What does the term "microplastics" mean to you? Why is seemingly everyone talking about them lately? A new study published on March 6th in the New England Journal of Medicine titled, “Microplastics and Nanoplastics in Atheromas and Cardiovascular Events" has been circulating around the internet, and raises concerns about the risk of exposure to microplastics and long-term adverse health outcomes. What does this study suggest? What does the other data about microplastics show? Our exposure to plastics is ubiquitous; its in our packaging, our clothing, in our air and water. The chemical additives used in plastics manufacturing are also worrisome, as they have demonstrated adverse health effects in animal models. As we have hammered home in many prior episodes, DOSE and EXPOSURE matter when it comes to risk of harm from a particular substance. The same rules seem to apply for microplastics. In today's episode, Jeremy explains what we do and don't know about the risks of long term exposure to microplastics. He ends with some actionable items on how you can choose to limit your exposure with some simple daily behavioral changes. Resources for this episode include: The very recent NEJM article titled "Microplastics and Nanoplastics in Atheromas and Cardiovascular Events". A 2022 Frontiers in Endocrinology study regarding endocrine changes in mammals related to exposure to micro/nano plastics. A May 2023 article from National Geographic titled "Microplastics are in our bodies. How much do they harm us?" A March 19th, 2024 Everyday Health article on microplastics. Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s career began in 1985 as an attorney for the environmental nonprofit RiverKeeper. He became one of the most influential environmentalists in the United States, receiving TIME Magazine's "Hero of the Planet” and the Sartisky Peace Award.Son of Senator Robert F. Kennedy and the nephew of President John F. Kennedy, Bobby Jr. was a lifelong Democrat but became increasingly estranged from the party in the 2010s as it drifted away from its traditional values. He made his final break on October 9, 2023, when he announced his candidacy as an independent for President of the United States. Bobby has spent nearly 40 years fighting corrupt corporations and government agencies. During his tenure at RiverKeeper, he successfully sued dozens of municipalities to force compliance with the Clean Water Act. He won cases against corporate giants too, including a suit against General Electric for toxic runoff from its corporate jet hangar and a court order against ExxonMobil mandating they clean up tens of millions of gallons of spilled oil in Brooklyn, NY. Building on the success of the local Riverkeeper model, Bobby co-founded the WaterKeeper Alliance and served as its President for 21 years. Under his direction, it became the world's largest nonprofit devoted to clean water and now protects 2.7 million miles of waterways with over a million volunteers in the United States and 46 other countries. Bobby's work has emphasized protection of local communities in their battle against corporate and government polluters. Some of his most noteworthy victories include: Beginning in 1985, Kennedy helped the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) establish an international program for environmental, energy and human rights. On behalf of this program he assisted indigenous people in Canada and Latin America protecting their homelands and wilderness areas from unwanted large-scale extractive energy projects. Bobby Kennedy was an early and vocal critic of President Bush's decision to invade Iraq and the US enhanced interrogation program at Guantanamo Bay and around the world. He has also been a devoted supporter of union rights, going on hunger strike with United Farm Workers and serving as a pall-bearer during the funeral of Cesar Chavez. Bobby has consistently argued that those who work hard in the United States should be able to afford a good life. Bobby's activism around toxic pollution led him to lobby successfully for the removal of mercury from most childhood vaccinations in the United States. The pharmaceutical megacorporations are by far the most heavily fined and criminally prosecuted companies in America, yet also some of the most powerful. His nonprofit, Children's Health Defense, has long been a key crusader against the corruption of this industry and its influence in government. Bobby is an avid outdoorsman, master falconer and white water kayaker. He has authored a dozen books on subjects ranging from environmental protection to American history and public life, including children's books on the lives of St Francis of Asisi and Robert Smalls. In October 2011, Bobby founded EcoWatch, a leading environmental news site, and was an editor of Indian Country Today, North America's largest Indigenous newspaper. Bobby is the proud father of seven children and grandpa to two grandkids.
What is the point of Lenten fasting for Catholics? The practice has come to be so intertwined with wellness culture that if you do an internet search for “fasting,” you're likely to get a lot of advice associated with dieting and weight loss. While there are legitimate fasting practices that can help people become more physically healthy, much of the discourse around wellness and weight is potentially harmful, associated with eating disorders and a fatphobic approach to the person. And losing weight or getting physically fit is not exactly what Lenten fasting is supposed to be about. Even within the religious and spiritual realm, there's a lot of confusion on this topic. Some people talk about sacrifice, others about mortifying the flesh. Some of these conversations veer dangerously close to certain theological ideas about human nature as fundamentally depraved, or the body as essentially shameful. These ideas are neither Catholic nor psychologically healthy. So what is Lenten fasting supposed to be about? Theologian LaRyssa Herrington joins hosts Emily Sanna and Rebecca Bratten Weiss on this episode of the podcast to help clarify the meaning and tradition of fasting in Catholic culture. Herrington is a doctoral student in systematic theology and liturgical studies at the University of Notre Dame. Her current areas of research include the role of Mary in devotional and popular piety, womanist theology, ritual studies, and sacramental theology. The toxic chemicals used to treat clothing remain on the fabric, even after washing. Chemicals such as formaldehyde, stain blockers, flame retardants, and more are endocrine disruptors. These can penetrate the skin and lead to serious health conditions. Exposure to these chemicals, often used in fast fashion, is shown to cause multiple abnormalities in the reproductive system of women, even in minimal doses.(1) Clothing is one of the most significant environmental problems, along with housing, transportation, and food. Not only that, but many manufacturers don't pay factory workers a living wage. What's the answer? Learn to be ethically fashionable for your health, the sake of the environment, and for humanity. The more you know, the less you need.Yvon Chouinard What is Ethical Fashion? Throughout the full life cycle of a garment, from manufacturing to disposal, making choices that are responsible towards the environment, people, and animals. Using textiles created in a responsible and conscious way. Materials, dyes, labor, and even buy back programs are part of sustainable and ethical fashion. Are ethical, sustainable, and slow fashion all the same? Technically, most of us mean the same thing when we talk about these terms. However, each of us may hold different ethics. In the end, slow fashion is a movement meant to provide better quality products that consumers are able to hold onto longer, thus slowing the need for disposal. Slow fashion may include limited items as well as made to order clothing. Sustainable fashion is entirely based on a more environmentally and socially conscious production. Overall, the combined goal is similar. Fast fashion is sold in high volume with a pretty low profit margin, for example a popular example is Shein. Workers being underpaid and overworked along with dumping untreated waste into local waterways. Many clothing manufacturers such as Shein and others may say they're working on sustainablity, but the proof is not forthcoming. Supply chain transparency, fabrics, and waste management are three big areas to look at when deciding if a company is ethical or sustainable. Options for Being Ethically Fashionable The fashion industry has a detrimental impact on the environment - in fact, according to EcoWatch, Fast Fashion is the Second Dirtiest Industry in the World. It is up to you, the consumer, to vote with your dollars. To make it easier, suggestions are listed below to help you get started becoming ethically fashionable. All of these recommendations may not suit your lifestyle. One or two of them will be enough to help you stay stylish and make ethical clothing purchases. Purchase second-hand clothing Undoubtedly, the most economical way to be ethically fashionable it to purchase clothing second hand. Second hand purchases reduce carbon emissions, save lots of resources, water, and energy. When you buy clothing from a second-hand shop, you are making a sustainable purchase. Every time you buy used clothing you are keeping one more item out of the landfill. Your purchase also keeps local thrifts shop in business and your dollar going back into your local community. Win-win. You can make your ethical purchases even more effective when you shop for sustainable clothing brands at a second-hand shop! Being budget-friendly and ethical are two of the main reasons why I buy more and more of our clothing from second-hand shops. Speaking of buying locally Local clothing shops and boutiques are another good way to make an ethical choice in clothing. When you shop at a local boutique, you can ask where they clothing came from, see the quality and support your local business owners. If you still prefer to purchase your clothing brand-new, consider taking your items to a second-hand or consignment shop so that they will be reused and kept out of the landfill. You can be ethically fashionable by donating your gently used quality cl...

In this week's episode, ‘Ropa Americana', we're tackling fast fashion on the move. Chile's Atacama desert has become a fashion graveyard for the world's unwanted clothes. Every year, nearly 59,000 tons of clothing arrive in Chile's Iquique port from Europe, Asia, and the United States. Some of it is redistributed and sold throughout Chile, but the vast majority remains in Atacama. Santiago-based circular economy expert Marcela Godoy shares the hard truth behind the underbelly of fast fashion and how plastic clothing is destroying the driest desert in the world. Resources: You can learn more about what's happening in Atacama on Al Jazeera, BBC News, and EcoWatch. To follow Marcela's work, check out ADC Circular and StgSlow. The apparel industry is the second-largest polluter in the world (second only to oil) and contributes 10% of global carbon emissions. For a deeper understanding of the fast fashion industry, plastic pollution, and its impact on the planet, visit Changing Markets Foundation Fossil Fashion Series and Eureka Recycling's Best Practices for Textile Collection. As Marcela mentioned on the show, an organization called Desierto Vestido (Desert Dress) conducted an assessment of the brands found in Atacama - including H&M, Old Navy, and Adidas. You can watch the action on Instagram. Over 1,000 listeners and still counting have placed their trust in People over Plastic's fearless coverage since we launched in October 2021. Green Gab Podcast – Green Homes, Green Living and Green Companies
What does it mean to buy green? There are no standard definitions for the words used to describe green products, so we sometimes tend to confuse products that sound green or claim to be green with those that truly are sustainable and environmentally friendly. Some companies intentionally use words like natural or eco-friendly as a marketing ploy to imply that their products are better for you and the environment than they may actually be. That is known as greenwashing. Unfortunately, many companies that greenwash their products spend a lot more time and money on marketing than on becoming more sustainable and ecologically friendly. I am Marla, the Green Home Coach. Today, I am pulling a podcast out of the archives in which Tony Pratte, my regular co-host, and I dive into the concept of greenwashing. In our conversation, we explain what you can do get above and beyond greenwashing, take action, and do better. We focus on green labels for the home and explain how they can work for you. Green labels for the home cover everything from energy efficiency to water efficiency to resource efficiency to toxin-free products and recycled materials. Stay tuned for more! Green Guides Greenwashing has been going on for a couple of decades now. Lately, people have been getting more concerned about it. Due to the current uncertainty surrounding the environmental and eco-friendly claims that companies have been making, the Federal Trade Commission has created green guides to help ensure that marketing claims regarding the environmental attributes of products are substantiated and truthful. Wise up to greenwashing We all need to wise up to greenwashing and realize that we vote with our dollars. Many of us base our purchasing decisions on the performance, sustainability, and culture of the companies we buy from. So we are usually willing to pay a moderate premium for products made by people and companies authentically committed to being better environmental and health stewards. Green labels A lot of research goes into figuring out if products are what they claim to be. Green labels prove that research has been done on products by a green label-certified independent third party. Green labels give us guidelines to ensure that the products we buy will protect us, our families, and our fellow human beings. If the third party did not exist, anyone would be able to do or say whatever they wanted about any product. Green labels give us the peace of mind that comes from knowing we are using something better. Greenwashing The term greenwashing got coined about ten years ago. It gets used when someone thinks or hopes, rather than knows, that a product is green. It is nothing more than marketing hype or the misdirection of consumers because, although something gets claimed to be good for the environment, in reality, that may or may not be so. The FCC and greenwashing The FCC (Federal Communications Commission) has put out rules about what you may say and claims you may make about a product. There is also a standard code of ethics for marketers, and the American Marketing Association has specific rules that forbid marketers from making any unsubstantiated claims. Using 'green' terms Many people- even those in the home-building industry, do not understand fully what green terms mean. Nor do they understand their value. And they often do not even know how to use the terms correctly. So they tend to throw them around loosely, without understanding the consequences or the ramifications that are sure to follow. For example, a home that has Energy Star-certified, energy-efficient windows cannot be described as an energy-efficient home simply because it has an energy-efficient feature in it. No real meaning Some terms have no real meaning to the FCC, like natural, which is often used to describe food and personal care products. Specific rules There are some specific rules for using the word 'organic' to describe products. The goal of green labels Green labels exist to give people something tangible, and reliable parameters around a particular characteristic. They help us to understand more about what we are buying. Having peace-of-mind around energy-efficiency Lately, many companies are doing things that are more sustainably-minded. There are multiple levels on which we can choose to engage with the companies that are doing things better. Guidelines Green labels give us all the necessary guidelines to ensure that we are doing something impactful that will protect our families, ourselves, and fellow human beings without doing all the research. Everyday Green Home Shop To help you, I have started putting a lot of products in my Everyday Green Home shop that have green labels. For the products that do not have green labels, I go through the vetting process I learned from the Green Building Standard to ensure that they meet the requirements needed for a Green Home Certification. For the personal care products in my shop, I refer to the Environmental Working Group. Taking small steps You can green your entire home, taking one small step at a time. Some steps to take in that direction are: Energy Star - It covers 1000s of quality products including complete home certification. Choose these products when you decide to upgrade or change anything electrical in your home. Water Sense - It covers, for water, much the same as Energy Star does for energy. Choose these products when it is time to upgrade or replace your washing machine, dishwasher, faucets, showerheads, or plumbing fixtures. Green Guard - This certification tells you that a product, usually for woodwork or cleaning, has fewer toxins in it, and it meets California's requirements for air quality. Start taking control of the quality of the air you let into the house. Cradle To Cradle is a new energy-saving concept for both products and processes. It is an efficient way to use resources. How green labels apply in other parts of our life and for homes The US Green Building Council has LEED (Leadership, Energy, and Environmental Design). It is available for homes. There is also the National Green Building Standard, the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), and local and regional green building standards, like Green Build Texas, Green Build Washington, and Earthcraft Homes in the South-East. There are also energy-efficient only certifications, like Energy Star, for homes and new homes. Home Energy Ratings Score (HERS) is a home energy ratings score index or a scale of energy efficiency which assesses the energy usage and relates it to an existing home. Sustainability is about more than just the products Sustainability is about society and living standards. It is about how people get treated and the wages they are paid. This is a segment of episode #290 of Last Born In The Wilderness “Systemic Failures: Rolling Blackouts, Decline, & Fragmented Realities w/ Richard Heinberg.” Listen to the full episode: http://bit.ly/LBWheinberg2 Learn more about Richard and read Museletter: https://richardheinberg.com Richard Heinberg, Senior Fellow-in-Residence of the Post Carbon Institute, returns to the podcast to discuss the massive power outages several regions of the United States, in particular Texas, have experienced over several weeks in February, leaving millions of people without electric power and potable water. He explains the increasingly precarious situation we find ourselves in as fossil fuel energy production meets numerous intersecting crises, including, but not limited to: an aging and outdated energy grid, abrupt climate disruption-related weather events, rapidly depleting cheap fossil fuel reserves, and the fracturing of consensus reality. We discuss the viability and, in his view, the necessity of undertaking the massive shifts needed to address these mounting problems with more sustainable energy production and distribution models. We touch on his recent essay ‘2020: The Year Consensus Reality Fractured,’ and address the potent observations he has had over the last year about the direction the United States is going, as well as our ability at this time to coherently address the numerous issues Richard elaborates on in this interview. “Is the fracturing of consensus reality a symptom of societal decline due to other factors (such as economic crisis or limits to vital resources), or is it an independent variable, capable of causing collapse by itself? In my view, the former is more likely the case: if a society is doing well economically, it is usually able to resolve occasional cognitive contradictions over time. A polarizing demagogue (like Joseph McCarthy or George Wallace) may appear, but the status quo eventually reasserts itself. However, if a society is experiencing an economic, political, or social emergency, consensus breakdown may contribute to a self-reinforcing process of collapse.” (http://bit.ly/3qvsvWu) Richard Heinberg is regarded as one of the world’s foremost advocates for a shift away from our current reliance on fossil fuels. [Intro: 13:14] Richard Heinberg, Senior Fellow-in-Residence of the Post Carbon Institute, returns to the podcast to discuss the massive power outages several regions of the United States, in particular Texas, have experienced over several weeks in February, leaving millions of people without electric power and potable water. In addressing this subject, I ask Richard to discuss his thoughts on Jeff Gibbs' and Michael Moore's documentary film Planet of the Humans, which he was featured in. And finally, in light of all this, we touch on his recent essay ‘2020: The Year Consensus Reality Fractured,’ and address the potent observations he has had over the last year about the direction the United States is going, as well as our ability at this time to coherently address the numerous issues Richard elaborates on in this interview. President Joe Biden was just elected and has already been taking environmental action, but what does this mean? This episode is a brief overview for our young listeners on recent policy, bias and why it matters, how policy is affecting Indigenous peoples, how the Keystone XL pipeline production has stopped and has been invalidated but is yet to be shut down, and more. It can be hard to talk about these topics, but it is important to know what is going on so that we can better advocate for a better and safer Earth. Freddie Mercury, Waylon Jennings, Gene Simmons, Joan Jett, Dolly Parton, Todd Rundgren, Alice Cooper, Rod Stewart, Meatloaf: that's just an abbreviated list of the music legends that Anastasia Pantsios has photographed over the last 50 years. We talk about growing up in the middle of Chicago's redlining (five blocks from Michelle Obama), witnessing segregation in action, Cleveland's porn days, a white woman's take on Blaxploitation, and growing up when women were given three choices out of college: marry, teach, or grad school. Then we share stories about how Anastasia became a rock photographer, the most scandalous situations she witnessed, why she was always the consummate professional, how Linda McCartney gave female photographers a bad rap, and my almost-groupie moment with Samantha Fox. This week we cover the first summer blockbuster movie-- "Jaws" and it's 3 sequels. "Jaws" put director Stephen Steven Spielberg on the map and won 3 Academy awards-- Best Original Score (for composer John Williams), Best Sound and Best Film Editing. It was also nominated for Best Picture. The movie holds up surprisingly well for being 45 years old. And for this week's recipe, you might think I'd go with shark fin soup. That'd be a BIG nope. Sharks have been hunted almost to extinction with one of the main reasons being for their fins. See this article on EcoWatch that reviews recent US legislation to prohibit the sale/use of shark fins. Instead I'm going with a recipe from the Martha Vineyards Magazine for tasty scampi with calamari. See details Here Music Credit: Here Photo Credit: Here

Isn't this a Space Podcast? Why are you Talking About Parachutes? Great question! Parachutes have a wide variety of applications when is comes to space craft. Besides, they're also just cool! Note: The sound at the beginning is a little echoy. It improved throughout the episode. We are still adjusting to remote podcasting, but it will be all fixed next episode! The age of climate crisis is upon us, and grief and anxiety are on the rise. Our pilot episode introduces the emotional burden of climate change, and why despair leaves so many people unable to respond to this existential threat. Stefanie Spear, a 30-year advocate for the environment and the Founder of EcoWatch, takes her own maiden voyage as a sailor from Panama City to the Galapagos Islands on an all-women crew to move the needle on single-use plastics. (Read the full article on The Outdoor Journal). This month, eco-activist Stefanie Spear will be joining the crew of eXXpedition, an all-women crew sailing around the world to raise awareness about the devastating tole that single-use plastics take on our environment as well as on human biology, especially for women. Onboard the eXXpedition, she'll conduct scientific studies on the concentration and global distribution of microplastics in the ocean. The world's oceans hold an estimated 5,250 billion pieces of plastic, and these particles make their way into our system and pose harmful health effects. Like me, Stefanie was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. She is the Founder and former CEO of EcoWatch, and she continues to lead a charge for change against the climate crisis. In this episode, Stefanie discusses how she developed her passion for environmental advocacy, the media's role in reporting the immediacy of the climate crisis, her citizen science efforts onboard the eXXpedition sailboat and how they could lead to solutions in plastic waste disposal, and how you can get involved with the charge for change today. For more stories like this, visit The Outdoor Journal. If you'd like to go on your own adventure to the Galapagos, book your trip on OutdoorVoyage.com.The Best of Galapagos AdventureGalapagos Multisport Adventure

I originally was planning on covering one toxic component of herbicides – glyphosate – which is a key ingredient in Roundup and other herbicides commonly used in agriculture and gardening. But as I was doing my research it became apparent that the contaminants in the herbicides may be even more problematic. That is the formulation of the herbicide matters just as much as whether or not it has glyphosate. In this episode, I’m covering some of the different components of herbicide and then I’ll show you how easy it is to avoid this at the grocery store and in your garden. Episode highlights How to reduce exposure Buy organic. Look for in-season foods and keep an eye out for sales! You can also look for lower cost animal proteins (like ground meat) and do a meatless monday to save a bit extra. If you tolerate beans, buying in bulk is a great option! Just be sure to soak overnight and rinse before cooking. Try to keep away from super processed foods like pre-made meals even if they’re organic as they can be a higher cost than cooking from scratch and can still have additives and preservatives that aren’t conducive to your optimum health. Instead of using herbicides in the garden, consider spraying weeds with a vinegar and water mixture. You can pour boiling water on weeds growing in cracks in your walkways to kill those as well. Of course, always consider pulling. If you feel overwhelmed, hiring some some help for the weekend to pull weeds so you can get caught up is always nice. Note that bees will thank you for not using chemicals. I also love an article by Ecowatch that has 12 ways to get rid of weeds without using roundup. Finally, how do you help your body detox from Glyphosate? Humic and fulvic acids – These are minerals found in soil that can help improve detoxification and restore nutrient deficiencies in the body through improving digestion. Zeobind – This is a natural zeolite. This works much like charcoal through binding to toxins and removing accumulation. Probiotics that are capable a fully metabolizing glyphosate – Primarily acetobacter, which is found in apple cider vinegar and sauerkraut. Spore probiotics – Megaspore specifically supplies bacteria beneficial to glyphosate detoxification. Restore – Restore is a supplement that uses carbon-based redox molecules from soil to help restore communication between mitochondria, cells, and bacteria. This is specifically used for glyphosate detoxification Resources: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3945755/ http://www.autismsupportnetwork.com/news/mit-doctor-claims-autism-afflict-50-american-children-2025-glyphosate-blame-2523533#ixzz60Zbr8hcl https://www.corebrainjournal.com/2019/04/307-glyphosate-toxins-mind-science-autism-cancer-seneff-2/ https://www.sophiahi.com/the-truth-about-mitochondria/

Mary has reveled in an artistic life, performing harp, dressing sets for NY film productions, and now using public art and writing to mobilize for climate action. A National Endowment for the Arts grant recipient, Mary may be the first harpist to perform in both The Cathedral of St. John the Divine, where she worked with composer John Cage, and the subway stop under Bloomingdales. As a student leader, she sang along with Pete Seeger during the 10-day apartheid divestment sit-in at Columbia University. Mary later studied at Eastman School of Music and University of Oregon’s School of Music and performed widely, including solo appearances at major music festivals. She toured the original interactive musical “The Incredible Earth Circus” in schools and was commissioned to write six children’s plays, three of which are still regularly performed. In 1996, Mary began to write about conscious parenting in an era of rapid global transformation. She uses several forms–social commentary, essays, interviews, reporting, and interactive art–to advocate for a healthy, just, and fun world. Her writing has appeared in The Sun, EcoWatch, Common Dreams, Mothering.com, Spirituality & Health, Oregon Quarterly, The Oregonian, The Folk Harp Journal, and ISLE (Interdisciplinary Studies in Literature and Environment)a quarterly journal published by Oxford University Press. Mary co-founded Eugene’s chapter of the international climate action group 350.orgwhere, as Creative Director, she specializes in collaborating with families and young people. On the home front, Mary is grateful to be married to a physicist/math instructor who can, among other fine things, help the teens survive Algebra. http://www.marydemocker.com/
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I have just found a few solid studies that have detected substantial amounts of the active ingredient of roundup and our food supply. So once again, I'm having the talk about how important it is for us to lead the way by example and avoid Monsanto products. A chemist from the FDA was quoted in an email as saying that he found detectable amounts of roundup in his children's granola cereal. You can read about glyphosate in granola and crackers in this article. Glyphosate isn't the only active Ingredient in roundup. Another study (that is discussed here) compared glyphosate alone to roundup and found that the roundup formulation caused cancer more frequently than glyphosate alone. This article in Ecowatch describes a landmark case where a gentleman by the name of Dwayne Johnson is suing Monsanto, arguing that roundup caused his non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Dwayne Johnson had worked on properties in California spraying roundup on school grounds.
Friday 18th May 2018. On tomorrows show something different – one story, arguably one of the biggest EV stories of the week – and one guest from the company behind it. I’ll tell you more at the end of this show. And before we get started, just a note it’s the London Motor Show 2018 this week with everything from the Tesla Shooting Brake you might have seen which comes from my native Norfolk, to the brand new iconic electric Black Cab, to the world’s first production EV kit car the e-rod. You can search for the hashtag #LMS2018 if you’re interested in seeing more. 1000S OF SUPERCHARGERS ARE IN PERMITTING/CONSTRUCTION PHASES First up we'll dive straight into InsideEVs and Elon has been busy on the build again. This time is it Model 3? No! Model S or X? No! SpaceX? No! Tesla Energy, something about the Solar roof? No! The latest in a long line of positive announcements is about the Supercharger network. Already a huge incentive to get into the Tesla walled garden, he now says an updated Supercharger map is coming in the next few days. Responding to a question from new Model S owner Kevin Mitnick on Twitter about any superchargers coming to Woodland Hills, Elon replied: "Yeah, there are thousands of Supercharger locations going through permitting/construction, including that area. Will publish an updated map in the next few days." So what does "thousands" mean? At the basic level, it means 2,000 or more. And I presume he's talking Worldwide because there are many in the planning and permits stage even here in the UK. Oh and another reason this is the top story today, and it's got something to do with that 'walled garden' I mentioned. I wouldn’t be surprised to see another auto maker to cave in and pay Tesla for access, especially a smaller, more boutique brand without the means to build their own network. For now Tesla is burning cash and doing whatever it required to build out the network, whilst the Superchargers are never going to be used as a profit centre of Tesla owners. However, let me remind you of something from the earning call when he took questions from the blogger Galileo, who is a fan of Tesla having an exclusive club of chargers which others can’t access, as that makes them more valuable to investors. Elon said that he can see a time in the future when it's opened up to other manufacturers, indeed Tesla has even offered, but nobody was ready to be their customers just yet. And you can understand why, with huge auto makers wanting to do it their way, on their terms. However I can see a time when at least one major car maker in the medium term calls it quits on their own tech and licences EV technology from Tesla. Given Elon's mission is not to stop until all vehicles are electric, and also looking for new revenue streams, why wouldn't someone like Ford decide the best way to avoid total collapse is to licence the drivetrains from Tesla? ELECTRIC BUS FLEETS Earlier this week the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SF Muni) Board of Directors passed a resolution to begin procuring zero emission battery buses to replace electric hybrid vehicles by 2025, with a goal of achieving a 100 percent electric bus fleet by 2035" reports EcoWatch. Meanwhile, in South Korea, the government wants all buses and trucks to run with zero emissions by 2030. Electrive says: "The new plan released by the government also wants to introduce small electric two-wheelers for postal deliveries by 2020. Around the same time Seoul will also start to mass-produce and supply hydrogen and electric buses in earnest." And let me put both of those wonderful targets in perspective with a tweet from Colin McKerracher, Head of Advanced Transport, Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF). In 2018, "Shenzhen: May 1st: all new commercial light duty trucks = EVs. From July 1: Only EVs allowed in ride hailing. By Dec 31: replace all remaining taxis with EVs. Build 5,200 EV chargers for taxis. Retire 20,000 diesel light duty trucks. City policies will reshape auto markets." RECORD EV SALES FOR SOUTH KOREA Well let's stay in South Korea for a bit longer. "The number of electric vehicles sold in South Korea so far this year is already more than double the sales recorded for the whole of last year. According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, electric vehicle sales rose from five-thousand-900 units in 2016 to 13-thousand-800 last year. It says more than 30-thousand EVs have been sold in South Korea since the turn of 2018, including preorders" according to some insight from KBS World. BMW UNVEIL SHAPE OF iNEXT Yesterday at the annual shareholders meeting for BMW in Germany they presented their vision for the iNext EV. The iNext is designed to be a technology showcase for BMW: electric propulsion, full self-driving, and advanced interfaces, said BMW CEO Harald Krueger. According to Green Car Reports: "It is supposed to be available with three different battery sizes: a 60 kilowatt-hour battery with 280 miles of range, a 90-kwh battery good for about 342 miles, and a range-topping 120-kwh battery with 435 miles of range. That last figure is longer than most gasoline cars." These types are things are never really about the car, but more about what they think they will focus on. So they say it will have Level 3 self-driving, equipped for Level 4, advanced gesture control. BMW HAS SOME PRODUCTION TIPS FOR TESLA As Tesla struggles to meet the mahoosive demand for Model 3's I'm sure what will really help is BMW chipping in with some advice. And it's this: "embrace human labor, be flexible and focus on the details." At that same annual meeting, Oliver Zipse from BMW said: "“Producing cars in cycles of 60 seconds: That is the deciding factor" BMW makes Tesla’s entire 2017 output once every two weeks. “To fully automate the assembly process is not our goal, because the human being with its unique properties is unbeatably flexible.” “Maybe there’s more leeway in the top-end market segment above 100,000 euros ($118,000), but as soon as you enter market segments with volumes like the 3- or even in the 5-Series, keeping costs under control is paramount,” BMW’s Zipse said. “You can’t allow yourself to have inefficiencies there.” EAST COAST STATES UNITE TO ADVANCE EV CHARGING States on the East Coast of the US, from Virginia to Maine, have announced support for the release of the ‘Northeast Corridor Regional Strategy for Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure’ to advance public and private investments in EV charging" according to Renewable Energy Magazine: "As part of a legal settlement between the federal government and Volkswagen addressing Clean Air Act violation claims, the Northeast Corridor states, from Virginia to Maine, have up to $108 million that may be invested on charging and hydrogen fuelling infrastructure for electric cars. Electrify America, a Volkswagen subsidiary, is investing $2 billion to promote electric vehicles, which will include substantial infrastructure investments in the Northeast Corridor." I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Saturday 31st March 2018. TESLA ISSUE MODEL S RECALL There’s a new Fully Charged video out with Johhny Smith at the Geneva Motor Show and one of the things which struck me was when, sitting in the Model 3, he said Tesla has done an amazing job for such a new company. And it was a reality check that at a motor show dominated by the heritage names who’ve been making cars for a long time – and of course a few newcomers like Rimac. And that leads onto the Tesla recall announced this weekend, and it’s quite a big one. Affects 123,000 Model S built before April 2016, half of all. Follows seat belt recall in 2015 In the week 14% was wiped off company values and debt rating downgraded. Calcium and magnesium salts to keep snow off roads can corrode power steering bolts Tesla say: “We have observed excessive corrosion in the power steering bolts, though only in very cold climates, particularly those that frequently use calcium or magnesium road salts, rather than sodium chloride (table salt). Nonetheless, Tesla plans to replace all early Model S power steering bolts in all climates worldwide to account for the possibility that the vehicle may later be used in a highly corrosive environment. If the bolts fail, the driver is still able to steer the car, but increased force is required due to loss or reduction of power assist. This primarily makes the car harder to drive at low speeds and for parallel parking, but does not materially affect control at high speed, where only small steering wheel force is needed. NISSAN LEAF 30KWH BATTERY Nissan have responded to an InsideEVs study into battery degradation. The summary was: ““At two years of age, the mean rate of decline of SoH of 30 kWh Leafs was 9.9% per annum. This was around three times the rate of decline of 24 kWh Leafs which at two years averaged 3.1% per annum”. Nissan EV communication manager, Jeff Wandell, offered this response: “Nissan is aware that a limited number of customers have expressed concerns with the previous generation of the Nissan LEAF 30-kWh battery.” “LEAF owners are some of our most devoted customers. “We take their concerns seriously, and have technical experts currently investigating the issues raised.” The report continues: If the high rate of decline in battery capacity that we observed in the first 2.3 years of a 30kWh Leaf ’s lifetime were to continue, the financial and environmental benefits of this model may be significantly eroded. Despite 30 kWh Leafs accounting for only 14% of all light battery electric vehicles registered for use on New Zealand roads at the end of February 2018, there is also the potential for the relatively poor performance of this specific model to undermine electric vehicle uptake more generally unless remedies can be found.” HIGH TECHNOLOGY IN PHEV AVIATOR The Lincoln Aviator was seen this week in New York and it’s their first PHEV SUV and it’s packed with the kind of tech expected of a car like that, a bit like the recent Touareg launch. Ford have gone all out on the tech including “Phone As Key” technology. Just like Tesla with the Model 3 it’s a sign of the way things are heading, with only your mobile phone needed to unlock sand drive your car. Top Speed says: “Once the hardware and software needs have been addressed, owners can use the app to lock and unlock the luxury SUV, open its trunk, and most importantly, start the Aviator and drive away with it. In times where a car owner can’t be bothered to drive the car himself, he can send temporary codes to others, who are then required to input them into the app to receive the same menu of functions. That said, the codes are “temporary,” which means that they will eventually time out as another code is generated by the app. EPA GIVE ADVANTAGE TO CHINA Finally you can’t have an interest in electric cars without also having an awareness that the sexiest cars might come from America or Europe, but the really big sales are happening in China, as they rapidly electrify. There are whole cities now where every single bus – in the tens of thousands – is electric. It just never makes the headlines as much as whether Tesla made 200 or 300 Model 3s a week. EcoWatch write: “Congress has preserved the ability of California to set its own tailpipe standards—an authority the state has exercised since before the EPA was created in 1970. Other states may opt-in. In the case of California's greenhouse gas standards for cars and trucks, 13 states have decided to do so, creating a combined market pull of approximately 30 percent of the nation's annual new passenger car and truck sales. The world can then follow. This "California effect" occurs as jurisdictions within and outside of the U.S. trade up to more stringent emissions standards to achieve their benefits and simplify compliance. China's recently adopted goals for plug-in vehicles overtake California's program by requiring an aggressive deployment of plug-in vehicles beginning in 2019 with a target of 7 million new plug-in cars sold per year by 2025. The Chinese government is even openly discussing the appropriate date to discontinue sales of internal combustion engine vehicles within China. As Daimler teams with a Chinese partner to invest $2 billion in a manufacturing plant in China, Chinese automaker Geely has accumulated nearly 10 percent of Daimler's stock reportedly in a bid to secure its electric and autonomous vehicle technology. SHOW NOTES: onairwithella.com/104/ Welcome to the third installment of this new weekly feature where I share one thing that I'm loving, one thing I'm not, and one simple, SUPER easy, clean-eating recipe. You can find the first one here, and last week's right here. the GOOD: Wellness Mama website Katie is the "Wellness Mama" - one of my favorite go-to resources for all things natural living and wellness-related. the BAD: Teflon and Non-Stick Cookware Teflon sucks. Read my full rant about this toxic household product: "Can Cookware be Toxic?" Want more info? Here's the experts' take: EWG's "The Dangers of Teflon" How toxic is Teflon? Salon's expose "Teflon's Toxic Partner" And, this damning article from EcoWatch called "DuPont Knew For Decades..." So, what are your options? See what I use here Or, shop Amazon for Le Creuset or Xtrema products What if you have no choice? Maybe you're visiting friends or spending a week in a vacation home. Here are some tips for when you are stuck with the nonstick cookware as your only option: Don't preheat - heat at the lowest temperature possible to cook your food safely. Don't put nonstick cookware in an oven hotter than 400 degrees. Use an exhaust fan over the stove. Keep pet birds out of the kitchen -- the fumes from an overheated pan can kill a bird in seconds. For real. Read the article! Did you know? Skip the self-cleaning function on your oven. It cleans by heating to high temperatures, which can release toxic fumes from non-stick interior oven parts. the YUMMY: Almost Oatmeal by Paleo Plan You Need: 1 ½ cup organic applesauce, unsweetened - yes, you can make your own, too! 4 tbsp raw almond butter, chunky 2 tbsp canned coconut milk, full fat, unsweetened 1 tsp cinnamon (or to taste) 1 tsp nutmeg Directions: Combine all ingredients in a small pan over medium heat, stirring often until all is thoroughly combined and warm. Try it topped with pears, bananas, fresh or dried berries, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, grated apples, or sliced almonds, and serve it with sausage or eggs for a truly satisfying morning meal. See the original recipe here, and a TON of other simple recipes from Paleo Plan. What do you think about this week's choices? Please share your feedback with me.

Anastasia Pantsios published a fantastic article at EcoWatch about Ohio's shameful role at the forefront of the fracking industry. The article is based in part on the U.S. Government Accountability Office report, Drinking Water: Characterization of Injected Fluids Associated with Oil and Gas Production (also known as GAO-14-957R) that examined the fracking industry in seven states. The good news is that the report documents the horrific conditions now present in Ohio due to the booming fracking industry. The bad news is that there is 0 chance that the politicians in Ohio will do anything about this issue. Why is that? Because the American Legislative Exchange Council has helped the oil and gas industry pass laws in Ohio that will need repealed before any action can be taken. One law in Ohio classified solution injected into the Earth as a 'trade secret', so no one knows exactly what is seeping into the groundwater. [Click to Listen]
