On the eve of Matty's big race (update: HE DID IT), the guys discuss Matt's attempt to lower his resting heart rate; reflect on the first *real* coolship fill of the year during the night prior; and call for more mailbag drops, guest recs, and REVIEWS before providing the results of the last solo episode's BIG CHALLENGE -- if ya know ya know, and if you don't you should write a review; Listening will be required regardless. We also tackle a handful of mailbag heaters before debuting a new segment for the attention-challenged beer lovers among us: THE CHAFF BUCKET ...? (Husk Heap? Chaftache?) Working title, but will be all about snack-sized questions, comments, and the like that proved to be a ton of fun. A "Multitrack" of an episode if there ever was one...and it's available EVERYWHERE you can find podcasts! (You'll have to go elsewhere for Matt's "13.1 - I RUN!" Christmas bumper sticker)........... ................... ................... ............... ......... Music: "Mountain Climb" by Jake Hill

Scott, Karl, and Trent introduce us to the genius of Les Paul. Best known for the solid-body electric guitar, Les Paul was a prolific inventor and tinkerer. He also developed many of the techniques that formed the backbone of modern music recording, including multitracking, overdubbing, and tape effects. Scott says, "He's an interesting kind of genius because of the way it all came about." Les Paul will always hold a special place in the pantheon of American musical greats. Recording with each voice on a seperate audio track makes your life so much easier when editing your show. Find out why. I used a new recording setup today. My first recording (for this show) using a laptop and external mic. It turned out a little to much bass. I've been recording with a phone for so long that my mic skills are rusty! PRODUCTION NOTES Mic: Samson Q2U with USB connection Recording Device: Dell G7 Laptop Recording Software: Audacity Recording location: Dining room at my dining table. With my laptop behind my mic to minimize the noise from my hard-drive and laptop fan. Recording format: 16 bit WAV file Samplerate: 44100Hz Editing app: Audacity Sound Treatment: Auphonic Productions at Auphonic.com Auphonic.com settings [to output as a 16bit mono WAV file]: Adaptive Leveler (on), Loudness Normalization (Loudness Target -19 LUFS ), Filtering (on), Noise and Hum Reduction (Reduction Amount: Auto), Sample rate: 44.1kHz I uploaded the resulting WAV file to Anchor.fm to host the file and added the music from their free music stock. Anchor automatically converts the WAV file into a 128kbps .m4a file

With genuine, sincere apologies to J.D. Crowe, perhaps my favorite Bluegrass banjo player, this is a clawhammer/frailing (!) version my favorite Bluegrass tune, "Blackjack," and in the key of G no less (!). Multitrack recording where I'm playing clawhammer banjo (Pisgah Woodchuck standard G tuning), guitar, bass (marimbula), and a few fiddle chops. All the instruments "kick in" after the first go round.

A very short episode today, but how I use Dante to record MultiTrack.
Finally back with another episode. It's been literally YEARS! Sorry about that, life gets in the way. Finishing what I started with my "making of" series. This is album 4 of 5 so we're almost done with this series. The last and final episode of this "making of" series will hopefully be coming soon. Thanks for listening!
Medley of June Apple, Red Haired Boy, Old Joe Clark, McDonald County. Multitrack recording where I'm playing a no frills 11" open back Deering Goodtime banjo (G tuning capoed up to A), guitar, bass (Michael Allen-made marimbula), light hammered dulcimer (MIchael Allen). Nothing fancy; just basic frailing, lots of hammer offs and ons, not a single drop thumb or double thumb anywhere. Key of A.
