Send us a Text Message.Never Let a Closed Door Keep You Out.Kate Miller has had a prolific career as an actress – from starring on Broadway with Carol Burnett in Moon Over Buffalo, to working the soap opera scene in New York on One Life to Live, to working opposite Tom Selleck in CBS's Blue Bloods, to her latest role as Amanda Shaw in Hightown, Kate has done it all. Not bad for a woman I met in her 20's playing a rambunctious Tatiana in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream with a theater company performing on the streets of New York City. In an industry that is known for discarding women after a certain age, Kate did the impossible and reinvented herself and her career in her 40s – in Los Angeles! Despite the doors being closed to her. As she says no one in Hollywood was interested in her when she showed up to begin her television career in Hollywood Land. But she persisted and those doors eventually opened to her. Today, Kate is sanguine about those times she was wandering in the wilderness of an industry that worships at the altar of youth. Kate used those hard times and the down times that she faced, as a catalyst for huge growth and personal changes that she says were necessary. She got married. She bought a house. Made a posthumous peace with a mother with whom she had a complex relationship. All the stuff that grown people hopefully do – settle into their life. Learn a few lessons. Live. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Tom Moore, Celebrated Theatre, Television And Film Director, Author, “Grease: Tell Me More, Tell Me More” About Harvey's guest: Today's special guest, Tom Moore, is a celebrated theatre, television and film director who is in large part responsible for one of the greatest Broadway shows in history – “Grease”.   He was the director of the original Broadway production, which ran for 8 years, from February 14, 1972 to April 13, 1980, making it the longest-running Broadway show at the time.  And of course, the show inspired the blockbuster movie starring Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta – who actually appeared as “Doody” in one of the national tours.   This year, to commemorate the show's 50th anniversary, a very special book has been released, edited by our guest, along with one of the show's producers, Ken Waissman, and Adrienne Barbeau, who was the original “Rizzo”, and who appeared on our show last year.  The book is entitled, “Grease: Tell Me More, Tell Me More: Stories From the Broadway Phenomenon That Started It All”.   It's a fascinating and entertaining collection of reminiscences and stories, memorable moments, hilarious mishaps, and sentimental anecdotes, giving us the inside scoop about the show, told by the creative minds that made it happen, including stars like Barry Bostwick, John Travolta, Adrienne Barbeau, Treat Williams, Marilu Henner, Peter Gallagher, Adrian Zmed and many others who appeared on stage and who worked behind the scenes.  The book is a must-read, not only for fans of the show, but for every theatre lover, because we get to share the collaborative experience of so many artists working on a labour of love, which became a momentous and beloved piece of music theatre history.   In addition to his monumental involvement in “Grease”, which earned him a Tony nomination for Best Director, our guest directed many other Broadway shows, including the nostalgic World War 2 musical, “Over Here”, starring 2 of the Andrews Sisters, “Once in a Lifetime”, “The Octette Bridge Club”, and “Moon Over Buffalo”, starring the one and only Carol Burnett.   He received a second Tony nomination for Best Director, for “Night, Mother”, and he also directed the movie, starring Sissy Spacek and Anne Bancroft.   If that weren't enough, he's a highly respected three time Emmy-nominated television director, who's directed many TV shows including “ER”, “Mad About You”, “LA Law”, “Gilmore Girls” and dozens more. For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/ https://www.facebook.com/tom.moore.33449138 #TomMoore   #Grease   #harveybrownstoneinterviews

Today, I am so excited to announce the first part of my celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Grease with it's original director Tom Moore. It may be hard for some of us to believe, but this past Valentine's Day – Feb 14, 2022 – marked the 50th Anniversary of the New York opening of the musical GREASE, at the Eden Theater on 2nd Avenue. And next week, June 7, will mark the 50th Anniversary of its official move to Broadway.  My guests this week are that Grease's original producer, Ken Waissman, and original director, Tom Moore, who along with Adrienne Barbeau (the original “Rizzo”) are the editors of the new book : Grease – Tell Me More, Tell Me More – Stories From The Broadway Phenomenon That Started It All. Ken Waisman is a Tony Award winning producer who made his Broadway debut with the play And Miss Reardon Drinks A Little. In addition to Grease he went on to produce Over Here! starring the Andrews Sisters, and the long running plays Agnes Of God, and Torch Song Trilogy. Tom Moore is a leading theater, film and television director whose work on Broadway includes his debut with Grease, Over Here!, Moon Over Buffalo starring Carol Burnett, and Night Mother. Their new book is made up of a the personal, behind-the-scenes memories of the show's creative and production teams, as well as scores of cast members from Grease's original cast, five national tours, and record breaking eight-year run on Broadway. In this episode you will hear about how Ken discovered the show in a ramshackle community theater production in Chicago; why Ken chose Tom to direct the show instead of Michael Bennett; how Tom almost turned the show down; and how together they discovered and cast more future stars than probably any other musical in history! Grease alumni include Adrianne Barbeau, Barry Bostwick, Jeff Conaway, Carole Demas, Greg Evigan, Peter Gallagher, Richard Gere, Marilu Henner, Judy Kaye, Rex Smith, Patrick Swayze, John Travolta, Treat Williams, and Adrian Zmed. As well as the future Broadway directors Walter Bobbie, Scott Ellis, and Jerry Zaks. Has any other show produced that many stars?  Even if Grease is not your favorite show, I feel certain that you will be fascinated by their stories of how the show came together, as well as the casting stories of John Travolta, Patrick Swayze and Richard Gere. Broadway Nation is written and produced by me, David Armstrong. Playwright Ken Ludwig has a resume most theater folks would envy: his ear and eye for humor has given him hit after hit. His first play on Broadway was Lend Me a Tenor which had already opened in London where it garnered some Olivier Awards. (When it opened on Broadway, it picked up a Tony). He followed this with Crazy for You—a play inspired by the music of George and Ira Gershwin. This tune-packed extravaganza delighted audiences as much as the critics—it ran for five years and won the Tony Award for best musical. His extraordinary run of plays include Twentieth Century, Moon Over Buffalo and Leading Ladies. His most recent play just had its world premiere at Arena Stage here in Washington DC. It's a two-hander called Dear Jack, Dear Louise, and it's based on the correspondence between his parents during World War II. While it has amusing moments, no one would call this laugh-filled, nor is it meant to be. It's simply a story of two people who get to know one another and fall in love through their correspondence. In this podcast, Ken Ludwig takes us behind the scenes of writing and mounting a play, why so many of his plays are set in a theatrical environment and his deep life-long love affair with theater.

Continuing with the tradition of theatre companies producing theatre about theatre, 6th Street Playhouse is presenting Ken Ludwig’s 1995 door-slamming farce Moon Over Buffalo. The backstage comedy runs through February 3. Buffalo, New York’s Erlanger Theater is hosting the repertory company of George and Charlotte Hay (Dodds Delzell & Madeleine Ashe), grade-B actors and grade-A hams who never made it big on stage. Content to spend their waning years touring second-rate theatres and playing roles more appropriate for actors half their age, they’re on the ropes when word comes to George that Frank Capra is coming to see them perform and possibly cast them as replacements for Ronald Coleman and Greer Garson in a big-budget period film. Charlotte doesn’t believe George as she’s just found out he’s been lying about an affair he had with company ingenue Eileen (Victoria Saitz) who happens to be carrying George’s child. Charlotte announces she’s running off with family friend/attorney Richard (Joe Winkler) which sends George into a drunken spiral. Charlotte finds out the Capra story is true, so it’s up to Charlotte, her recently returned daughter Rosalind (Chandler Parrot-Thomas), her daughter’s ex-lover and current stage manager Paul (Robert Nelson) and Charlotte’s hearing-impaired mother Ethel (Shirley Nilsen Hall) to sober up George in time for the matinee. There’s also the confusion over Rosalind’s current fiancé Howard (Erik Weiss), a TV weatherman who is mistaken by Charlotte for Capra and by George as Eileen’s vengeful brother, and a concluding performance of Noël Coward’s Private Lives mashed up with Cyrano de Bergerac. Director Carl Jordan has a terrific cast of comedic talents running, jumping, stumbling and rolling through Ludwig’s tale which comes off as a lesser knock-off of his superior Lend Me a Tenor. All the elements are there (mistaken identity, feuding lovers, running jokes, etc.) but at its core it’s a hollow re-do that starts slowly before hitting its stride. More problematic, the characters as written simply aren’t very likeable. The show only works if you care about the characters and want them to get out of their mess. I just didn’t. The set by Jason Jamerson is solid – literally, as it has to withstand two hours of door slamming – and it’s one of the better sets seen recently on 6th Street’s stage. The cast is game and their timing is great with each squeezing some laughs out of their characters. Delzell gets to play half the show soused, Parrot-Thomas is quite delightful as Rosalind, and while Weiss’s physical comedy is always fun to watch, I’d really like to see him do something different with his next role. Moon Over Buffalo is a case where the whole is less than the sum of its parts. 'Moon Over Buffalo' runs Friday through Sunday through February 3 at 6th Street Playhouse in Santa Rosa. Friday and Saturday evening performances are at 7:30pm; the Sunday matinee is at 2pm. There’s a Thursday, January 24 performance at 7:30 pm For more information, go to 6thstreetplayhouse.com

He has 96 Broadway productions to his credit including Copperfield, Checking Out, Moon Over Buffalo, Grind, Hello Dolly!, Meet Me in St. Louis, On the Twentieth Century, Side by Side by Sondheim, Lettice and Lovage, Tru, The Scottsboro Boys, and Sweeney Todd. Off-Broadway productions include Sylvia, London Suite, Annie Warbucks, Lips Together, Teeth Apart, The Lisbon Traviata, What the Butler Saw, and Fortune and Men's Eyes. In November 2015, Billington was inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame. You’ll hear one of the industry’s best lighting designers talk about . . . How he prepares to light a show before he even sees a rehearsal. How Directors should work with lighting (and all) designers. The incredible changes in the lighting industry over the past 3 decades . . . and what’s coming next. How to speed up the “bidding” process and save money. One of my favorite answers to my “Genie” question and how I’m going to steal it. Keep up with me: @KenDavenportBway www.theproducersperspective.com Learn more about your ad choices.
