As a business owner, you face high highs and low lows. People often talk about the physical grind to build a business, but the mental battle is just as tough. My guest today, Mark Appel, knows what it's like to mentally battle through deep failure and loss. In 2013, Mark was drafted as the #1 overall draft pick in the MLB. But 5 years later, Mark was written off as one of the biggest busts in baseball. Then at the age of 30, after 9 years in the minor leagues, Mark made his MLB debut. Today, Mark shares how he mentally processed his own high highs and low lows while being injured and fighting his way back to the major leagues. And today, how he's navigating those same thought processes as an investor and entrepreneur. Plus Mark shares how he managed his thoughts while playing for an organization where his identity was solely based on his performance—and how you can protect your thoughts as a business owner. Host George Martin (@AstrosFansUK) is joined by special guest, 2013 No.1 overall MLB Draft pick for the Houston Astros, pitcher Mark Appel (@markappel26). In a fascinating and revealing conversation, Appel sheds light on what he has been doing over the off-season and detailing how he is approaching setting goals for the 2023 season, after his emotional achievement of finally succeeding in making his Major League Baseball debut in 2022 for the Phillies. Following this, Appel opens up in detail over his troubled years trying to manage the immense expectations of signing with the Astros as a No.1 overall Draft pick, looking at the pressures and depression he faced en route to his lowest points. Afterward, Appel moves on to assess how he was able to make it through these difficult times and rebuild himself both as a man and a baseball player, finding himself emerging on the other side with a positive outlook on life. The discussion concludes with Appel's evaluation of the controversial rule changes introduced by Major League Baseball for the 2023 season and a view on the forthcoming 2023 edition of the World Baseball Classic. #Astros #Ready2Reign #StrosAcrossTheGlobe Get over to the Apollo store for the fantastic Astros and Houston-based merch available so you can rep the best team in baseball and H-Town wherever you may be! Mark Appel was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 MLB Amateur Draft by the Houston Astros. In 2015, he was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies, but in 2018 at the age of 26, he stepped away from baseball. After three years, he announced he was making a comeback to chase his MLB dream and return to pitch professionally. He appeared in 23 games with the Phillies' Double- and Triple-A affiliates in 2021, striking out 60 batters in 71.1 innings pitched. In 2022, his dream was realized as he made his MLB debut in June with the Phillies. He would appear in 6 games, allowing two earned runs in 10.1 innings. Today on the podcast, we talk to Appel about achieving his MLB dream, remaining patient with God's plan and why he's building himself a super-van to drive around the country with. We're back and it's the Thanksgiving episode of Baseball Is Dead! We got the numbers in and it looks like we retained about 90% of our audience from the previous show which is AMAZING! Thank you to all the listeners who rode with us this year and we can't wait to take it to the next level! Just like everyone predicted, the Angels have been the most active team in the offseason to this point. Our Angels correspondent joins the pod to talk some Halos to open it up. Joey dropped a new video on Dock Ellis and his infamous no-hitter on LSD which leads us to a discussion about players performing while on drugs. Aaron Judge is in San Fransisco this week and reportedly will meet with the Giants. We're breaking down the very scripted video that made its way onto social media of Judge being spotted in a SF hotel. We're also comparing his quotes about free agency to other free agents in baseball. Alek Manoah said Gerrit Cole is the worst cheater in baseball history and we're going down the list of cheaters to see if anyone is worse than Cole. Albert Pujols won Comeback Player of the Year and Jared thinks Mark Appel deserved it. Joey does not. We make some predictions about Perfect Game balls and talk about Jeremy Peña giving out dive thru orders after winning the World Series. Happy Thanksgiving! Episode 104 Mark Appel's journey to the major leagues is one full of disappointment and perseverance. A week after making his major league debut with the Philadelphia Phillies, the former No. 1 overall pick joined Matt and Leslee Holliday on "Table Forty" to talk about his quest to the major leagues that included being drafted in the Top 10 twice, passing up a contract to return to college, dealing with injury after injury, retiring, then getting healthy and making a comeback to major league baseball. At the center of all of his decisions was his faith in God, and it was that same faith that helped him persevere despite countless setbacks, delays, and frustration as he tried to figure out his health and his future. He's finally reached his goal of pitching in the big leagues and he hopes people see Jesus through him.

Owen, Luke, and Parker talk a lot of sports in this episode. They create stats to rank quarterbacks, discuss Mark Appel getting called up to the majors, and play Verb It or Verb It. Also, Parker’s life updates just keep getting bigger.
In this latest Powder Blue Phillies podcast, Geoff Mosher and Frank Klose discuss: Phillies take 3 from 4 from Padres but lose 2021 NL MVP Bryce Harper indefinitely to a broken finger Nick Castellanos heating up with Braves, Cards on deck Bullpen shines as Mark Appel gets his call-up All this and more!

The Astros tossed a combined no-hitter against the Yankees on Saturday. Cristian Javier led the way with seven innings and 13 strikeouts, followed by an inning apiece from Hector Neris and Ryan Pressly. The Astros reminded us that the Yankees World Series push won't come easily. After nine long years since being the #1 overall pick, Mark Appel has been called up to the MLB. Appel has been traded, released, and even quit baseball a few years ago but he finally found his way to the MLB. The bad news in Philadelphia is Bryce Harper has suffered a fractured thumb. All this (and more) on today's episode.
My notes (as of now) for this evening include the coming of Mark Appel, the leaving of Jonathan Villar, Jerad Eickhoff sucks, the June prosperity of Charlie Morton, and the great Jack Suwinski.
Ty Daubert and Nathan Ackerman are joined by Alex Coffey of the Philadelphia Inquirer to discuss the Phillies' losing streak, how much Joe Girardi is to blame and if they have any chance of digging themselves out of the hole they've created.
