Bible Reading: Revelation 21:1-4, 18-27Just as Jaden was about to leave for school, he learned it had been canceled because of a furnace breakdown. "Why don't you come to work with me today," said Dad, who was a real estate agent. "I've got a couple house tours."That morning, they met Mr. and Mrs. Pearson, who were moving from another town. "Since our boys couldn't come along to look at houses, it will be good to have you with us, Jaden," said Mrs. Pearson. "One of our sons is about your age."Jaden didn't like the first house they toured. It was too big and fancy-looking for him. The second house seemed dark inside, and the rooms were small."Now this is my kind of house," Jaden said when they reached the third place. "That tree would be perfect for a treehouse!" The inside of the house was even better. "There are lots of hiding places in here," he said with shining eyes."I think you just made your first sale, Jaden," Mr. Pearson said after they looked around. "If you like this house, we're sure our boys will like it too."On Sunday, Jaden pulled a piece of paper out of his Bible after church. "You're not going to believe this, Dad. We had to make a real estate ad for heaven in Sunday school today. Want to see what I wrote?""Sure do." Dad took the paper and read it aloud. "A mansion built just for you on a street of gold. No bedrooms, because there is no night. No hospitals nearby, because there is no sickness. The entire city is decorated with fabulous jewels. Cost: Nothing! It has already been paid for by Jesus and is a gift to anyone who trusts in Him. Best of all, Jesus is there!"Dad smiled. "That's great! But don't forget that we advertise through our actions and attitude as well as our words. Just like Mr. and Mrs. Pearson saw how excited you were about that house, we can let others see the joy of having Jesus in our lives and the peace of knowing we will spend eternity with Him. And we can show them His love through our actions."Jaden nodded. "Then hopefully they'll want to spend eternity in heaven with Him too."–Linda WeddleHow About You?How many advertisements do you see in a day? Ads can make things sound too good to be true. But the good news that Jesus paid for our sins so we could spend eternity with Him is true! The Bible gives us a glimpse of what heaven will be like when Jesus gets rid of sin, sickness, and death forever and makes everything new. Let others see His love, joy, and peace in your life and tell them how they can live with Him forever too.Today's Key Verse:[Jesus] told them, "Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone." (NLT) (Mark 16:15)Today's Key Thought:Advertise your heavenly home
Bible Reading: Acts 20:17-21"The British are coming! The British are coming!" Jacob cried as he spurred his horse past Uncle Eric and thundered through the pasture back toward the barn. Uncle Eric soon caught up. "You must have learned about the Revolutionary War and how Paul Revere warned the colonists that enemy troops were coming," he said as they slowed the horses to a walk for the rest of the way in.Jacob grinned and nodded. "I wish I could have lived back then. Riding at night to warn people of danger must have been really exciting!"Uncle Eric shrugged. "Exciting, yes, but don't you think it sounds scary too? How many of us would really have dared to do that and risked getting captured?""I would have!" Jacob exclaimed as he dismounted and led his horse inside the barn to rub him down. "Maybe," said Uncle Eric thoughtfully. "But we have an even more important message to share with people, yet sometimes fear keeps me from sharing it."Jacob looked doubtful. "What do we have to tell people about?"Uncle Eric began to rub down his horse. "God has given Christians the task of sharing His message of love with the world. We need to tell people that Jesus died and rose again to free us from sin and that the only way we can be forgiven for our wrongs and have eternal life is by trusting in Him.""Oh!" Jacob frowned. "Won't they think we're kind of weird?""Do you think Paul Revere worried about what people might think when he warned them that the British were coming?" asked Uncle Eric. Jacob shook his head. "But we worry about things like that, don't we?" said Uncle Eric. "Our message is far more important than Paul Revere's, yet we often keep quiet out of fear of being embarrassed or judged. But time is short, just like it was for Paul Revere. Jesus is coming again one day to bring all those who trust in Him to live with Him forever, and no one knows when that will be. That's why we need to depend on Him to give us the courage to tell others about Him now."Jacob latched the door shut behind his horse and got an idea. "Next time we ride, maybe I'll shout, 'Jesus is coming! Jesus is coming!'"–Jean A. BurnsHow About You?Have you ever shared the message of Jesus's love and forgiveness with someone? God wants every single person on this planet to experience His love, and He wants us to be part of His work! If you trust Jesus as your Savior, you can ask Him to give you the words to say and the opportunity to share the good news of His love with others. Today's Key Verse:And then [Jesus] told them, "Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone." (NLT) (Mark 16:15 )Today's Key Thought:Share the message of Jesus
Bible Reading: Luke 12:15-21"La Noche Triste," murmured Harrison as his sister Cara entered the living room. "I gotta remember that--it might be on our test tomorrow.""What does it mean?" asked Cara."It's Spanish for 'The Night of Sorrows.' You'll learn about it next year," Harrison said as he closed his social studies book."Why is it called that?" Cara wanted to know."Well, it's something that happened more than four hundred years ago," said Harrison. "The Aztecs--one of the native people groups in Mexico--had a great city on an island. A Spanish leader by the name of Cortés was able to take his army into the city because the Aztec ruler thought the Spanish leader was a god. "But the Spanish were hungry for money and power, which made the Aztecs distrustful of them," Harrison continued. "After hearing rumors that the Aztecs might try to kill them, the Spanish attacked and killed a number of Aztec people at a festival. Then Cortés and his men knew they had to leave. But before they did, they loaded up all the gold they could carry. As they tried to escape, the Aztecs attacked them. Many Spanish soldiers tried to swim to the mainland, but they drowned because the weight of the gold pulled them down. It was called 'The Night of Sorrows' because more than half of the Spanish army died that night.""Wow! Why didn't they get rid of the gold when they realized it was weighing them down?" asked Cara.Harrison shrugged. "I don't know. I guess they were greedy and wanted to keep it.""It sounds like they had a lot in common with us today," said Dad, who had been listening. "Many of us try to get as much earthly treasure as we possibly can--even when it means other people get hurt. We seem to think money and the power that comes with it is more important than anything else, but we're never satisfied.""And there are lots of things money can't buy," said Cara. "The sermon in church last week was about that. Peace, joy, contentment, and especially the forgiveness of sins and living with God forever--we can only have those things by trusting in Jesus."Dad nodded. "Jesus is the only treasure that brings eternal life--and He gives it to us for free." –Jean A. BurnsHow About You?How important is money to you? Do you think it can buy you anything you want? If you think that, you're wrong. Some people spend their whole lives trying to get more and more money thinking it will make them happy, but the only way to have true joy and satisfaction is through Jesus Christ. Bible Reading: Proverbs 11:25; Mark 10:42-45; Ephesians 2:8-10Dana's mom turned off the main road onto a dirt driveway. A sign next to the driveway read "Hooves and Wheels." After she parked, Dana and her friend Christie climbed out of the minivan and ran to the big gray horse barn.Mrs. Sikes, the director of the equine therapy program, met them inside. "I'm so glad you two are here! I sure could use help. Would you please groom Starr for the first class?" She pointed to a pony in a nearby stall.Christie brushed Starr's reddish coat until it looked smooth and glossy while Dana scraped dirt and stones from each of the pony's hooves with a hoof pick. Christie placed a blanket and a saddle on Starr's back and tightened the girth under the pony's belly. Dana slipped a bridle over Starr's ears and placed a metal bit into his mouth. She led Starr to the mounting block. At the bottom of a wooden ramp, a girl sat in a wheelchair. A woman stood beside her. "This is Rebecca and her mom," Mrs. Sikes told them. She turned to the mother and daughter. "Dana and Christie are two of our volunteers." Rebecca gave them a shy smile. Dana had Starr stand still beside the platform. Mrs. Sikes pushed the wheelchair up the ramp, then she and another volunteer lifted Rebecca onto Starr's back. Rebecca held onto a leather handle as Starr was led to the riding ring. Christie and another volunteer walked on either side of Rebecca as she followed the riding instructor's directions--hands up, reach for Starr's ears, touch Starr's tail. When the lesson was over, Rebecca gave Starr a big kiss. "I had a great time volunteering today," Dana told her parents at dinner. "Helping people makes me feel good."Mom smiled. "That's because God created us to love Him, and one way we do that is by loving and serving others out of the love He has shown us. Jesus died on the cross for us, and He also served people in His day-to-day life when He was on earth. He fed the hungry, healed the sick, and even washed His friends' feet.""It's only out of God's love for us that we are able to love and serve others," Dad added. That night before bed, Dana prayed. "Thank you, Jesus, for loving me first and giving me a fun way to help others!"–Bonnie CarrHow About You?Have you had the opportunity to love others by serving them? Did it make you feel good? That's no surprise--God created us to love Him and to share His love with others. Jesus showed us that love by becoming the Perfect Servant for us. He wants everyone to know His vast love, and one way we can share it with others is through service. MIRACLE IN MOTION MARK 2:1-6 When Jesus returned to Capernaum several days later, the news spread quickly that he was back home. 2 Soon the house where he was staying was so packed with visitors that there was no more room, even outside the door. While he was preaching God’s word to them, 3 four men arrived carrying a paralyzed man on a mat. 4 They couldn’t bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, so they dug a hole through the roof above his head. Then they lowered the man on his mat, right down in front of Jesus. 5 Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralyzed man, “My child, your sins are forgiven.” (NLT) MARK 2:10 Then Jesus turned to the paralyzed man and said, 11 “Stand up, pick up your mat, and go home!” (NLT) MIRACLES CREATE KINGDOM MOMENTUM THAT CANNOT BE CONTAINED MARK 2:1-2 When Jesus returned to Capernaum several days later, the news spread quickly that he was back home. 2 Soon the house where he was staying was so packed with visitors that there was no more room, even outside the door. God desires to bring healing into our lives. Sometimes the healing we need is physical, but perhaps even more often, it's spiritual and emotional. We may need healing from painful situations that have happened to us, or from the effects of our own sinful choices. Bible Reading: Luke 5:4-11Josiah knew two things for sure about Gramps--he loved God and he loved to fish! Josiah couldn't wait to spend the weekend fishing with his grandpa. They were going to fish all day and then spend the night at the cabin on the lake."Hi, Gramps!" Josiah shouted as he jumped out of the car. Gramps gave Josiah a big hug, and then they headed over to the shed to get their fishing gear ready. "Ouch!" Josiah cried out."Be careful around those fishing hooks. They'll stick you," Gramps reminded him. After they had packed the car with their fishing gear and the rest of their supplies, Gramps said, "I think we have everything. Let's hit the road!"Grandma waved goodbye as they drove down the driveway. Gramps took full advantage of the thirty-minute drive to the cabin to remind Josiah of the fishing safety, fire safety, and cabin safety rules. Gramps had retired from the military, so structure and proper procedure were very important to him. When they got to the cabin, they unpacked the car and loaded the boat with their gear. "All right," said Gramps. "Let's go fishing!""Yes!" Josiah climbed into the little john boat, and Gramps pushed them out onto the water. The little motor hummed loudly as they roared across the lake. After baiting their hooks and casting their lines out, they both sat quietly for a few minutes, and before long, the fish started biting. By the end of the day, they had caught a whole cooler full of fish."Fish fry for dinner tonight!" Gramps announced. After dinner, Gramps and Josiah sat beside the campfire. "You know, Josiah, catching all those fish today reminded me of a story in the Bible." Gramps pulled a small Bible from his back pocket and read about how Jesus's disciples caught a huge amount of fish and then Jesus told them He would make them fishers of people."What does fishing for people mean, Gramps?""Jesus wants us to tell others about Him. He wants us to share the good news that He loves us and died and rose again to save us so they can know Him too."Josiah smiled. "Thank you for taking me fishing, Gramps--and for always reminding me how much Jesus loves me." -Lisa FullerHow About You?Do you know Jesus as your Savior? Bible Reading: Matthew 18:1-3; Mark 10:13-16I wish Mom wouldn't leave me home alone when she goes out at night, thought Ivy as she huddled under the ragged sheet on her bed. She felt her stomach rumble. Her mother had told her to find herself something to eat, but there hadn't been much in the cupboard other than a few crackers and peanut butter. Ivy hugged Ruffles, her teddy bear, close. "I'm so glad I got you back," she whispered. Ruffles was very old and worn, and Ivy's mother had tossed him into the trash. Just in time, Ivy had seen him there and rescued him.Ivy sighed. I wish every day were Wednesday, she thought. That was when Mrs. Adams came to the community center after school and taught a children's Bible club. "I love to hear about Jesus. He cares about everybody, even little kids and sick people," Ivy murmured as she remembered the Bible story Mrs. Adams had told the week before."A man came to Jesus with a terrible disease--leprosy. It was a very contagious disease, and those who had it were covered with ugly sores, so lepers were sent to live alone outside the city," Mrs. Adams had explained. "No one wanted to come near them or touch them. But Jesus loved the sick man, and He reached out, touched the leper, and healed him. Jesus loves you that much too. He came to our broken world to save us and give us a new life with Him, and He promises to be with us in our troubles."Ivy looked at her teddy bear. Mom thought Ruffles was ugly because he's old and his stuffing is leaking out, so she threw him away, she thought. A tear slipped down her cheek. Sometimes I wonder if she thinks I'm ugly too. Sometimes she acts like she doesn't even want me. Ivy thought again of the story of the leper, and another one Mrs. Adams had told about Jesus inviting little children to come to him when others tried to shoo them away. "Thank You for loving me, Jesus," whispered Ivy. "Thank You for being with me all the time, even when I don't feel you there. I'm so glad I'm never really alone."Ivy's lips curved up in a smile as she hugged Ruffles closer to her, and soon she fell asleep. -Carolyn E. Welcome to Day 1908 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom Fly Anyway – Daily Wisdom Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps. We are on Day 1908 of our Trek, and it's time to explore another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote and some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. Wisdom is the final frontier in gaining true knowledge. So we are on a daily trek to create a legacy of wisdom, seek out discernment and insights, and boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend; this is Gramps. Thanks for coming along on today's trek as we increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2016%3A16&version=NLT (Proverbs 16:16) How much better to get wisdom than gold, and sound judgment than silver! If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from Mary Kay Ash, and it is: Aerodynamically, the bumblebee shouldn't be able to fly, but the bumblebee doesn't know that, so it goes on flying anyway. Fly Anyway Most times in life, our limitations to achieving are self-imposed. We don't think we can do something, and sure enough, we can't do it. However, the opposite is also true, just like the bumblebee, who by aerodynamic laws should not b able to fly. Still, God's design and the bees' determination fly even when it is impossible. So don't let your limitations nor the limitations of others stifle your drive for success. By God's grace and power, coupled with your determination and persistence, fly anyway. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark%2010%3A27&version=NLT (Mark 10:27) Jesus looked at them intently and said, “Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But not with God. Everything is possible with God.” As you ponder this nugget of wisdom for yourself, please encourage your friends and family to join us and come along tomorrow for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.' Thanks for coming along on today's trek as we increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2016%3A16&version=NLT (Proverbs 16:16) How much better to get wisdom than gold, and sound judgment than silver! If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from an Anonymous Source, and it is: A true leader has the confidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions, and the compassion to listen to the needs of others. He does not set out to be a leader, but becomes one by the quality of his actions and the integrity of his intent. Character Traits Of A True Leader Being in a leadership position is not always easy. The fact is, it is pretty challenging at times. I have joked in the past that leadership would be easy if you didn't have to deal with people. However, that is what leadership is all about, as we all know. You must have unwavering confidence to lead well, even when no one agrees with you. In addition, you must have unshakeable courage in the face of the most challenging decisions. But you also must have deep compassion to facilitate the needs of others. A Biblically sound leader does not set out to be a great leader, but becomes one through the integrity of their intent and unquestionable quality of their actions. As we see the example in Scripture from the only perfect imager of God, we become a leader when we are willing to serve others. It is then that others will follow as you lead by facilitating Biblical precepts found in God's Word. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark+10%3A42-45&version=NLT (Mark 10:42-45) So Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers in this world lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them. But among you, it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave of everyone else. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.” As you ponder this nugget of wisdom for yourself, please encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along tomorrow for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.' Welcome to Day 1724 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to WisdomA Holy Life Shines – Daily WisdomWelcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps. We are on Day 1724 of our Trek, and it's time to explore another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. Wisdom is the final frontier in gaining true knowledge. We are on a daily trek to create a legacy of wisdom, seek out discernment and insights, and boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from Dwight L. Moody, and it is: A holy life will produce the deepest impression. Lighthouses blow no horns; they only shine. A Holy Life Shines As imagers of God, a lighthouse is such a great example of what our lives are to be like. It is God's spirit that will draw a person to himself, we are to be a light to shine brightly and show the way. Our lives will only show the way when our light is not obstructed by sin. The keeper of the lighthouse had to make sure that the power source was in place to energize the light, and that the light was always clean so it would shine as brightly as possible. God's Holy Spirit, who dwells in us, is the power source, and living lives unobstructed by sin will ensure that our light is shining each day brightly. We do not need to make a lot of noise, or create a lot of fanfare in order to reach others for Christ. We just need to keep shining each day. Stand your ground just as a lighthouse is built on a solid rock foundation. Be unmovable in your faith, while being flexible in your love for others. Live a life that is holy, which means to be set apart from God for His service. It is then you will make the deepest impression on others. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark+4%3A21-22&version=NLT (Mark 4:21-22) Then Jesus asked them, “Would anyone light a lamp and then put it under a basket or under a bed? Of course not! A lamp is placed on a stand, where its light will shine. For everything that is hidden will eventually be brought into the open, and every secret will be brought to light. Bible Reading: Mark 8:34-38"I need to pick up a few groceries before dropping you off at your game, Carter," said Mom as she turned in at the supermarket. "You can come in, but keep an eye on your little sister while I zip on ahead. I'll meet you at the checkout in ten minutes.""Okay," Carter said. "Come on, Ella." He took his sister's hand as they got out of the car."Look!" said Ella when they went into the store. "Candy!""Don't touch anything, Ella," Carter warned. As they turned down an aisle, they met one of Carter's classmates. "Hey, Brad," said Carter, and the two boys started talking.CRASH! Whirling around, Carter saw Ella sitting in the middle of a soup display. Cans were rolling everywhere. "Ella!" Carter yelled. "I told you not to touch!" Ella began to cry as Brad and Carter tried to restack the cans. A stock boy relieved them of the task, so Carter grabbed Ella and rushed to find Mom.That evening, Carter told Dad what happened at the store. "I was so embarrassed!" he said. "I just wanted to hide. I didn't want anyone to know Ella was my sister!"Ella frowned at her brother. "Carter yelled real loud at me and made me cry! So I was 'shamed of him too.""So you were ashamed of each other," said Dad. "Does that make you think of the Bible verses we read this morning?""Oh yeahthey said something about Jesus being ashamed of us, didn't they?" Carter replied.Dad nodded. "We sometimes seem to be afraid to let people know we love Jesus. We might be hesitant to tell them we have a relationship withHim because we're worried of what they might think of us. But the verses we read this morning say that if we're ashamed of Him, Jesus will be ashamed of us when He comes back again. That's a sobering thought, isn't it?""Yeah," said Carter. "When you think of all Jesus did for us, we should be glad to tell people about Him, no matter what anyone thinks or says.""That's right," said Dad. "He was willing to bear the shame of the cross so we could be saved and have eternal life. We should never be ashamed of Him." -Brenda DeckerHow About You?Do your words and actions show you're not ashamed of Jesus? Are you open about going to church and believing the Bible? Do you tell others about Jesus?Or are you embarrassed to be known as a Christian? Someday Jesus will come back as King. Will He be ashamed of you when He returns in glory? Live each day in a way that shows others you love and follow Him.Today's Key Verse:If anyone is ashamed of me and my message the Son of Man will be ashamed of that person when he returns in the glory of his Father. (NLT) (Mark 8:38)Today's Key Thought:Don't be ashamed of Jesus

Bible Reading: Luke 12:16-21CRASH! The sound of shattering glass echoed through the house. Bridger and his mom ran into the kitchen. "Oh, Faith! My new vase!" Mom exclaimed when they saw the little girl looking in dismay at pieces of a glass vase scattered all over the floor.Faith began to cry. "I didn't mean to drop it! It slid right out of my hands.""I see that," Mom said. "Right now I want you to go wait in your room before you get cut on this glass. I'll be there to talk to you in a minute, but first I need to clean up this mess." So Faith went to her room while Mom picked up the biggest pieces of broken glass and Bridger got the broom and dustpan."Faith should have known better than to touch the vase," Bridger said. "But since she picked it up, she should have hung on tight and not let it slip out of her hands. It's pretty valuable, isn't it? I meanit was." "It wasn't really that valuable," said Mom. "But I did like it." She looked thoughtful. "There's something much more valuable we each have to be very careful not to let slip away. Any idea what that would be?""HmmI'm guessing it's not anything we can buy with money," said Bridger slowly, trying to think of what it could be. "Time with the people we love, maybe?""That's a good answer," said Mom, "but I was thinking of our souls. God created each one of us with a soul, and it's not something we want to be careless with. Do you remember the story Jesus told of the rich man who was only interested in storing up plenty for himself and having a good time?"Bridger nodded. "God called him a fool, didn't He? And then that night, the man died.""Yes. That rich man provided for his life on earth but gave no thought to what would happen to his soul when he died. We don't want to make the same mistake and make life all about our own comfort and happiness only to have it all slip away. Our time on this earth is temporary, but life with Jesus is eternal. Our souls can only be saved by trusting in Him." (Barbara J. Westberg)How About You?Do you care about your soul--the part of you that goes on after your body dies? Having everything in the world is worth nothing if your soul is lost. It can only be saved by Jesus. When you trust in Him, He gives you eternal life--and one day He'll reunite your soul with a new body that will never die. Your soul is valuable--don't ignore it. Trust in Jesus today. Welcome to Day 1618 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom.A Flock of Egos – Daily WisdomWelcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! Wisdom is the final frontier in gaining true knowledge. Our mission is to create a legacy of wisdom, seek out discernment and insights, and boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend; this is Gramps. Thanks for coming along on our trek to increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2016%3A16&version=NLT (Proverbs 16:16) How much better to get wisdom than gold, and sound judgment than silver! Today is Day 1618 of our Trek, and it's time for another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget of wisdom: Today's quote is from Walter F. Light, and it is: Leadership is getting a flock of egos to fly in formation. A Flock of Egos You have probably heard it said that when trying to organize people that it is like herding cats. If you have ever tried to herd cats, you know that it is virtually impossible to do so. So it is with leadership, especially when you are a leader of leaders. It is the art and science of getting the massive egos of leaders to all head in the same general direction. Managing leaders is not an easy task to accomplish, but it is possible if the overall vision and mission are strong enough. Since you are dealing with competing egos in this situation, there has to be enough commonality in the mission to satisfy the team's combined ego. It is somewhat similar to a flock of geese where there is a defined order within the group, all moving in the same direction, but allowing the lead person to switch out as needed to create the best possible forward motion to a destination. Yes, there will be a lot of honking and noise within the flock, but as long as each member can be part of the overall objective, it is possible to have successful leadership. It has to be clear that division within the group is not beneficial. So it is with the building of God's kingdom on earth, we must be unified and have a clear focus on what is most important. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark+3%3A23-27&version=NLT (Mark 3:23-27) Jesus called them over and responded with an illustration. “How can Satan cast out Satan?” he asked. “A kingdom divided by civil war will collapse. Similarly, a family splintered by feuding will fall apart. And if Satan is divided and fights against himself, how can he stand? He would never survive. Let me illustrate this further. Who is powerful enough to enter the house of a strong man and plunder his goods? Only someone even stronger—someone who could tie him up and then plunder his house. Welcome to Day 1617 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to WisdomNeed for Status – Daily WisdomWelcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! Today is Day 1617 of our Trek, and it's time for another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from Calvin Miller, and it is: Careers, even religious careers, may become little more than forums for our own advancement. But how are we to deal with such ambition? Our longing after Christ must exceed our need for status in the world. Need for Status All of us crave to be accepted by others. Most of us yearn to have a level of status among our work associates, peers, friends, and family. It appears to be a burning need in our lives. I acknowledge that I struggle with the need for status, and it probably applies to you also. No career or leadership position is exempt, even pastors, priests, missionaries, and lay leaders within the church. For all of us who are Christ-followers, how do we reconcile this need for status with our desire to image God, as the perfect imager Jesus Christ did? In the New Testament Scripture, we certainly see that Jesus's closest companions and disciples struggled with the need for status. Think about the epic struggles and posturing between the ‘inner circle' of the disciples, Peter, James, and John. Think about the 12 sons of Jacob in the Old Testament who were constantly in a struggle for status to the point where they were willing to sell their brother Joseph into slavery. We are not immune to the same battle. As with any area of life, the first step to overcome our intense need for status is to acknowledge that it is an issue and that we desire to become less controlled by it. As Christ-followers and fellow imagers of God, our desire to fulfill those roles must be stronger than our need for status in the world. It may not be easy, but it is possible. If we desire to serve effectively in God's kingdom on earth, we need to be willing to serve humbly. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark+9%3A33-37&version=NLT (Mark 9:33-37) After they arrived at Capernaum and settled in a house, Jesus asked his disciples, “What were you discussing out on the road?” But they didn't answer, because they had been arguing about which of them was the greatest. He sat down, called the twelve disciples over to him, and said, “Whoever wants to be first must take last place and be the servant of everyone else.” Then he put a little child among them. Taking the child in his arms, he said to them, “Anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes not only me but also my Father who sent me.” As you ponder another bit of wisdom from Gramps, please encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along with us tomorrow for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.' Welcome to Day 1613 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom.A Driven Person – Daily WisdomWelcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! Today is Day 1613 of our Trek, and it's time for another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget of wisdom: Today's quote is from Gordon McDonald, and it is: No driven person could ever say what John the Baptiser said, because driven people have to keep gaining more and more attention, more and more power, more and more material assets. The seductions of the public life would have led to a competitive posture, but the original call to commitment from within spoke louder. A Driven Person I hate to admit it, but this quote hit a little too close to home. While my mindset is moderating somewhat as I mature both in age and my outlook on life, I still struggle with a very driven personality. I enjoy winning. I enjoy gaining attention. I appreciate material assets. I enjoy having authority and using it. I suspect that many of you have struggled with these same issues, regardless of whether you are introverted or extroverted. While there is nothing wrong with winning, gaining attention, material assets, or authority, our mindset, and motives that underlie the pursuit of them can lead us down an evil path. Just imagine if John the Baptiser had the attitude we do, how would that have impacted his life and relationship with his cousin, Jesus Christ. John was gaining ever-increasing popularity, with thousands coming to listen to him. Many of these same people believed in him and were baptized. It would have been effortless for him to start thinking that he was something special, which in God's eyes he was. That was not his position or calling in life. He was to be the proclaimer and forerunning of Jesus Christ, the Messiah. Yet, with his growing popularity, John could have thought it was all about him. Jesus even backed this up when he said in Luke 7:28 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke%207%3A28&version=NLT (Luke 7:28) I tell you, of all who have ever lived, none is greater than John. I know if Jesus said that about me, I would think I was pretty important. Fortunately, John understood his place in the creation and redemption story. Just to make sure that other people at the time also understood, God permitted John to be executed when his ministry was complete. There could be no confusion on who was the Messiah. In the second half of the verse above, Jesus focused on how vital His kingdom was when he said. Yet even the least person in the Kingdom of God is greater than he is! So I have to ask myself, and I will ask you also, are you an imager of God reflecting Jesus Christ in your life, or do you come off as an imager of yourself? I know I have work to do in this area, how about you? John the Baptist knew his position when he proclaimed in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark%201%3A7&version=NLT (Mark 1:7) John announced: “Someone is coming soon...

If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from Martin Luther King, Jr., and it is: "Even if they try to kill you, you develop the inner conviction that there are some things so precious, some things so eternally true that they are worth dying for. And if a person has not found something to die for, that person isn't fit to live! Worth Dying For These are pretty strong words, which were said by a man who had a firm conviction that we are all created as imagers of God. Because of his belief that every person should be treated with dignity and respect, he was willing to die for what he believed. In fact, Martin Luther King Jr. did die for his beliefs as he was assassinated on April 4, 1968. As Christ-followers, we should also have such a firm conviction for our faith that we are willing to be martyred instead of denying our believing loyalty for Jesus Christ and His kingdom. I can't speak for you, but although I would like to think my faith is that strong, I know my own weaknesses. If my life or the life of a family member were threatened, I am not convinced in my heart, that I would be willing to die. So I will ask you, what in your life is worth dying for? Is your faith in God, your believing loyalty in God through the sacrificial atonement of Jesus Christ strong enough that you would be willing to die? One last question, what in your life is also worth living for? Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark%208%3A34%2D36&version=NLT (Mark 8:34-36) Then, calling the crowd to join his disciples, he said, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me. If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake and for the sake of the Good News, you will save it. And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? As you ponder this nugget of wisdom for yourself, please encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along tomorrow for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.' Bible Reading: Mark 12:41-44"Are you two having fun?" William's aunt asked in between the fizzing and popping of the fireworks at their church's Funday Festival."Yes!" William and his new friend Petros exclaimed together."Another half hour before we need to go home," Aunt Rebecca reminded them. Petros and his family had only been in the country for a month, and William was showing his friend around the booths. Everyone from church had contributed something to sell to help raise funds for their church's mission program. There were toys, cakes, books, games, and many other things. Petros's dad was a trained chef, and his tasty food was proving to be very popular. "Let's hurry. I want to buy some puzzles," William said, dashing off with Petros.William bought a handful of books, some homemade marmalade for Aunt Rebecca, and some puzzles for himself. "Aren't you buying anything, Petros?" he asked, his hands bulging with his purchases."I'm looking," Petros replied quietly. "Five minutes, boys," Aunt Rebecca said when she spotted them again.Petros dashed off. He returned with three blueberry muffins and handed them to William's aunt. "Thank you," said Aunt Rebecca. "That's so thoughtful. We'll share them when we get home."Later, after eating the muffins at Aunt Rebecca's, Petros's dad came to pick him up. "I can't believe Petros did that!" William said after Petros had left. "He went to the festival knowing it was a fundraising event, and all he bought were those muffins.""Petros was very generous," Aunt Rebecca said."What makes you say that? He hardly bought anything.""Petros's dad has been struggling to find work since they got here. Petros had very little money and yet he spent all he had on muffins to share with us."William flushed, thinking of the money he had left over after buying lots of things for himself. "He was like the widow Jesus spoke about in the Bible, wasn't he? The one who gave all she had to the Lord." He sighed. "I'm sorry I judged him." "It's okay," Aunt Rebecca said. "You made a mistake. You only saw what you wanted to see, but God saw his generous heart.""Can I invite Petros over tomorrow so we can play some of the games I bought?""Great idea," said Aunt Rebecca. Cindy LeeHow About You?Have you ever felt embarrassed because you couldn't give as much as you'd like? Jesus assures us that the amount we give isn't what matters, but that it comes from the heart. Wisdom-Trek / Creating a Legacy Welcome to Day 1189 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom Waiting Prayerfully– Meditation Monday Wisdom – the final frontier to true knowledge. Welcome to Wisdom-Trek where our mission is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend, I am Guthrie Chamberlain, your captain on our journey to increase wisdom and create a living legacy. Thank you for joining us today as we explore wisdom on our 2nd millennium of podcasts. This is Day 1189 of our trek, and it is time for Meditation Monday. Taking time to relax, refocus, and reprioritize our lives is crucial in order to create a living legacy. For you, it may just be time alone for quiet reflection. You may utilize structured meditation practices. In my life, meditation includes reading and reflecting on God's Word and praying. It is a time, to renew my mind, refocus on what is most important, and make sure that I am nurturing my soul, mind, and body. As you come along with me on our trek each Meditation Monday, it is my hope and prayer that you too will experience a time for reflection and renewing of your mind. Do you have a problem with waiting patiently? I know that I do at times. It may stem from the fact that we have never learned to wait prayerfully. In today's meditation, let us consider… Waiting Prayerfully The Biblical writer Luke teaches us about the earliest believers waiting prayerfully in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Acts+1:14&version=NLT (Acts 1:14,) “They all met together and were constantly united in prayer, along with Mary, the mother of Jesus, several other women, and the brothers of Jesus.” Mark uses the same Greek word here translated “constantly” to describe a boat floating in the water, constantly waiting on Jesus in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark+3%3A9&version=NLT (Mark 3:9)., “Jesus instructed his disciples to have a boat ready so the crowd would not crush him.” The boat was “constantly” in the presence of Christ for His use. So are the Upper Room disciples. One day passes. Then two. Then a week. For all, they know a hundred more will come and go. But they aren't leaving. They constantly persist in the presence of Christ. The followers were willing to do one thing: wait in the right place for power. We are many times so reluctant to do what the early disciples did. Who has time to wait? Waiting requires trusting in God. We don't really like trusting in anyone other than ourselves. We groan at such a thought. But waiting doesn't mean inactivity—rather it is being in a constant vigil waiting to do kingdom work. While waiting, we pray and trust. Waiting means watching for him. If you are waiting on a bus, you are watching for the bus. If you are waiting on God, you are watching for God, searching for God, hoping in God, trusting in God. Great promises come to those who do. We are reminded of this in one of my favorite verses https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Isaiah+40%3A31&version=NLT (Isaiah [40:31]), But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint. To those who still struggle, God says, “Wait on me.” And wait in the right place. Jesus doesn't tell us to stay in Jerusalem, but he does tell us to stay honest, stay faithful, stay true, and trust in Him. Do you desire power for your life? It will come as you pray. For ten days, the disciples prayed. Ten days of prayer plus a few minutes of preaching led to three thousand saved souls. Maybe it is that perhaps we invert the numbers. We are prone to pray for a few minutes and preach for ten days. Not the apostles. Like the boat waiting for Christ, they lingered in his presence. They never left...
Wisdom-Trek / Creating a Legacy Welcome to Day 1149 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom Forgiving Others – Meditation Monday Wisdom – the final frontier to true knowledge. This is https://wisdom-trek.com/day-1149/ (Day 1149) of our trek, and it is time for Meditation Monday. Taking time to relax, refocus, and reprioritize our lives is crucial in order to create a living legacy. For you, it may just be time alone for quiet reflection. You may utilize structured meditation practices. In my life, meditation includes reading and reflecting on God's Word and praying. It is a time to renew my mind, refocus on what is most important, and make sure that I am nurturing my soul, mind, and body. As you come along with me on our trek each Meditation Monday, it is my hope and prayer that you too will experience a time for reflection and renewing of your mind. How easy is it for you to forgive others, especially when the offense was unwarranted? There is a clear example that we can follow, but it is still not easy. In today's meditation, let us consider… Forgiving Others For many people, forgiving others is very difficult, and they struggle with it daily. We would much rather see justice and lean towards revenge instead. Jesus clearly taught in what we refer to as the “Lord's Prayer” that our own forgiveness is tied to how we forgive those who have committed sin against us. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew+6:12&version=NLT (Matthew [6:12]) says, “And forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us.” The actions of others do not determine our role in the forgiveness process. Let me share with you the story of Jesus's crucifixion and His response to an abundance of unwarranted abuse. The dialogue that day was bitter. It was what we now refer to as “Good Friday,” although it seemed anything but good. From the onlookers https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew+27:40&version=NLT (Matthew [27:40],) “Look at you now!” they yelled at him. “You said you were going to destroy the Temple and rebuild it in three days. Well then, if you are the Son of God, save yourself and come down from the cross!” And in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark+15:32&version=NLT (Mark [15:32],) “Let this Messiah, this King of Israel, come down from the cross so we can see it and believe him!” Even the men who were crucified with Jesus ridiculed him.” Bitter words. Sharp with sarcasm. Hateful. Irreverent. Wasn't it enough that he was being crucified? Wasn't it enough that he was being shamed as a criminal? Were the nails insufficient? Was the crown of thorns too soft? Had the flogging been too short? For some, apparently so… Of all the scenes around the cross, this scene as it plays out in my mind always brings tears to my eyes. What kind of people, I ask myself, would mock a dying man? Who would be so base as to pour the salt of scorn upon open wounds? How low and perverted to sneer at one who is laced with pain… The words thrown that day were meant to wound. And there is nothing more painful than words meant to hurt… Jesus was God wrapped in flesh and had all the frailty of a human as he willingly submitted himself to such ridicule and abuse. What would your response have been in the same situation? One of Jesus's closest friends, who had denied Him tells us in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+Peter+2%3A23&version=NLT (1 Peter [2:23],) He did not retaliate when...
Wisdom-Trek / Creating a Legacy Welcome to Day 1120 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom Failure Gives Success Flavor – Wisdom Unplugged Wisdom – the final frontier to true knowledge. This is https://wisdom-trek.com/day-1120/ (Day 1120) of our trek, and it is time for our 3-minute mini trek called Wisdom Unplugged. This short nugget of wisdom includes an inspirational quote with a little bit of additional content for today's trek. Consider this your vitamin supplement of wisdom for today. So let's jump right in with today's nugget. Today's quote is from Truman Capote, and it is, “Failure is the condiment that gives success its flavor.” Failure Gives Success Flavor As summer approaches our minds go to cookouts on the grill where you can hear a plump juicy hamburger sizzling and smell the aroma wafting in the air. While a hamburger itself smells great, the flavor really becomes irresistible when it is seasoned properly with just the right seasoning. If you ate seasoning all by itself, it would not taste good or be something that you want to consume. When you properly add just the right amount of seasoning to a quality hamburger, though, it mixes with the juices and transforms that hamburger into a delightful meal that you want to devour. Success is much the same way. While success is desirable and tasty in itself, what really makes success so much better is when it has been flavored with the seasoning of failure. Failure makes success so much more desirable. Failure makes success both smell and taste so much better. Failure, when we are in the middle of it is not pleasant, just like eating seasoning by itself. But when you mix the failure into the juices of success, then the success is one that will be so much more savory. If seasoning loses its flavor, then the hamburger will not benefit from it. In the same way, if you do not learn the lessons of failure, then any potential successes will be hard to obtain. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark+9:50&version=NLT (Mark [9:50]) Salt is good for seasoning. But if it loses its flavor, how do you make it salty again? You must have the qualities of salt among yourselves and live in peace with each other.” That's a wrap for today's Wisdom Unplugged quote. Wisdom-Trek / Creating a Legacy Welcome to Day 1089 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom The God of Second Chances – Meditation Monday Wisdom – the final frontier to true knowledge. This is https://wisdom-trek.com/day-1089/ (Day 1089) of our trek, and it is time for Meditation Monday. Taking time to relax, refocus, and reprioritize our lives is crucial in order to create a living legacy. For you, it may just be time alone for quiet reflection. You may utilize structured meditation practices. In my life meditation includes reading and reflecting on God's Word and praying. It is a time to renew my mind, refocus on what is most important, and make sure that I am nurturing my soul, mind, and body. As you come along with me on our trek each Meditation Monday, it is my hope and prayer that you too will experience a time for reflection and renewing of your mind. There are times in our lives where we really blow it. We mess up and hurt those whom we love most and who are close to us. We usually will have an opportunity for a do-over, but those scars may stay with us for the remainder of our lives. In our Meditation Monday today I want us to reflect on… The God of Second Chances Have you ever read a familiar passage in the Bible, then all of a sudden it jumps out are you as if you were reading it for the first time? It nearly explodes in your mind with a new impact that you have never seen before. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark+16%3A1-8&version=NLT (Mark 16:1-8) is one such passage. Maybe it is the excitement of the resurrection and the empty tomb that makes another part of verse 7 so easily overlooked. Let me read this passage to you, “Saturday evening, when the Sabbath ended, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome went out and purchased burial spices so they could anoint Jesus' body. Very early on Sunday morning, just at sunrise, they went to the tomb. On the way, they were asking each other, ‘Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?’ But as they arrived, they looked up and saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled aside. When they entered the tomb, they saw a young man clothed in a white robe sitting on the right side. The women were shocked, but the angel said, ‘Don't be alarmed. You are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He isn't here! He is risen from the dead! Look, this is where they laid his body. Now go and tell his disciples, including Peter, that Jesus is going ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there, just as he told you before he died.’ The women fled from the tomb, trembling and bewildered, and they said nothing to anyone because they were too frightened.” Did you catch the last part of verse 7? “Now go and tell his disciples, including Peter, that Jesus is going ahead of you to Galilee.” Now tell me if that's not a hidden treasure. Remember that just three days prior to this event, Peter had denied that he even knew Jesus three times. In fact, he even swore his denial in a curse. What a line. It's as if all of heaven had watched Peter fall, and it's as if all of heaven wanted to help him back up again. In our modern day vernacular, it would read. “Be sure and tell Peter that he's not left out. Tell him that one (or even three) failure(s) doesn't make a flop.” He is not destroyed by this failure. What a relief for Peter! No wonder they call it the gospel of the second chance. We have the same...
Wisdom-Trek / Creating a Legacy Welcome to Day 1059 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom Alone With God – Meditation Monday Wisdom – the final frontier to true knowledge. This is https://wisdom-trek.com/day-1059/ (Day 1059) of our trek, and it is time for Meditation Monday. In our fast-paced, constant stimulus, technology-driven world, we have little time to be alone with ourselves or alone with God. In our Meditation Monday today, I want us to reflect on… Alone With God How long has it been since you went off to an isolated place to be with God? I mean really alone? No distractions. No background noise. No mobile phone. Just you and God. How long since you gave him a portion of undiluted, uninterrupted time listening for his voice? It is very difficult to do so, especially if you have children in your home constantly vying for your attention. It is important that we plan those times in our busy schedules, or it will not happen. We need to set the time aside to commune with God through prayer and to let Him speak to us through His Word. There is no substitute. It is a time of refreshment for renewing of your mind. It provides sustenance for spiritual strength. Is it really that important? Apparently, Jesus thought so. Although he was fully God, in his incarnation, he was also fully man. As a human in his flesh, he was subject to the weaknesses of body, mind, and soul as we are, and yet without sin. He made a deliberate effort to invest time with God. If you invest much time reading about the life of Jesus, a distinct pattern emerges. He invested regular time with God, praying and listening. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark+1:35&version=NLT (Mark 1:35 )says, “Before daybreak the next morning, Jesus got up and went out to an isolated place to pray.” https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke+5%3A16&version=NLT (Luke 5:16) tells us, “But Jesus often withdrew to the wilderness for prayer.” Let me ask the obvious. If Jesus, the Son of God, the sinless Savior of humankind, thought it worthwhile to clear his calendar to pray, wouldn't we be wise to do the same? That is a wrap for today's meditation. Next week we will continue our trek on https://wisdom-trek.com/day-1064/ (Meditation Monday) as we take time to reflect on what is most important in creating our living legacy. On https://wisdom-trek.com/day-1060/ (tomorrow's trek), we will explore another wisdom quote. This 3-minute wisdom supplement will assist you in becoming healthy, wealthy, and wise each day.
