not to give men the benefit of the doubt. This has caused the debate between politics and sex scandals to be seen in a different light. It has allowed gender-shifting and the role of gender to become more unbiased in the selection of candidates during their evaluation and allows more power for women fighting against stereotypes due to scandals, and men being seen as more skeptical.[13] A year after the 2017 Harvey Weinstein sexual abuse cases was first reported, leading to the viral spread of the #MeToo movement, New York Times published a list of 201 names of prominent men in the United States who had lost their jobs following public allegations of sexual harassment.[15] Social attitudes have traditionally been less forgiving when minors are involved. In France, for example, the scandal surrounding Swiss art dealer Yves Bouvier and former call girl Zahia Dehar – for whom Bouvier allegedly acted as a pimp in the late 2000s, paying her to appear at dinners for entertainment when she was 17 years old – has caused outrage and opened a debate about powerful men in society abusing their power.[16][17] The fall from grace and imprisonment of Anthony Weiner, following his sexting of explicit pictures to a 15-year-old girl, is another notable example of the pre-#MeToo era.[18]” -Wikipedia. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/support
Christmas traditions evolved over the 19th century, combining influences from the days of the Dutch settlers with British practices inspired by the work of Dickens, and along the way, they became something truly American. In this special holiday episode, the Gilded Gentleman visits with Ann Haddad, House Historian of New York's 1832 Merchant's House Museum, and takes a look at how the well-to-do Tredwell family and their servants would have celebrated the holiday around mid-century. We then travel outside the city up to the Hudson Valley for a visit with Maria Reynolds, curator of the Mills Mansion in Staatsburgh, New York, a grand Stanford White designed country house right out of the Gilded Age. For the Mills family, the holidays of 1899 and 1900 in the country included many outdoor winter activities, including sledding and skating and even, with a great greenhouse on the estate, some special items served on holiday tables. And through some unique archival material, we'll even get a sense of just who may have come to visit for a holiday dinner.

Ashley LaLonde covers all three Schuyler Sisters, Maria Reynolds, and Woman 5 on the Philip Tour. Ashley's Hamilton story is a total full circle moment with so many incredible stops along the way. As a born and raised New Yorker, Ashley saw and fell in love with Hamilton at The Public (thanks to Lin's orthodontist, of all people!). She began singing Hamilton songs in her high school a cappella group and was determined to be in the show. Before being cast in Hamilton, Ashley did a quick stint at Harvard where she made history as the first woman to be cast (as the lead!) in a Hasty Pudding show. The Founding Fathers' first scandals of blackmail, sex, and betrayal involving George Washington, John Adams, Alexander Hamilton, and Thomas Jefferson were all published by a Philadelphia journalist whose body washed up in the James River amidst the scandals he created. Grim Investigates. This is the story of Hamilton's marital infidelities with Maria Reynolds. Of Jefferson's children with his slave Sally Hemmings. And, of the scandalmonger: James T. Callander, who uncovered and published it.The Reynolds Affair. The Hemmings Affair.
In this episode, I pull apart the narrative of the Reynolds' Pamphlet and question whether Hamilton was telling the truth, or if he used Maria Reynolds to hide a bigger scandal. I'm excited to share a series of conversations with actresses who starred in Jocelyn Bioh's play, School Girls: Or the African Mean Girls Play. These interviews were recorded with students at the Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School in Maryland. This fall, I developed a program for Jewish high schools, which are majority white spaces, to explore plays by Black playwrights, to read and watch those plays, discuss the themes, expand the art they love, and perhaps most importantly, to interview Black actors and directors who have made those plays come alive in performance. This interview is with Joanna Jones who played Ericka at the MCC production of School Girls in New York. Joanna talked to us about her similarities to Ericka, particularly the experience of being the new girl in school. The depiction of Ericka as a light-skinned young woman who gains social capital at her new boarding school in Ghana draws on themes of colorism, which Joanna calls "a prejudice within a prejudice". Joanna also answered a few questions about Hamilton, in which she played the dual role of Peggy Schuyler and Maria Reynolds on Broadway. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Today I sit down with television and film actress, Broadway star, and singer-songwriter, Jasmine Cephas Jones. Introduced into the world of entertainment by her father, actor Ron Cephas Jones, and her mother, jazz singer Kim Lesley, Jasmine went to school for the performing arts starting in middle school . She spent many years studying voice at LaGuardia High School in New York City as well as throughout her college years at Berklee College of Music. Today, Jasmine shares the feelings of vulnerability that came soon after where she felt something was missing and was unsure about exactly what kind of career she wanted to pursue. When she realized the missing link she had been searching for was acting, Jasmine immediately committed to studying the craft through experience with the LABrinth Theater Company and training in the Meisner teachings of the Neighborhood Playhouse for Theater. She shares her experiences with the peaks and valleys of the business, from being dropped by an agent, to landing the roles of Peggy Schuyler and Maria Reynolds in the Tony award winning Broadway hit musical, Hamilton. Even after conquering the world of Broadway, Jasmine ventured out to Los Angeles where she reveals she felt as if she was starting from scratch, grinding all over again to prove herself in the business of show business. While she admits to having moments of wanting to give up, Jasmine shares the mindsets she’s carried with her over the years to help keep her moving through those moments of uncertainty. The belief she has in herself has earned her an extensive list of credits including roles on, HBO’s “Girls” and “Mrs. Fletcher”, as well as roles in films such as “Blindspotting”, “The Photograph”, “Monsters and Men” and can currently be seen on Quibi’s newly released, “#FreeRayShawn”. If you’re looking for tips, be sure to take notes as Jasmine reveals details about her own process for creating riveting characters that light up the screen. In Episode 24, I ask the question "Who is God?" The answer is not a guy with a white beard sitting on a cloud. It is simpler than you might think. I argue that God -- at least in Part 1 of a multi-episode series - could be a SOUND and more specifically the Om (Ohm) sound that you repeat at the end of your yoga class. Why is God the Om sound? Om is the summation of all the vowel sounds (a, e, i, o, u, and y). Six vowels and 6 days of creation. Om is said to be the frequency of the universe resonating at 432 Hz, the frequency in which instruments are tuned in Europe and the frequency in which Mozart created his compositions. The Om Sounds (at 432 Hz) is said to have the effect of linking both halves of our brain and in the words of Maria Reynolds in her book, "Intervals Scales Tones and the Concert Pitch C=128hz, that "432Hz creates a disconnect between our bodies and consciousness." How does tie back to Cymatics? Steven Halpren's work in Cymatics shows that the Om sounds makes Elliptical shapes -- the donut shape that symbolizes the Voice of God.This episode takes you down a rabbit hole and I hope you enjoy it. Lauren Boyd is truly delightful, especially on a rainy day in New York City. Year(s) Discussed: 1791-1793 The lead up to Washington’s second inaugural ended up being much more dramatic than anyone could have imagined as personal conflicts threatened the construction of the Federal City, Hamilton’s affair with Maria Reynolds threatened to be made public knowledge, and Representative William Branch Giles filed resolutions against Hamilton accusing him of official … Continue reading 1.14 – The Second Inaugural →

Mike Bowman and Maria Reynolds named their Groundswell Farm after their farming ideology and the topography of the 7 acres they are leasing in Solon, Maine. Their 4 acres of MOFGA certified organic seed and market vegetable crops and 3 acres in cover crops crest in small hills, lending the landscape, in Reynolds’ words, likeness to the swelling sea. The name also harkens to the groundswell of general interest around sustainable organic agriculture, including seed production. Bowman and Reynolds founded their farm business in 2010 after years of varied agricultural experiences. Bowman is the sixth generation to live on the family orchard in Cornville. Bowman and Reynolds both apprenticed on MOFGA certified organic farms before attending college together at the University of Maine. While there they worked at and then co-managed the Black Bear Food Guild, a student-run organic vegetable CSA and market farm. After graduation they pursued work at other farms and at Johnny’s Selected Seeds, where Bowman worked at the research farm in Albion and Reynolds worked in the sales department in Winslow. And if we don’t pay for these costs, somebody has to…” [22:25] — Mike Bowman on Greenhorn Radio
