There are guests whose stories are filled with incredible achievements. And then there are guests whose stories crack you open—with their heart, their humility, and their humanity.Today's guest, Rebecca Rusch, is all of the above.Rebecca is one of the world's most extraordinary endurance athletes—a 7-time World Champion, mountain bike hall-of-famer, best-selling author, Emmy Award winner, and activist. She has not only pushed herself to the physical edge through rock climbing, whitewater rafting, and multi-day adventure races like Eco-Challenge—she has also traveled to the emotional core of what it means to live fully, love deeply, and be good. You may know her from the acclaimed documentary Blood Road, which follows Rebecca's 1,800-kilometer mountain bike journey along the Ho Chi Minh Trail to locate the site where her father's plane went down during the Vietnam War. That quest wasn't just about closure—it was about connection, healing, and honoring the man who shaped her spirit. In this deeply moving episode of the Cracking Open podcast, we explore:✨ How the loss of her father at a young age ignited a lifelong search for meaning✨ What growing up with a single, hard-working mom taught her about strength and self-reliance✨ The power of curiosity, nature, and endurance to reveal who we really are✨ How a traumatic brain injury forced her to slow down—and reimagine what success looks like✨ Why “being good” matters so much more than being perfectWhat we didn't know when we scheduled this conversation was that Rebecca's beloved mom would pass away just one week before we recorded. And so what unfolds in this episode is not just an interview—it's a powerful reflection on how we live, how we love, and how we show up for the people who matter most.Rebecca's story is one of grit, grace, and growth. And at the heart of it all is a simple message from her father, who signed every letter home from Vietnam with the same two words: Be Good. It's a mantra that continues to guide her—and now, maybe, it will guide you too.

A head injury like concussion can fundamentally change you–especially if you have prolonged post-concussive symptoms, which can upend your life and sense of self for months, and sometimes years. Head injuries are also traumatic and they can leave you vulnerable to reliving other past traumas that may have been long buried. That's where therapy comes in. Therapy can help you deal with your past and current trauma and importantly, put some new coping tools in your toolbox. As she struggled to cope with her lingering injury and depression, Rebecca pursued talk therapy and then later psychedelic-assisted therapy, both of which she credits with being pivotal turning points in her recovery. This episode takes a deep dive into her therapy experience, including insights from two of the therapists who helped guide her recovery. We also discuss the current state of psychedelic-assisted therapy, the FDA's recent non-approval decision, and what it means going forward.Rebecca Rusch is an adventure athlete, 7x World Champion, and 2x Hall of Fame inductee for mountain biking and gravel cycling. What do you do when you hit your head? That can be a hard question to answer. Even when people go to the doctor or ER, the actual advice can be thin, amounting to: take it easy and let your brain heal. Sometimes that works. But for nearly half of concussion sufferers, symptoms like depression, headaches, fatigue, and cognitive impairment can linger for months. And for some, like Rebecca, they can hang on for years. When that happens, people get desperate and start trying anything that friends, family, Google, or various health practitioners recommend, which is exactly what Rebecca did. In this episode, we follow Rebecca's desperate journey to resolve her persistent post-concussive symptoms. We also sat down with Dr. Alicia Trbovich, a neuropsychologist at the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program who studies the management of sport-related concussion and neuropsychological assessment following mild traumatic brain injury to talk about how experts are actively treating concussion and concussion symptoms today.Alicia Trbovich, PhD, presented on Domain Targeted Treatment and Rehabilitation Following Sport Related Concussion at the 12th Annual Sports Neuropsychology Society Symposium earlier this year. In this powerful and deeply personal episode, we sit down with Rebecca Rusch, a world-class athlete and Emmy winner, to explore her harrowing journey through what she calls her "Brain Storm" - a mild concussion that spiraled into a years-long struggle with invisible injury and recovery. Rebecca opens up about the bike crash that initially seemed like a minor setback but soon turned her world upside down. What was expected to be a brief recovery period stretched into months, then years, as she grappled with persistent symptoms that defied easy explanation or treatment. Throughout our conversation, Rebecca candidly shares the emotional toll of this prolonged recovery, touching on the isolation she felt and the challenges of dealing with an injury that others couldn't see or easily understand. As we delve deeper, Rebecca reveals her exploration of various healing modalities. From traditional rest and recovery methods to alternative treatments, including her experiences with psilocybin, she leaves no stone unturned in her quest for healing. This part of our discussion sheds light on the often-overlooked aspects of recovery and the lengths to which individuals may go when conventional methods fall short.A significant portion of our conversation centers on the unique pressures Rebecca faced as a public figure. She speaks honestly about the struggle to balance her public persona with her private battles, and the weight of expectations that came with her status as an elite athlete. Rebecca's decision to finally speak openly about her experience marks a turning point, not just in her personal journey, but in the broader conversation about concussions and invisible injuries. We also discuss the "Brain Storm" podcast series, a collaborative project with health expert Selene Yeager and Feisty Media, presented by Momentous. This four-part series aims to educate, raise awareness, and provide support for those dealing with concussions and their aftermath. Rebecca shares some startling statistics - nearly 30% of adults report having had a concussion in their lifetime, with almost half experiencing long-term symptoms. These numbers underscore the importance of the series and the need for better understanding and care in concussion treatment.Throughout the episode, we touch on insights from leading concussion experts, debunking outdated advice and shedding light on the current understanding of concussion science and treatment. Rebecca's journey highlights the challenges many face in finding quality, informed care, and the frustration of navigating recovery with limited guidance. As we wrap up, Rebecca reflects on the importance of breaking the silence around concussions and invisible injuries. Her powerful message resonates: while concussions may be invisible, they don't need to be suffered in silence. This episode serves as a call to action, encouraging listeners to seek proper care, share their experiences, and contribute to a more open and informed dialogue about brain health and recovery.Rebecca's story is one of resilience, discovery, and ultimately, hope. It's a testament to the human spirit and a beacon for others navigating their own storms, invisible or otherwise.Tune in to listen and don't forget to review the show!________________________About Rebecca RuschRebecca Rusch is a world-class explorer, professional athlete, acclaimed speaker and author who brings her wilderness wisdom to top trailblazers to reach the heights of human performance in leadership, business and life. On November 11th, 2021, on day three of a solo multi-day ride on Arizona's Coconino Trail, seven-time world champion adventure athlete Rebecca Rusch clipped her handlebars on a protruding rock, launching her from her bike and into a ravine 10 feet below, where she hit the ground with enough force to bounce multiple times, breaking her helmet and badly bruising her ribs. After self-rescuing off the trail, Rebecca did what pretty much everyone told her to do: rest up and recover. Her ribs mended. Her brain, which had clearly been concussed, didn't. Now, going on three years later, we revisit the crash, what she did in the immediate aftermath, and how experts are thinking about the acute phases of concussion recovery today.Rebecca Rusch is an adventure athlete, 7x World Champion, and 2x Hall of Fame inductee for mountain biking and gravel cycling. Throughout our conversation, you'll hear Rebecca's thoughts on how aiming for peak performance in physical activities motivates us to find our best version in other areas of our lives and how being a high-performance athlete impacted her leadership abilities. Rebecca Rusch is an ultra endurance adventure athlete, 7 x World Champion, MTB & Gravel Hall of Famer, author, activist and Emmy Award Winner. Rebecca Rusch grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and got into cross country running. In her first job out of college the office had an indoor climbing wall in the building. Rebecca was hooked and ventured across the country to climb. This opened doors to the outdoor community who got her into adventure racing leading to 10 years of adventuring racing and multiple victories in some of the world's biggest races. After a tragedy seeing a friend die in a race and sponsorship drying up Rebecca set a different path into bike riding.Friends invited her to 24 hours of Moab Bike Race and Rebecca recorded the fastest time of any women. She started doing solo MTB races and winning due to her endurance athlete mindset. This launched the second half of her career as a cyclist. She won 24 Hour World's a few times which bridged the gap between her adventure racing and love of exploring with a new venue of cycling. Rebecca continues to do a lot of bikepacking expeditions and events including Iditarod Trail 350 in Alaska becoming the first female finisher. We are excited to share our conversation with Pro Athlete Rebecca Rusch. Rebecca is a 7X World Champion, Mountain Bike & Gravel Cycling Hall of Famer, an Author, Emmy Award Winner for her documentary Blood Road, and founder of the Be Good Foundation . Her nickname is the Queen of Pain, because she has the ability to push though mental and physical barriers and come out stronger on the other side.  Rebecca is more than an athlete however.  She is an explorer and an adventurer. But what we most admire about Rebecca is her support of female athletes all over the world and her determination to change the cycling community to be more inclusive and more accessible, one bike ride at a time.  We talk about overcoming fear, finding your why, being curious, and Rebecca's navigational handrails. #begood Sponsor alert! 25% off at TheFeed.com with the code RACEGIRL www.rebeccarusch.com www.rebeccasprivateidaho.com www.thebegoodfoundation.org

This interview will go deep in to that journey and many of the other experiences that have made Rebecca an adventure and cycling hall of famer. Whether rock climbing, white water rafting, gravel racing or bikepacking, Rebecca has demonstrated time and again that she is the undisputed “Queen of Pain.” Four time winner of the Leadville 100, 24 hour solo mountain biking world champion, Emmy Award winner, multi-time Eco Challenge competitor, author, public speaker, and philanthropist—the list of her accomplishments is extensive, and she is far from retirement. In this conversation, she and Payson talk about using success as springboard for pursuing projects outside of cycling, and why it's important to her to keep pushing the boundaries of her sport alongside running her own charitable foundation Be Good. They talk about harnessing the surge in enthusiasm for the outdoors that the pandemic has created, and how she's changing the business plan for her popular gravel event, Rebecca's Private Idaho, to accommodate the changing landscape of mass participation events. They also talk about the whirlwind following her 2015 film, Blood Road, which documented her journey mountain biking the 1,200 miles of the Ho Chi Minh Trail in search of where her father had been shot down as a fighter pilot during the Vietnam War. The film won an Emmy and gained her an even wider audience, many of whom connected with the project through personal experience. Rebecca talks about the power of sharing her story, but also the moment she realized she needed to take a step back and refocus her attention on personal health and wellbeing. They also talk about what it feels like to have been inducted into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame before retiring, her 2021 goals, and the four "navigational handrails" she lives by.

We talk a lot about moderation. But how does that concept fit in the lives of elite athletes? Do they really practice moderation and balance? We could think of no better person to explore these concepts with than Rebecca Rusch. Not only has Rebecca maintained a dominating career as a professional athlete for over 30 years (to the tune of 7 World Championships and an induction into the Mountain Biking Hall of Fame), she has led an incredible charge as an ambassador and activist outside of racing. Her movie, Blood Road, won an Emmy and paved the way for her to reconnect with her community through philanthropy and creating her very own cycling event in her hometown of Ketchum, Idaho. If all of that isn't impressive enough, wait until you hear Rebecca's account of how she's come to find a deeper appreciation for human connection, using the bike as a catalyst. As she explains, all of those years of racing were preparing her for her greatest role: that of being the best version of herself for others. Episode 17 Rebecca Rusch In this episode Rebecca takes Cory and CJ on the journey from being a homeless climber to finding where she belongs, “a place where I could call home.” She walks us through her month long personal journey to visit the crash site of her father in Vietnam/Laos, who died as a pilot fighting in the Vietnam war, and how that experience ended up uncovering something much deeper. This story, documented in the Emmy winning documentary Blood Road, is about the scars, both physical and emotional, that war leaves on families, countries, and cultures, and how they still exist today. Rebecca is a thoughtful, kind, empathetic human. She describes her learning process during her career, making films, and in 2020. Highlights: Anger - how she has learned to process and be proactive. Instead of yelling and stomping about the things that get us riled up. And how long bike rides help Leadership - how the best seem to find the temperance and long term vision to make change happen. How changing habit is hard - but the process of change is necessary to make work “stick” Self discovery, discipline and the road to mastery How failure and pain are our teachers and we need them The “origin” stories we tell ourselves and how that can hold us back. The power of meditation and the answers within Bio: Author, athlete, public speaker, filmmaker, entrepreneur - Rebecca defies definition. She has spent 30 years chasing “firsts” – podiums, PRs, and championship titles, yes, but also has pioneered never-before-imagined adventures, destinations and projects that have challenged and shaped her personally and professionally. It’s this continual engagement with “what’s next” that has fueled her curiosity, satisfied her soul, fed her desire for growth, connection and change and grounded her in the belief that operating out of the comfort zone is the only way for us to evolve as humans, contribute to the greater good and enjoy the richness life can offer. She loves sharing the most enduring lessons she has learned along the way. She lives by the words from her father, “Be good.” Rebecca’s Instagram Rebecca’s Website: Blood Road

Meet Rebecca Rusch. Someone who has used her own life experiences to drive positive change in the world. Rebecca lives in a beautiful mountain town in Idaho. The outdoor world is her church. A multiple world champion and master of many sports, from mountain biking to white-water rafting, adventure racing and climbing, Rebecca was crowned the Queen of Pain by Adventure Sports magazine and was also in Outside Magazine's top 20 female athletes. Put simply, she’s a pro at suffering. Yet Rebecca is also a human being who, like all of us, struggles to get out the door for a ride or run some days. She puts herself out there in brutally tough races, and faces up to challenges and dilemmas shared by endurance athletes, whether its navigation or fighting through adverse weather. Her “why” is not to win at all costs, but a much deeper exploration of self and connection. Rebecca is a writer of beautiful stories about her lived experience; including through her memoir, Rusch to Glory, and a brilliant TEDx talk. Last year, she launched an award-winning documentary film called Blood Road, which follows her 1,200 mile journey deep into the jungles of Vietnam and Laos, along a trail littered with unexploded bombs, to find the spot where her father was shot down in the Vietnam War. Our conversation covers goal-setting during Covid-19 lockdown, self-compassion in racing, Rebecca's pre-lockdown experience at the Iditarod Trail Invitational, her evolving relationship with suffering, those life-changing days on the Ho Chi Minh trail, grief and finding new purpose from her father's death, through her Foundation.

She’s also an entrepreneur, author and has her own world-class gravel race, Rebecca’s Private Idaho. In 2016 she was the first person to ride the entire length of the Ho Chi Minh trail. That trip was captured in the feature-length documentary Blood Road. It tells the story of Rebecca’s journey to try to reach the crash site and final resting place of her father, a U.S. Air Force pilot shot down over Laos during the Vietnam war, 40 years later on the anniversary of his death.  I’ve written about Rebecca before as a journalist and have had the chance to hang out with her a few times at gravel events and at SXSW where we both spoke a few years back. She’s not just one of the most accomplished endurance athletes in all of sport--she’s an incredibly humble and thoughtful person. My dad also served in Vietnam. He came back alive. Watching Blood Road truly moved me on many levels, and after I saw it, I knew I wanted to explore the film and the impact that the process had on Rebecca. First of all, at the time of this upload it is officially the spooky season, Happy October everyone. Secondly, I would like to thank everyone who listened to the first episode and reached out to me sharing similar stories. You’re never alone in this strange universe. Thirdly We are live on twitter @ StrangeHeartPod and Instagram @ StrangeHeartland I have a good friend of mine, Bree helping me with social media pretty soon,  so be on the lookout for much more content. Fourth and Lastly my guest and I kinda went off on tangents later on in the episode about another famously haunted road in our neck of the woods and about my experiences working at a radio station in a building that once was a steam power plant. Travel through rural Indiana and you can find any number of sleepy backroads. Once heavily traveled every day they have fallen dormant and have taken on new life as the center of urban legends and favorite haunts of local kids looking for a good scare. My guest tonight, Garrett, like so many others during the years took a trip down County road 700 in Dunkirk, Indiana hoping to catch a glimpse of the paranormal. What he saw still sends chills down his spine and the hair to stand up on his neck. This is his Strange Heartland Story

Rebecca Rusch has a nickname: The Queen of Pain, which she earned … well, you’ll have to listen to learn that. Reba was a climber before she began adventure racing, which was before she started riding a mountain bike—something she did formally at 38 years of age. Quickly thereafter she won the Leadville 100 (and did so again three more times), then won the 24-hour solo, and 24-hour team mountain bike world championship title three times each, respectively. So much for the short stuff. Three years ago she rode the length of the Ho Chi Minh Trail (1200 miles) to the site where her father was shot down during the Vietnam War, a journey about which Red Bull made a documentary titled, “Blood Road”. She works locally and internationally as an advocate for cycling, organizes cycling camps, and a number of races the most notorious of which is Rebecca’s Private Idaho, and now the Queen’s Stage Race that includes the RPI event as the third stage. She appears tireless, motivated, and relentlessly optimistic—all characteristics we discussed during this episode.

Rebecca’s Wild Idea: To encourage others to take risks, push themselves physically and mentally, and get everyone in the world on a bike. Today we welcome back Rebecca Rusch, this show’s first repeat guest. Rebecca has been called a modern day wonder woman and the queen of pain for her ability to not only withstand harsh conditions in endurance racing, but for her well-versed career. She has been a pro athlete for over three decades. She’s a seven-time world champion, author, philanthropist, and she’s shattered the glass ceiling in everything she’s done from finishing ahead of every guy in major mountain bike races, becoming a fire fighter, breaking records, and winning major adventure and endurance mountain bike races. Since we last spoke, Rebecca was on tour with the feature film Blood Road, which follows her journey along the 1200km Ho Chi Minh Trail to find the site of her father’s plane crash during the Vietnam War. This year, Rebecca is about to celebrate her 50th birthday, and she’s had some time to reflect back on her life. We get deep into her philosophy about how to pave your own path in life and how to make it in a career without a clear road map. We also dive deep into taking risks, how she trains her body, and most importantly how she trains her mind. She also shares tips and science she’s learned from the Red Bull coaches. Listen to this episode if:  You love biking, any kind. You want to take more risks in life. You are interested in pushing your body or your mind. You want to hear from a badass athlete and get motivated. For full show notes, including guest links and books mentioned during the episode, visit: http://wildideasworthliving.com/rebecca-rusch

Rebecca Rusch’s bio says that Rebecca is 'the queen of pain with a heart of gold'.    Well, that sums up everything you need to know about this 30 year professional athlete. But if you’re into details, Rebecca is a 7x World Champion in multiple sports, 4x Leadville 100 mtb champion, 3x winner of the Dirty Kanza 200, she summited Mt. Kilamanjaro by bike, holds the record for the fastest ride on the Kokapelli trail, and was recently the first person to ride the entire length of the Ho Chi Min trail which you absolutely need to see for yourself in her inspiring movie Blood Road. But, beyond all that, what I admire most about Rebecca is her unwavering belief in the power of the bicycle to bring out the best in people and communities... and her dedication to bringing new people into the tribe of bikes. Rebecca Rusch is one of the most prolific adventure athletes out there.  From first ascents as a rock climber (El Capitan in Yosemite) to kayaking in the Grand Canyon to taking her bike up Mount Kiliminjaro, nothing stops the Queen of Pain.  Rebecca was one of the top Adventure Racers before becoming a pro mountain biker and is the 7x World Champion in several sports.   Rebecca's depth goes far beyond her athletic endeavors.  She's a speaker, author of her book Rusch to Glory, a filmmaker with her most recent film Blood Road, and an event producer with Rebecca's Private Idaho.  Her palmares and activities are so vast that I highly recommend checking out her website for more!  This is a fun episode of the show because we talk about so many interesting topics.  Rebecca's father was shot down in the Vietnam War when she was just a young girl.  Haunted by the unknown and not knowing exactly what happened to her father, she decided to go find him.  Rebecca rode the entire 1,200 miles of the Ho Chi Minh trail with Vietnamese riding partner, Huyen Nguyen.  They picked up clues along the way and Rebecca plugged in to Vietnamese culture in a big way.  So much so that she is currently on her way to Laos to lead a guided ride and sells bracelets made of unexploded bombs.  The money is donated to remove more of these unexploded bombs.  Watch the Blood Road film here. We also talk about core values, vulnerability, and pivot points in her career.  I hope you enjoy listening to this episode as much as I did!  Listen Now   Topics Discussed in the Podcast  Dynamic career and career pivot points Core values What racing means Risk taking and the unknown Female athlete, tools used in her career Blood road process/filming/Vietnam vulnerability Links Rebecca's Website Blood Road Film Be Good Bracelet Rebecca's Book: Rusch to Glory Support the Show If you like my show, I'm aiming to make it an ad-free zone using crowdfunding to support it.  All donations will go directly to the production of the show. Rebecca Rusch is called the "Queen of Pain" for a reason. She's a three-time world champion in the 24-Hour Mountain Bike race, the 2011 National XC single-speed champion, and she's won the Leadville 100 mountain bike race four times. But a couple years ago, Rusch decided to take on an entirely new kind of pain. It would involve an epic ride along the Ho Chi Minh trail to find the crash site where her father, a U.S. Air Force pilot, was shot down when she was just three years old. Her emotional journey is the subject of a new documentary called Blood Road. Rusch met up with XX Factor host Florence Williams at the Telluride Mountainfilm festival to explain why this was the hardest ride of her life.

Rebecca’s Wild Idea: To be a professional adventure racer and bike the Ho Chi Minh Trail in search of her father, who was shot down as a fighter pilot in the Vietnam War. Rebecca Rusch has been a professional athlete for over three decades. She is a seven-time World Champion who continues to shatter the glass ceiling in whatever sport she tackles, whether it is climbing, rafting, or biking. She has a first female ascent rock climbing El Capitan in Yosemite. She has river boarded down the Grand Canyon. And she has beaten most men at endurance mountain bike racing.  Rebecca’s most recent journey goes much deeper. She biked 1,200 miles along the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Southeast Asia to search for the crash site of her father’s plane where he was shot down in the Vietnam War over 40 years ago. She shared the journey with another mountain biker, a local Vietnamese woman, and they documented it all in an epic film by Red Bull Media House called Blood Road that just hit theaters. Listen to this episode if:  You love adventure, adventure racing or know of Rebecca Rush. You know someone who was in or affected by the Vietnam War. You have ever wanted to do an epic adventure.
