Why do technical experts often make poor change leaders? Roger Guerrero, Head of Enterprise Strategy Execution at Merck, challenges how organizations select and develop leaders in transformation environments. Drawing from his experience overseeing Merck's corporate strategy implementation, Roger explains why change leadership shouldn't be confined to specialized teams but embedded as a core expectation for all managers. He argues that companies over-index on technical expertise while undervaluing the ability to inspire and lead through change—creating what he calls a "silent killer" in organizations. Whether you're struggling with resistant middle managers or disconnected executives, Roger offers practical strategies for identifying and developing genuine change leadership beyond technical competence.----Connect with:Nellie WartoftCEO of TigerhallChair of the Executive Council for Leading Change (ECLC)nellie@tigerhall.com ----00.00 - Introduction 01:30 - Why change management shouldn't be limited to specialized teams03:45 - How technical industries often select leaders for technical expertise, not leadership ability05:20 - Why change leadership competencies should be core criteria in promotions07:10 - The problem with the "individual contributor to leader" career path09:15 - Creating dual career tracks for technical experts vs. leadership roles11:30 - How to identify people with natural change leadership abilities14:45 - Addressing the "this isn't my job" mindset in middle managers16:20 - Red flags that indicate poor change leadership potential19:40 - The evolving profile of effective senior leaders—from engineers to MBAs to motivators22:15 - Strategies for working around resistant leaders you can't replace24:30 - Handling resistance at the C-suite level27:15 - The importance of communication style in successful change initiatives29:35 - Why transparency and empathy are critical for change leadership----Breathe by RYGO | https://soundcloud.com/francesco-rigolonEverything You Need Is By Your Side by Vlad Gluschenko |Music promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comCreative Commons / Attribution 3.0 Unported License (CC BY 3.0)https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/deed.en_US

Episode 48 | Enterprise Innovation Meets AI PowerThe Big Themes:Workday's Strengths: Workday is carving a strong niche in HR and financial data management, two areas ripe for innovation through AI. The company has identified talent management, recruiting, and onboarding as key areas where AI can drive efficiency and improve decision-making. This emphasis on HR tech makes Workday attractive to organizations looking to modernize their HR processes.Adoption Challenges: One of the biggest challenges in 2025 for AI in the enterprise software space will be customer adoption. Whether it's overcoming resistance to change, integrating new systems with legacy platforms, or ensuring employees have the necessary skills to use AI effectively, the road to widespread AI adoption can be bumpy. Vendors must provide practical, easy-to-understand use cases that demonstrate AI's value.Oracle's Complex Implementations: Oracle's enterprise solutions are often criticized for their complexity, particularly when it comes to implementation. The flexibility that Oracle provides means customers can tailor solutions to fit their specific needs, but this level of customization often requires substantial technical expertise and time. Oracle's challenge will be to find a balance between maintaining this flexibility and simplifying the implementation process. The Big Quote: “AI has to be able to cross multiple parts in multiple applications to synthesize all that information together. AI makes it easier for these systems to have integration, so to speak, as long as the provisioning is all within the same suite of products . . . For customers, having everything under the SAP umbrella or the Oracle umbrella or the Workday umbrella across multiple lines of business is, in the age of AI, going to be really helpful, because then your agents are able to be that much more effective."
There's no question – AI is top of mind for businesses and governments alike and the focus is shifting from infrastructure to implementation & value derivation. Patrick Moorhead and Daniel Newman were joined by Hewlett Packard Enterprise's President & CEO, Antonio Neri, last week in Davos. In their conversation, Neri emphasizes HPE's commitment to making technology equitable and sustainable, their strategic positioning in AI, and the role of hybrid cloud in AI applications. Description: Nick is joined by Tim Hill, the General Manager of Sustainability Solutions for Nucor Corporation. Nucor is the largest steel producer and recycler in North America. Plus, Nucor produces steel via a larger circular and electricity-powered process; their steel uses recycled scrap and is made in electric arc furnaces (EAF) instead of blast and basic oxygen furnaces (BF/BOF). This makes Nucor not just one of the largest steel producers in the world, but a leader in steel decarbonization. Whereas green steel is often something that's referred to as a future possibility, much greener steel is already available domestically today. In addition to these points, Nick and Tim discuss the following…:Misconceptions about ‘hard to abate': A necessary reframe for the fact that steel is often seen as a ‘hard to abate' sector, given that Nucor already offers steel that In comparison, emits only 0.77* tons of CO2 per ton of steel produced for Scopes 1-3. That's less than one third the GHG intensity of BF-BOF steelmaking (Worldsteel).Additional decarbonization: There are many areas where Nucor can achieve additional emissions reductions along their supply chain, including in sourcing renewable and cleaner power. This is an area where Nucor is leading the market with numerous technological partnerships. Global leadership: How can Nucor's expertise in greener steel manufacturing spread to the rest of the world? There's a lot of work to do to decarbonize steel; Nucor finds itself in a powerful leadership position, not just to export greener steel to markets globally, but to shape and influence how the entire world approaches decarbonization.… and much more!Timestamps:00:02:17 - Guest Introduction: Tim's Career at Nucor00:04:47 - Nucor's Enterprise Strategy and Decarbonization00:05:08 - Common Misconceptions About U.S. Steel Industry00:07:08 - Nucor's Leadership in Steel Recycling00:11:19 - U.S. vs. Global Steel Production Methods00:14:17 - Nucor's CO2 Emissions Compared to Global Averages00:17:06 - History of Nucor's Decarbonization Journey00:21:46 - Market Evolution and Customer Demand00:25:56 - Catalytic Demand for Clean Energy00:28:12 - Decarbonizing Remaining Emissions00:31:05 - Investments in Fusion and Hydrogen Technologies00:34:42 - Policy and Regulatory Frameworks00:38:39 - Opportunities for Nucor in Global Markets00:42:26 - Broader Climate and Energy TopicsLearn more about Nucor and their sustainability efforts here: https://nucor.com/sustainabilityIf you love listening to The Keep Cool Show, please leave me a 5-star review on Rate My Podcast: https://ratethispodcast.com/keepcoolThank you so much.Plus, stay up-to-date on all things Keep Cool here: https://keepcool.co/ and follow Nick on Twitter: https://twitter.com/nickvanosdol and LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nicholasvanosdol/

Steve recently sat for an interview with veteran journalist Julie MacDonald for a feature with The European. For the next two weeks, we'll be presenting that conversation in two parts. In the first part, Julie and Steve discuss the regulatory landscape, improving communication across the business, and how enterprises can successfully marry technology with the human element of work. Key Takeaways: 1. Durbin emphasizes the importance of alignment in creating a culture that supports risk management and growth. 2. MacDonald emphasizes the need for transparency beyond organizational borders, including collaboration with competitors and regulators. 3. Large organizations have resources to keep up with supply chain risks, while midsize and small enterprises struggle. 4. Durbin stresses the need for basic security practices and security awareness training, providing feedback in real-time to help individuals remember what they should have done. Tune in to hear more about: 1. Cybersecurity risks and how businesses can manage them effectively (0:00) 2. Cybersecurity transparency, regulation, and communication (5:13) Standout Quotes: 1. “I think for security people, what they have to be better at is understanding the role that security plays in achieving the business objectives, the business strategy, because if they can do that, then suddenly they have the ear of the business. On the other side, from the business perspective, they need to understand the role that technology plays in achieving what they're trying to do. Because technology equals security equals risk.“ - Steve Durbin 2. “If you look at the way in which now, technology is all pervasive, we use different elements of technology to do our jobs. So we may be doing something on our own mobile phone, for instance, which we wouldn't have been doing before. So the importance of security awareness has actually increased significantly. “ - Steve Durbin Mentioned in this episode: ISF Analyst Insight Podcast Read the transcript of this episode Subscribe to the ISF Podcast wherever you listen to podcasts Connect with us on LinkedIn and Twitter From the Information Security Forum, the leading authority on cyber, information security, and risk management.

So I was able to see how internally, and I leveraged my boss at the time to get there. If you have someone who's not thinking like that, I hate to say it, but you probably need to find somebody different, right?"[00:47:40] "Ultimately, it's about the business, right? We're not buying a Zscaler because it's cool. We're buying it because I've got X, Y, Z from a business strategy to sort out, and you need to add value to that, right? I hate to say it, but maybe you got the wrong person."[00:51:30] "It's not about wasting our time; it's about committing resources to try to solve this problem together. You respect our people, we respect your people and our time. We're not here to waste anyone's time."

The future of the construction industry, more specifically how money flows within construction. In it we cover topics such financial automation from the CFO office right down to the job site, the move from a backwards looking workflow to a real-time and predictive one, as well as the industry tailwinds accelerating overall technology adoption of a $15T segment of the global economy. Bassem Hamdy is founder and CEO of Briq, a next generation financial platform to make construction projects more profitable. Briq, a 150 person tech company out of Santa Barbara, commands a significant share of US construction firms as its customers and now has expanded internationally. The industry uses Briq to gain visibility over the flow of money on a project in order to make better planning decisions and predict profits more confidently. Bassem is a rare breed, he's been in construction software for over two decades, before it was cool and before there was even an industry around it. First seeing the introduction of resource planning software at CMIC (which now handles over $100B in construction revenue each year) to then being EVP of Enterprise Strategy at Procore (a now public company) helping construction transition to the cloud. Today we get to talk about what the next evolution is. He's also one of the very few that can speak construction as authentically as he speaks technology. Subscribe for the latest episodes. From its founding in 1946, ingenuity and innovation have been at the heart of GOJO Industries. At the time, tire and rubber manufacturers in Akron were cleaning their hands with harsh chemicals. So founders Goldie and Jerry Lippman created a one-step, rinse-off hand cleaner as a solution. Purell Hand Sanitizer would follow in 1988. Now in its 75th year, GOJO Industries is the Akron area's largest private employer with more than 2,500 people in the city and in outlying facilities.rnrnGOJO is no stranger to viral surges, but when the COVID pandemic hit in early 2020, scientists and epidemiologists raced to understand the novel virus. Demand for cleaning and sanitizing products surged and GOJO was thrust into the national spotlight. In response, GOJO invested more than $400M in capacity expansion and vertical integration, and more than doubled the number of its locations in Northeast Ohio to meet the unprecedented demand for its products. They prioritized first responders and the healthcare community--all to help to save lives.rnrnCarey Jaros began her relationship with GOJO as a Board Director in 2014. Then in 2016, Carey joined GOJO full-time to lead Innovation, Marketing, and Enterprise Strategy, and shortly thereafter was promoted to Chief Operating Officer, before being named President and CEO in January 2020.rnrnJoin us in-person at the City Club to hear from Carey Jaros on how she successfully led GOJO Industries during the early days of COVID-19 pandemic, staying flexible today, and what's next after 75 years of innovation.
