A famous phrase often heard is "Your words matter." Whether you realize it or not, your words and thoughts profoundly impact your life. Your words and thoughts shape your life experiences and even your physical health. So, this revolutionary concept is that humans can alter their brain's physical structure by changing negative thought patterns and eliminating trauma. This transformation to heal the mind and heal the body is not a solitary act but a cooperative effort with Christ and the Holy Spirit. Science and Scripture: Converging Paths Scripture states that humans are created in Christ's image and embody both a soul and a spirit. The body is viewed as an exterior part, where true healing starts from within, specifically through the soul and spirit, by fostering a relationship with God. This is a belief that traditional science is finally catching up and proving these scriptural assertions. Mind Renewal and Healing Changing the way you perceive yourself is crucial. Identity in Christ becomes a cornerstone in this transformative journey as you focus on healing the mind and the body. One's beliefs empower thoughts and influence emotions and actions, ultimately defining outcomes. Here are some practical methods to reverse negative thought patterns, enhance your mental and physical health, and wear the armor of God in your daily life. Chronic pain can seem endless and the situation hopeless. But that doesn't need to be the case. Because the brain gives the orders we can manipulate the situation when we understand neural signaling pathways and other pathways and organs to calm the pain response. In fact there is little difference in dealing with physical or physiological pain than psychological pain. So you can use my book, Transforming Trauma, a drugless and creative path to healing PTS and ACE (adverse childhood experiences) as a way to heal. When we tap into the body's basic needs, making sure to stay on an anti-inflammatory diet, know out allergies and investigate the mind-body connection we can alleviate many of the sources that keep us in chronic pain. Sometimes it's as simple as being well hydrated (coconut water is amazing for this) and sometimes it's just know a certain thought or feeling gives rise to psychic distress. Observe yourself is a mantra I learned as a teenager when I started meditating and this practice can free you up in a way never thought possible. Mike shared with us how difficult it had been to face his problems head-on and how he had initially felt trapped in a cycle of negative thoughts and emotions. However, he began to open up about how his experiences exploring nature had really helped him to heal. He explained that when he first started going out into nature, it was simply to escape the stress and pressures of daily life. But as he started to spend more time in nature, he found that the world around him began to inspire a sense of peace and calm within him. Mike shared how he had always been drawn to the outdoors, but had never realized the full extent of its power to heal and restore. Through hunting, hiking, and boating, just to simply be out in the world around him, Mike found that he was able to finally begin to overcome his past struggles. As he spoke, I could sense a deep sense of gratitude and reverence for the natural world within him. He shared how his experiences exploring nature had helped him to become more aware of the present moment and how that awareness had helped him to start living a more fulfilling life. It was clear to me that Mike had discovered something truly special in his connection with the natural world. And as I listened to him speak, I couldn't help but feel inspired by the hope and healing that nature can offer us allTo reach Mikehttps://projectmindfullyoutdoors.co/podcasthttp://www.projectmindfullyoutdoors.co/Reaching out to Podcast Infusion HealthPensighthttps://pensight.com/x/infusionhealthWebsite http://infusionhealthpodcast.com/?fbclid=IwAR0q2WW-No0O4XRbgRNVdmgo0vhqWe're excited to have you with us for today's show, and we hope you'll tune in for more great discussions on FB! When we think about the benefits of exercise, we tend to think of what it does for our body, making us leaner, stronger, and healthier. But my guest is out to emphasize the powerful effect physical activity has on our brains too, and just how much our bodies and minds are connected.Dr. Jennifer Heisz is a professor, the director of the NeuroFit Lab which studies the effects of exercise on brain health, and the author of Move the Body, Heal the Mind. Today on the show, Jennifer and I first discuss how physical activity can help treat mental disorders. She shares the way that low to moderate intensity exercise can mitigate anxiety, and how short bouts of intense exercise can be used as exposure therapy for treating panic disorders. We also talk about the phenomenon of inflammation-induced depression, and how exercise can alleviate it. And Jennifer shares how exercise can strengthen someone's attempt at sobriety, as well as prevent addiction in the first place. From there, we turn to the way exercise can not only mitigate mental maladies but actually optimize the mind. Jennifer shares how physical activity fights aging, and can enhance your focus and creativity. We discuss how exercise can improve your sleep, how it can be used to shift your circadian clock, and whether it's okay to work out close to your bedtime.Resources Related to the EpisodeAoM Podcast #589: How Exercise Helps Us Find Happiness, Hope, Connection, and CourageAoM Podcast #741: The Exercise Prescription for Depression and AnxietyAoM Podcast #585: Inflammation, Saunas, and the New Science of DepressionAoM Podcast #775: We Need a P.E. Today Molly is joined by Dr. David Wiss, RDN and founder of Nutrition in Recovery, a group practice of RDNs that specialize in treating eating and substance use disorders. This will be an episode about emotions, gentleness, and full body care. Dr. Wiss shares his views about intuitive eating, how trauma plays out in our immune systems, and the connection between the gut and the brain. Dr. Wiss believes in healing one's body before anything else using food. He asserts that food addiction is a global epidemic as a result of how ultra processed a lot the food we are consuming is and how those foods are changing our reward expectancies and behaviors. This in turn can spike other addictive processes and cause inattentiveness and impulsivity. According to Dr. Weiss, everything is on a continuum and a spectrum, so in order to make real sustainable change, we need tailor-made hybrid models that meet a patient's biological and psychological needs. Molly and Dr. Weiss will also discuss artificial sweeteners and preparing for the holiday season. Key Highlights: Dr. Wiss talks about what fatherhood has been like and how his family is doing. Dr. Wiss's views on intuitive eating, its effect on diet culture, and how people experience it differently Why intuitive eating may not be for people who have struggled with food rules or feelings of distress around food How trauma exists in the body and how legacies of trauma can cause inflammation in the body Stability, consistency, and boundaries- Heal the body first Dr. Wiss's thoughts on food addiction- Where it comes from and how to address it What happens when we entangle dietary restraint and food addiction, and how to tell the difference between the two. Advice for entering the upcoming holiday season Episode Quotes: If someone has a lot of conflict, I call it a discrepancy, there's a discrepancy between what their mind wants to weigh and what their body actually weighs–that discrepancy can be 30 pounds, but it could also be 3 pounds. As long as that discrepancy exists, there's internal conflict, there's conflict around food, and it changes the physiology of eating. They're living in flight or fight, they're not in rest or digest, and it doesn't allow the healing to occur. - Dr. Wiss Connect with Dr. Wiss: Website: nutritioninrecovery.com Visit wisemindnutrition.com to learn more about Dr. Wiss's program designed for people interested in using nutrition to optimize mental health. TRIGGER WARNING: Some discussions involving CSA In this episode, I dive into ABDL role play and dl sensation play, what it is and how stigmas exist against those who enjoy this style of play. ABDL/dl play has become extremely popular and discussing it will remove some of the most common misconceptions, surrounding it. Bunny joins Me, as we discuss this and We/we each share personal stories that may be challenging to listen to but serve to lift everyone up, in the message of hope, healing and growth. We also talk about Star Trek's Prime Directive and how this would benefit society as a whole. Right?! We touch on dungeon safety, as we often do and the discuss the draw backs of mixing alcohol and drugs, in any D/s impact scenes. The biggest question is: Has Chastity Queen ever tried on a diaper in an ABDL session? Listen, to find out.* At the end of this episode we had some minor audio issues, but you can still hear the message. Bunny simply sounds like he's in a wind tunnel or Mr. Roboto from 1:25-1:30. Dr. Jennifer Heisz is a mother to one daughter and an expert in brain health. She is associate professor in the Department of Kinesiology at McMaster University and directs the NeuroFit Lab which focuses on the effects of exercise on brain health. Jennifer received her PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience from McMaster and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Brain Health and Aging at the Rotman Research Institute at Baycrest Hospital. Her research examines the effects of physical activity on mental health and cognition in young adults, older adults and individuals with Alzheimer's disease. She joins us today to discuss her first book, Move The Body, Heal The Mind, which explores her groundbreaking research on how fitness and exercise can combat mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, and dementia, as well as improve our focus, creativity and sleep.
This week I was excited to welcome Dr. Jennifer Heisz to the show to discuss her new book, Move the Body, Heal the Mind: Overcome Anxiety, Depression, and Dementia and Improve Focus, Creativity, and Sleep. This was a really motivating conversation about the incredible benefits of exercise and movement on not only our body's fitness but our brain's functions. Dr. Heisz unpacks a host of benefits that exercise has on cognitive functions, memory, creativity, and of course productivity. In addition to discussing the many benefits that movement and exercise can have on creativity and focus in our work lives, Dr. Heisz also discusses the litany of ways that exercise can reward the pleasure centers of our brain helping to both prevent and assist various behaviors associated with addiction. Jennifer also addresses the relationship between exercise and depression and how important it is to be aware of the rhythms of our movement and how they can change throughout the seasons. Dr. Jennifer Heisz is a leading expert on the neuroscience of exercise and is the Director of the NeuroFit Lab at McMaster University, which boasts one of the top kinesiology departments in the world. Structured around Dr. Heisz's personal journey from sedentary scholar to triathlete, the book combines anecdotes, research, and case studies to explain how exercise and the brain are intertwined. And, each chapter includes specialized workout regimens to help readers get started on their own fitness journey, whether they're looking to reduce stress/depression or improve their sleep. So So I think it helped me create those retreats or those air pockets in my life that I need. Because I tend to just be an over worker, I love what I do. There's a lot of need in the world. So it helped me be more present with myself and not let my mind be a runaway train. Thoughts on Breathing Above all, I love the box breathing method. So It's a nice four-count holding and then releasing. So The reason I like it so much is that it's sustainable because sometimes if I make things too grand and too complex, I might stay with it for a while, but then fall off track. So I was that loud person that would stand up if I saw someone being hurt. Understanding the impact on one's life when these things happen, and how to help teach social-emotional skills and kindness are things that weren't necessarily present on the school bus in the 1980s. So Therefore, mindfulness would have helped me probably be a little bit more self-compassionate, and it would have helped me deal with that override of anxiety and fear that I was doing in those moments. So I love the exercise of thinking like, what would your past self say to yourself? Or what would you want your future self to say to the now. If I could look back I would say to myself, this is going to help you develop your empathy, this is going to help you be more mindful in how you show up and you contribute to the world. Don't internalize the messages of the meanness of the people, doing this kind of bullying that doesn't define you. Your brain evolved to prevent you from moving, to conserve energy, because there was a time when humans needed a lot of energy to hunt and to gather food. We don't have to do that now, but the brain is still set up to conserve energy. But if you can overcome that resistance and MOVE you unlock the most powerful medicine in mental health. This episode explains how exercise can improve focus, memory, depression, anxiety and sleep. How much exercise you need to do. And some simple recommendations to encourage the release of the chemicals your brain wants more of. As always, I am delighted and honored to be spending this time with you. I recorded an episode on embodied cognition and the body's role in thought with Psychologist Rebecca Fincher-Kiefer. In that episode, we discuss the importance of using the body as a therapeutic tool for helping modulate difficult emotions or thoughts that people may encounter from chronic pain or other various chronic health conditions. As physical therapists, using the body as a tool for healing from pain or other conditions, whether it's physical or mental, is a big part of what we do. In this episode, we're going to go deeper into how to use the body, including how to use exercise and physical activity to improve pain as well as mental wellbeing with Dr. Jennifer Heisz. She is an expert in brain health. She's an Associate Professor and Canada research chair in Brain Health and Aging in the Department of Kinesiology at McMaster University. She directs the NeuroFitLab, which has attracted over $1 million to support her research program on the effects of exercise and physical activity on brain health. Her award-winning research examines the effects of physical activity on brain function to promote mental health and wellbeing in young adults, older adults and individuals with Alzheimer's disease. She has a new book coming out called Move The Body, Heal The Mind, which examines the latest research on how exercise can help you overcome anxiety, depression and dementia, improve focus and creativity, sleep better and even improve chronic pain. I read a lot of his work. I listened to his audiobook while I was cycling. Oh, yeah. Just that that consistent message, the power of now, you know, being in the present moment. That's been that that was a really helpful message to me at the time when I had discovered him. Effect on Emotions I would say that mindfulness helps me be less reactive to my emotions. So sure stressors still exist in my life, but I'm less reactive to them. And, and they their options rather than truce. And so it allows me to take a step back and decide how I want to react or not react. Thoughts on Breathing I talked about attention to breath in the book(Move The Body, Heal The Mind), and throughout the book, because this is a really helpful way to incorporate mindfulness into movement. Research shows that when we pay attention to the breath, it really helps to soothe a brain region called the amygdala, which is our fear and threat detection center in the brain. Paying attention to our breath, our prefrontal cortex, which is the logic part of our brain can help soothe that anxious amygdala so that we don't feel as afraid or anxious. About Meditation My book is called Move The Body, Heal The Mind, and is about exercise but exercise, in my opinion, is just one tool in the whole toolkit you can use to help support your mental health. And meditation is also another one, a very important one that I do every morning, I do a little bit of meditation, whether, depending on the time, I have five minutes, or 30 minutes, and just just reconnecting with, the center, reconnecting with a peace and calmness within me. That helps to reframe and refocus my mind for the day. So mindfulness has been such an important part of my life for a long time. And I think it's good direct brain training. It trains the brain, the thought patterns, so that you can have control over those thoughts. When we move our bodies in challenging ways, we do enter into the present moment more readily. And then there's a direct correlation we show in our research, between people who are more active and people who are more mindful. So they really do go hand in hand. Suggested Resources Book: A Year to Live: How to Live This Year as If It Were Your Last by Stephen Levine Book: Move The Body, Heal The Mind: Overcome Anxiety, Depression, and Dementia and Improve Focus, Creativity, and Sleep by Jennifer Heisz phD App: Breathe App: Muse Bullying Story The kids in my school were just, you know, they were just cruel. They would just sing a song, you know, it ain't over till the fat lady sings. “Come on, Jen sing.” But I think I was always able to just let it slide. I think nowadays, maybe, you know, my own thoughts are my own bully. That's the bullying that I need to be most mindful of, is the sort of negative self-talk that that can creep in. Especially when I'm stressed and anxious. So for sure, I would say these days, the bullying is is self induced. I certainly benefit from really stepping back from the thoughts and taking a very careful look at the accuracy of the thoughts and then potentially just sending them on their way, letting them float away. This week we are joined by Rebecca Jax to talk about sibling loss, and the importance of releasing trauma that is trapped in your body. Rebecca shares her story of losing her younger brother, Jack to suicide, and how this experience was a huge catalyst for her healing journey. We talk about how to navigate sibling loss and why it can sometimes be a lesser acknowledged form of grief. Today, Rebecca is a trauma informed grief and suicide loss mentor, guiding suicide loss survivors through their healing journey using holistic healing art forms and spiritual principles. What is fascinating about Rebecca and this conversation is how she has used her experience not only to help others, but to help heal herself. She shares how we can release trauma that becomes trapped in our bodies after a loss, how to connect with our loved ones spiritually and energetically and how to ask for signs.Whether you are experiencing sibling or suicide loss, or are simply interested in learning how to heal your body from trauma, this conversation will educate and inspire you.Come say hello to us on Instagram @goodmourningpodcast.www.goodmourning.com.auIf you are concerned about your health, please contact a medical professional. Mindset Mastery is now going to have weekly episodes! I can't wait to share double the episodes with you and if you'd like to be a guest yourself I would love to hear from you. Email rachel@thatcameragirl.com to get in touch. I can't wait to see you right back here again next week, until then, remember, we are only limited by what we believe we are limited.

One of my favorite "side effects" that I get to see for helping people improve their emotional coping skills is to see how their bodies respond. They can begin to heal! Everything from mystery pelvic pain, to reversal of Type 2 Diabetes start to resolve when our emotional pains and stress are given priority. In this episode, I explain just how that's possible and the very real miracles that I've seen when we can intentionally manage the day to day and even old traumatic stress experiences in our lives.
On this episode I sit down with a close family friend Altee and talk about her challenges as a woman going through a very difficult divorce and right in the midst of that separation giving birth to a little girl who would be diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. She talks about being completely alone and having to take care of her other child while dealing with a baby in the NICU and not having the support she needed. She has a very unique perspective on conflict and through the trials she faced she has ended up on a path that gives her the ability to help others through the healing and recovery process from the challenges they have undergone. I wanted to take a brief moment, off the top to acknowledge and address what's happening in my hometown in this moment. Born in Minneapolis, raised in the Twin Cities, and a life-long Minnesotan, I am, nay we all are still very much grappling with the heinous and horrendous tragedy that is the killing of George Floyd this past Monday, May 25th. I'm at once experiencing feelings of deep sadness and incredible helplessness after watching the now infamous footage of this horrific event and left desperately searching for a way to help make this right as I watch the city in which was born be burned to the ground and the very fabric of our community be torn apart. Many of you are now experiencing much the same in your own communities this very moment. Only through sobriety and recovery can I turn to the only answer that makes any real sense at all. I must turn to love, compassion, and put them into action. To that end our family will be donating food and supplies to my beloved South Minneapolis this very afternoon. This is a show about Sobriety, and Recovery and yet at our core what we attempt to embody is how to live in harmony with ourselves and others, how to act more out of kindness, tolerance, humility and ultimately love and less out of fear, animosity, and hate. The true purpose, desire, and mission of this show is to give you, the listener, of all ages, races, identities of gender hope that you too can recover and indeed the tools that work for you to truly thrive in the time we have on this earth. To that end, in this week's edition of the show we have a supremely informative, beneficial, timely and apropos discussion on the use of somatic experiencing to address the often chronic states of stress, anxiety, and the near constant mental ruminations that always seem to accompany these unwanted states of mind and body agitation. Many of us are trauma survivors and have endured adverse childhood experiences that contribute to feelings of stress and anxiety. These undesirable states may be even more prevalent and exacerbated due to the current pandemic and community strife we are all experiencing. Dr. Alice Kerby, a Doctor of Physical Therapy, a trauma practitioner, and a person in long term recovery shares how Somatic Experiencing can and does heal us from bottom up through incredibly simple and effective tools rooted in tuning in to the sensations of our bodies. These practices, when done regularly under professional guidance can profoundly change the way we feel in our own bodies AND minds, reduce, and eliminate chronic and acute stress and anxiety and ultimately improve our overall well-being, so Listen Up. RELAX. How often do you say, “I’m just going to get through the day.” You’re running on adrenaline. But it’s not sustainable. If you’re not relaxed, you’re not breathing. If you’re not breathing, you’re not getting oxygen. It’s a loop. You’re going to be exhausted all the time. On today’s episode of The School of Greatness, I talk about the power of breathing to heal our mind and body with a man known as “The Iceman:” Wim Hof. Wim Hof got his nickname “The Iceman” by breaking a number of records related to cold exposure. His feats include climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in shorts, running a half marathon above the Arctic Circle on his bare feet, and standing in a container while covered with ice cubes for more than 112 minutes. He developed the Wim Hof Method: a natural path to an optimal state of body and mind. He says that our brains have the power to guarantee us happiness, strength, and health. We can actually regulate our mind and the autonomous nervous system by breathing and being present. Shut Up. Go in. Feel. Be. Connect. So get ready to learn how to harness the power of the mind on Episode 799. Some Questions I Ask: How does creating stress on the body prevent disease? (4:00) What do you think about right before you get in the cold water? (8:30) Why did you get into the ice and breathing business? (16:30) Where do you feel the most loved in your life? In 1973 he started work on a commercial mushroom farm in Olympia, Washington. During the next 10 years, he became the production manager, responsible for the cultivation of over 2 million pounds of Agaricus mushrooms per year. He was also involved in the research and development of shiitake, oyster and enoki mushrooms which resulted in the earliest US fresh shiitake sales in 1978. Healthy Shame-Is the message, "When you make a mistake...you just made a mistake." It is focused on behavior, circumstances, etc. This shame is healthy for us as it helps us develop our consciousness and correct areas in our lives that need correction.Unhealthy Shame-Is the message, "When you make a mistake....YOU are a mistake." This is a statement of identity and has been found to be at the core of most of our emotional and behavioral difficulties. Toxic Shame's message is deceptive. We need to heal from the paralysis of shame in our lives in order to fully become the person we were designed to be....Not the person we were programed to be, but designed to be! We introduce this topic and new philosophies to help us live a masterful life. It is one thing to have the knowledge, but we also need to be equipped with tools and resources so we can apply our new understanding masterfully to our daily lives. You've probably heard the story that music can calm the beast but can it really? How does it work? Does it have other healing abilities? Music Therapy is not new. Studies first surfaced during World War II about treating war veterans with PTSD with music. Not just any music but specific music that would calm their minds. My guest on this show is a music therapist with the VNA (Visiting Nurse Association) of the Treasure Coast. She works with Hospice patients, Alzheimer and Dementia patients and those with Parkinson's to help them get walking and moving. How can you help those you love with music therapy? Listen in as Moreen shows us how you can make a difference with music. Yes she brought her guitar and yes she moved me to tears! Moreen Burkart is a board certified music therapist. Moreen received a Bachelor of Arts in Music Technology with minors in Psychology and Business as well as her Bachelor of Science in Music Therapy. As a music therapist, Moreen has worked with persons of all ages in a variety of settings including: day-cares, rehabilitation facilities, nursing homes, skilled nursing facilities, assisted living, memory care communities, 1:1 in-home, as well as hospice. Moreen created the music therapy position at Treasure Coast Hospice for their pediatric program and when the opportunity arose, Moreen was given the opportunity to create and implement the music therapy program at the VNA of the Treasure Coast. Made possible by the funding of Impact 100, Moreen now provides music therapy services for the VNA’s hospice patients and families as well as community music therapy groups and in-services. This past year she completed the Neurologic Music Therapy Institute, receiving the title Neurologic Music Therapist as well as attended the National American Music Therapy Conference, qualifying her to become a music therapy internship supervisor.
