The aborted attempt, by the world's richest football clubs, to form a European Super League appears to be another salutary lesson in the self-defeating nature of greed. But, does greed always lead to the death of the goose that laid the golden eggs? We start this podcast by examining the decision-making of the various football clubs involved in trying to establish the European Super League, asking whether it was flawed. We then look at the pros and cons of greed as a driver of behaviour. Finally, we attempt to identify where greed tends to go wrong, and what we might do to harness the energy created by greed, while avoiding its pitfalls. A few things we mentioned in this podcast: - European Super League https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/56795811 - Manchester United Business Model https://ir.manutd.com/company-information/business-model.aspx#:~:text=Within%20the%20Commercial%20revenue%20sector,licensing%3B%20and%20mobile%20%26%20content - Is Greed Good? In our first foray into the 1990s, journalist and podcaster Laura Kelly from The Big Issue joins us on the carousel and takes us back to the Smash Hits of 1-14 April 1992. And it's a very different Smash Hits from what we've covered so far on the podcast, with TV and film stars getting as much attention as pop stars. We're also introduced to a raft of new features including 'No! Not The Biscuit Tin!' and Sylvia Patterson steals the show with her glorious feature on the Manic Street Preachers. Laura tells us about the life-changing impact that piece had on her as a 10-year old music fan growing up in Belfast. *Disclaimer: Any positive opinions about Right Said Fred were made before they brought shame on Ver Hits family. Elijah Cummings and discuss the importance of getting informed, voting, and supporting candidates in challenging races around the country. After one year for patrons only, the fourth Myth of the Month becomes free for the public: Do societies become more "secular" as they become modern? Do science, technology, or democracy weaken religious belief? We consider theories of secularization ranging from Max Weber's story of "disenchantment" to Charles Taylor's "A Secular Age." Current survey data show a dramatic rise in the number of "nones" -- those who do not adhere to any particular religious group, even though most of them still pray, read scriptures, or express belief in God. For this episode, Graham and Nick talk about focus and focusing mechanisms in cameras. Nick asks whether focusing is necessary and Graham talks about one of his favorite Flickr people, ChetBak59 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/129558209@N02) and his use of out-of-focus areas of images to great effect (9:15). Nick challenges Graham to take a photograph where the out-of-focus areas is the point of interest and the in-focus areas are secondary (14:58). At 16:00 the boys finally get to the definition of focus and how the lens creates this focus on a film plane or sensor. They then talk about the different methods to adjust focus in a camera-lens system (26:41). They also talk about how focus is verified so we get the result that is expected (38:25). With all that silliness about focusing complete, talk turns to a camera Graham built over the previous week, the Sixty7 Woody (1:10:30) Nick’s books this week are: CAMERAS From Daguerreotypes to Instant Pictures by Brian Coe (https://www.amazon.com/CAMERAS-Daguerreotypes-Instant-Pictures-Brian/dp/0517533812) 500 Cameras: 170 Years of Photographic Innovation by George Eastman House, Todd Gustavson (https://www.amazon.com/500-Cameras-Years-Photographic-Innovation/dp/1402780869/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1532023200&sr=1-1&keywords=500+cameras) Collecting and Using Classic Cameras By Ivor Matanle (https://www.amazon.com/Collecting-Using-Classic-Cameras-Matanle/dp/0500276560/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1532023493&sr=1-1&keywords=collecting+and+using+classic+cameras) Graham’s shout-outs go to Chetbak59 on Flickr (see link above) and moonchild1111 also on Flickr (https://www.flickr.com/photos/moonchild1111/)

Seattle Mayor Ed Murray unveiled his 2017 budget this week amid the chants of protesters outside of Seattle City Council chambers. The Mayor’s budget places an emphasis on the hiring of more police officers, the shortage of affordable housing, and the homelessness crisis. KCTS 9’s Enrique Cerna breaks down the Mayor’s budget with Crosscut.com’s City Reporter David Kroman, who describes the atmosphere in the council chambers as tense.
