To begin our dive into some of the mythology of the sexual instinct, Sammy presents a dream she's had on this journey so far. It has a strange connection with the story of Hephaestus, so we discuss the similarities and differences, and how it all relates to Sammy's process and the sexual instinct itself. Sammy's story mirrors Hephaestus, going all the way back to her birth and the medicine the dream could be giving her now. We talk about how this myth is alive today in the collective, and therefore operating in each of us somewhere individually. The trouble of accessing creativity, the building of resentment and pain, the archetypes hiding under our own complexes, and other topics start to unfold in this conversation.  The book we are referencing from in this podcast is The Principle of Individuation by Murray Stein. As a matter of fact, their caramel chews were amongst my favorite new products I tried in 2022. Interview begins @ 4:43 The Red Book, also known as Liber Novus, is a manuscript created by Carl Jung between 1914 and 1930. It is a highly personal and symbolic work that documents Jung's exploration of his own psyche through active imagination and dream analysis. The book contains a wealth of material, including paintings and calligraphy, that Jung created as part of his self-exploration, and it is considered to be one of the most important works of Jung's career. The Red Book was not published during Jung's lifetime, but it was eventually edited and published posthumously in 2009. In this episode, Dr. Murray Stein and John discuss the impact of Liber Novus on the study of depth psychology and religion. We begin by exploring the anthology, Jung's Red Book for Our Time: Searching for Soul under Postmodern Conditions, created and edited by today's participant, Dr. Stein, and physicist, Dr. Thomas Arzt, who organized over seventy essays contributed to the process by various writers in the community of analytical psychology. We continue with the nature of Jung's suffering expressed through the process of active imagination, we discuss what Liber Novus has done for the Jungian field, and we continue by identifying the practice of active imagination as the key method for self-knowledge, psychedelics and the unconscious, the ethical obligation following an encounter with the unconscious – whether through dream work, active imagination, psychedelics, incubation, or any other ecstatic experience - depth psychology, the rational and irrational, alchemy and the unconscious, Dr. Stein explains the process of active imagination, mysteries traditions, Orphic tradition, subtle bodies and synchronicity, the encounter with Soul, and integrating the inferior function. According to Pornhub data, Australia ranks 7th in the world for porn consumption. With data from other sources suggesting the average age of first consumption of porn is nine, it's easy to see why porn use has become a contentious issue. So what gives porn its allure? What makes watching specific videos enticing? In light of what porn has the potential to reveal about human nature, can porn ever be merely entertainment? Today, to help explore what our porn use says about individuals and culture more generally is Giorgio Tricarico. Giorgio is a clinical psychologist and a Jungian analyst, and a member of the International Association for Analytical Psychology. He is the author of Lost Goddesses: A Kaleidoscope on Porn.Giorgio argues porn is a complex symbol of our current world and a shining example of Jung's idea of the 'Shadow' of the Western culture. While many books essentially show its negative sides; the risks of addiction and the danger of damaging the relationship between sexes, Giorgio's work focuses on porn as a phenomenon of our times, exploring its many colours, trying to capture its inner logic and essence. Giorgio and Caroline discuss the social ideas that enabled the proliferation of mass internet porn, what our preferences and proclivities say about our psyches, and what Carl Jung's idea of ‘Shadow' has to contribute here. They also discuss what divinity and porn have in common, and the deeper layers of human experience that could be driving porn use. Resources:Giorgio's work, Lost Goddesses: A Kaleidoscope on Porn. For this reflection, I invited back three Jungian scholars with whom I had spoken individually on previous episodes. Our discussion together was an opening both of insights and questions:* When we speak of dreaming the Christian myth forward, as Jung did, whose dream do we mean? Who's doing the dreaming?* Is Jung's psychological project an attempt to transcend or reform Christianity?* What might Jung's psychologizing of Christian tradition mean for those within and outside it? * In Jungian discourse, where is the body of Christ? In our first episode, Dr. Murray Stein spoke of Jung's vision that a new religion will take form in about six hundred years. The context for this statement is a dream that Berliner Jungian analyst Max Zeller (who later emigrated to Los Angeles) shared with C.G Jung when they met in Zurich in 1949. In this bonus material of that episode Stein shares this story and comments on it. It was first published in Psychological perspectives, 1975 (The journal of the Jung Institute of Los Angeles).Subscribe on Youtube

You know, the reason I became an analyst—I was ordained as a minister—and it wasn't that I lost my faith, or went sour on the Christian ministry. It was because I felt that Jungian psychology went deeper into the source of people's needs and problems. And as an analyst, I could go there with them.Episode description: Dr. Murray Stein is a renowned Jungian psychoanalyst and the author of important books such as ‘Jung's treatment of Christianity' and ‘Map of the Soul'. Dr. Stein is perhaps the Jungian who has delved the deepest into C.G Jung and his relation to the Christian tradition. In this episode, he sheds light on Jung's rendering of Christianity through his psychological project. He helps us understand how Jungs' psychology is rooted in the tradition of Protestantism, expands on Jungs' idea of “the invisible church”, and Jung's relationship to Jesus. Dr. Stein also generously shares stories from his own life, as well as anecdotes of Jung himself. For instance, you will hear the story of how Jung himself his whole life walked around with a bible in his pocket and how to live one's life at the center of the cross.Subscribe on YoutubeMusic played in this episode: Licensed under creativecommons.org: 'Ketsa - No light without Darkness', 'Siddhartha Corsus - Constellations.'

Recorded just as the polls closed during the runoff elections in Georgia, USA, we bring back Dr. Nathan Schwartz-Salant for his insightful take on how an individual must stand one's ground during times of chaos and uncertainty. The late Dr. Nathan Schwartz-Salant, a prominent Jungian analyst, in this interview from February 8, 2020, on the eve of the New Hampshire primaries, offers a way for us to 'stand our ground' during these uncertain times, how to embrace the darkness of the collective psyche. His insight and analysis is perfect for Dr. Schwartz-Salant is a member of the International Association for Analytical Psychology {IAAP} and has been practicing as a Jungian analyst for almost fifty years. His first book, Narcissism and Character Transformation: The Psychology of Narcissistic Character Disorders, published by Inner City Books in 1982, is a classic in the Jungian field. Recently, he contributed the chapter "Healthy Presidential Narcissism: Is That Possible?" for the popular book, A Clear and Present Danger: Narcissism in the Era of Donald Trump, that came out during the 2016 presidential campaign.Thank you to Dr. Schwartz-Salant for your incredible insight and advice to those finding themselves at dis-ease during these maddening times. We begin our conversation with Dr. Stein explaining initiation and “The Spirit of the Depths,” as the dance between reason and the inevitable call that each of us hears from our soul – that unique part of us that is outside of culture. Dr. Stein differentiates between directed thinking and nondirected thinking – causality-based, rational thinking and the spontaneous emergence of images that seem to come from beyond our conscious control. The former helps each of us “get from A to B,” while the latter operates with imagination as the presenter of the subjective content. He locates the consequence of the growth of rational thinking, as pushing out the relationship we each have with the symbol and the imagination. Noting that this produced a materially dominant culture, although the sacrifice is our disconnection from the immaterial. We conclude by discussing the tension of opposites. Bio: Dr. Stein is a graduate of Yale University (B.A. and M.Div.), the University of Chicago (Ph.D.), and the C.G. Jung Institut-Zurich (Diploma). He is a founding member of the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts and of the Chicago Society of Jungian Analysts. He has been the president of the International Association for Analytical Psychology (2001-4), and the President of The International School of Analytical Psychology-Zurich (2008-2012). http://murraystein.com Theme music provided by: http://www.modernnationsmusic.com Band of the week: Halou http://www.halou.com Music page: https://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/halou/2602748 Learn more about this project at: http://www.thesacredspeaks.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thesacredspeaks/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/thesacredspeaks Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thesacredspeaks/

JUNG PODCAST #31 - JUNGIAN ANALYSIS 2In this episode I continue with Murray Stein's quote on analysis; I examine issues such as frequency and length of session, couch vs. chair."Jungian analysis, which takes place in a dialectical relationship between analyst and analysand, has for its goal the analysand's movement toward psychological wholeness. This transformation of the personality requires coming to terms with the unconscious, its specific structures and their dynamic relations to consciousness as these become available during the course of analysis. Transformation also depends upon the significant modification of the unconscious structures that shape and control ego-consciousness at the beginning of analysis, a change that takes place through the constellation of archetypal structures and dynamics in the interactive field between analyst and analysand" (Stein, 1995, p. 33).

JUNG PODCAST#30 - ANALYSIS 1In this episode I begin to discuss the central idea of the practice of Analytical Psychology, that of Jungian Analysis. Before I delve into the topic, I discuss why people come to analysis, and what happens in the first hour. I focus on Murray Stein's definition of analysis : “Jungian psychotherapists hold the notion of psychological development, of ‘stages of life', and we ask ourselves questions about the levels of psychological development demonstrated in the narratives offered by the people who come to us. Does a person's discourse show a good match, we wonder for instance, between chronological age and psychological attitudes? The full clinical impression of a person's level or degree of psychological development takes many sessions and much observation to formulate in depth and detail. It is an estimate of their achieved individuation. Individuation is a term used to indicate a person's potential for full psychological development. In its simplest formula, individuation is the capacity for a wholeness and evolved consciousness. The aim of analysis is to increase and to promote individuation in patients.” (Stein, 2006, p197)

JUNG PODCAST #27 IN INDIVIDUATION 2In this episode I continue with the material on individuation. I examine the early use by Jung of the term 'Individuation', then work through some of the issues of Jung's conceptualization of the personality in terms of the first and second halves of life. The latter part of the episode begins with the first of three stages of individuation as conceptualized by Murray Stein - the containing/nurturing stage.

Seminar author Murray Stein from the University of California San Diego, USA, discusses social anxiety disorder, also known as social phobia, in this week's podcast. While causes remain uncertain, diagnosis and treatment are relatively straightforward, although the disorder needs greater awareness among the estimated 5% of the population who experience social anxiety, and among physicians who can help treat the condition.
