Seventeen-year-old Linda Singh was homeless and working at a pretzel stand in a suburban Baltimore mall when she met a National Guard recruiter. That conversation led to a 38-year Army career, culminating in her role as the first female and African American Adjutant General of the Maryland National Guard. Hosts LTG (Ret.) Leslie C. Smith and SMA (Ret.) Dan Dailey sit down with MG (Ret.) Singh to discuss how she overcame a number of obstacles in her youth, including sexual assault, to become the leader she is, the lessons and highlights of her Army career, and to learn a thing or two about Maryland in the process.   Guest: MG (Ret.) The incoming Trump Administration 2.0 is starting to take shape. And as expected, it's a Democrat's worst nightmare. President-elect Donald Trump is expected to name Stephen Miller, an immigration hardliner with white nationalist views, to be his deputy chief of staff. He also officially announced his picks for ‘border czar,' EPA director and U.N. ambassador, all of them in line with his repeated promise to appoint loyalists that will help him bend the government to his whims. Zack Beauchamp, senior correspondent for Vox and author of the book “The Reactionary Spirit,” explains what Trump's picks mean for the continual functioning of our democracy. And in headlines: President Biden's lead adviser for international climate policy shared strong words about Trump at an annual U.N. climate change conference, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris made their first joint appearance since the election at a Veterans Day event, and abolitionist Harriet Tubman was posthumously awarded the rank of one-star Brigadier General in the Maryland National Guard.Show Notes:Check out Zac's reporting – www.vox.com/authors/zack-beauchampSubscribe to the What A Day Newsletter – https://tinyurl.com/3kk4nyz8What A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcastFollow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/crookedmedia/For a transcript of this episode, please visit crooked.com/whataday

160 Years Later: Harriet Tubman Posthumously Recognized As General

In a powerful tribute this Veterans Day, Maryland officially recognized Harriet Tubman for her remarkable contributions during the Civil War, commissioning her as a Brigadier General in the Maryland National Guard this past Monday. The momentous occasion highlights Tubman not only as a leader of the Underground Railroad but a courageous operative for the Union. Born Araminta Ross, Tubman's journey from enslavement to freedom fighter is legendary. After escaping to Philadelphia, she returned to the Eastern Shore multiple times to rescue family and friends. During the war, she served as a nurse, scout, and leader, notably orchestrating a mission that liberated over 700 enslaved individuals along the Combahee River. At the commissioning ceremony near her birthplace, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore praised Tubman as a pioneer of the phrase "leave no one behind," emphasizing her unwavering commitment to freedom and justice. Despite her longstanding contributions, Tubman was only recognized as a veteran. This posthumous promotion corrects this oversight, celebrating a woman who has inspired generations. This week, we have a special show about how people interact with wildlife and other animals. Our first story looks at what happens when urban and suburban deer populations get out of hand. Some cities and towns opt for bow hunting or bring in sharpshooters. But one community went another way: sterilizing female deer. Plus, a new book looks animals that can be classified as post-natural - those living things that have been intentionally altered by people, through domestication, selective breeding and genetic engineering. We have news about a bill passed by the Pennsylvania Senate that would let energy companies bypass state agencies when securing a permit to build. Critics say the move would violate federal and state laws. The Maryland National Guard dropped plans to fly fighter jets just 100 feet above the ground in an area known as the Pennsylvania Wilds.

Flagwix specializes in providing the best Maryland flag you can own at any time. The flag of Maryland is a historical symbol representing the journey towards unification of the state. During the Civil War, pro-South Marylanders opted for red and white, colors associated with the Crossland family. However, after the war, a new flag was designed to symbolize the unity of the citizens of Maryland. The Maryland flag consists of the colors of Calvert and Crossland alternating in quadrants. The flag was first recognized in 1888 when it was used by the Maryland National Guard troops, and then officially adopted by the Fifth Regiment the following year. In 1904, the national flag was raised to symbolize unity and reconciliation. The Maryland flag, still proud today, represents the state's rich history and unyielding strength. This flag serves as a symbol of the nation, honoring the original ideals and at the same time evoking the difficult efforts to maintain the country's unity. It represents victory over challenges and restoring loyalty. The Maryland flag acts as a banner of harmony and unity, bringing all the inhabitants of the area together. For those that may not have heard our prior interviews, the last interview as about a year ago and we have many new listeners since then, tell us in your own words, “Who is Ken Rupert?” Before we get into the five nuggets of wisdom that I want to ask you about, how did you get started in the “Black Belt Financial System” that you’ve perfected? These are definitely trying times right now. I remember you talking about how someone has to take steps to prepare for unprecedented times on our prior interviews. Has that type of preparation helped you in the day and time we find ourselves now? I remember last time, you shared how each family needs to have three major accounts. A checking account, a savings account and a separate emergency account. Can you briefly go over that information again for our listeners? I believe some people will be able to better relate to what you were talking about now than they could before. 3 major accounts: Checking worth 1.5 times your expenses Savings worth 1.5 times the VALUE of your monthly expenses (not a cash flow account – use it as a buffer). Emergency Account equal to your annual gross income! This will allow you to actually go about 24 months to withstand any financial impact (layoff, etc.). Because you will cut expenses, of course? Let’s talk about these “Five Nuggets of Wisdom” that you are sharing and teaching your clients. What is Nugget #1? You cannot produce gold without digging below the surface. The explanation is obvious – but how does that apply to people and their finances today? They say the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, but the second-best time is today. I believe the services you offer will benefit someone – even though it may not help them today…I believe everything we have seen happen has convinced people to take some type of action for the future. On April 12, 2015, Freddie Carlos Gray, Jr., a 25-year-old black man, was arrested by the Baltimore Police Department for possessing what the police alleged was an illegal knife under Baltimore law. While being transported in a police van, Gray fell into a coma and was taken to a trauma center. Gray died on April 19, 2015; his death was ascribed to injuries to his spinal cord On April 21, 2015, pending an investigation of the incident, six Baltimore police officers were suspended with pay. The circumstances of the injuries were initially unclear; eyewitness accounts suggested that the officers involved used unnecessary force against Gray during the arrest—a claim denied by all officers involved. Commissioner Anthony W. Batts reported that, contrary to department policy,[6] the officers did not secure him inside the van while driving to the police station; this policy had been put into effect six days prior to Gray's arrest, following review of other transport-related injuries sustained during police custody in the city, and elsewhere in the country during the preceding years. The medical investigation found that Gray had sustained the injuries while in transport. The medical examiner's office concluded that Gray's death could not be ruled an accident, and was instead a homicide, because officers failed to follow safety procedures "through acts of omission." On May 1, 2015, the Baltimore City State's Attorney, Marilyn Mosby, announced her office had filed charges against six police officers after the medical examiner's report ruled Gray's death a homicide. The prosecutors stated that they had probable cause to file criminal charges against the six police officers who were believed to be involved in his death. The officer driving the van was charged with second-degree "depraved-heart" murder for his indifference to the considerable risk that Gray might be killed, and others were charged with crimes ranging from manslaughter to illegal arrest. On May 21, a grand jury indicted the officers on most of the original charges filed by Mosby with the exception of the charges of illegal imprisonment and false arrest, and added charges of reckless endangerment to all the officers involved. Gray's hospitalization and subsequent death resulted in an ongoing series of protests. On April 25, 2015, a major protest in downtown Baltimore turned violent, resulting in 34 arrests and injuries to 15 police officers After Gray's funeral on April 27, civil disorder intensified with looting and burning of local businesses and a CVS drug store, culminating with a state of emergency declaration by Governor Larry Hogan, Maryland National Guard deployment to Baltimore, and the establishment of a curfew. On May 3, the National Guard started withdrawing from Baltimore, and the night curfew on the city was lifted. In September 2015, it was decided that there would be separate trials for the accused. The trial against Officer William Porter ended in mistrial. Officers Nero, Goodson, and Rice were found not guilty at trial. The remaining charges against the officers were dropped on July 27, 2016. On September 12, 2017, the U.S. Department of Justice announced it would not bring federal charges against the six Baltimore police officers involved in the arrest and in-custody death of Freddie Gray. However, it was announced on October 5, 2017 that non-criminal, internal disciplinary trials for the officers will be prosecuted by a three person-panel chaired by someone from another Maryland police agency, likely Prince George's County, and that outside lawyer and former chair of the Baltimore City School Board Neil Duke will serve on the panel as well. At long last, the interview with author and game designer, Joe Balkoski. He's been on my podcast before, when we talked about The Korean War. At that time we made plans for his return when I dove into D-Day games. Besides designing some notable games on the subject, Joe has had an entire second career (his main career, really) of writing books on the subject. It's no exaggeration to say he is the definitive expert on US 29th Infantry Division and it's actions on Omaha Beach and beyond into Normandy, the rest of France, and Europe. I had the opportunity to interview Joe, and this time it wasn't at the end of a Skype line. This time I was able to meet him at his workplace, the home of the Maryland National Guard at Baltimore's Fifth Regiment Armory. It's right there on 29th Division Street in downtown Baltimore, and you'll hear what a fortuitous role it played in Joe's life. With this episode, I'm wrapping up my drawn-out series on D-Day. After the Balkoski interview I talk about some battle games played that were "beyond the beachhead," covering the Battle of Mortain. As well as a few titles that don't have anything to do with D-Day at all: they're in here because my trip to Maryland/Virginia included some local sightseeing and inspired the play of these other games. I've had a little more time to think about what makes or breaks a good, short, small wargame. I'll share my thoughts, and would especially welcome any discussion on that subject. I think in my previous episode I toyed with the idea of stopping my podcasts. I no longer think I'm going to do that. Although future Wargames To Go episodes may no longer follow the multi-episode format for a "quarter" (or so) per topic, I'll still do something. I'm still figuring out what. Right now I know I want to play a couple different Long Range Desert Group games I've acquired. Both are solitaire titles. Then it's high time I learned some basics about the Eastern Front, and what better time to try that than in winter. Maybe I want to squeeze a Bulge game in around Christmas, too. Hmmm... -Mark   If you're not a Twitter user (or don't follow me), but still want to see my photos and short videos about some wargames, just go to http://www.twitter.com/WargamesToGo. Feedback is always welcome.
