This week we get to hear from acclaimed songwriter Dean Pitchford! After 45 years of near consistent success, Dean will finally be inducted in the Songwriters Hall of Fame this year, which is just another line on his impressive resume. He won an Oscar for writing "Fame" for Irene Cara and achieved the absolute peak with Footloose. He not only wrote the screenplay, but every song on the soundtrack and collected a couple Grammys in the process. He tried again a few years later with the movie Sing, but it was less successful and his thoughts on why are fascinating. Along the way there have been collaborations with Roger Daltrey ("Quicksilver Lightning"), Cher ("After All"), Peter Allen ("The Boy From Oz"), Kenny Loggins ("Don't Fight It"), writing the Solid Gold theme song, and tons more.  He's just about the nicest man you'll ever meet and we're super lucky to hear from him. On the version of Hot off the Wire posted Jan. 18 at 6:45 a.m. CT: PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Authorities says a power line fell on a car in Portland, Oregon, killing three people and injuring a baby during an ice storm that turned roads and mountain highways treacherous in the Pacific Northwest. In a statement, the fire department said a large branch fell on the power line, causing it to crash down onto the car. Authorities say they believe the victims were electrocuted after they got out of the vehicle. Swaths of southwest Washington and northwest Oregon were under warnings earlier Wednesday for as much as an inch of ice. The National Weather Service said freezing rain could possibly return to the region Thursday and Friday. Federal officials have briefed a congressional committee on their investigations into a jetliner that lost a panel of its fuselage in midflight this month and revealed that airlines have inspected 40 identical Boeing planes. The Federal Aviation Administration said it will review information from those inspections of Boeing 737 Max 9 jets while it develops a maintenance process before letting the planes carry passengers again. Jennifer Homendy, chair of the National Transportation Safety Board, and FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker spent two hours briefing members of the Senate Commerce Committee in Washington on Wednesday as questions continue to swirl around how the panel of an Alaska Airlines jetliner had gotten blown off while traveling 16,000 feet above Oregon. RAFAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Palestinian medics say an Israeli airstrike on a home killed 16 people, half of them children, in the southern Gaza town of Rafah. Israel's military is striking targets in areas of the besieged territory where it has told civilians to seek refuge. Meanwhile, there's been no word on whether medicines that entered the territory Wednesday as part of a deal brokered by France and Qatar have been distributed to dozens of hostages held by Hamas. More than 100 days after Hamas triggered the war with its Oct. 7 attack, Israel continues to wage one of the deadliest and most destructive military campaigns in recent history. The war has rippled across the region, threatening to ignite a wider conflict. WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden is going to North Carolina to highlight $82 million in new investments that would connect 16,000 households and businesses to high-speed internet. Biden's reelection campaign is making winning North Carolina and its 16 electoral votes one of its top priorities in this year's presidential election. The Democrat narrowly lost the state in 2020 by 1.34 percentage points to then-President Donald Trump, the current Republican front-runner in what will likely be a political rematch in 2024. Biden is scheduled to speak in the state capital of Raleigh on Thursday afternoon. The Democrat plans to stress he's connecting poorer communities and businesses to the digital economy. LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Biden administration has finalized approval of $1.1 billion to help keep California's last operating nuclear power plant running. The funding is a financial backbone of the plan to keep the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant producing electricity until at least 2030. An earlier agreement to close the reactors by 2025 was voided by the Legislature in 2022 at the urging of Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom. Newsom says the power is needed to ward off blackouts amid a changing climate. Environmentalists argue California has adequate power without the four-decade-old reactors that they call a safety risk. WASHINGTON (AP) — A meeting between President Joe Biden, House Speaker Mike Johnson and other officials highlights the precarious nature of the complex talks to unlock aid for Ukraine, Israel and other U.S. allies. Negotiations hinge on lawmakers' abilities to enact tougher measures at the U.S.-Mexico border. While Biden's national security team sought to underscore the importance of unlocking Ukraine funding, Johnson is pushing the White House and Senate negotiators on immigration measures that go beyond what Biden is willing to accept. Still, an optimistic-feeling Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer says that the prospects of a border deal are “a little bit greater than half now.” COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Another Republican presidential debate has been canceled after Nikki Haley's refusal to participate in any forum that doesn't include ex-President Donald Trump. CNN announced Wednesday its Sunday debate is off. ABC and WMUR-TV a day earlier called off their Thursday debate. Haley says she'll only take part in debates if Trump is onstage. The cancelations mean for the first time in years there won't be an on-the-ground face-off ahead of New Hampshire's primary next week. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis had committed to take part in more debates. But Trump has skipped all of the GOP debates thus far, so Haley's participation had been the deciding factor in whether they would go on. WASHINGTON (AP) — Lawyers for former President Donald Trump are foreshadowing elements of their defense in the criminal case charging him with illegally retaining classified documents. They say in a motion filed Tuesday that they will dispute prosecutors' allegations that the estate where the records were stored was not secure. The defense team also said in a wide-ranging court filing that they are seeking communication between the Justice Department prosecution team and associates of President Joe Biden in hopes of advancing their claims that the classified documents case is “politically motivated” and designed to harm Trump's 2024 campaign. NEW YORK (AP) — Americans stepped up their spending at retailers in December, closing out the holiday shopping season and the year on an upbeat tone and signaling that people remain confident enough to keep spending freely. Retail sales accelerated 0.6% in December from November's 0.3% increase. Because spending by consumers accounts for nearly 70% of the U.S. economy, the report suggested that shoppers will be able to keep fueling economic growth this year. Among last month's overall retail purchases, sales at stores that sell general merchandise rose 1.3%. Sellers of clothing and accessories reported a 1.5% increase, as did online sellers. By contrast, furniture and home furnishings businesses declined 1%, reflecting a struggling housing market. SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — Two Republican legislators have filed a resolution aimed at initiating impeachment proceedings against Democratic Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham over her emergency public health orders suspending the right to carry firearms in some public places in Albuquerque. The resolution from Reps. Stefani Lord of Sandia Park and John Block of Alamogordo accuses the governor of violating her oath to uphold the state and federal constitutions. It's unclear whether the resolution will go far in the state House, where Democrats outnumber Republicans 45 to 25. Lujan Grisham invoked the orders last year in response to a spate of shootings that killed children. They have since been challenged in the courts. The NBA is in mourning, the Bucks are routed without Giannis, the Pacers and Raptors make a big deal, UConn plays like a top-ranked team, and Mike McCarthy will stay on as Cowboy coach. Also, Pascal Siakam is getting traded to the Pacers from the Raptors, according to an AP source. NEW YORK (AP) — Steely Dan, R.E.M., Timbaland, Hillary Lindsey and Dean Pitchford will be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Steely Dan finally get into the hall despite being a staple of classic rock with songs like “Reelin' in the Years,” “Do It Again” and “Hey Nineteen.” R.E.M. are behind such alt-rock hits as “Losing My Religion” and “Everybody Hurts." And Nashville hitmaker Lindsey helped write “Girl Crush” for Little Big Town and “Jesus, Take the Wheel” for Carrie Underwood. The induction ceremony for the class of 2024 will be held on June 13 in New York City. LONDON (AP) — Kensington Palace says the Princess of Wales has been hospitalized after undergoing planned abdominal surgery and will remain at the private London Clinic for up to two weeks. Buckingham Palace revealed moments after news of Kate's hospitalization was released on Wednesday that King Charles III would undergo a “corrective procedure” next week for an enlarged prostate. The palace said the king's condition is benign. The palace says the 75-year-old monarch has sought treatment for an enlarged prostate “in common with thousands of men each year.” The former Kate Middleton is expected to return to public duties after Easter. The 42-year-old future queen was admitted to The London Clinic on Tuesday. —The Associated Press About this program Host Terry Lipshetz is managing editor of the national newsroom for Lee Enterprises. This week, we're talking about a truly groundbreaking, influential film. It's one thing to say that, it's another to watch spiritual (and literal) sequels or remakes get made of this story, over and over again. And yet this 1980 classic is rough, raw, but still very engaging, partially because of its novelty. No, it's not great, and its 2009 remake is maybe one of the worst movies we've watched for this show. Welcome back to Part 2 of our "Carrie the Musical" 35th anniversary podcast episode with Erik Champney! Erik explains how his "Carrie: The Master Cut" film helped Linzi Hateley and others in the cast and the creative team escape 35 years of being haunted by this musical! Right away he counters any notion you have that the 1988 musical was a Broadway Flop! As Erik says, "Why are we still talking about and obsessed with a musical that is a Flop"? Erik and Andrew dig into the complex relationship between Carrie and Margaret White and their abused/abuser relationship...But Erik says there's a point where "the abused becomes the abuser." What made Linzi and Betty's chemistry so dynamic and powerful? In the song "And Eve Was Weak," Margaret belts out (so expertly done by Betty) the lyric "Oh Lord I've seen this powerful before"! Why has she seen Carrie's telekinetic power before? Erik has a lot of thoughts and let's just say that ancient Greek mythology plays a big role in his analysis! Get ready to understand how much ancient Greek myth and culture is present in Stephen King's narrative and especially in Terry Hands' direction (remember he was part of the Royal Shakespeare Company so knew his ancient Greek drama really well). Have your notebook handy so you can take down notes about mythology and how it impacts your analysis of Carrie, Margaret, Chris, Sue, Billy, Tommy, and Miss Gardner. On February 13th, 1988, "Carrie the Musical" premiered at the Royal Shakespeare Company, in Stratford, and on April 28th, it would begin previews at the Virginia Theater on Broadway (now the August Wilson). To celebrate 35 years of this enigma powerhouse of a musical, Andrew welcomes Erik Champney, a NYC playwright, screenwriter, and director, who created "Carrie: The Master Cut" which is the first professional cinematic reconstruction of the 1988 musical! Right away Erik explains his origin story for discovering the Broadway musical, and like Andrew, it all started with their first encounter with Stephen King's powerful novel! Erik explains why Terry Hands, the director of "Carrie," was so drawn to this narrative and what ancient Greek tragedies and opera have to do with Terry Hands' interpretation! Andrew has always been fascinated with the complex and powerful Debbie Allen choreography so they get into how this aspect of the show connects to Carrie's home life with her mother, Margaret. Why are the high school musical numbers so drastically different than Carrie and Margaret's numbers, or are they connected somehow? Andrew taught the 1988 Broadway production to his Broadway Musical students at Stony Brook University and with Erik, the two analyze and dissect Act One of the musical. They begin with the audience walking in and being surrounded by black walls and then being plunged into darkness with the 80s rock overture! How does Erik interpret the high school students and why is ancient Greek culture and society so important for this analysis? They get into the nuanced dynamics between Tommy and Sue compared to Billy and Chris! Erik leaves us in suspense when he explains how his "Carrie: The Master Cut" helped Linzi and others escape 35 years of being haunted by this musical. And, what about Carrie and Margaret White? One of the staple groups of the early 80's New Wave genre was Missing Persons.  Their debut album with Capital Records was Spring Session M, an anagram of the band's name. The founding trio was vocalist Dale Bozzio, drummer (and Dale's husband) Terry Bozzio, and guitarist Warren Cuchunullo.  The Bozzio's were working with Frank Zappa and met Cuchunullo when he contributed to a Zappa album.  The trio worked with session musicians, created an EP, and established a successful presence in Los Angeles.  They added bassist Patrick O'Hearn and keyboardist Chuck Wild to the band before producing their debut album.Spring Session M was a success, riding the New Wave genre to popularity.  Dale Bozzio's makeup and quirky vocals added to that success, as did her photogenic presence in the band's videos on the fledgling cable channel MTV.  Unfortunately, Spring Session M would also be the high water mark for the band, with follow-up albums failing to achieve similar success.  The band broke up in 1986, as did the Bozzio's marriage.  However Dale Bozzio, Cuchunullo, and O'Hearn would continue to work together on solo projects and Mission Persons reunions.  The band tours today, with Dale Bozzio as the only founding member still present. WindowsThis song expresses the idea of watching life from the safety of the windows rather than participating in it.  It was the third of four singles released from the album.  Words"What are words for when no one listens?"  The lyrics for this song chronicles the apathy of society and the efforts that people make to be seen and heard:  "Do you hear me?  Do you care?"  "Not only are they deaf and dumb they could be going blind and no one notices.  I think I'll die my hair blue."  This is also a good example of Dale Bozzio's vocal range.Noticeable OneAlthough there was some airplay for this song, it was not released as a single.  Continuing the theme of attention or lack of attention, this song calls for the listener to "Notice me!"Destination Unknown The biggest hit (tied with "Words" on the charts) only went to number 42, but spent 13 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100.  The synth heavy song was on their 1980 EP, and was released on this album.  It saw heavy airplay in the early days of MTV.  "Life is so strange (destination unknown) when you don't know your destination." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:The Imperial March (the Darth Vader Theme from the motion picture “The Empire Strikes Back”)This movie was re-released (actually the third release) in November 1982 in preparation for the third installment in the trilogy to follow. STAFF PICKS:New World Man by RushBrian's staff pick is from the album Signals.  "He's noble enough to know what's right but weak enough not to choose it.  He's wise enough to win the world but fool enough to lose it."  Surprisingly this is the highest charting single by Rush hitting number 21 on the Billboard Top 40 - the only Rush song to make the top 40.  The song was a last-minute addition to the album.  Don't Fight It by Kenny Loggins and Steve PerryBruce brings us a song off Kenny Loggin's album "High Adventure."  Loggins and Perry co-wrote this rocker with Dean Pitchford who would go on to write the screenplay for Footloose.  The guitar work is from Neil Giraldo, Pat Benatar's husband and guitarist.  This is one of Perry's furst non-Journey works, and he was looking to connect with other songwriters as he prepared to work on his solo album. Halloween by the Dead KennedysWayne features a punk work which encourages people to be themselves each day rather than just putting on masks at Halloween.  The Dead Kennedys formed in 1978, and this song is off their second studio album, "Plastic Surgery Disasters."  They recorded four albums before breaking up in 1986, though they have reformed from time to time ever since.Crazy by SupertrampRob's staff pick is "a little song to make you feel good," a deep cut off the last album with Roger Hodgson.  It is off their studio album "...Famous Last Words..." which was their follow-up to the amazingly successful "Breakfast in America."  The album would reach number 5 on the album charts and contained the hit "It's Raining Again." INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:D. It’s been quite a journey. Holly and Chris look back at their Carrie adventure and try and answer some burning questions.  We ask an expert, author of ‘Flop Musicals of the Twentieth Century’ Stephen Purdy, if Carrie really can be defined as a flop compared to some prominent recent mega-failures. We also find out from writer Peter Michael Marino, creator of the doomed ‘Desperately Seeking Susan’ musical, what it’s like to have your new musical trashed (FYI: we saw it twice and had a great time), plus the legendary Alice Ripley also shares her experiences of being in well-loved musicals which were hit by premature closure, like ‘American Psycho’ and ‘Side Show’.  And finally - a post mortem. Where did it go wrong? Who was to blame? Could Carrie have been fixed? Can you even do horror on stage? Can we just do this as a job forever?  Plus, we leave the last word to our gang of original cast members to tell us how this funny little musical changed their lives forever. By 2012, over two decades had passed since Carrie the Musical’s high-profile Broadway car crash, and the last thing its creators wanted was to resurrect the show that haunted them. But the requests for a revival kept coming in.   We find out why Director Stafford Arima was determined to give the show a new life, and how he persuaded the writers to give Carrie another chance in a smaller, tighter new production (with not a unitard or giant staircase in sight). We meet two of the stars of that ‘revisal’, Molly Ranson and Carmen Cusack, and speak to award-winning vocal designer AnnMarie Milazzo about how she reinvented the sound of Carrie for a new generation. Is it possible to shake off the reputation of a show that’s known as a complete disaster? And can you really do Carrie without the blood? Shalamar started life as a “manufactured” group. Dick Griffey was the talent co-ordinator for Soul Train when he decided to set up his own record label – SOLAR. SOLAR is an acronym for Sounds Of Los Angeles records. Dick took session musicians and created a hit record – called Uptown Festival - which was credited to a faceless artist “Shalamar” in 1977. When the record became a hit he realised that there was a demand for an actual group so he set about creating one with soul train dancers Jeffrey Daniel and Jody Watley together with singer Gary Mumford, the latter of whom quickly left the group to pursue other interests. Jeffrey Daniel had met Howard Hewett at the LA nightclub “Maverick Flat” a few years earlier and had already asked him to take up lead vocals after Mumford’s departure. At that time, Hewett was committed to another contract to tour Europe with a covers band. When Brown left, Daniel asked Hewett to come on board again and this time he agreed. The rest is history. Hewett’s first record The Second Time Around was a million seller. As well as being number one on the US R&B chart it went on to reach number eight in the main Billboard pop chart indicating Shalamar’s intention to cross over with an edgy sound incorporating funk, disco, R&B and pop. The trio consisting of Howard Hewett as lead vocalist together with Jeffrey Daniel and Jody Watley became known as the “classic” line up of the group. From late 1979 to mid 1983 they racked up more than a dozen hits all over the world including North America, Europe, Africa and Japan. In the UK, Shalamar are also remembered for Jeffrey Daniel’s famous appearances on Top of the Pops where he introduced body popping and moonwalking to UK audiences. Daniel is also an award-winning choreographer well known for teaching the moonwalk to Michael Jackson as well as co-choreographing some of Michael's videos and for being his dance mentor. At the height of their fame in 1983, Jody Watley and Daniel left Shalamar leaving Hewett to continue the group with new members and further hits resulting in a personal grammy for Hewett. In 1999, Howard Hewett and Jeffrey Daniel reformed the group and began touring again. For a number of years they left the third slot empty as they continued to invite Jody Watley back into the group. When they were happy that they had tried their best to encourage Watley to re-join, they felt that they should look for another female vocalist. The natural choice of replacement was Carolyn Griffey, daughter of founder Dick Griffey. She grew up a pre-teenager spending much time in the offices and studios of Solar Records in the presence of the original Shalamar and their label bandmates including The Whispers, Midnight Star and her mother Carrie Lucas, herself an accomplished R&B artist. At the age of 18 Carolyn had a record deal with another group Absolute who had two songs featured on the soundtrack of the film Lambada.   So for all intents and purposes we focus here on the years 82 and pre and no later than 89. The sweet spot for Shalamar is noted here in the early to mid 80's.   Their first hit was "Uptown Festival" (1977), released on Soul Train Records. Which was an interpolation of the songs in a disco mix all one song. Combined. Some of the first mixes.. this would be a singer of a mix tape in modern times ("Going to a Go-Go" / "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)" / "Uptight (Everything's Alright)" / "Stop! In the Name of Love" / "It's the Same Old Song" / "The Tears of a Clown" / "Love Is Like an Itching in My Heart" / "This Old Heart of Mine (Is Weak for You)" / "Baby Love" / "He Was Really Saying Somethin'")   (Out of uptown festival) Take it to the bank intro Theirs a great set of session players and singers. Almost like the Stars on Series of the time they had done for Elvis and the Beatles they were like these disco medleys.. Maybe these are running in tandem together. But that song there was a disco masterminded by dick Griffey... In time... we are up to the Disco Gardens release from Shalamar which is the second album by Shalamar, released in 1978 on the SOLAR label. It features the line-up of Gerald Brown, Jeffrey Daniels and Jody Watley, and was the only Shalamar album on which Gerald Brown appeared. Disco Gardens was less successful than Shalamar's debut Uptown Festival, peaking at #52 on the R&B chart and #171 on the Billboard chart. It contains early indications of what was to become the distinctive "SOLAR sound", most notably on the single release "Take That to the Bank" which was a UK Top 20 hit in early 1979. Here it is now on the Old School rewind podcast (Second time around) This is Shalamar on the Old School rewind, we're up to Big Fun, the third album from the group Shalamar, Big Fun released in 79 on SOLAR , it was produced by Leon Sylvers III and is the first album to feature what is considered the 'classic' Shalamar line-up (Jeffrey Daniels, Howard Hewett and Jody Watley), with Hewett having replaced Gerald Brown. Big Fun has been certified Gold in the United States for sales of over 500,000. It peaked at #4 on the R&B chart and #23 on the Billboard chart (Shalamar's highest-placing album on this chart). In the UK it reached #45 The biggest hit as of now and from BIG FUN is "The Second Time Around". "The Second Time Around" was a monster and even the focus of a radio station promotion In 1980, the band made a promotion of "The Second Time Around" for the radio station KJR in Seattle, called "The Sonics Came to Play," dedicated to the Seattle SuperSonics who had won the NBA Championship the previous year. The track was originally recorded by Shalamar and appeared on their 1980 Platinum album, Three for Love. The song was the third single released it peaked at No. 17 on the U.S. R&B chart in 1981. This is for the lover in you was later remade by Babyface from the album The Day featuring LL Cool J and the former members of Shalamar: Howard Hewett, Jody Watley, and Jeffrey Daniel. The Babyface version was a successful hit, reaching #6 on the U.S. Hot 100 chart, #2 on the U.S. R&B chart, and #12 on the UK Singles Chart. The song was considered to be atypical for Babyface when it was released. (Play for the lover in you) (Out of lover in you,) "I Can Make You Feel Good" is a 1982 song by American R&B group Shalamar from their Platinum album Friends. It reached No. 7 in the UK making it their first top ten hit, Play I can make you feel good Out of I can make you feel good The westside connickyy nection to the shalamar band and the entire artist roster form Dick Griffeys label solar like midnight star and more... was the sound. Play a night to remember   Out of night to remember Into dead giveaway The Look is the seventh album by American R&B group Shalamar, released in 1983 on the SOLAR label. It is the last Shalamar album to feature the line-up of Jeffrey Daniels, Howard Hewett and Jody Watley, as both Daniels and Watley would leave the group shortly before its release The Look peaked at No. 13 on the R&B chart and No. 79 on the Billboard pop chart. Like Shalamar's previous album, Friends, it was more successful in the United Kingdom, where it reached No. 7. The Look was certified Gold in the UK. The Time guitarist Jesse Johnson plays rhythm guitar on "Dead Giveaway", uncredited. It brought us the song dead giveaway from shalamar on the old school rewind Out of dead giveaway That's dead giveaway as we focus on the true school old school of dance and hip hop. Playing tribute to Shalamar and the genius of Dick Griffey and his manufactured group. Howard really delivers on the single "Dancing in the Sheets" a song written by Bill Wolfer and Dean Pitchford featured on the chart-topping soundtrack album of the 1984 motion picture Footloose and was also the first single from their album Heartbreak, featuring the new line-up of Howard Hewett, Delisa Davis and Micki Free. The synth melody on the song is similar in structure to Prince's "1999". A music video was made featuring the new line-up and did not feature any footage from the film. "Dancing in the Sheets" was a top 20 hit on the Billboard charts, peaking at No. 17 on the Hot 100 and reaching No. 18 on the Hot Black singles chart. On the UK Singles Chart, the song climbed to No. 41. That'll do it for this weeks old school rewind podcast. Thanks from the 35 acres and a microphone podcast farm.. Next week the whispers as we pay tribute to the best area of music ever.. Old School .
