Simon DeDeo's inquiry takes on the most immense topics: astrophysics, history, epistemology, culture. He brings the precision of a physicist, the capability of a data scientist, and the sensibility of a philosopher to thinking about how we live our lives; and his polymathic life might be the example we need to make sense of the world we are walking into, one requiring an evolution to our way of studying and understanding.Origins Podcast WebsiteFlourishing Commons NewsletterShow Notes:David Spergel (08:40)The Santa Fe Institute (14:10)The Village Vanguard in New York City (16:30)The Applicability of Mathematics as a Philosophical Problem by Mark Steiner (24:30)Murray Gell-Mann (25:00)"The Unreasonable Effectiveness of Mathematics in the Natural Sciences" by Eugene Wigner (26:00)"The civilizing process in London's Old Bailey" Klingenstein et al (27:30)Michael Tomasello (31:50)Michael Palmer "Lies of the Poem" (34:50)Phenomenology of Spirit by Hegel (37:20)Gregory Bateson "Where is the mind?" Complex Regional Pain Syndrome - Can Suffering Bring Gifts? Darci and Mark Steiner's lives turned inside out and upside down when Darci nearly lost her life after a debilitating fall down the stairs in her home. She was later diagnosed with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome and spent six years bedridden with such horrific pain she could not tolerate even a sheet to touch her body. Her husband, Mark, immediately took on the role of caregiver for Darci and all the extra responsibilities of raising their two little girls. In this conversation with Sharon Better, Darci and Mark freely answer questions about their struggle to find a “new normal” when Darci was incapable of caring for their girls or their home. Mark brings the unique perspective of a full-time caregiver and how Mark sometimes struggles with meeting all the needs of their children and his wife. They both share the spiritual challenges of understanding the sovereignty of God over what seem like set backs and unfair loss and how the Lord has met them in their most broken moments. They share their story in Darci's book, Beauty Beyond the Thorns: Discovering Gifts in Suffering. Darci and Mark have both served in ministry, Darci as a teen and women's ministry leader, as well as assisting with church plants in Denver and Los Angeles. Mark has served in full-time ministry in San Francisco and Thailand. In the late 80's Mark helped Cambodian refugees from the Khmer Rouge “killing fields" and the fighting between Cambodian guerillas and the Vietnamese army on the border of Cambodia and Thailand. He is an entrepreneur, along with caring for Darci. Connect with Darci - https://www.darcijsteiner.com/

In episode 128, Mark Steiner gives us a unique companion episode to his wife Darci's episode in the "Healing Series." The theme of the caregiver in the midst of suffering continues to appear, and Mark gives us a transparent look into his experience of caring for (and at times not) for his wife, and how this journey has not only brought them closer together, but closer to God. There is a beautiful invitation Jesus is giving around caregiving, and it may be abundantly more than you imagine. How has God invited you to care for others? Welcome back to the Life on Purpose Podcast! Jordan Brown is joined in studio by Mark Steiner. Mark and his wife Carolyne have a passion for mission work, both abroad and here in our community. Jordan talks with Mark about this passion for missions. They discuss what missions means, what mission work does, and the purpose behind missions. They dive into the joy of sharing Jesus with a lost world and how the Spirit can move you into places that you may not be comfortable in order to accomplish his purposes. We know you will be blessed by today's episode!
We all know life means challenges, but we don't think it's going to happen to us. When Darci fell and developed Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, the Steiner's marriage had to take a different route. It was no longer give and take like in most healthy marriages, it was give and give and give. Learning how to rewalk after two years in bed was real celebration! But then at another celebration, the Steiners daughters wedding, everything came crashing down with a fallen chair. Both the caregiver and care receiver have needs, although the caregiver often goes unnoticed. Mark wrote a chapter in a book Darci just published called Beauty Beyond the Thorns: Discovering Gifts in Suffering. Second Half Myke Hideous is an American gothic rock singer and songwriter from New Jersey. He is the founder and frontman of the East Coast gothic rock band The Empire Hideous, which was active throughout the 1990s and into the early 2000s. He also performed with The Bronx Casket Co., Spy Society 99 and the Misfits as a fill-in vocalist (May–July 1998: South American and European tours). Hideous auditioned for the Misfits' original reformation in 1995, losing out to Michale Graves. The following year, Mark Steiner released a documentary film entitled To Build an Empire, about The Empire Hideous. In 1998, he was hired as a fill-in vocalist for the Misfits when Michale Graves took an indefinite hiatus because he did not want to go on an extensive tour outside the United States. He did vocals at all the group's shows on the Europe and South America tours that summer, but Graves returned to the band later that year after the tour was completed. 2000's After his Misfits experience, Myke Hideous briefly fronted his horror punk side project, Spy Society 99 and The Bronx Casket Co., with whom he recorded the albums “The Bronx Casket Company” (1999) and “Sweet Home Transylvania” (2002, credited as “Spy”). In 2003, Myke released a new studio album, “Say Your Prayers”. Myke felt inspired to resurrect The Empire Hideous shortly after 9/11 when a friend remarked, “if ever there were a time for The Empire Hideous to resurface as America's number one, apocalyptic gothic rock band, now would be that time”. Myke reunited with former guitarist Jeff Austin for the record and it was met positively by fans. In 2009, Myke announced he would be working on his final album and also began collaborating on the documentary “Living the American Nightmare: The Story of a Rockstar”. This documentary features Myke Hideous as the main center-piece, and was loosely based around his 2002 memoir. It included footage of his early concerts, along with interviews from Myke and many musicians who had worked with him over the years. It also included the final interview Peter Steele would give before his death in April 2010. At the beginning of 2011, Myke released his final album of new material, “The Time Has Come”. This record included the cover song “Moving in Stereo” by The Cars as a free download on his website to commemorate the death of his long-time friend Peter Steele (lead vocalist of Type O Negative), as it was one of Steele's favorite songs. Within the next year, Myke also released his Spy Society 99 material for the first time on CD, “Die Punk, Die”, a 12 track album featuring nine songs only previously available on cassette and three new tracks and an album of remixes, “Remixes Through Time”. Some tracks from “Remixes Through Time” were included in the “Living The American Nightmare” documentary. In 2016, Myke Hideous re-released his autobiography entitled King of an Empire to the Shoes of a Misfit. The Memoirs of Myke Hideous. It includes an added chapter, chronicling his professional and personal life from 2002-2013.

Many creatives may reach a point where they realize they want to try something different, that's outside of their current creative career education and experience, but are not sure how to make the leap. In this episode we talk to Mark Steiner founder of the successful startup, GigSalad, an online market place for entertainers of all types to land gigs for various types of events. Mark started off being an Actor, then a Talent Agent, until one day he realized he wanted to combine his talent to form a startup. In the 16 years I've worked with for profit and nonprofit businesses, particularly in radio, media, and the entertainment industry. There are a few key things that make for thriving organizations.I knew from the first conversation I had with Mark Steiner at GigSalad that he had cracked the code too. In this podcast episode we both share our perspectives on what makes growth work for entrepreneurs, small businesses, artists & musicians. We find common ground and a lot of perspective that helps to put the art of Growth Farming to work.Mark Steiner On The DIY Artist Route PodcastPart of what put me on Mark's radar is the platform he created and owns that is a marketplace for both musicians, entertainers, and speakers to land better gigs. Every musician I talk with struggles to figure out how to get booked at better venues and how to make their tour schedules work. GigSalad is one method that musicians, artists, entertainers, and motivational speakers can use to land more gigs. Building your reputation in the process is also what drives growth and success here.I wanted to talk with Mark Steiner because of GigSalad but also because he's an entrepreneur who has illustrated very specific key points to the Growth Farming method. One particular point he's lived out is illustrated about 35 minutes into the podcast where we discuss the difference between being selfish and loving yourself:“If you truly love yourself in the purest sense of the word, that you’re patient with yourself, you’re kind, not rude, you have compassion and love. Then the absolute natural, the absolute natural manifestation of that is love that you give to others. It just oozes out of you. So if you have people who are not expressing love then they’re not loving themselves.”Throughout our conversation you hear a man who has come to terms with life itself, battled his own sense of identity and made some amazing discoveries in the process. We also talk about the idea of the Heart Garden, which is core to Growth Farming as a means of success.Inside each and every one of us is a garden. The fruits that come forth out of our lives (our words, actions and attitudes) come from what we plant inside of us. Mark's success in his business as an artist and entrepreneur illustrate his growth in building the right kind of garden. One of the past DIY Artist Route Podcast guests, Steve Palfreyman, shares a similar ethos. There's a lot here that pertains to emotional intelligence, which is a key point to success for any entrepreneur, business, or organization. It's very much what Mark says here:“I know my strengths and what I’m good at and I follow what comes natural to me, which is emotional intelligence. I’m comfortable there. I can talk about my feelings and other people’s feelings and relationships. I think those are the driving forces to any successful business.”There's a lot of joy that is gleaned from this podcast experience. There's also a lot of wisdom. What does it take for you to really build success over time, cultivate strong relationships with people to open new doors, and see real fruits come forth? Adopt the method and advice that Mark Steiner illustrates in this conversation.More On GigSalad & Growth OpportunitiesOn a side note, I've been using GigSalad as a way to get my name out for more opportunities and the system is well setup. Their support team is a group of fantastic people who are easy to work with and will help you along the way. I really believe in this marketplace, and I'm not being paid to say that. You can get more info on Mark and get signed up for free to use GigSalad here. Putting it all together for your artistry is also illustrated in both
