“Healing for Joy” Lyrics by Leigh Farnell / Inspired by a Therapist's Truth [Verse 1] I walked into that room with my battle-scarred heart Wore pain like armor, been broken from the start Said, “I'm just trying to be strong, to survive the storm” He looked in my eyes and said, “That's not what healing's for” [Pre-Chorus] “You already know how to carry the weight You've lived through the fire, you've walked through the gate” And then he smiled — like he'd opened a door And said something I'd never heard before [Chorus] “You're not healing just to hold the pain Not to brave the storm or stand in the rain You're used to sorrow — it's joy you push away You're healing now to let the light stay” To laugh without guilt, to dance without fear To welcome the sunrise and know you belong here You're not healing for more pain to destroy You're healing now… to hold joy [Verse 2] I never knew that peace could feel so raw It scared me more than the things I saw Felt like betrayal to smile again But he said, “This is where your new life begins” [Pre-Chorus] “You've built a home in survival mode But now it's time to lay that burden down” And I felt my heart — just start to unfold At the thought that I could love this life I hold [Chorus] 'Cause I'm not healing just to hold the pain Not to brave the storm or stand in the rain I'm used to sorrow — it's joy I've turned away But I'm healing now to let the light stay To laugh without guilt, to dance without fear To open my arms and say, “I deserve to be here” I'm not healing for more pain to destroy I'm healing now… to hold joy [Bridge] It's not weakness to feel the sun To let yourself shine when the darkness is done I'm learning now what strength really means To feel safe in peace, to dream tender dreams [Final Chorus] I'm not healing just to hold the pain I'm not just surviving — I'm living again It's time I welcomed the love I've denied Time I let happiness back inside To laugh with my whole heart, not look away To believe I deserve a beautiful day I'm not healing for more pain to destroy I'm healing now… I'm healing now… To hold joy Links to Podcast - Leading Your Best Life Spotify https://open.spotify.com/show/1fnDlrXvIj7b6P1NP4ZP3h?si=2dd37c03e5494501 Apple https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/leading-your-best-life-with-leigh-farnell/id1421054862 Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6y0JxVJsGnI&list=PLHBG3_iAZUoa3cSaWkBVS9neKsMoa62dK Youtube - click here Apple Podcasts - click here Spotify - click here Links to donate to support Leading Your Best Life Podcast https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=JMHAAMN2HL3MN ThatsATeeShirtCompany.com The Most Empowering Apparel on the Planet - Check it Out! What if creativity isn't about doing more — but about trusting the seasons of your life? This week on the Embodied Podcast, I sat down with East Coast musician Christina Martin for a heartfelt conversation about music, healing, and the courage to trust yourself. Christina's creative journey isn't linear — and that's what makes it inspiring. Growing up on the windswept coast of Nova Scotia, she learned early to navigate loss, trauma, and the slow work of rebuilding trust. Trust the slow season Looking back now, she sees creativity as a cycle — one that requires rest, reflection, and space. “There were times I felt guilty for not having the energy to keep doing, doing, doing,” Christina shared. “But looking back, I see now — when the call comes, you're fueled. And when you follow that, it's a pretty cool ride.” This is what we explored together — letting go, trusting the quiet seasons, and allowing healing to happen in your own time.Healing happens in relationship Christina shared openly about her process as an artist — and as a woman learning to trust herself again after loss and betrayal. Over time, supportive relationships helped her heal and rebuild trust — with herself, her creativity, and with others. “It was a big thing for me... when I start to feel this sense of I don't want to hurt somebody or maybe my feelings aren't valid... It's because my body is still remembering a bit of this pain. It's trying to protect itself.” Less is more We also talked about letting go of perfectionism in creative work — making space for joy, presence, and connection. “Less is more has proven to bring more joy, more meaningful work, more room for just creativity and thoughts.” Trust your pace This episode is a beautiful invitation to slow down — to trust your body, your inner pace, and the cycles of creativity that move through your life. When we give ourselves permission to rest, to reflect, and to trust the call when it comes — we open ourselves to a life that feels more true. Send us a text#19: This week, Liz and Bryce The Third dive into a very special and personal conversation about music, something that has always been close to Bryce's heart. For Bryce, music is an art form for self-expression, and it has helped him build a relationship with himself. When he got sober, Bryce thought he might never be able to experience music again — let alone create it. However, in recovery Bryce has created his own home within music, listening and creating the way he wants to.Liz also touches on her own relationship with music, noting how much like Bryce, music allows her to express her emotions in a safe, cathartic way — freeing the feelings that feel 'stuck.' Have you ever thought about music not just as entertaining, but as something healing? Research suggests that the benefits of music can go beyond just jamming to catchy tunes. Neuroscientist and New York Times best-selling author of This Is Your Brain on Music Daniel J. Levitin explores this idea in his new book, I Heard There was a Secret Chord: Music as Medicine. Levitin's recent release discusses music as one of humanity's oldest medicines and explores the deep connections between music and healing that have been found across the globe. I Heard There Was a Secret Chord explores the curative powers of music, showing us how and why it can be one of the most potent therapies today. He gathers and synthesizes the results of numerous studies on music and the brain, demonstrating how music can contribute to the treatment of a host of ailments, from neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's to cognitive injury, depression, and pain. Levitin incorporates interviews with multiple musicians, from Sting to Kent Nagano to Mari Kodama. And Levitin himself is not only an acclaimed scientist but an award-winning musician and composer in his own right, living the very nexus he explores in his work. I Heard There Was a Secret Chord makes an argument for the critical role music has played in human biology, illuminating the neuroscience of music and its profound benefits for people of all ages who engage with it. Daniel J. Levitin is a neuroscientist, musician, and the author of four New York Times best-selling books, including This Is Your Brain on Music. He is dean emeritus at Minerva University, professor emeritus at McGill University, and visiting professor at UCLA. A saxophonist, guitarist, bass player, and vocalist, he has worked as a producer and recording consultant. Brian Nova is considered one of the top Jazz Guitarists/Vocalists in the nation, in addition to being Director of Jazz Studies at Seattle University from 1990-1996. Nova has 7 recordings of his own as well as appearing on 70+ artist's recordings. His latest CD release, The Brian Nova Collective, features Brian's Trio with many of his favorite artists like Shelly Berg, Laurence Hobgood, Tom Scott, Larry Dunlap and others. Marc McKennon is a talented multi-instrumentalist and scientist from Seattle. Starting out on the piano, he branched out to stringed instruments, eventually falling in love with the dobro. Although it is traditionally a bluegrass instrument, Marc fearlessly takes his dobro into the realms of jazz, rock, folk, country, and pretty much anywhere else he can. When he isn't playing music, he is engaged in cancer and neurologic drug research and development as a PhD organic chemist. At the heart of every challenge lies the potential for innovation, unity, and profound personal growth. Music, with its boundless capacity to express, heal, and unite, offers a unique vantage point on life's challenges. This week I have the privilege to be joined by Linda McIntyre, a composer, conductor, and pioneer at the forefront of using music as a transformative force to bring light to the shadows of Parkinson's disease. Her work with the New Voice Choir not only showcases the transformative power of music but also the strength found in community and shared experiences. In this episode, we uncover the layers of Linda's mission, diving into the relationship between music and wellness, the communal strength born from shared vulnerability, and the transformative journey of turning adversity into art. We explore the nuances of creating a safe, nurturing space where music serves as both a bridge and a destination, inviting us to consider the broader implications of artistic expression as a form of therapy and celebration.Join us as we tune into the melodies of resilience, exploring how creativity, when fueled by love and resilience, can transcend personal challenges, and inspire collective healing and joy.Topics CoveredThe interplay of music and healing in Parkinson's managementBuilding community and support through choir participationHarnessing personal challenges as fuel for creative expressionThe transformative journey from individual struggle to collective strengthThe role of creativity in enhancing physical and mental well-beingAdapting artistic practices for inclusivity and accessibilityThe importance and value of routine in sustaining creative projectsNavigating the challenges of leadership and inspiration in therapeutic settingsMusic as a bridge between personal experience and communal healingThe impact of collaborative art on overcoming societal stigmasTranscriptYou can find the transcript on the episode's web page by clicking here.Linda's Bio & ResourcesLinda is an award-winning composer, arranger, teacher, director, & performer – just an all-round muso, really! As you listen to this music and water sounds, imagine yourself in a tranquil natural setting, surrounded by the beauty and serenity of nature. You may picture yourself walking along the banks of a gently flowing stream, with trees and bushes rustling gently in the breeze. The sunlight filters through the leaves, casting dappled patterns on the ground, and the sound of water trickling over rocks and stones creates a peaceful atmosphere. Or, you might imagine yourself reclining on a white sandy beach, with crystal-clear water lapping at your feet. The warm sun beats down on your skin, and the distant sound of seagulls and waves crashing on the shore adds to the relaxing ambiance. Alternatively, you could visualize yourself sitting in a quiet forest glade, surrounded by tall trees and the rustling of leaves. Additionally, it can activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for our "rest and digest" response and can help to counteract the effects of stress and anxiety. You can listen to this episode : To fall asleep faster and deeper anytime you struggle to fall asleep because of stress, anxiety, overthinking or insomnia. Close your eyes, relax your muscles, slow down your breathing and focus on the relaxing music, water drops and piano notes. Keep visualizing the peaceful scenery around you. To relieve stress, anxiety, tension or negative energy anytime you have a stressful day. To meditate, practice mindfulness, breathing exercises, journaling, yoga or visualization.
