Doctor Who was first broadcast on the 23rd of November 1963. Both your hosts are fans of the show so we thought we would use the 60th Anniversary of this event to bring you a very special episode where we cover the DC and Fawcett Comics characters called MISTER WHO. You may be aware of the Doctor Fate villain by that name but did you know about the one that was hunted by Bulletman and Bulletgirl? How about the animal killer Mr Who that Green Arrow and Speedy encountered? Or even the Mr Who that caused problems for the Marvel Family? We needed some help with such a huge project so we called upon some fellow Doctor Who fan podcasters to voice the various Mister Whos as well as some other characters. So, a big thank you to our guest voices - Shagg Matthews, Ross Aitken, Brandon Peters, Logan McFarlane and Kenny Smith. Join us to find out Who is Who! The boys dig into the weirdness of the nomenclature of this series' main character, lament the Zachary Levi-aping at points, and generally try to make sense of the Marvel Family in 2023.
This week on The First Run, Chris and Matt say the magic word and return to the world of the Marvel Family! It's Captain Marvel, Mary Marvel, Captain Marvel Jr., or as current copyrights now call them, the Shazam family. It's Shazam: Fury Of The Gods! Zachary Levi and the gang return to face Helen Mirren, Lucy Lui, and current Hollywood It Girl, Rachel Zegler, collectively known as the SISTERS OF ATLAS (supposed to be some reverb) there. Then Guy Ritchie ventures away from his wheelhouse, the British crime thriller, to make a spy caper featuring Jason Statham, Audrey Plaza, and even more stars to stop an arms dealer. But a cool arms dealer. There's the lovingly cultivated rundown of the big releases on Physical Media, featuring the Streaming and Straight to DVD Picks of the Week. Matt and Chris then close out the show by sharing their 5 Favorite DC Comic Stories Desperately In Need Of A Big Screen Adaptation! Today, as we come up on the New Year, I talk about the legacy of Marvel. It is has given us so much and continues to give us more. Marvel is a world where we can find representation, happiness, fictional friends, and a wonderful world to explore. No matter what you do or who you are, the stories and the characters live on in you. What is so beautiful about this universe is that the stories never really end. Because we, all of us, the great big Marvel Family, keep them going. We keep them alive. All of this: All the laughs, all the tears, and all the smiles, began with an idea. An idea brought to life by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Who knew one idea could change the whole world? So today, let's honor Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Joe Sinnott, Steve Ditko, and all the thousands of other creators who gave us this whole wonderful, beautiful multiverse. If they could see the Marvel Universe today, I know in my heart, they'd be so dang proud.

WandaVision is halfway done and this week on the show I address some of the early complaints about the sitcom format. Why this format works and beyond that makes so much sense for the show. Then I give a little background on some of the most prevalent theories on the internet and let you know my thoughts on them. However, before all of that the latest tv, movie, and comic news to get you through the week.

It's my turn again! My lovely girlfriend Mijntje watched David F. Sandberg's Shazam! along with me so I could prove to her that DC Films had a fun, funny, festive Christmas movie in its catalogue. Depressing, my ass. We cover the Fawcett Comics history briefly and without research, profess our love for the Marvel Family as well as the casting director, and talk about Stanley Tucci, for some reason. On this episode's Trailer Time, we compare the Comic-Con First Look to the Bohemian Rhapsody trailer for David Ayer's Suicide Squad! Send in any questions or feedback you want us to discuss! We have our most magical episode yet - BLACK ADAM! What can we learn from this antihero? And we have our most electrifying skit ever - listen now! SHOW NOTES: Intro 2 weeks left to vote on awards show nominees Background (02:39) Black Adam (Teth-Adam) created by Otto Binder and C.C. Beck in The Marvel Family #1 (December 1945) Only made one appearance in original Fawcett comics run - an ancient Egyptian who was given his powers by the wizard Shazam, but became corrupted by them and was banished to a far star - he returned to Earth 5000 years later, and battled the Marvel family, only to be tricked into saying Shazam and instantly aging to death After DC bought Fawcett Comics and began using their characters, he was reintroduced to the larger DC universe, as an adversary of Captain Marvel/Shazam Similar origin story for DC, but buried in a tomb by Shazam until unearthed by an archaeologist named Theo Adam, with whom his spirit bonded (similar to Billy Batson & Shazam) He reformed and joined the Justice Society of America, serving as a darker, anti-heroic counter to most of the other members Became ruler of African nation of Kahndaq (where he was retconned to be from), after deposing the dictator (Atom Smasher killed him) 52/World War Three - Adam’s version of the Marvel Family are all killed, and Adam goes on a rampage that requires the entire Justice Society and other heroes to band together to defeat him - he is left powerless New 52 - rebooted as Adam, whose nephew Aman was given powers by Shazam - Adam was injured, and Aman shared his power with his uncle, who then turned on Aman and killed him - defeated by the Marvel family once again Rebirth - one of the Council of Immortals, and still serving as ruler of Kahndaq Issues (10:00) Unable to take any criticism Incredibly wrathful - if he feels even remotely slighted, he will stop at nothing to punish (18:45) Self-righteousness (28:15) Break (34:18) Plugs for Perfect Package Podcast, Petri Dish, and Cullen Bunn Treatment (35:51) In-universe - Use medication/magical stones to sedate Adam before beginning therapy Out of universe - Focus on making a safe environment, and then address the issues as they arise (39:52) Skit (47:51) Ending (51:23) Recommended reading: JSA: Black Reign Review read: super nerdy, Wonderful! Character Corner - A Podcast on Your favorite Comic Book Characters
Sorry for the delay folks but we're finally back to wrap up *checks notes* Captain Marvel Part 3? Or is this Shazam? Yeah we waste no time in this episode addressing the elephant in the room: What the heck do we call this character? Kriss & Dpalm have varying opinions but one thing that is agreed upon is that this is all DC's fault. They destroyed Fawcett because the "Superman Clone" was more popular than Superman, then tried to resurrect the character 20 years later after the name had already been registered by Marvel. So we're covering the ups and downs of the "Original Captain Marvel". We cover the Whiz Comics years, the DC relaunch, Roy Thomas' interesting yet unfinished attempt at the character, Jerry Ordway's Power of Shazam and the struggle of DC trying to figure out what to do with the character that once outsold Superman Also...one of you asked for this so Dpalm also does a quick explanation of Marvelman. Just know it involves Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman and Grant Morrison. Buckle in folks. You're in for a ride. Issues: Early Fawcett Years: Whiz Comics #2 - First appearance of Billy Batson/Captain Marvel, Shazam (the Wizard) and Dr. Sivana Captain Marvel Adventures #18 - First Appearance of Mary Bromfield/Batson Whiz Comics #25 - First Appearance of Freddy Freeman Master Comics #21 - First Appearance of Captain Nazi Captain Marvel Adventures #26 - First Appearance of Mister Mind The Marvel Family #1 - First Appearance of Black Adam Shazam! More than the overrated and underrated of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, why does Marvel resonate so much with audiences? Can they even make a bad movie? And Zoomar explores what still brings people into the theater and if the comic book franchises can support the quantity of movies per year that the studios think they can.

Black Adam is such an interesting character because while a lot of what he does is wrong, the motives are something you can understand. Complexity like this makes a villain good. When you can make a character that slaughters an entire country of 2 million people sympathetic in a way, you're doing something right. Remember last week when we said that episode 17 was the greatest thing to happen to the Internet EVER? Well, frankly... we lied!! Because THIS EPISODE IS THE GREATEST THING TO HAPPEN TO THE INTERNET EVER!!!! Mwwwwaahahahahahahaha!!! Scott and Mike kick things off with e-mails and there is more talk of the JSA on the TV, which includes more on what problems Scott has with the BRAVE AND THE BOLD, a discussion on what sport produces the best athletes (hint: there are skates and a lot of fighting and no, the guys don't talk about Tonya Harding!), and a few minutes on whether or not Earth-2 should come back!! Also, Mike challenges Scott to a no-holds barred, over the top, best of the best, roadhouse style debate on Guy Gardner! Finally, a listener brings up the geek elitism topic again and Mike is reduced to tears! Actually that doesn't really happen, but it's still a darn good e-mail at any rate.* Then the guys jump into ALL-STAR COMICS #72, which sees the JSA fighting the deadly Thorn! Commentary on this rather good issue includes, among other things, the wonky artwork, Flash's inappropriate behavior at the group meeting, the Huntress being one of those obnoxious new people at work that ten seconds after being on the job starts trying to tell everyone what's what, an odd tangent on Dick Grayson's fighting ability, and whether or not Jay Garrick dyes his hair. And BECAUSE YOU DEMANDED IT!! -- Mike and Scott cover the ads! And what awesome, awesome ads they are. Ads for a Star Wars club. Ads for cool looking comics. Ads that show how dysfunctional the Marvel Family was. Also the fantastic DAILY PLANET page with more ASK THE ANSWER MAN questions! And of course... the Hostess ad. Sadly, Scott and Mike have to actually work hard to point out the messed up things in this ad because oddly enough it actually makes sense!! Well... mostly. However, this one more than makes up for that... * Note: Mike does the editing on this show, so the thirty minutes of Mike sobbing like a five year old whose blanket was taken away has "mysteriously" disappeared. Take that however you want to. NOTE -- The Two True Freaks! now have a phone line where you can call and leave a completely inappropriate message - We just might use it on the show! It's 585-COP-LURE!!
