Evelyn Mason is an experienced music therapist and Vice-Chancellor's PhD Student at the Cambridge Institute for Music Therapy Research at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) in Cambridge. Chroma Therapies and the Independent Neurorehabilitation Providers Alliance (INPA) are collaborating with ARU on this study which focuses on music therapy to address the emotional challenges of family caregivers of people with Huntington's disease. As a practising clinician, she has specialisms in brain injury rehabilitation, adoption, dementia, learning disability and hospice care. Having completed her MA Music Therapy training at ARU in 2008, she worked for the Northern Ireland Music Therapy Trust in Belfast, with children with learning difficulties in Chennai, India, for Methodist Homes Association (MHA) in central England, for Chroma Therapies with individual adoption cases, and currently works with Chroma Therapies as a Neurologic Music Therapist at a brain injury rehabilitation unit in Bristol. Evelyn employs an integrative approach in her clinical work. At times, she uses psychodynamic processes at the pre-assessment phase to understand relational or engagement issues with the client. Evelyn seeks to adopt a desire-based approach by putting the client's choices at the core of the therapeutic journey. She works within the scientific theory model when carrying out her rehabilitation work, seeking to enable the client to benefit from inter-disciplinary working and patient-centred rather than discipline-centred programs. Evelyn's future research interests are related to the field of neuro-disability. They include: Developing musical techniques to address neurologically-induced sensations. Examining music therapy techniques to address speech deficits in stroke patients diagnosed with aphasia. Analysing connections between social issues and acquired brain injury. Developing online music therapy models for carers of people with neurodegenerative conditions. References/links: The Academy of Neurologic Music Therapy – -In Memory of Robert F. You will be SO inspired by today's guest my friends. Today I sit down with my friend, Callie Mescher FitzGerald, a licensed music therapist and founder of Centrally Rooted in Dubuque, Iowa. A native of Cascade, Iowa, Callie holds degrees in Music Education, Vocal Performance, and is certified as a Neurologic Music Therapist. She has been passionate about the development of children her entire life and is eager to share her knowledge and joy of music with children and families. Her approach is informed, but informal, and she enjoys wearing her 'therapist hat' to see the developmental milestones expand in little ones. In the midst of personal transformation after losing her partner to mental illness, Callie decided to bring her music back to her hometown to lead children in vocal and instrumental lessons beginning in 2018. In a mere two years, Callie went from a handful of students to now a full roster with a waiting list. And in 2021, Callie and her new husband purchased a building in a historically underserved neighborhood in Dubuque, Iowa, to create Centrally Rooted. Centrally Rooted provides a safe space for creative and self-expression for kids and families of all ages, abilities, and income levels. You will LOVE this episode. Tune in for a few key takeaways, and then go give Callie and Centrally Rooted a follow! Key Takeaways Callie's vision is to create a center for developing and supporting positive mental health via self-expression. Right now, the offerings include a lot of music, but Callie's goal is to bring in yoga, play therapists, art therapists, and more to help people focus on their overall well-being in a variety of creative ways. As a girl, Callie did NOT love music. She says her parents forced her to begrudingly attend weekly music lessons, but it wasn't until joining the theater club and performing on stage in high school that she considered music as a career. In her undergrad, Callie studied musical performance and music education. But she also found that she loved the study of psychology and understanding how the human brain worked. She then decided to pursue a music therapy degree after finding the neurologic, research-based effects of music on the brain. “Music has a way of sneaking into each different area of the brain, and so there's really no limit for what can be reached. New pathways can be merged in the brain via music-making.” “It's amazing what music can do in the brain.” Callie has worked with stroke victims, autistic children, spinal cord damage, and has helped them recover in fun, effective ways. “The work is hidden; it just looks like play.” Callie “hides” the therapy into fun and play to intrinsically motivate her patients and get them to push past some of their perceived limitations. Mindful Musicians is the combination of Callie's personal mission, professional training, and societal need to have constructive conversations about mental health. Presented through music and play to children and their caregivers, Mindful Musicians teaches kids positive self-talk, accepting others, confidence-building, coping skills, emotional expression, and more. With music competence in children's formative years comes verbal development, coordination, and Callie says, “It's about setting them up for the most success they can have.” Callie's big goal is to turn Mindful Musicians into a curriculum and make it available to families, schools, and organizations, to positively impact kids in their care. “I was letting the constraints of the world we live in limit my dreaming capability.” “All we can choose is how we react to it,” Callie shares that pain and suffering is inevitable in life, but through reflection and growth beautiful things can become of it. And so, so much more in today's episode! One thing that is clear when you have a conversation with Ceci Juno, thoughtfulness is the theme to her work, whether in the studio or in the hospital treating patients. Her songs are soothing yet at the same time catchy, and seem to draw from jazz, pop, folk with traditional Latin inspiration. Ceci is a graduate of Berklee College of Music with a degree in Music Therapy. She is an active Neurologic Music Therapist in her home country of Ecuador and serves as a true ambassador of this important field. She is also a vocalist, pianist, guitarist and songwriter who holds the #1 hit song in Ecuador called Fantasmas. Ronnie sat with Ceci between lectures at the annual American Congress of Rehab Medicine (ACRM), where music and the arts have come to play in the same space as treatment and science for people with neurodisabilty. Song List: Song 1: Ahora Se Song 2: Libre Song 3: Fantasmas
Luke talks to Daniel Thomas about his process of moving from being a music therapist into running an arts therapy business. This includes to interesting discussion on the nature of 'brands', as well as reflections on how we communicate the subtle nuances fo therapeutic work to other professionals. Daniel qualified as a music therapist in 2002. His past clinical work focused on children and families, especially supporting attachment, bonding and resilience. Daniel has worked in prisons, mental health settings and in special and mainstream schools with children with a range of brain injuries and other conditions He certified in the APCI assessment in 2014, and as a Neurologic Music Therapist in 2017. You've probably heard the story that music can calm the beast but can it really? How does it work? Does it have other healing abilities? Music Therapy is not new. Studies first surfaced during World War II about treating war veterans with PTSD with music. Not just any music but specific music that would calm their minds. My guest on this show is a music therapist with the VNA (Visiting Nurse Association) of the Treasure Coast. She works with Hospice patients, Alzheimer and Dementia patients and those with Parkinson's to help them get walking and moving. How can you help those you love with music therapy? Listen in as Moreen shows us how you can make a difference with music. Yes she brought her guitar and yes she moved me to tears! Moreen Burkart is a board certified music therapist. Moreen received a Bachelor of Arts in Music Technology with minors in Psychology and Business as well as her Bachelor of Science in Music Therapy. As a music therapist, Moreen has worked with persons of all ages in a variety of settings including: day-cares, rehabilitation facilities, nursing homes, skilled nursing facilities, assisted living, memory care communities, 1:1 in-home, as well as hospice. Moreen created the music therapy position at Treasure Coast Hospice for their pediatric program and when the opportunity arose, Moreen was given the opportunity to create and implement the music therapy program at the VNA of the Treasure Coast. Made possible by the funding of Impact 100, Moreen now provides music therapy services for the VNA’s hospice patients and families as well as community music therapy groups and in-services. This past year she completed the Neurologic Music Therapy Institute, receiving the title Neurologic Music Therapist as well as attended the National American Music Therapy Conference, qualifying her to become a music therapy internship supervisor.
