In today's episode, we're talking about responding to the pain in our hearts and around the world when we turn on the news and see yet another horrific tragedy, like the recent shootings in Buffalo, New York and Uvalde, Texas. How do we keep our hearts open? How do we allow ourselves to lament, and meet our grief and rage, all while continuing to tend to the mundane tasks of our daily lives? How do we know whether we are doing enough to show up for the world in all its pain?  We bring the words and lessons of many teachers into today's episode to help guide us as we wrestle with these questions alongside you: teachers in the form of rabbis and civil rights activists, Buddhists and climate justice writers, mindful skaters and hospital chaplains. We are grateful for their guidance and contributions, and we are grateful for you.    References: Words from Martin Luther King Jr: “The arc of the moral universe is long but it bends towards justice.” “I must confess, I am tired.”; Letter from a Birmingham Jail  Jewish wisdom: "You are not obligated to finish the work of perfecting the world, but neither are you free to desist from it." Transitioning from fossil fuels to clean energy has been a hot issue for activists, communities, and the people most affected by the climate crisis. While actions like mountain top removal pollute the air, water, and food in neighborhoods surrounding the Appellation region in West Virginia and Kentucky, 68% of Black Americans also reside near coal fire power plants in their communities, making this an issue that affects us all. Rev Yearwood speaks with Mary Anne Hitt, the Senior Director of Climate Imperative at Energy Innovation. They share their ideas and thoughts on introducing the green energy transition to communities while creating equity in these areas for the people. Mary Anne also spent 12 years with the Sierra Club and describes its growth and understanding of racial justice as the center of the climate movement and launching campaigns to end fossil fuels with grassroots organizers. Welcome to the first episode of our new Race To Zero series! With COP26 as the vital milestone for climate action in November 2021, the promises and pledges made by governments must be converted into meaningful action beginning today. We know the EU, the UK and many other countries have net zero pledges but can they achieve them without a global collective effort?  And it’s not just up to governments - history has shown that political actors need the real economy to place wind in their sails. So with everything on the line and the clock ticking, the Race to Zero has no separation between winners and losers, and failure is NOT an option. Joined this week by Rt Hon Alok Sharma MP, President-Designate of COP26, Patricia Espinosa, Executive Secretary of UNFCCC, Mary Anne Hitt, National Director of Campaigns for The Sierra Club, and Nigel Topping, High Level Climate Action Champion for COP26, we get a first hand look at what is at stake, who is stepping up, and how everyone can join the race to a better future. And we’ll find out why COP26 is not just a 2 week event in November, but a race that has already begun.   —   Guests this week   Alok Sharma Rt Hon Alok Sharma MP, COP President Designate Twitter | Instagram   Patricia Espinosa Title: Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC Twitter   Mary Anne Hitt National Director of Campaigns, Sierra Club Twitter | Instagram | LinkedIn   Nigel Topping  High Level Climate Action Champion for COP26 Twitter | LinkedIn | Instagram    —   UNFCCC Twitter | Instagram   Race to Zero Twitter | LinkedIn   Sierra Club Twitter | Instagram   COP26 - UN Climate Change Conference Twitter | Instagram | LinkedIn — Keep up with Christiana Figueres here: Instagram | Twitter  — Tom Rivett-Carnac: Instagram | Twitter | LinkedIn — Paul Dickinson is on LinkedIn! As wildfires blaze along the West Coast, extreme weather devastates the Gulf Coast and Midwest, and temperatures rise to record levels, a majority of registered voters in the United States say that climate change will be an important issue in the 2020 presidential election. Bloomberg Philanthropies has been working with the Sierra Club to phase out coal power in favor of cleaner, healthier forms of energy. Through our work on the Beyond Coal campaign, we’ve helped retire 60% of domestic coal plants, and are on track to retire 100% of the nation’s coal plants by 2030. Beyond Coal estimates that these plant closures have saved an estimated 7,600 lives, prevented nearly 12,000 heart attacks, and resulted in an estimated annual savings of $3.6 billion in health care costs. Beyond Coal has been named one of the most successful environmental campaigns in the country, and has inspired the launch of grassroots campaigns in Europe, Korea, Japan, and Australia. On this episode, Antha Williams – global head of Climate & Environment programs at Bloomberg Philanthropies – sits down with Mary Anne Hitt, the Sierra Club’s National Director of Campaigns, and Reverend Yearwood, the President and CEO of Hip Hop Caucus. Together, they discuss the impact of retiring coal plants and transitioning to clean energy, how climate justice and racial justice are connected, and why it’s important to vote for candidates who believe in climate change in the upcoming election.

The headwinds for coal are coming from every direction. Since 2010, More than 250 coal plants in America have been shuttered, or are set to close. Meanwhile, in the most energy-hungry regions of the world, thousands of megawatts of new coal plants have been halted. This week, we’re covering the struggles of coal from a few different angles. First, the steady drumbeat of plant closures in the U.S. What has caused them, and what comes next? We’ll talk about the just-announced closure of the Navajo Generating Station -- the biggest coal plant in the West -- and why it encompasses all the complicated factors around the transition away from coal. Then, a clean coal redux. As billions of dollars in cost overruns mount at America’s first commercial carbon-capture plant, the coal industry looks to the White House for more support. And finally, the international picture. Coal is still the dominant source of generation around the world, but new build-outs are slowing in key countries. Can we say that peak coal has arrived? Our guest co-host this week is Mary Anne Hitt, the director of the Sierra Club's Beyond Coal Campaign. She also co-hosts a climate podcast called No Place Like Home. In September of 2007 the International Forum on Globalization held a Teach in Washington DC on climate change, peak oil and global resource depletion & extinction. Several Panel meetings addressed the many false solutions to the climate crisis that may be accelerating the danger rather than alleviating it. Coal for example is now promoted as a substitute for oil and promises for the capture of the carbon are made that are not yet possible with current technologies and may never be available on a large scale. Dr. Hermann Ott is head of the Berlin office of the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy. He is the co-author of the book: The Kyoto Protocol International Climate Policy for the 21st Century. From the Appalachian mountains came Mary Anne Hitt. She lives and works at the center of one of the large unreported ecological tragedies of out time. In surface mines, some the size of New York’s Manhattan, whole mountain ranges are blown off to strip mine the coal. Mary Anne Hitt is Executive Director of Appalachian Voices. Go to their web site at and to a sister web site . There you can see aerial photos of the Appalachian mines and photos of the forests, streams and mountains before they were demolished. Mary Anne Hitt and Dr. Hermann Ott were recorded at the Confronting the Global Triple Crisis teach in, organized by the International Forum on Globalization, in Washington DC in September 15, 2007. The teach in was recorded by Conference Recording Services in Berkeley, California.
