In this episode, Yaakov Lappin and I assess the fall out of the NYT article that claims that "Trump Waved Off Israeli Strike [against Iran's nuclear weapons program] After Divisions Emerged in His Administration." We ask who leaked the information and what Trump and Bibi's next steps might be in light of the story and emerging disagreement between the two. We then clash on the question of what an Iranian retaliation might look like in the event of a solo Israeli, or Israel-U.S. kinetic strike against Iran's nuclear facilities. Since the discovery of natural gas almost 15 years ago in the Eastern Mediterranean, we've seen this region come together in unexpected ways. Ties have expanded beyond Greece, Cyprus and Israel to include a number of Middle East countries, the US, and the EU, and have moved well beyond energy into the security realm as well. Michael Rubin, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, and Gregg Roman, executive director of the Middle East Forum, join Thanos Davelis to look at how East Med diplomacy is transforming the security landscape of the region. You can read the articles we discuss on our podcast here:Trump reacts to Mitsotakis interview: ‘I appreciate his comments'Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis: Europe Can Find ‘Win-Win Solution' with President Trump on Trade that Is ‘Mutually Beneficial'‘No room for complacency' in wildfire strategy
In this episode of the show, we focus on the Supreme Court's deliberations over whether or not the Prime Minister can dismiss the Head of the Shin-Bet, the IDF's maneuvers inside the Gaza Strip, the possibility of Hezbollah disarming and, finally, what are the main takeaways from Bibi's visit to the White House. When protests against decades of rule by the Assad family were crushed by Syrian government forces in the spring of 2011, opposition groups took up arms and the country descended into civil war. The conflict drew in Syria's Kurds, jihadi groups including Islamic State and al-Qaeda, and the international community.13 years on President Assad controls around two thirds of the country, but northern Syria remains out of the regime's grip and is highly volatile. Internal divisions, international influences and a worsening humanitarian situation may be about to further destabilise the region, with potentially serious consequences for Syria and the world. So, in this episode of The Inquiry, we're asking ‘What's the future for Syria's divided north?'Contributors Dr Burcu Ozcelik, Senior Research Fellow for Middle East Security at the Royal United Services Institute. Concluding our series on how the UK's new Labour government is approaching key foreign policy questions, we turn to the Middle East. It is in the Middle East that Labour's ‘progressive realist' foreign policy will be most tested – especially in the context of the Israel-Palestine conflict. Signalling the importance of the Middle East to the new government, Foreign Secretary David Lammy visited Israel and the Palestinian Territories just over a week after Labour's election victory. The UK's distinct regional profile has faded in recent years as London has approached the Middle East in broad alignment with the US and focused on concluding trade deals rather than pursuing high-level diplomatic engagements. Will the UK under a Labour government seek to carve out a more distinct regional approach and play a more prominent role in the Middle East? Host Neil Melvin is joined by Dr Burcu Ozcelik, RUSI Senior Research Fellow for Middle East Security, and Dr Michael Stephens, RUSI Senior Associate Fellow, to answer this and more.

The Baker Institute's Kristian Coates Ulrichsen joins Arab Digest editor William Law for a conversation about the extremist regime Benjamin Netanyahu has assembled and how far-right ministers like Itamar Ben-Gvir in provoking provocations against Palestinians are creating a dangerous new environment, a tinderbox which needs only a single spark to set off a major regional conflagration. This podcast episode marks the launch of Strategic Survey 2022 with a discussion about the main themes and trends in geopolitics. Guest podcast host James Crabtree is joined by Dr Nigel Gould-Davies, Editor Strategic Survey & Senior Fellow for Russia and Eurasia, Meia Nouwens, Senior Fellow for Chinese Security and Defence Policy, and Emile Hokayem, Senior Fellow for Middle East Security.
