Each year, Philadelphia schools struggle to fill around 2,000 vacancies, and fewer people are pursuing teaching as a career. How do we incentivize more people to become teachers and solve this crisis? Elevate 215 and around 30 other organizations came together to form the Philadelphia Citywide Talent Coalition to study that question. Executive Director Dr. Stacy Holland joins Racquel Williams to talk about what Philadelphia schools need to thrive, plus how federal cuts to the Department of Education could trickle down locally. If you're interested in becoming a teacher, you can learn what opportunities are available at teachphl.org. Then, on Shara in the City, we're walking the red carpet as Racquel joins Shara Dae Howard for the UNCF annual Philadelphia Mayor's Masked Ball - the organization's signature fundraiser to help support students through college, and one of the biggest, most glamorous parties in Philly. Take a peek at a night of lavish fantasy in Venice: the city's masked carnival ball. Il Ballo del Doge (Doge's Ball) attracts visitors from around the world who want to dress up in stunning costumes and enjoy top-class entertainment. It's the most sumptuous event of the Venice Carnival. Guests in elegant 18th-century costumes are ready to party at the Doge's Ball. Performers in towering wigs entertain the crowds. And even the guests dress up for the night, all decked out in elaborate costumes. “This is the third time I've come back because it's a fantastic event, it's absolutely one of the most beautiful events I've ever been to and in my opinion, it makes the Carnival in Venice an unforgettable and fantastic thing. I find it fantastic in every detail,” says Adriana Mele, who is from Naples. Others have traveled even further to be here. “It's magical. My godmother came because she saw this on the news in America and decided we were coming,” says Julia Pishko from Colorado. Organized by costume designer Antonia Sautter, the Doge's Ball is a festive all-night masquerade ball attended by guests in extravagant tailored period costumes and wearing typical Venetian masks. “The Doge's Ball is a dream, it's a dream where time is suspended, where you can find a little bit of yourself wearing a costume and living your own fairytale,” explains Sautter. With a different theme each year, the party does not come cheap. Guests spend between 800 and 5,000 euros to attend a gala dinner and be entertained by various shows and a fantasy movie set. This year, the title is ‘Carnival Obsession.' Sautter's first ball took place 30 years ago in 1994. The Venetian decided to go beyond her job as a costume designer and create a ball that would attract people from all over the world eager to realize their dreams. She wanted the event to promote Venetian arts, culture, and traditions. Sautter works with a staff of around 400 throughout the year to create a show that draws on Italian and Venetian traditions, such as opera and the use of commedia dell‘arte characters, and involves around 100 international performers. Don John the melancholic. “Merry” and “melancholy” as two of the play's many opposites. His attempt to cause mischief by telling Claudio that, in the masked ball in the first part of Act 2, Don Pedro woos Hero for himself rather than for the sake of Claudio. Meanwhile, Beatrice wounds the disguised Benedick by telling him that no one respects Benedick because he is too “merry,” always joking and frivolous. Much ado about “noting,” i.e., about taking note of: a comedy of gossip, rumor, deliberate lies spread both innocently and malevolently, a play with a new relevance in the age of social media. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/michael-dolzani/support
Gustav III was shot, in the back and at close range, at Stockholm's Royal Opera House on 16th March, 1792. But he didn't die for another two weeks. Which made things rather difficult for the conspirators who had assassinated him. During his two decades on the throne, Sweden's ‘Culture King' had increased religious freedom, widened opportunities for ordinary citizens and built the very opera house in which he was attacked. But his popularity with the people did not spare him the wrath of the nobility - quite the reverse. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain how, at a masked ball, the King was still so readily identifiable; ask whether his war with Russia was a clever or foolish piece of military strategy; and reveal the ugly fate that befell his assailant… Further Reading: • ‘That Fatal Shot — by the Royal Armoury, Sweden' (Google Arts & Culture): https://artsandculture.google.com/story/that-fatal-shot-the-royal-armoury-sweden/MQURevye_fzGJQ?hl=en • ‘Gustav III of Sweden: The Forgotten Despot of the Age of Enlightenment' (History Today, 2003): https://www.historytoday.com/archive/gustav-iii-sweden-forgotten-despot-age-enlightenment • ‘The Ambitious Building Projects of Gustav III' (Kings And Things, 2017): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5MbLbv2gSU #1800s #Sweden #Crime #Royals ‘Why am I hearing a rerun?' Synopsis On today's date in 1994, at Orchestra Hall in Chicago, the Chicago Symphony and conductor Daniel Barenboim gave the world premiere performance of Partita by the American composer Elliott Carter, specially commissioned in honor of the composer's 85th birthday. It was a major work, and a major occasion – but, as the Chicago Tribune's music critic John von Rheim put it, that date “will forever be known as the Night the Lights Went Out on Elliott Carter.” Just as the orchestra was playing the final pages of Carter's complex score, the house lights went out. The audience gasped. The orchestra stopped playing. Not sure what to do, the audience started applauding. Then, after a moment or two the lights came back on. After breathing a sigh of relief, Barenboim and the orchestra prepared to pick up where they had left off – and then the lights went out again! Turning to the audience, Barenboim quipped, "It's a good thing we and Mr. Carter are not superstitious." Well, eventually the lights came back on – and stayed on, enabling the Orchestra to finish the premiere of Carter's Partita. But, perhaps as a kind of insurance policy – later on Barenboim and the Chicago Symphony also made a live recording of the new work. You know, there's something very important that we need to do as soon as possible. F...ilmshake. Right before we ring in 2023, we're ringing every masked ounce out of Stanley Kubrick's 1999 swansong, Eyes Wide Shut. No dream is ever just a dream, but is this movie a masterpiece, or is every touch of perceived meticulous genius just a meticulous aesthetic choice made solely for the sake of aesthetics? Also, we're talking 1993's BMX Bandits, where a teenaged Nicole Kidman rides around with some bicycle blokes to fight crime. Hang your stockings by the chimney, roast some chestnuts on that open fire, and prepare yourself for a very special Twisted Christmas installment. Our annual yuletide derangement has morphed into a Geek Challenge, featuring two obviously similar films: Paul has challenged Arlo to Michael Curtiz's holly jolly classic White Christmas (1954), and in turn Arlo has thrust upon Paul Stanley Kubrick's festive psychosexual nightmare Eyes Wide Shut (1999). Paul has some harsh words for Kubrick's orgy, Arlo cringes at old-timey patriotism, and both of our boys come away filled with a little less Christmas cheer. Oh, and who is Danny Kaye again? Denise Bryson arrives in Twin Peaks in Episode 19 along with genuine lore about the Lodges and your host John looks into the origins of both of them. Then it's time to ask if we're watching a new timeline, or which characters could be in a wonderful dream and which are in terrible nightmares. How is Denise's portrayal handled? Is Nadine living her best life? Should Little Nicky maybe get a therapist instead of Dick and Andy? How much in common do Josie and Evelyn have? Masks, both literal and figurative, abound in Verdi's Un Ballo in Maschera, “A Masked Ball.” Conspirators feign support of a leader they despise. A noblewoman must veil both her face and her feelings from her husband. The governor must put on a disguise to understand his subjects, and his beloved. The governor's chief councilor dons a mask to take murderous revenge on him for an imagined betrayal. Even the setting itself, colonial Boston, is a thin disguise for the original setting, Sweden under Gustav III. Hosted by Pat and guest co-host Michael Severance, long-serving bassoonist and contrabassoonist with the San Francisco Opera Orchestra.

Windom Earle is still lurking in the shadows of a chess board, Hank is somehow higher in the food chain than Ben now, Josie's backstory is developed, we learn more about the White Lodge (and its shadow, the Black Lodge), and just to add to all that narrative chaos, someone comes “back” from the dead. Un ballo in maschera (A Masked Ball) is an 1859 opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi. The text, by Antonio Somma, was based on Eugène Scribe's libretto for Daniel Auber's 1833 five act opera, Gustave III, ou Le bal masqué.The plot concerns the assassination in 1792 of King Gustav III of Sweden who was shot, as the result of a political conspiracy, while attending a masked ball, dying of his wounds thirteen days later.Purchase the music (without talk) at:http://www.classicalsavings.com/store/p1380/Verdi%3A_A_Masked_Ball.htmlYour purchase helps to support our show! In Season 2 Episodes 10 & 11, "Dispute Between Brothers" and "Masked Ball," there's still so many Twins to Peak. Like James finally taking his own advice and leaving. Or Mayor Milford getting married (again). Oh, and who can forget the introduction of the DEA's top agent Denise Bryson? See, there's so much of this wonderful show left to discuss! Next week, we're continuing on with the next two episodes: "The Black Widow" and "Checkmate."
Howdy, valued listeners! Welcome to our new regular post day, Thursday, a loving nod to the Peaks' regular night back in the day. Here's our hot take on the cold fish that is Season 2, Episode 11, “Masked Ball”—and we even found a few things to like! We're cockeyed optimists like that. Jonathan covers what's not working in this episode; Damon highlights characters haunted by their pasts; Jennifer shines a light on what did work; and Colin uses these doldrums to think about supernatural TV. In the Twist, we start to examine the show's treatment of the character Denise Bryson (David Duchovny).LISTEN: Apple Podcasts | Google Podcasts | BuzzSprout | Spotify | RSS | and more!S2, E11 NOTES: Duwayne Dunham (episode director) Barry Pullman (episode writer) Dan O'Herlihy (1919-2005, Andrew Packard) Tony Jay (1933-2006, Dougie Milford) James Marshall (b. 1967, James Hurley) Wendy Robie (b. 1953, Nadine Hurley) Annette McCarthy (b. 1958, Evelyn Marsh) John Boylan (1912-1994, Mayor Dwayne Milford) Luke Perry (1966-2019, Beverly Hills 90210's Dylan McKay)Cousin Oliver Syndrome (television trope of adding a precocious child actor, sometimes considered a subset of Jumping the Shark) Charlotte Stewart (b. 1941, Betty Briggs) David Duchovny (b. 1960, Agent Denise Bryson) The X-Files (1993-2002, Fox TV series, starring David Duchovny, featuring sci-fi themes) Kolchak: The Night Stalker (1974-75, ABC TV series with supernatural themes) Darren McGavin (1922-2006, beloved American actor) Dark Shadows (1966-71, ABC TV series, gothic soap opera) The Twilight Zone (1959-64, CBS TV series focusing on the supernatural) Dr. Who (1963-89, 2005-present, BBC TV series) Tom Baker (b. 1934, English actor known for, among other things, portraying The Fourth Doctor) “Meglos” (1980, 4-part episode of the BBC's Dr. Who) Cisgender (also “cis”; gender identity descriptor where one identifies with their sex assigned at birth)Complete notes at our website: BackToTheDoubleR.com!
The investigation draws to a close. This week, we're covering Season 2 Episode 9, "Arbitrary Law." Catherine reveals her ruse to Ben, James embraces nihilism, Coop's ring is returned, and Leland confesses. Next week, we're watching the following two episodes, "Dispute Between Brothers" and "Masked Ball." Where will the show go from here? Who knows!
A funeral and a wedding.
The three original hosts sit down to discuss the first two episodes of what they call "The Drought" of season 2.

Politics has affected the arts since the beginning of musical understanding. Both Verdi and Mozart had run-ins with censors and politicians. Verdi's Masked Ball being a prime example. But the NEA in this country, part of Lyndon Johnson's Great Society has been attacked repeatedly by republican politicians who, I guess, could not understand, nor appreciate, music, art, theater and opera enough to want to help struggling artists and arts organizations . The Met's Klinghoffer, banning travel by Paul Robeson, and the fight against reading programs for the blind are prime examples of what they would de-fund. Trump may be the worst, trying to ban all funding for the NEA over the past three years. This makes me angry!
It's a SPOOOOooOOOKY episode this time. It's October in Twin Peaks, and it's gonna be scaaAAAAaary. The Unplugged Professor reacts to the marriage of Dougie, the budding romance of Nadine, and the beginning of the beautiful James and Evelyn arc.
Join Agents AJ, Karen and Tom as they discuss two episodes a week as they continue their rewatch of Twin Peaks leading up to the premiere of the revival on May 21st. Tonight's episodes 11 & 12; Masked Ball and The Black Widow
As we move on from the Laura Palmer storyline, much like Garland Briggs, we go into the wilderness. As Hawk tells us this week, every soul must pass through the Black Lodge on their way to the White, and so we at Damn Good Podcast pass into the darkness of season two's horrible flabby middle.... The Who Killed Laura Podcast Ep 18 - It's a good color for him Welcome back to another Who Killed Laura Podcast with Chris and Scott. This episode of Twin Peaks, entitled “Masked Ball”, was directed by Dwayne Dunham. Looking at his body of work, one has to wonder which of these acting greats was more fulfilling to direct: James Marshall or Kevin Sorbo? After the Log Lady intro sets up what will be a sort of chess game between Agent Cooper and nemesis Windom Earle, we get some stylistic deviations/additions this episode, including some rockabilly music for James Hurley, as he embarks on a solo adventure away from Twin Peaks township that is very noir in nature, just with more wood and wool sweaters. Evelyn Marsh is a sophisticated femme fatale who nonetheless has to sip martinis at a roadside tavern named Wallie's Hideout, and it just so happens she needs a mechanic to fix her husband's expensive old car, and her desire to escape her life coincides nicely with James'. Nadine Hurley's mental illness takes the form of her belief she is a teenager back in high school again, and in Twin Peaks, delusions are humored, so she's allowed to enroll again and try out for cheerleading. She also soon has her eye on Mike, who has seemed so lost (well, offscreen) since chum Bobby Briggs forgot about him. Slick Dick Tremayne tries to show Lucy he's a fit father by bringing around an orphan named Nicky. Hank Jennings and father-in-law Ernie return from a hunting/whoring trip where Hank and Jean Renault have coerced Ernie into getting back into the criminal life, and it leads to, one has to assume, the only STD joke in the series. Ben Horne, exonerated but having lost his big Ghostwood Estates deal, looks at old home movies of himself and his dad and starts to fall apart. David Duchovny as Dennis/Denise has some fun scenes, and we dig more into both the meaning of the White Lodge (courtesy of Hawk) and Andrew Packard and Thomas Eckhardt, as well as Rick Deckard, Jack Rickards, and Keith and Reed Richards.
