This week's episode serves as a semi-Sled Island spotlight, with music from a slew of artists who'll be in Calgary this week, including Michael Peter Olsen, Jeff Parker, Lael Neale, Tess Roby, WITCH, Malcolm Mooney, Juana Molina, Irreversible Entanglements, and more. It's only a semi-spotlight, though, because there's also your usual AM mix of new and classic tunes for a new (and potentially classic) week. This week on Transmissions: Camae Ayewa, better known as Moor Mother. As one-half of the Black Quantum Futurism collective, a creative project she founded with Rasheedah Philips, Ayewa has focused her considerable energies on “the manipulation of space-time in order to see into possible futures, and/or collapse space-time into a desired future in order to bring about that future's reality.” As the front-person of the incendiary jazz punk group Irreversible Entanglements, she's let it rip on a series of albums released by International Anthem & Don Giovanni Records. Last year's Protect Your Light found the band moving to the legendary Impulse! Records. Along the way, she's released records under the Moor Mother banner, like 2021's Black Encyclopedia of the Air and 2022's Jazz Codes. Her latest is The Great Bailout, a record that functions at times like a sonic horror movie, while also possessing tremendous passages of beauty. Joined by guests like Lonnie Holley, Kyle Kidd, and Sistazz of the Nitty Gritty—past Transmissions guest Angel Bat Dawid delivers an absolutely breathtaking clarinet solo out ‘South Sea”—the album finds Moor Mother transmuting jazz, noise, rock, folk, gospel, classical music—melting down genres in a poetic churn. Moor Mother plays history and time like a science fiction story, bending temporal moments in a psychedelic flurry. This conversation flows in similar way. Join us to jump through timelines, ponder the Mandela Effect, and untangle histories with Moor Mother on Transmissions. Just announced: Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions Live! at the Philosophical Research Society in Los Angeles, feat. Two chats with musician, sculptor Lonnie Holley and poet Moor Mother (Camae Awaye) chatting through their practices, converging across their innovative use of materials, unique ways of collaborating and principled resistance. A conversation to sink deep into, with both Lonnie and Camae reminding us that beauty is in our toolkit for the revolution. You can catch them both live, alongside free jazz ensemble Irreversible Entanglements, at the Opera House on February 26, more details here. The renowned poet, Nikki Giovanni has a new album “The Gospel According To Nikki Giovanni.”In addition to publishing dozens of poetry works, Nikki Giovanni has recorded several spoken word albums over the course of 50 years. But this time, she's doing something a little different. The new album, a collaboration with saxophonist Javon Jackson, is a collection of gospel hymns and spirituals set to jazz. Growing up in the Baptist church, Giovanni says gospel music was instrumental to understanding herself as a poet.“The spirituals had a message,” she says. “They weren't just some people woke up one morning or came from working in the evening and said, ‘Oh, let's sit down and sing.' They were sharing information with each other.”" The truth exists in the world and it is the job of the poet to pull the truth out of violentical air and place it with care upon the page to be casted from the mouth to the hearts of the people." – Camae Ayewa (Moor Mother, Irreversible Entanglements)

Ved. Domantas Razauskas

We go in hard this week, with the consistently dancefloor filling Otim Alpha terrorising us with his high BPM electro Acholi sounds. There are let-ups sprinkled across the pod, with the exquisite new Elena Setien record on Thrill Jockey, and spiritual jazz from Irreversible Entanglements. Mostly though, we're going uptempo, with a cracker from Rose Bonica, Gorge sounds from Adam Ondo Martenot, and Niger hip hop from Mamaki Boys, proving massive highlights on the pod.

--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/jazz-in-family/message
In this third podcast on some of the best-reviewed jazz of the 2010's that we missed first time 'round, the boys look at four albums that 'borrow' something, whether inspiration from a sci-fi author, jazz protests of the sixties, or jazz greats of the past such as Charlie Parker or Duke Ellington. It's a light pop matters segment this time but little known indie band The Bolshoi and Italian horror soundtrack maestros Goblin do get a mention. Delfeayo Marsalis – SWEET THUNDER; Irreversible Entanglements – IRREVERSABLE ENTANGLEMENTS; Nichole Mitchell – MANDORLA AWAKENING II: EMERGING WORLDS; Rudresh Mahanthappa – BIRD CALLS.
On Heritage of the Invisible II, Aquiles Navarro (trumpet) and Tcheser Holmes (percussion) – one half of the mighty Irreversible Entanglements – are celebrating their Afro-Carribbean heritage in ecstatic fashion. The resulting album is less a collection of songs than an organic rendering their culture, friendship, and seemingly telepathic level of communication the duo shares. PLUS! Discover a collection of gorgeous new songs about transformation and peace with Jennifer Castle’s Monarch Season.Love this show? Let us know by supporting us. Quick. Easy. Irreversible Entanglements are a liberation-oriented free jazz collective formed in early 2015 by saxophonist Keir Neuringer, poet Camae Ayewa (a.k.a. Moor Mother) and bassist Luke Stewart, who came together to perform at a Musicians Against Police Brutality event organized after the slaying of Akai Gurley by the NYPD. Their music is soothing, chaotic, powerful, and deeply rooted in movements for Black freedom and resistance. Today on the Rebel Beat we're joined by Keir and Luke from the band who join us from Philly and Washington D.C. respectively to talk about their new album "Who sent you?", band life under lockdown, and the radical politics of jazz improvisation. Enjoy! Episode 100 will be coming out on May Day (May 1st), and we want to hear from you! Send us your audio Mayday greetings to rebel@ckut.ca by April 27th Dig this podcast? Jazz has long been one of the most potent musical languages that we have, and on their second album, Irreversible Entanglements are wielding it like a righteous sword. Who Sent You explores injustice and resistance with cacophonous horns, warped bass-lines, and the barely-contained rage of poet Camae Ayewa (Moor Mother). The album's greatest triumph though, lies in the revelation that there can be exaltation in struggle and grace to be found in our common humanity if we're willing to receive it. Join us on an all-new episode of Discolgist as we dig into one of the most important albums of 2020 from one of the fiercest jazz outfits in history. We’re part of the Osiris podcast network.
