»----------------------------------MUSIQUES DE FONDBill Evans Trio - You Must Believe in Spring - The Peacocks Erik Satie - Gnossiennes 1-5 Miles Davis - Kind of Blue - Blue In Green------------------------------BTC TOUCHPOINTLe siteTous les épisodes du Podcast----------------------------LE LIVRE- Etat mais qu'as-tu fait de notre monnaie ? Hey everyone! Why is a jazz album on this list? We don't know. Are we actually smart guys who know a lot about jazz? YES, we are! Thanks, Ken Burns! We talk about the greatest selling jazz album of all time and Rob teaches you very poorly about Modal music. You might say he is a modal student! If podcasting is cool, you can call us Miles Davis! Rob starts by immediately calling the album by the wrong name and then talking about his love-hate relationship with Poke bowls. Then Russ tells us about dating when you don't drink coffee, and Matt gives us a shorts update. Then Aaron drops a bomb on us about his radio problems and Matt actually agrees with him. We talk video games and somehow this makes us talk about ROCKY TOP by the Osbourne Brothers. We are talking about Art Blakey, Tony Danza, Karl Malone, John Coltrane, Dave Brubeck, Cannonball Adderly and we talk about people who started in a group and struck gold as solo artists. (Including Rob in the future hopefully.) Dirty Big Bopper makes a comeback and Russ learns how to almost separate an egg.
This week, Scott and Karl are joined by Producer Trent Jones to discuss the best-selling jazz record of all time, Miles Davis' Kind of Blue. Recorded in 1959 at Columbia's 30th Street Studio in New York City, this album brings together six other now-legendary musicians in the prime of their careers: tenor saxophonist John Coltrane, alto saxophonist Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, pianists Bill Evans and Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Jimmy Cobb. As a trumpeter, Davis is known for experimenting with "modal jazz" instead of the usual harmonic foundation of jazz. As Scott puts it, "he is deconstructing the art to seek some expression." Trent continues, "Structured music can push you to feel a certain thing whereas here, we are exploring. It's free-form. It's more in tune with the raw emotions and thought that is happening." Kind of Blue has been regarded by many critics as the greatest jazz record, Davis's personal masterpiece, even one of the best albums of all time. If something gets the moniker of 'the best ever,' you have to wonder: is it famous for just being famous? As a Davis fan, Karl says, "It's a different type of jazz. It's been influential in all sorts of atmospheric kinds of music that floats around you." Tune in for more music and ideas, brought to you by Online Great Books.
One of the most important records in the career of one of the most important artists of the past hundred years, Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue is a seminal album for almost anyone who hears it. Mike and Rod revisit the time it entered their lives while Glenn reacts to hearing it for the first time, just last week to prep for this episode more than six decades after its initial release. At some point during the week before we laid down this episode, one of us circulated a Honda scooter ad starring Miles Davis from the 1980s. If you've ever seen it, it's more or less...terrifying, which is a helluva thing to accuse of a Honda scooter commercial from the 1980s. Miles could be well and truly ominous when he wanted to be, even when (sort of) pitching something. He was, after all, known in his later years for playing entire sets with his back to the paying audience. He wasn't here, specifically, for you. In 1959, sixty or so years (almost to the day) prior to this episode, Davis assembled a team of players in the stratosphere of their careers: John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley on sax, pianist Bill Evans, bassist Paul Chambers, drummer Jimmy Cobb and new band pianist Wynton Kelly, who sat in for a track. It was heady company, and by the time they hit the studio, Miles had considered the ideas and signatures behind Kind of Blue thoroughly. The result was a legendary "conversation" between instruments, a subtle juxtaposition of styles that has continued to chart ever since. It's a solid starter jazz record for the neophyte ear, packed with enough nuance to reward repeat listenings from staunch collectors. Kind of Blue is only six songs long. But the tracks run much deeper than that. In this show, we ponder a classic. Turno Livre ON #14 – Miles Davis (Kind of Blue) “Música moderna de origem negro-americana, muito difundida após a guerra de 1914-1918, caracterizada pelo improviso e pelas sonoridades e ritmos sincopados, basicamente extraídos do ragtime e do blues.” O disco Kind of Blue irá comemorar 60 anos em agosto. To begin the New Year we are going to look back 60 years to the year 1959 and as so many iconic and essential recordings were made in that productive year we will be exploring four hand-picked recordings for the four Mondays in January and later in the year we will return to 1959 a couple more times to explore more classic recordings from that golden year. We begin tonight with perhaps the most iconic Jazz recording ever. Miles Davis's "Kind of Blue". This record continues to sell and is listened to by people even those with limited or no interest in Jazz. It has transcended labeling. Miles Davis composed all the tunes and his band included Julian "Cannonball" Adderley on alto saxophone, John Coltrane on tenor saxophone, Wynton Kelly on piano (on one tune only), Bill Evans on piano on the rest, Paul Chambers on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums. Tonight we'll hear this recording in a new way in the sequence that the band originally recorded the tunes. Doing it this way can make listeners familiar with the music hear things in a new way. The recording was done in two sessions. The first on March 2,1959 and the second on April 22,1959. Kind of Blue is this month's first Jazz Feature so a Happy New year to all.

Welcome to our 2nd show of 2018, we invite my nephew Ethan Rush to the Mic. Ethan currently resides in Madison WI and works with the underground Hip Hop scene. We begin our discussion with Ethan breaking my heart, yes I do have one, with a discussion on pizza. He is about to order a Dominoes Pizza because they are the only ones that deliver, however, he concedes that the pizza he ate in Chicago is far superior, pizza from Chicago's Pizza where they flavor profiled the pizza and discovered that Merlot went best with deep dish pizza, specifically Bogle Merlot. Before we get into the interview, you will notice our bump in music was a wee bit different, we started with the into to Ethan's song Satan is for Goth Kids. You can pick up more music from Ethan on his Soundcloud Page. We delve into the proper pronunciation of Bogle and discover that if you play bogle while drinking Bogle Merlot and eat deep dish pizza from Chicago Pizza in Ravenswood Chicago you will open up a slipstream into another universe and really who has time for that. We discuss the first album/cd that I gave Ethan when he was 8 Miles Davis Kind of Blue. Go get that on vinyl, don't screw with cd or mp3 bullshit, get the vinyl. This changed his life and was the foundation for his musical exploration. We start the patreon fund for having Miles Davis Quartet from the Kind of Blue era put on Mt Rushmore and removing the other hacks that are currently there. Ethan promises to be the first to do a monthly contribution. We learn about Ethan's penchant for finger painting. Also he discusses the benefits of having a marker board on his refridgerator and the need for more space on it and the benefits of seeing a sign after a hard day to make you smile and feel better about yourself. We discuss the best way to go to the D.A.'s office and I recommend a rum and coke and not to fight people there, Ethan decides that he would like a Jack and coke and agrees to no fighting. At 16:30 we drop in the full version of Satan is For Goth Kids from Ethan. We get back into the great pizza debate and my history of delivering pizzas for Little Ceaser's, home of the 5 buck pizza that stays soggy all day. Also they are not an official sponsor of our show. At 26:12 we feature If the Birds Don't Eat Their Wings Ethan discusses the empowering nature of hip op that often gets lost in all the glitz and glamour. Discussion of the Word Up Poetry Slam in Chicago and his thoughts on what he learned and how he learned and how that experience made him a better writer. We discuss what fuels Ethan's creativity, and it is coffee, but not just any coffee, French Press Coffee, specifically coffee from Metropolis Coffee from Rogers Park Chicago. (Again not an official sponsor of the show, but hey make sure you grab some from the link and tell them we sent you). We discuss the 4 year cleansing process that one must go through to have French Press coffee with me on Sundays. this conversation devolves around Khali and Shiva, old neighbors of mine in Chicago. We delve into thoughts about being a receptacle vs being and active participant at shows we have seen specifically Saul Williams shows in Chicago. Then we get into Ethan's knowledge of hockey. His 5 fine points of hockey knowledge. The Satanic 7 questions are answered. Ethan does struggle with the Hitchiker's Guide question and the Monty Pytheon Question, but ends strong with 4.5 points our of 7. Respectable and there is no question of favoritism. The magic wand question finds Ethan writting a book about small towns and certain places in small towns, we decide it will take him years but we will see his progress in season 2.

Hello! This time around, I wanted to capture a bit of a vibe from the time that one drifts off to sleep until the awakening. I started off with something from BIOSPHERE that for some reason reminds me of growing up in Daytona Beach, Florida. I lived not too far from the beach, and as the youngest of 6 spent a lot of time outside playing Frisbee in the summer. I was also not too far from the airport and Embry Riddle University. The students there often flew small prop planes for study (fun study, right?), and hearing this song from BIOSPHERE really takes me back to that time when I was young, carefree, and spending all day outside until day faded until night. I put in the rain to transition between 2 events: the end of the evening and that time when just before sleep when your mind begins to visualize bizarre things. I wanted you to imagine you are hearing something out of the ordinary, hence the GLOBAL COMMUNICATION talking and an excerpt from JIM HALL’s Beija Flor. Beija Flor is a piece written by South American composer (can’t remember who), and this rendition from JIM HALL does it much justice. As far as jazz albums go, his album All Across the City and Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue are both my favorites (tie). I have a lot of soundtrack material, and one day I’ll put more into use. I love everything about the soundtrack to American Beauty. Not only is it one of my all time favorite films (Kevin Spacey is an absolute hero!), but the music is dead on accurate as far as creating the right mood for the film. I’m envious of THOMAS NEWMAN. When you read his Wikipedia page, you’ll be blown away by the amount of output he’s had. Oddly, I discovered the song Cirrus (HUGH & SATURATION) from a game created by IVORY called 4 DIFFERENCES. When the game loads, you can click a link to their website and get all of their compositions free. Not bad. Great game as well! Again, more field recordings of a creek to break things up a little bit. The sleeping night is all about transitions. The DAVID HELPING song comes from an album called Sleeping on the Edge of the World, which is appropriately named for our nightly passage. David shares a website with Jon Jenkins, so it’s worth checking out. I have every album that PETER GABRIEL has released. Most people didn’t like OVO: The Millennium Show as much as his other stuff, but I love it. Peter’s not singing every song, there are a lot of cameos, but it’s him through and through. I spent a lot of consecutive days wearing the grooves out on this album, and every time I hear it, it’s like the first time that I’ve heard it again. And that’s okay. I have some more of his stuff that I’d like to use at some point, probably as excerpts. The last 2 artists, ROBERT RICH and DAC CROWELL are both artists that I discovered via MAGNATUNE. Robert is a household name to those that like their ambient a little bit dark, somewhat like Steve Roach in feel. DAC is a bit unorthodox, and definitely has his own approach to soundscapes which are innovative and memorable. You can stream both at MAGNATUNE. If the ending seems abrupt, it is meant to be that way (the song honestly ends like that) as you are awakening. And who ever wakes up over the course of 30 minutes? Only in Hollywood. Well, I enjoyed making the mix, and have even more ideas for the next one. I’ll create one for the sleepers probably next, or a soundtracks mix, or a collage of snippets from rock tunes. We’ll see. Enjoy!turn on, tune in, sleep...ambient-transmission.blogspot.comfacebook.com/tonepoetmusic
