Friday Election Watch: NYT Poll Signals Total Disaster For A Harris Campaign In Complete Freefall! We Are In An Information War!
We cut through the noise to explore the policies that will be prioritized by any new administration, regardless of the election outcome, and asses their implications for commodities markets. The top priority for both administrations is to ensure the security of supply in energy and minerals and to lower energy prices to curb inflation. Debasement trades are likely to perform well under any administration, though could get further supercharged under a Republican sweep. Gold stands out as the commodity of choice for hedging the US elections. This week, as the election draws closer, we're narrowing the focus on national security. And we've got the perfect guest to discuss the topics that keep the watchers up at night and the area that is most likely to produce an October surprise. Tom Bowman is the legendary NPR National Desk reporter who covers the Pentagon along with co-hosting NPR's Taking Cover podcast and his latest podcast, “A Good Guy” from NPR's Embedded. In his current role, Bowman has traveled to Syria as well as Iraq and Afghanistan often for month-long visits and embedded with U.S. Marines and soldiers. Before coming to NPR in April 2006, Bowman spent nine years as a Pentagon reporter at The Baltimore Sun. Altogether he was at The Sun for nearly two decades, covering the Maryland Statehouse, the U.S. Congress, the U.S. Naval Academy, and the National Security Agency (NSA). His coverage of racial and gender discrimination at NSA led to a Pentagon investigation in 1994. Initially Bowman imagined his career path would take him into academia as a history, government, or journalism professor. During college Bowman worked as a stringer at The Patriot Ledger in Quincy, Mass. He also worked for the Daily Transcript in Dedham, Mass., and then as a reporter at States News Service, writing for the Miami Herald and the Anniston (Ala.) Star. Bowman is a co-winner of a 2006 National Headliners' Award for stories on the lack of advanced tourniquets for U.S. troops in Iraq. In 2010, he received an Edward R. Murrow Award for his coverage of a Taliban roadside bomb attack on an Army unit. In 2024, Bowman was also awarded a Murrow Award for Best Investigative Reporting for the Taking Cover podcast. Bowman earned a Bachelor of Arts in history from St. Michael's College in Winooski, Vermont, and a master's degree in American Studies from Boston College. He's seen a lot, he's done a lot and he goes deep with your host Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) in this hard hitting all new episode of Independent Americans. From post election violence to General John Kelly's revelations about just how unfit Trump is for office to Hamas' leader being killed by Israel, there is a lot happening. Last October, we featured a conversation with Kian Vesteinsson, co-author of Freedom House's 2023 FREEDOM ON THE NET report, about the repressive power of artificial intelligence. A year later, Freedom House's 2024 FREEDOM ON THE NET report is entitled “The Struggle for Trust Online”. And as Allie Funk, one of its co-authors, explains, it's a very mixed report on the state of online trust. In some countries - most notably Iceland, Chile and Taiwan - internet freedom has improved in 2024. But in others - especially Russia, Iran and, especially, China - things have only gotten worse over the last year. So, I asked Funk, what needs to change to build online trust around the world? How can the large democracies of North America and Europe learn from Iceland, Chile and Taiwan to build more freedom on the net?Allie Funk leads Freedom House's technology and democracy initiative, including Freedom on the Net and Election Watch for the Digital Age. She also represents Freedom House on the Freedom Online Coalition's Advisory Network, serves on the Global Network Initiative's Board of Directors, and is a Council on Foreign Relations' Term Member. Her writing has been published in the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, WIRED, Lawfare, the Hill, the Diplomat, and Just Security, among others. Prior to joining Freedom House, Allie worked at the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers on issues relating to reforming U.S. surveillance practices, closing the Guantanamo Bay detention facility, and protecting the right to counsel, and also worked with Human Rights First's foreign policy team. She holds a master's degree in human rights from the London School of Economics and Political Science and a B.A. in philosophy and political science from the University of Louisville.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. Episode 56 is a mostly Made in Canada geopolitical discussion. Frank covers the NDP decision to end its supply and confidence agreement with Prime Minister Trudeau and his Liberal Party, leading to speculation of a snap election soon in Canada. Frank handicaps the three provincial elections in Canada in October in BC, Saskatchewan and his home province of New Brunswick where it is a close race dictated by regional differences in voter preferences. As two months have passed without a decision by Trudeau to step down, it appears to Frank like the Prime Minister will stay on to lead the Liberals through the next election. Frank puts concern over border security in Quebec in perspective as minor in comparison to the southern border of the US and then finishes the conversation with US election predictions and a discussion on the disturbing escalation in tensions between Israel and Hezbollah. The events of the past few weeks, President Biden's poor debate performance, followed by Saturday's assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, have led to a clear shift in the tone of the elections and increased the probability for a sizable Red Wave. Given the range of scenarios that could play out, gold stands out as a winner. The first edition of our Commodities 2024 US Elections Watch focused on implications for the commodities under a split Congress outcome, now we assess what GOP control of all Washington levers of power could mean for the sector. The Defend our Democracy Movement launched a national civil society campaign called Election Watch from last year. Election Watch is aimed at observing and pronouncing on the integrity of the upcoming 2024 elections in South Africa. This year marks 30 years of democracy and in the last three decades and we have seen positive change, development and transformation, but also failure: state capture, corruption, unemployment and poor service delivery. The 2024 elections will be the most contested yet; as a result we want organisations and ordinary people to come together to protect the integrity and credibility of the elections. To tell us more about this campaign were joined by Zaakirah Vadi Defend Our Democracy Executive Director.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Generation after generation seem to pine for “the good old days,” an elusive time when many of us think morals, institutions, and the quality of life, in general, were higher. Americans are no exception to this rule, but there's something unique about American nostalgia. While we reminisce about the past, we also owe much of our success as a nation to our forward-thinking culture that embraces the possibility of the American Dream. Today on Political Economy, I talk with Karlyn Bowman about the way Americans view their nation, and the tensions between their love of their past and their strong hope for the future.Bowman is a distinguished senior fellow emeritus here at AEI, where she specializes on American public opinion. In 1982, she founded “Election Watch,” the longest-running political analysis program in Washington. She has also been a Forbes columnist since 2008.
This week on Korea Pro Podcast, we start by examining the case of a South Korean missionary charged with espionage in Russia and the potential fate that awaits him. Next, we delve into the controversial nomination of a scandal-ridden former South Korean defense minister, Lee Jong-sup, currently under investigation for abuse of power, to serve as the country's ambassador to Australia. We then discuss South Korea's role in hosting the upcoming Summit for Democracy and the potential reason the country was chosen to host the event despite democracy's retreat in the country under the Yoon administration. Shifting the focus to the upcoming general election, we explore the parties' nomination processes and the official start of campaigning on March 28. We also shed light on some of South Korea's more unusual campaign practices and problematic candidates, including a conservative who has expressed disdain for the country's 1980s democratization movement, another conservative with no qualms about orgies and a progressive candidate who was snubbed despite primary voters' support due to his status as a conscientious objector. Finally, Jeongmin introduces her new analytical series: “Korea Insider” and “Election Watch.” This week, she profiles former justice minister Han Dong-hoon's rise to political celebrity and analyzes the rise of former justice minister Cho Kuk's new political party for her two series, respectively. About the podcast: The Korea Pro Podcast is a weekly 15-minute conversation hosted by Editorial Director Jeongmin Kim (@jeongminnkim) and Editor John Lee (@koreanforeigner), diving deep into the most pressing stories shaping South Korea — and dissecting the most complicated ones for professionals monitoring ROK politics, diplomacy, culture, society and technology. Uploaded every Friday. This episode was recorded on March 14, 2024. Audio edited by Joe Smith

Andrew and a couple of special guests go deep on the Turkish election. Sorry for the lack of content lately, it's been a busy spring for all of us.
A new report put out by two election watchdog groups—the Gibson Group of Maryland, and Election Watch—exposes what appears to be a large-scale money laundering scheme in American elections. The report claims that the groups have uncovered over $200 million worth of money that's been laundered into political donations, wherein thousands of alleged smurfs make non-stop donations into the political machine. Smurfing, in the world of organized crime, is a specific method of money laundering where a large sum of money is split up into many, many smaller sums of money, which can avoid getting detected by the authorities. This only uncovers a much bigger issue with our political system: outside money affecting local elections. With the way that our current system works, it's possible for wealthy American billionaires, multi-millionaires, or potentially several thousand smurfs to shape our local elections by using large amounts of money. It's amid this backdrop of 10,000 alleged smurfs, as well the reality of giant amounts of out-of-state election funding, that a new amendment to the U.S. Constitution is roaring across the country, and it has now been endorsed by 22 out of the necessary 38 states. This amendment, if passed, would officially become the 28th amendment to the U.S. Consitution, and it would ban the use of both foreign and out-of-state funding in local elections. ⭕️ Sign up for our NEWSLETTER and stay in touch
