At school Nicky, along with many other pupils of Edinburgh Academy, was the victim of vicious abuse from teacher John Brownlee. Nicky didn't think Brownlee's crimes would ever be answered, but in March 2024, they went to court. John Brownlee is 89 and was declared unfit to stand trial, instead an “examination of the facts” was held to establish the truth. Brownlee was found to have committed 31 charges of assault and assault to injury relating to incidents spanning from 1967 to 1991, as well as a composite charge of cruel unnatural treatment across the 20 years he worked at the school. Now Nicky sits down with two other survivors who gave evidence, Frazer Macdonald and Neil MacDonald, and Scottish journalist Marcello Mega. They discuss how the story of the historic abuse at Edinburgh Academy has unfolded, what it was like to be in court and the consequences of childhood abuse.WARNING: This episode contains descriptions of physical abuse, suicidal thoughts and strong languageProduced by Audio Always Producer: Ailsa Rochester Editor: Jo Meek Sound: Ailsa Rochester
Full episodes info and Show Notes - www.wearelookingsideways.com To say that Neil McDonald is interested in skate history is a little like saying Capability Brown liked to dabble in the odd bit of gardening. Neil is a journalist, author, curator and archivist who is obsessed, to an awe-inspiring degree, with the tales and intricacies of skate history. It's a fascination he explores through his essential Science Versus Life Instagram account, and which he is developing on the grandest possible scale with his forthcoming history of UK skateboarding. For me, Neil's reverent take on the power and importance of skate history makes him more akin to a legitimate cultural curator. It's why I kept using the word archivist during our conversation, and why I think his work is so important and much more than the mere ‘scanning of old skateboard magazines', to paraphrase his Insta bio. Why? Because this stuff matters. It's important, like any history is important. It's how we define ourselves as a culture, and how we safeguard the uniqueness of these activities many of us have based our entire lives around. With Science Versus Life and his forthcoming book, Neil is doing nothing less than trying to preserve and present the entire pre-digital history of British skateboarding and, by extension, youth culture in this country. As you might imagine if you've listened to the show for a while, this mission is right up my boulevard, and I enjoyed our chat very much indeed. Hope you do too. Thanks to Matt Ward for the theme tune, to my editor Fina Charleson, and to Duncan Yeldham for production support.
On Back Story with Dana Lewis this week, the Crisis in Ukraine is reaching a boiling point, and our guest Ben Hodges, a Lt. Gen. (Ret) who commanded all U.S. Army forces in Europe, says 90% Russia is likely to invade.Journalist Fred Weir talks to Russian public opinion, where the appetite for war is low.In Canada Truckers protests in Ottawa, and at the border, won't go away. Police and politicians seem paralyzed. Long time Canadian journalist Neil Macdonald explains this is much more than an anti-vaxxer blockade, but a meltdown of grievances, and the demands for Government resignations amount to a Canadian insurrection attempt.
On a new episode of the ifa Show, host Neil Griffiths is joined by The Advisers Association's chief executive, Neil Macdonald. Neil joined this week's podcast to discuss two opinion pieces he wrote published on ifa in-depth, regarding why there could be a “mass exodus” of advisers if the current requirement for existing advisers with no degree to have an approved qualification by 1 January 2026 is not addressed. “I think it will be a significant number,” Mr Macdonald said. “You've got this demographic thing that adviser ages are increasing anyway. And so that's the risk, I think. There will be people who will retire probably maybe four or five years earlier than they need to.” Mr Macdonald discusses his opinion on the matter and what he would like to see government and regulators do before 2026. On a very special episode of the ifa show, host Neil Griffiths is joined by Greg Cook of Eureka Whittaker Macnaught and Mia Johnson of Keyman Financial Services to talk all things FASEA. With responsibilities to be wound up at the end of the year, this episode looks at FASEA's work and exams through Greg, who has been in the industry for 30 years, and Mia, who is midway through her professional year. Greg and Mia also discuss a recent opinion piece published on ifa by The Advisers Association's Neil Macdonald, who said advisers would exit the industry in droves if the current requirement for existing advisers with no degree to have an approved qualification by 1 January 2026 is not addressed. “I don't know whether I'd term it as a mass walkout, but certainly the number of advisers is going to decline, while the number coming through on the Professional Year is picking up from what I can see, the number of advisers that will have to leave the industry will be much higher,” Greg said. Mia added: “My concern at the moment is that when the time comes, 2026 rolls around, I feel as though we're almost not going to have an industry left because everybody's going to leave. So what I'm really passionate about at the moment is getting younger people into the industry.” The ifa Show is brought to you by Sharesight

The overhaul of AMP's advice business has dominated recent industry news, as the group's ‘difficult but necessary' revaluing of its BOLR terms had devastating effects on some of its former advisers. In this episode of The ifa Show, host Sarah Kendell is joined by The Advisers Association chief executive Neil Macdonald to get the latest on how AMP's dramatic transformation is playing out among current and former advisers. Neil discusses the progress in negotiations with advisers being exited out of AMP, how lookback audits are impacting the values planners are getting for their client books, and what the changes have meant from an emotional perspective for affected advisers. Neil also touches on how remaining AMP advisers are being encouraged to shore up their long-term profitability in the face of further regulatory change and the impact of AMP's transformative policies on adviser workloads.

As Trump and Biden simultaneously and separately present to the American people, it’s clear we are observing a steep divide, not a debate. Host Tom Clark turns to former CBC journalist Neil Macdonald, to discuss the situation from a Canadian perspective. Both Tom and Neil spent time covering Washington for different Canadian networks, and beyond the smart banter between the two, a really crisp perspective emerges on how Canada should respond to the populism and shocking conduct we are strangely becoming accustomed to.
Neil Macdonald, head of the Wealth and Asset Management Centre of Excellence at KPMG, and Amar Gill, APAC head of investment stewardship at Blackrock, join OMFIF's Brandon Chye to talk about the changing nature of asset management. The View from the Kop podcast is back with host Paul Wheelock joined by regulars Paul Philbin and Neil Macdonald as well as Dublin-based broadcaster and journalist Jonathan Higgins, who recently had the pleasure of interviewing Markus Babbel. The ex-Liverpool defender believed that a win over Bayern Munich would push Jurgen Klopp's side on to another level and the panel whether what happened in the Allianz Arena will be the 'eureka' moment of the season in the same way that Gary McAllister's Goodison winner all those years ago was. The draw with - and ticket prices for - Porto is also discussed before talk turns to next weekend's visit of Tottenham to Anfield and why the north Londoners were never and will never be considered title challengers. Joe Gomez is set to return against Spurs but should Joel Matip keep his place? That leads to a debate about the unlikely players helping the Reds' double charge before the focus shifts to the summer and what Klopp's transfer policy should be and why fine-tuning doesn't necessarily mean no superstars like Alisson and Virgil van Dijk coming in. But Philbo, Neil and Jonathan are emphatic in their response to talk of a Liverpool return for Philippe Coutinho. Enjoy. For information regarding your data privacy, visit acast.com/privacy

So Liverpool have started the New Year with back-to-back defeats. But given Jurgen Klopp’s side still have a four-point lead at the top, and given the FA Cup was at the bottom of the priority list, our first View from the Kop podcast of 2019 focuses very much on the positives, which there are a lot. That much is made clear by regular guest Paul Philbin, who describes the feeling in the fan base after leaving the Etihad last Thursday.Philbo is joined by fellow Reds Matt Addison, Sean Bradbury and Neil Macdonald and they discuss the defeat to Manchester City and the ‘rivalry’ between the clubs, as well the remarkable run of wins leading up to the table-topping clash, and the fixture-list quirk that could well help Liverpool see off Pep Guardiola’s men. With it being January, a lot of talk centres round the transfer window, and while Klopp has played down the chances of boosting his squad this month, did anyone see Fabinho coming, and did anyone see Alisson coming when it did? That leads the panel to wonder whether Klopp and Michael Edwards have another surprise up their sleeve. If they o, one of the guests would love Liverpool to go after a player who is seemingly set to leave the other team in the title race, as well as another defensive recruit, while there are also calls for a new striker, which in turns lead to a discussion over Daniel Sturridge’s form and future. It’s well documented that January is not always the best time to do business but Sean explains why the opposite could be true for Klopp. It’s also argued that history, and the fact that two of the Reds’ deadly front three are set for long summers once again, should also have an influence over whether the Liverpool manager sticks or twists. But buy or not, Liverpool remain in a great position, and the panel are asked whether they think this is a better squad than the ones that went so close in 2009 and 2014.It’s a good listen. Enjoy. For information regarding your data privacy, visit acast.com/privacy
Jurgen Klopp may have so far this season resisted the temptation to rotate the impressive squad he has put together in his three years as Liverpool boss, but that’s exactly what we have done for our latest View from the Kop podcast.Caoimhe O’Neill makes her debut on the show, and along with regulars, and fellow Reds fans, Paul Philbin and Neil Macdonald, and host Paul Wheelock, they kick-off by reflecting on the start to the campaign. The trio wonder whether the change in Klopp’s style this season is by design or a consequence of the testing run of matches his side played going into the international break. But they are all in agreement that we are now witnessing a different, more rounded and mature Liverpool, and explain why that is the case. The ‘No 10’ role then comes up for debate and how much Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain is being missed. Can Adam Lallana fill his boots? Can Klopp trust Xherdan Shaqiri to play there? And will it ever be Naby Keita’s position? The panel try to answer those questions, give their midfield line-up for the trip to Huddersfield Town next Saturday, and then disagree over whether this next run of games, which certainly look easier on paper, provide Klopp with the perfect opportunity to freshen up his starting line-up.The merits of Arsenal’s and Chelsea’s title chances are also discussed before we ponder a question that hasn’t been asked – or widely at least – in the week of Klopp’s third anniversary in charge of the Reds. It’s been an ominously impressive start to the season for Liverpool – and to reflect on the wins over West Ham and Crystal Palace, and the big talking points from them, our View from the Kop podcast is back.Reds fans Paul Philbin and Neil Macdonald join host Paul Wheelock in the ECHO studio and they believe Jurgen Klopp’s squad strengthening is already beginning to pay dividends.Paul Philbin reckons that was proved by Jordan Henderson’s excellent performance off the bench on Monday night but the question is will the Liverpool captain get his place back in the team given the performances produced by the player who could be the surprise package of the season so far.One midfielder who has quickly become a nailed-on starter for the Reds is Naby Keita and both our guests struggle to contain their excitement over the summer signing. But Neil believes there is plenty more to come from Keita and from Klopp’s side in general – and that leads him to state his belief that the battle for Premier League title is already a two-horse race. Paul Philbin disagrees, but both supporters are on the same page when it comes to Virgil van Dijk, the January signing who has ‘changed everything’.Praise is also lavished on van Dijk’s new centre-back partner Joe Gomez whose displays could pose a problem for Dejan Lovren.Alisson Becker’s start to life between the Liverpool posts is discussed in detail before talk turns to the upcoming games v Brighton and Leicester and why maximum points is imperative in the ‘who-blinks-first’ showdown with Manchester City. And the podcast rounds off with a discussion about next week’s Champions League draw.Enjoy.
