Based in New Delhi, he leads Austrade across six South Asian markets, including India, after previously leading its work across Southeast Asia. Earlier, he founded and led Asialink Business and spent more than a decade at KPMG advising companies across Asia. Born in Bengaluru, Mukund moved to Australia as an international student at 18, later earning an MBA from MIT Sloan and pursuing a PhD at Melbourne Business School. In this conversation with Vidit, Mukund shares his unlikely journey from a cricket-obsessed teenager in Bengaluru to moving to Australia alone at 18 — where he struggled so badly that he almost left after his first year — and ultimately returning to India as a senior Australian diplomat. He reflects on working on an $8.5 billion deal at 23 that “broke” him, losing business pitches for nearly three years before the wins finally came, and being initially dismissed as too young before becoming Asialink Business CEO at 34. Mukund also explains why he still pursues a PhD despite a demanding career, what 55 pieces of “scathing” academic feedback taught him about staying humble, and the leadership lessons he learnt across 750 consultations with Nicholas Moore. They also explore why India offers a front-row seat to global competition, the rapidly growing commercial relationship between India and Australia, and what Mukund has learnt from building a career across some of Asia's most important markets. In Ep. 139, Ray Powell, Jim Carouso and guest co-host Nydia Ngiow of BowerGroupAsia sit down with Sir Nicholas Moore, the former Macquarie Group CEO who authored Australia's Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040 - the landmark report designed to expand Australian trade and investment across ASEAN.Sir Nicholas explains why Australian companies have historically overlooked Southeast Asia in favor of North America and Europe, even as the region's economies grow at 5-7% annually. He reveals that 50 of the report's 75 recommendations have already been acted upon by six Australian government ministries, signaling serious political commitment from the top.The conversation covers the 10 priority sectors identified in the strategy, including education, green energy, infrastructure, digital economy, agriculture and mining, with Moore highlighting examples like Australian universities establishing campuses across Vietnam, Indonesia and Malaysia, and deal teams in Jakarta, Singapore and Ho Chi Minh City helping investors navigate unfamiliar markets.Nydia brings the Southeast Asian perspective, probing how new trade agreements between Indonesia and the EU, Canada and the US could affect Australia's competitive position, and what Australia needs to do domestically, including streamlining its Foreign Investment Review Board, to attract more inbound ASEAN investment. The discussion turns to the bigger geopolitical picture: China's export surge into Southeast Asia, US tariff disruptions and the “China plus one” diversification trend that accelerated after COVID. Sir Nicholas offers a notably calm take on US tariffs, comparing their effect to a goods and services tax and suggesting the impact on ASEAN economies may be manageable. He closes by praising Southeast Asian governments' flexibility and adaptability in responding to shifting global trade dynamics.Essential listening for anyone tracking Indo-Pacific economic integration, ASEAN investment opportunities, Australia-Southeast Asia relations, US-China trade competition, and supply chain diversification in the region.

Nick's extraordinary journey has led him to become an expert and leader in the areas of vulnerability, self-love, and compassion. Along with sharing pieces of his incredibly vulnerable story, Nick shares his insights for overcoming the inner critic, letting go of the opinions of others, and how to gracefully ride the ever-changing waves of life. Nick grew up in Texas within a culture of racism, violence, and patriarchy. These ideals would continue to plague his psyche, until the uncontested power of personal suffering would lead him to his awakening. After witnessing an event and calling Child Protective Services on his father for allegedly sexual molesting his granddaughter and daughter; Nick was at his wit's end, suicidal, and looking for answers. Simply put, Nick's story and messages are incredibly powerful. He's changing the way the world views vulnerability; and most importantly, the way people view themselves.

August 6th, 2011. Wardak Province, Afghanistan. 15 SEAL Team 6 operators and 23 allied personnel traveled on board a helicopter with call sign “Extortion 17”. Tragically, the aircraft was struck by a Taliban-fired rocket-propelled grenade and crashed. Moments later, an urgent rescue mission was launched. HBH is honored to welcome the man who led that mission: author and retired US Army Ranger Sergeant First Class Nicholas Moore.Every mission and movement of SEAL Team 6, the Navy's most elite special forces unit, is classified. However, when Extortion 17 went down, all available personnel were alerted to their position.Nicholas and his team rushed to the location, contending with potential improvised explosive devices along the way. They hoped to help survivors among the 38 passengers of the twin-rotor Boeing CH-47 'Chinook' helicopter, including a service dog and its handler. The crash of Extortion 17 was the largest single loss of life in the history of both SEAL Team 6 and the Afghan War.We highly recommend Nicholas Moore's book, ‘Run to the Sound of the Guns: The True Story of an American Ranger at War in Afghanistan and Iraq'.
Welcome back! Today we are joined by Nicholas Moore, Nick is a partner in the real estate and private equity practice group handling virtually all transactions involving income-producing commercial real estate. With several years' experience, Nick represents local, regional, and national developers, owners, syndicators, general partners, limited partners, and investors as they acquire and divest commercial real estate through sophisticated transactions. He uses his experience to provide straightforward actionable and practical advice with the ability to refine clients' strategies for acquisitions, development, leasing, financing, and joint ventures. In this episode, Nick shares discuss the importance of being actively involved in a business venture. Nick stresses the importance of demonstrating engagement and participation in order to avoid appearing as if one is not involved in a business venture. Let's Dive in! [00:01 – 5:13] Opening Segment Who is Nick Moore? Moore started working in commercial real estate five years ago and has since developed a talent for working through real estate documents. He is a partner at a law firm, Robertson, and specializes in real estate transactional work. Nick has transacted over 200 million in transactional volume this year He has closed a transaction on Monday for an $18 million deal in Houston He has a private equity Joint Venture Partnership [05:13 - 12:15] How to Draft a Purchase and Sale Agreement You can draft up a PSA to document a real estate transaction. The PSA is an agreement between the buyer and seller that sets forth the terms of the purchase. A Purchase and Sale Agreement is the most formal type of real estate contract, and it is enforceable. Make Sure You Don't Lose a Deal in a Seller's Market You need to move from LLI to PSA as soon as you can. Create a timeframe where the PSA has to be distributed after LOI is executed. Don't accept any offers within that time period. Find council you if it's the first time, you can switch. [12:16 - 26:03] What to Expect When Joining a JV Partnership Disclosure is key on the front end, so try to communicate as much as possible Sellers should be aware of timelines and what is refundable before making offers Know the structure of the JV before making an offer Passive Investing Isn't Necessarily a Bad Thing If you're going to syndicate your business, make sure you have a Price Placement Memorandum (PPM) If you are a practitioner in a business partnership, there has to be some check and balance and fluidity in order to keep the business running smoothly. In order to be successful with the SEC, you need to make sure that you are actively involved in your business, even if you have delegated certain responsibilities to others. A member-managed LLC is a way for all of the members to collectively make decisions for the company, similar to how a quarterback by committee works [26:04 – 30:50] Closing Segment. SEC Requires Private Placement Memorandum to Include Comprehensive Disclosure The SEC has determined that only accredited investors can participate in private offerings, and the issuer means it's a company issuing the security. The Ppm is a disclosure document, and it references the company operating agreement. The best way to analogize it is your Ppm is the brochure, and your OA operating agreement is the fine print. You're signing a joint signature page to the operating agreement. You don't sign a Ppm. Morris believes that patience and gratitude are key virtues and wants his grandchildren to know this about him. Tweetable Quotes: “Try to have it as inclusive as you can upfront so that you're not changing expectations and things because it can, I've seen it sour sellers, and in a seller's market. That's the last thing you want.” – Nick Moore “You can find counsel, if it's the first time you can switch to us, if it's your second time, whatever the case may be. But give yourself that opportunity to source that PSA without losing your deal to somebody else who comes in the interim. – Nick Moore
