Should Jenna broaden her horizons by moving away for medical school? Photo by merra marie [This episode is sponsored by Panacea Financial, a Division of Sonabank, Member FDIC. Please support our sponsor by visiting https://panaceafinancial.com/] Listener Jenna got into Carver College of Medicine! But she's worried–should she go to a new place to study medicine instead, or should she stay in comfy, cozy Iowa City where she's been the last few years? Sit tight, Jenna, because M1 Lola Lozano (Texas), M1 Albert Pedroza (Nebraska), MD/PhD student Aline Sandouk (lots of places) and M1 Nicole Hines (Iowa) are here to look at the options with you! Bun Bun writes in to complain about what they saw as our unfair treatment of Ivy League schools…although, if they'd listened verrrrry carefully, they'd see that's not something we actually did. Dave loses his cool about the pandemic complainers. Yes, it's frustrating to have to stay home and avoid family over the holidays. But this is war. And yet…he immediately proves the point by forgetting you can't play the Whisper Challenge without a mask on. So the crew braces themselves against the disappointment–damn you, COVID!–and soldier on. Photo by brianna.lehman Listener Soma let us know that the AAMC has released an interview app for medical schools to collect videos of applicants answers to some standard questions. Their website says the tool addresses the needs expressed by its member schools during the upcoming interview season. Soma wondered, what do we think? Of course, that no matter what we think, it seems like applicants will probably have to do it anyway. But M2s Mariam Mansour, Greta Becker, Kayla Kruse and Nikitha Pothireddy are on hand to consider. Hmm…what DO we think of a new item for applicants to put on their to-do list in order to apply to medical school? What DO we think of a set of what appear to be screening questions that could be asked in some other interview format, such as a live virtual interview? What DO we think of a tool which seems to add another item to med schools' to-do list? What DO we think of a tool which seems at a glance to be similar to another tool that was tried and cancelled for Emergency Medicine residency applications due to lack of interest from programs and applicants? Also, in light of a surge of COVID-19 cases that seem to be driven by young people eager to discard social distancing and masks to hang out with their buds in bars, we discuss the fairness of asking a screening question during interviews about whether the applicant has been doing the right thing to protect others. This Week in Medical News The first person to be treated for sickle cell disease with CRISPR in the US has gotten great news. On the other hand, investigators using fMRI to look at brain function have gotten some bad news. We Want to Hear From You Obviously, our discussion on questioning applicants on their bar-hopping habits might have other viewpoints we didn't cover. What did we miss? Panel: Charles Max Wood Guest: Nassredean Nasseri This week on My Ruby Story, Chuck talks with Dean who is a senior software engineer at VTS, Inc. in New York City. Dean uses Ruby and is an advocate for the software. He and Chuck discuss his background, current projects, and more! In particular, we dive pretty deep on: 1:00 – Dean: Hi, Everyone! 2:07 – Chuck: E363 of Ruby Rogues is your past episode. 1:13 – Dean: I am a Ruby developer and out in NY City. I have been developing Ruby for the past 6 years now. 1:42 – Chuck: What made you want to do something like Fir? 1:50 – Dean: I love developing developer tools and using something that I can use in my day-to-day work – I like that. I am constantly debugging and trying new things. That’s how I operate. I wanted to build a tool that would take the concepts that were missing from IRB and...put in a shell like FITCH. That was the motivation to that project. 2:42 – Chuck: Check out his past episode to get into the nitty gritty. Let’s roll back – how did you get into programming? 3:10 – Dean: I started programming in 2009/2010. I was a senior in High School and I wanted to make a social media website. I knew about HTML and other things but databases and servers I had no idea about. I downloaded WAMP – you familiar? It stands for: WINDOWS APACHE, MYSQL, and PHP. 4:19 – Chuck: What about programming that got you started? 4:27 – Dean: To build the thing that was in my head. My motivation was I wanted to see this THING to get built. I had a UI and I used jQuery. I got further and further; I realized that I was enjoying it. I liked the feeling and I spent 6 hours and I felt rewarded. 5:12 – Chuck: I played with programming as a younger person but in college I was introduced to...and I liked something coming together. Programming felt like a toy for me. I built a platform for people to find an apartment with their amenities that they wanted. It never came to light but it was fun to build. 6:00 – Dean. 6:12 – Chuck: I was a software consultant for a while. They spent 10’s of thousands of dollars on this project and me. You get into PHP and how did you come to Ruby? 6:40 – Dean: I didn’t study computer science in college. My friends who had a “background” and they said that I needed to use Python. Python held me back b/c of the 2 to 3 split and the server getting up on my machine b/c certain tendencies needed x, y, and z. That drove me away from Python but I did like the language. My friend told me to try Ruby and I read a book (Ruby on Rails by Michael, 2nd ed.) and I got Ruby. That was really cool to me. I went through the tutorial and that was powerful for me. Motto: Keep things fun and simple and then build on things later. 8:59 – Chuck: I hear people complain about Ruby. Can you still do that? 9:13 – Dean: Yes, I think so. The thing that stands out to me is action cable. Maybe a beginner doesn’t want to have to think about. Rails is the best way to get up and running with minimum friction. 9:45 – Chuck: I worked through a company and I was their tech support – so I can relate to that. This time around Nick and Graham discuss photographs they have taken and how they inform the cameras that they build and how the cameras that they build allow for photographs that are different from the ones they can take with off-the-shelf models. Nick’s photo is here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/51834204@N07/42317986574/in/dateposted/ Graham’s photo is here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/129971511@N04/41391598034/in/pool-3976524@N23/ Graham starts talking about his point and shoot sheet film camera that he designed and printed though to start he refers to it as a 2-1/4 by 2-1/4 when it is actually 2-1/4 by 3-1/4 (27:30). Nick’s build for this episode is the PinBlad Deluxe, a pinhole camera made from a Hasselblad and an Ilex No. 3 shutter (42:50). Project Save the Scameras from Graeme’s Hammer gets an update (52:00) with Graham’s project of putting an SLR lens on the front of his Olympia. This episode’s book is, The Complete Nikon System: An Illustrated Equipment Guide by Peter Braczko (https://www.amazon.com/Complete-Nikon-System-Illustrated-Equipment/dp/1883403855/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1536246746&sr=8-1&keywords=the+complete+nikon+system). Graham corrects a shoutout from the last episode where he gives credit to Panomicron on Instagram for building an XPan type of camera using 3D printing when he should have credited it to Cody (https://www.instagram.com/james__irvin/). It is still worth looking at Panomicron’s work too as he’s building some cool cameras (https://www.instagram.com/panomicron/). Graham was confused as one of Cody’s images appears in Panomicron’s timeline. Also, take the time to look at Ethan from Cameradactyl’s timeline on Instagram as he’s been doing some crazy-fun shit lately (https://www.instagram.com/cameradactyl/). Nick also mentions an image posted by Dirk Fletcher’s ultralight 4X5 camera on our Flickr feed: (https://www.flickr.com/photos/dirkfletcher/44439938251/in/pool-3976524@N23/) Nick also mentions Walker Cameras (http://www.walkercameras.com/) whose website is worth taking a look at.

The viewfinder and Scameras. Graham mentions a trip around St. Simons Island where he took a picture (https://www.flickr.com/photos/129971511@N04/36592696526/in/datetaken/) with a camera he hates that got 84,000 views on Flickr for some reason he cannot figure out (1:25) as he and Nick discuss cameras they don’t like. Neither of them likes the Minolta Weathermatic Dual.  Nick talks about issues with parallax in viewfinders (13:45) and the solutions to address the issue in cameras. Graham grabs a couple of cameras off his shelf to verify what Nick says. They take a moment to revel in Voigtlander fandom (20:05) and then get back to business. They move on to SLR through-the-lens viewfinders and their advantages and disadvantages (23:45) along with the advantages of the pentaprism on SLRs (29:30). Some viewfinders have very little information and some have an overload of information and this balance can affect the shooting experience (36:20). They discuss “viewfinder” cameras like the Trip 35, cameras with little or no information in the viewfinder (30:30).  Filter effects are discussed and how to use them without seeing the actual taking image (44:38). They eventually make their way to large format cameras and viewfinder issues with view finding (53:25). Finally, Nick and Graham start talking about how to make, adapt and scavenge your own viewfinders for homemade camera projects (1:02:54). They mention an article in 35MMC about salvaging a viewfinder from a broken camera (1:08:29) (https://www.35mmc.com/01/07/2018/35mm-accessory-viewfinder-budget-conscious-wonders-3d-printing/ With the subject of viewfinders completed, our fearless hosts moved on to poking the bear (Graeme of Sunny 16 Podcast) and his call for the smashing of all Scameras on sight. Nick and Graham (note how OUR Graham spells his name correctly) have responded to this heinous call with a call to action of their own: Modify these cameras into worthwhile photographic tools (1:26:20).    This episode’s book is The Ansel Adams Guide: Basic Techniques of Photography - Book 1 (https://www.amazon.com/Ansel-Adams-Guide-Techniques-Photography/dp/0821225758/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1533591609&sr=8-1&keywords=the+ansel+adams+guide) (2:03:55). "In the morning (17th) we landed on Chatham Island, which, like the others, rises with a tame and rounded outline, broken here and there by scattered hillocks, the remains of former craters. Nothing could be less inviting than the first appearance. A broken field of black basaltic lava, thrown into the most rugged waves, and crossed by great fissures, is everywhere covered by stunted, sunburnt brushwood, which shows little signs of life. The dry and parched surface, being heated by the noonday sun, gave to the air a close and sultry feeling, like that from a stove: we fancied even that the bushes smelt unpleasantly." Chapter XVII - Voyage of the BeagleFrom Darwin and the Beagle, A. Moorehead 1969In this podcast Josh, Sarah and James talk about Darwin's visit to the Galapagos Island and how that experience ultimately contributed to Darwin rejecting the notion of the fixity of species and developing his theory of the evolution and the process to create new species.  The Galapagos islands are a chain of volcanic islands that poke out of the Pacific ocean over 500 miles off the coast of Ecuador.  Although many of the islands are relatively close to each other, Darwin was struck by how the plants, insects, birds and reptiles on each of the islands were distinctly different from the other islands.Bartolome Island, Galapagos Islands, Travel ChannelAlthough most people associate Darwin and his experience with the Galapagos finches in developing his theory of evolution, we make the argument that it was the Galapagos tortoises that first intrigued and befuddled Chuck and stimulated him to begin pondering "...that mystery of mysteries—the first appearance of new beings on this earth."In the Voyage Darwin writes-"I have not as yet noticed by far the most remarkable feature in the natural history of this archipelago; it is, that the different islands to a considerable extent are inhabited by a different set of beings. My attention was first called to this fact by the Vice-Governor, Mr. Lawson, declaring that the tortoises differed from the different islands, and that he could with certainty tell from which island any one was brought. I did not for some time pay sufficient attention to this statement, and I had already partially mingled together the collections from two of the islands. I never dreamed that islands, about fifty or sixty miles apart, and most of them in sight of each other, formed of precisely the same rocks, placed under a quite similar climate, rising to a nearly equal height, would have been differently tenanted; but we shall soon see that this is the case."DARWIN RIDING TORTOISE, HEROES SCULPTURE GARDEN, by MARJAN WOUDAwww.marjanwouda.co.ukJosh talks about Darwin's experiences with these cyclopean creatures, drinking from their bladder and riding them like a horse, and about recent efforts to determine how many different species of tortoises actually exist and the current conservation efforts to protect them. The image of Darwin riding a tortoise reminded us of the old sketch a friend of Darwin's made showing Charles Darwin riding a beetle.Sarah talked about the marine and terrestrial iguanas found on the islands and how Darwin would throw the marine iguana into the ocean for it to rapidly return to shore wherein Darwin picked it back up by the tail to fling it back in the ocean. Darwin repeated this "experiment" until he was convinced that although the marine iguanas were perfectly adapted to swimming in the oceans they preferred to stay on shore, where it was safe.Looking out to sea - https://www.flickr.com/photos/45325473@N04/page2We finished the conversation about the role of the Mockingbirds and Finches found on the Galapagos islands in convincing Darwin that different species of the same type of animal could be found on different islands, although the islands themselves were not remarkably different from each other in habitat and geology. In addition, these islands were not significantly different from volcanic islands of Cape Verde Darwin visited 3.5 years earlier off the coast of Africa, and yet the species found in each of these archipelagos were more closely related to their neighboring continents than they were to each other.Sarah told us about her recent guest appearance on  The Common Descent which is an excellent podcast that discusses the diversity of life, past and present. Australian John Short was detained inside North Korea after leaving gospel tracts near a Buddhist temple. He was facing years in prison—but he wasn’t afraid. “Fear and faith cannot exist within my heart at the same time,” he says. In the second part of our conversation with Mr. Short, he shares how he prayed—out loud—throughout his captivity, how his captors responded to his faith and how his “letter of confession” and eventual release came about. He’ll also share how, upon landing back in China, he learned that his captivity was international news. Update: Susannah Mushatt Jones passed away on May 12, 2016. She was 116 years and 311 days old.  While we sweat it out at spin class in the name of good health, the world’s oldest people drink whiskey, eat bacon, and chug Miller High Lifes with a side of Johnny Walker Blue. At least those are the life secrets we love to hear when we talk about supercentenarians — the exclusive group of people who live to be at least 110 years old. But the science is not that simple, and the lives of these super-survivors are proof. The oldest person recorded in history, a French woman named Jeanne Calment, lived to be 122 years old. Calment, who was born in 1875, lived a fairly easy, stress-free existence, according to Jean-Marie Robine, a French demographer who met her and studied the last years of her life. But the more significant marker of her longevity, he believes, is her direct ancestors who lived, on average, 22 years longer than expected. “So definitely, the gene pool [was] exceptional,” he said. Tom Perls, a physician and researcher who runs the New England Centenarian Study, has studied about 150 supercentenarians. He agrees: living an extremely long life probably has to do more with your DNA than what you drink. “It’s many complicated pathways that feed into what determines your rate of aging and your risk for age related diseases,” Perls said. Today, the oldest known living person in the world is a woman in Brooklyn, New York, and lives a fairly quiet life. At 116 years old, Susannah Mushatt Jones has watched the world go form streetcars to hoverboards; from President William McKinley to President Barack Obama, who is framed in a picture on her wall. Last July, she celebrated her birthday in style with the Brooklyn Nets, local politicians and a gigantic cake topped with (frosting) bacon, a food she eats every day because her doctor says, “why not?” But she doesn’t talk as much as she used to, and spends most of her days with caretakers and family in Brooklyn — waking up to a big plate of grits, eggs and bacon every morning. And she knows better than to credit the bacon for her extraordinary life. “I have no secret,” she said in a video two years ago. “I just live with my family. My family makes me happy.”

Discovering Darwin
Episode 9: Chapter IX - Hybridism

Discovering Darwin

We dedicate this episode of the podcast to Chapter 9 - Hybridism in Darwin's Origin of Species (OoS). We all agree that this chapter is one of the most challenging chapters to read in OoS. In this chapter Darwin force marches the reader through example after example of hybrids while simultaneously admitting his ignorance on why these creatures should exist. It is not inherently obvious to the reader why they are being subjected to this catalog of biological anomaly and minutiae concerning pollination of orchids and other flowers but Darwin is adamant to share his knowledge, like a proud new parent inflicting others to look at numerous photos of their newborn. Darwin , early in Chapter I of OoS, argued against the notion that new species are formed through hybridization of existing species and we expected him to make that point in this chapter, but he never really does.It seems that by the end of the chapter we are exhausted from Darwin's recounting various animal and plant hybrids and admitting his ignorance of sterility in hybrids but that does not dissuade Darwin from concluding he was right all along - “…the facts given in this chapter do not seem to me opposed to the belief that species aboriginally [emphasis added] existed as varieties”. Darwin stays on point. We started off our discussion identifying our favorite hybrids. Josh first suggested mermaids as his favorite hybrid but James required he offer up a "real" hybrid.Mermaids James grew up with in FloridaJosh introduced us to the Liger, a hybrid between a male lion and female tiger both species have 38 chromosomes which also allows for reciprocal mating. Male tigers and female lions create tigons. The hybrid nomenclature is a portmanteau word derived from using the male species as the prefix and the female as the ending of the name hence a liger and tigon being separate types of hybrids.900 lb Hercules Sarah mentioned the Zedonk, a hybrid between a zebra and a donkey. This is another one of the hybrids that are created artificially in captivity. Few people realize that there are actually three different species of zebras - Grevy's, Plains and Mountain zebras - and each species has their own number of chromosomes. Grevy's zebras zebras have 46 chromosomes, Plains zebras have 44 and the Mountain zebra has 32 chromosomes whereas the donkey has 62.Image from Carole Coleman James suggested the Grolar, a hybrid between a grizzly and polar bear, was his favorite hybrid.A grizzly bear with her grolar cubsUnlike the liger and zedonk, the grolar occur in nature when the two species of bears interact. Historically grolar bears were less common since Grizzly bear distribution was further south than Polar bears but the warming of the climate has caused both bears to extend their range, polar bears southward and grolar bears northward, such they now more commonly overlap during the breeding season. Research suggests Polar bears "recently" diverged from brown bear ancestors with the speciation event occurring only 343,000-479,000 years ago. A mere blink of time in terms of the geological record. We discussed the most famous of all hybrids, the mule and how it is formed from the male donkey breeding with a female horse. Pictured below is a horse (left) and a mule (right) showing how the mule is often much larger than either of its parents, an example of Hybrid Vigor. picture by MerleWe noted that the mule hybrid can only be formed from male donkeys and female horses and rarely rarely formed from a male horse and female donkey. Sarah suggested that the reason the mule can only be formed from a male donkey and female horse has to do with the constraints of difference in gestation times between horses and donkeys. It turns out that horse gestation is 11-12 months whereas donkey gestation period is 11-14 months. There is a lot of overlap in gestation time between the two animals but it is an intriguing idea to consider it may influence non-reciprocal successful mating.  We introduced the idea of prezygotic isolating mechanisms and how they would evolve to prevent hybrids from being formed. Behavioral isolation is frequently seen in the complex displays and calls given by a variety of birds species and James mentioned the beautiful flashing patterns exhibited by the different species of fireflies. The image below shows the species-specific color and flash pattern of lightning bugs in Florida.Go here to learn more about firefliesJosh introduced us to the sordid and dark world of duck mating behavior and male duck genital morphology. Here is just one example of the size and complexity of the male duck penis which has evolved in response to female duck vaginas. Female ducks have evolved elaborate shaped vaginas to avoid fertilization from other species of ducks. This interesting topic is covered nicely in this short article here. Sarah spent some time explaining the intricacies of pollination and how pollen is actually greatly reduced multicellular structure that produces sperm - pollen is actually plant testicles. Plants evolve complex pollen grains, much like the extreme duck penis, to create reproductive barriers between species. The forms of inter-specific (between-species) barriers to reproduction would evolve because those individuals who are more discerning in their choice of mates would waste less time/energy fertilizing and producing those hybrid offspring which are often, at best, viable but infertile but more likely enviable. Often it is the female of the species that is the one who evolves the reproductive challenge for the male because she produces fewer, and often more metabolically expensive, gametes (eggs/ova) than her male (sperm) counterpart and therefore has more to lose if she errs on who she mates with than he.  Public domain image (created by the Dartmouth Electron Microscope Facility) Ultimately we conclude that hybrids exist because Darwin was correct in his model of speciation, that is new species derive from varieties of preexisting species (see Chapter 4 blog post) so they share many of the common genetic traits with their ancestral or closely related species. Surprisingly Darwin did not recognize that hybrids are his best argument against the special creation model of immutable species since one should not expect hybridism to occur between two immutably formed species that were specially created."That's a Wrap" & "Aces High" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/

Took a recorder into DC for Obama's big day. Craziness. "We just broke through a bus caravan on G Street. We're like locusts, you can't hold us down." I've never seen so many people on a Metro train, heard so many boos for an outgoing president, felt so cold and yet so warm. If you couldn't be there in person, this one's for you. Headphones advised. Also, Patrick was there and took some great photos.
