In the late 70s, Scot Nicol, was a young hippie living on the coast in Mendocino County (CA), when an article appeared about this new “Clunker Bike” movement happening in Marin County, CA and Crested Butte. A handful of guys were essentially retrofitting old Scwhinn bikes to ride on the dirt. Scot reached out to these kindred spirits (now cycling legends: Joe Breeze, Gary Fisher and Charlie Kelly among others) and, basically, they collectively invented what we now know as mountain bikes. It will be 40 years ago this April Fools day that Scot, AKA Chuck Ibis, launched IbisCycles.com without money or a plan. Today, his bikes are considered some of the most sophisticated and coveted ever built, with a waiting list over a year long. Nicol always found a way to turn bikes into art, pioneering a “function follows form” philosophy that has made believers out of everyone lucky enough to ride one of his creations. Inducted into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame, and beloved worldwide in the passionate world of riding, Scot still rides every day and defines the idea of turning avocation into vocation. He also happens to be one of Swan Dive's host, Stuart Sheldon's dear friends and favorite people on the planet.

Mike Sinyard is the founder and chairman of Specialized Bicycle Components, an American manufacturer of bicycles with a cult following. In 1974, at the age of 24, Mike Sinyard began putting bikes together from Italian components he imported. He ran an import service, providing these sought after parts to California bike shops. Soon, mountain bikes became more common, but the choice was either a custom built, racey bike or a heavy rebuilt klunker. He knew he could build a viable bicycle for less than custom bikes cost, and thus the Specialized Stumpjumper was born in 1981. Sinyard was inducted to the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame in 1988. The StumpJumper mountain bike was added to the Smithsonian National Museum of American History's collection in 1994. He was profiled in the 2007 documentary film Klunkerz: A Film About Mountain Bikes. There are people who run and/or cycle, and then there are runners and cyclists. There are runners and cyclists, and then there are racers of those two demanding sports. There are racers running and cycling who are competitive, and then there are those racers who win. There are racers who win, and then there are those successful athletes who are desirable by sponsors and news cameras. There are some of those winning desirable racers who are wired differently, doing shit most people would never attempt. I am talking about ultra-athletes.There are ultra-athletes, and then there is John Stamstad.John and I have known each other for over 25 years and here in episode #10, we both jump straight into the conversation about the huge life issues in each other’s lives that we both share: Depression, addiction, using athletics to help counter-balance our addictions, twice divorced, parenting through both said divorces, fascination with psychology and how our athletic bodies work, a multitude of major injuries and several brushes with death out there doing adventuring, our love for winter sports, and much more. John addresses his addictions, his philosophy on remaining realistic with our goal setting, his scariest moments, and much more. John gets brutally honest and shares details of his life that most people would normally hide from public view, but not John Stamstad. It is a brutally honest talk with the OG of Adventure Sports. Pioneering sponsorship for adventure sports more than 20 years ago, thousands of athletes and adventurers around the world have John Stamstad to thanks for laying the foundation for some of the paychecks they receive today. John’s credentials are too numerous to list but here are a few highlights:Running on foot, John covered the entire 200-mile John Muir Trail which goes through Yosemite, unsupported. John has twice run the UTMB, an ultramarathon race in Chamonix, France up and around the highest mountain in western Europe. John ran 100 miles, unsupported, on the White Rim Trail in Utah, pushing a Baby Jogger full of drinking water so he did not end up as a snack for the desert buzzards lurking overhead. On his bicycle, John’s adventures and accomplishments dwarf his running career:John rode his mountain bike 3,500-miles off-road across the Australian continent including straight through the famous Aussie Outback, just for the challenge of it; one hell of a challenge. In 1999, John decided oh what the heck, why not ride his mountain bike the entire length of the Great Divide Trail that follows the Continental Divide from Banff, Canada to the Mexican border in New Mexico. And while that didn’t seem to be enough of a challenge, John decided to set an aggressive goal of how fast he thought he could do it and keep time for the entire 2,500 miles of challenging mountain trails. This Great Divide challenge that John cooked up would lay the groundwork for the duplicated timed ultra-challenge that still thrives today. And oh yeah, of course, there is the little fact that John in the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame. For me, this is the holy shit sentence: John has won the Iditasport bike race in Alaska 8 times. Holy hell. And much more. This dude John Stamstad, a great man, a fascinating human, and an athlete I consider to be in a class by himself. John is now writing a book, hoping to be done in spring 2021. Please tune in to hear the story.

“WIth an electric bike, it reduces the barriers of distance, of speed..electric bikes just give you a little boost and make the bike a more viable solution.” - Jenn Dice Bikes can be a great solution to your common car commuting woes. Whether it’s a traditional bike, or the up and coming e-bike, they certainly clean up the commute for many of us out there. Did you know about the PeopleForBikes community, who actually look out for your biking rights, and ensure you get to keep the rights that make it so fun? For us outdoor enthusiasts, we may not realize all the work that goes into getting our amazing gear. Jenn Dice joins us to discuss PeopleForBikes, a community of bikers housing over 1.3 million members. Jenn is the VP of PeopleForBikes, a company that unites millions of individuals and hundreds of communities making it easier to ride! Prior to that, she worked at the International Mountain Biking Association for 10 years doing government affairs. She’s been helping the outdoor industry for many many years, even being inducted into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame as of September 2014! Bulletpoints PeopleForBikes works to make every bike ride better by getting more people riding, more often! Jenn started at PeopleForBikes four years ago! PeopleForBikes has around 1.3 million members at the moment. P4B is for everybody, enabling all types of riders, providing more access. Everyone is welcome. The biggest area P4B has been active in, in the state and local arena, is electric bikes. There are 770,000 jobs in the biking industry alone. An electric bike is just like a regular bike, with a boost. There are three different classes for the electric bikes. E-bikes appeal to an older crowd as well, who may have issues riding regular bikes. E-bikes are a great solution to commuting. There were plenty bad bike bills in the year 2016, including one that proposed a required license and registration! 99 times out of 100 PeopleForBikes kill bad bike bills. PeopleForBikes coalition has a “dues paying” team of around $200,000. Get involved in advocacy! What can you do locally for cycling? There’s a lot of overlap between tech and bikes.
