Bible Reading: Psalm 51:6-10; Luke 11:37-41"Mom, can we go home now? I'm sooo bored!" Stella slumped against the seat of the car. "Stella, we're almost done--kids, look! A whole block sale!" Mom pulled the car over to the side of the road. Hayden excitedly pressed his nose against the window. "I love yard sailing!" The family got out of the car. Hayden ran straight to a model airplane. Stella stuck close to her mom as they looked at different mugs. Mom picked up one with a lid just as Hayden came running back. He and Stella both saw it at the same time, and the siblings gasped in unison. "That is the prettiest mug I've ever seen!" Stella exclaimed. "Mom, you have to get it!" Hayden said. "All right, fine." Mom laughed and brought the mug to the cashier. When the family arrived home, Stella asked, "Mom, can I please have the mug?" Mom smiled. "No, but if you clean it, you can be the first to drink out of it!" Stella's eyes sparkled. "Deal!" She ran excitedly to the sink. She opened the lid of the mug and immediately shut it. "Eww, it's all gross on the inside!" Mom came over and peered at the mug. "Kids, this is a perfect example of what I read during my devotions today! In the book of Matthew, Jesus told the Pharisees to first clean the inside of the cup, and then the outside will also be clean. What do you think that verse actually means?"Stella wrinkled her nose in thought. "Oh, I know! God wants what we look like on the inside to matter more to us than our outward appearance." Hayden's eyes widened. "God wants us to clean our insides?" Stella smirked. "No, silly. God sees our hearts, and that's what matters to Him." "Oh, I get it now!" said Hayden. "We need to let Jesus make us clean." "You got it," said Mom. "When we trust Jesus as our Savior, He cleans our sin away and pours His love into our hearts. Then our outward actions will make His love visible to others." She smiled. "Now, who wants some hot chocolate to go in that mug?" –Summer ColemanHow About You?Are you more concerned with your outward appearance and how others see you than with God and how He sees your heart? What's on the inside matters more because when we truly have a clean heart, it shows in the way we act and speak. How do you get a clean heart? By trusting in Jesus. Bible Reading: Psalm 107:8-9; Hebrews 5:12-14"Why does Pastor Evans have to preach such long sermons?" grumbled Jasper on the way home from church. "It's always so boring!""I actually wished Pastor Evans hadn't quit so soon," said Dad. "He helped me understand some verses that had been hard for me to grasp before.""Well, my Sunday school class is always really boring too," added Jasper."My class isn't boring," said his sister Karis. "Today we talked about the Israelites in the wilderness and learned a new song. What was your class about?"Jasper shrugged. "I don't know--I wasn't really paying attention."After lunch, Jasper put some scraps in the cat's food dish. "Come here, Mac! Look what I've got for you." The cat walked to the dish, sniffed the food, and walked away with his tail held high. Jasper shook his head. "That cat has no idea what's good," he muttered. Karis was standing at the window, looking out. "Come see the baby birds in their nest! The mother bird brought food for them, and they all have their mouths wide open!"Jasper went to look. "Well, they're way smarter than Mac. He wouldn't even taste the food I offered him.""I guess he's not hungry," said Karis."Grandma always says he's just finicky--choosy about his food. I'm sure he'd like what I gave him if he'd try it, but he won't."Mom walked up behind them. "That's probably why you were bored at church today while the rest of us got a lot out of it.""I was bored because Mac won't eat?" asked Jasper. "What do you mean?""What I mean is that, like the baby birds, we were hungry--we had hungry hearts. They were open and eager to hear from Jesus as we listened to see what spiritual food He was offering through our pastor and Sunday school teachers. But like Mac, you wouldn't even try it. You expected to be bored, so you didn't even bother listening and thinking about what was being said." Mom placed a hand on Jasper's shoulder. "Next time, how about really listening? Think about the lessons and how they apply to your life. Ask God to give you a hungry heart with an appetite for spiritual food."–Mary Rose Pearson How About You?When you read your Bible or go to church, is your heart open to learning what God wants to say to you? Or do you just count the minutes until it's over? Jesus wants to fill your heart with good spiritual food from His Word and remind you of His love and promises. But that can't happen if you close yourself off and refuse to listen. Trust Him to open your heart to His Word so He can nourish your soul.Today's Key Verse:Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled. Bible Reading: Psalm 139:7-12; Matthew 6:28-30Austin sighed as he dropped his backpack to the kitchen floor and sat down at the table. His family had moved recently, and he missed his old school and all the friends he'd left behind. "Did you have a good day?" Mom asked. Austin shook his head. "I know it's hard for you, Austin," Mom said. "Adjusting takes time.""I guess," said Austin. "But I don't think I'll ever like my new teacher as much as I liked Mr. Jackson. And the kids here play games I've never heard of!""Well, give your new school a chance," said Mom. "You've only been there a couple of days. And remember, Jesus is just as close to you here as He was before. Trust Him--He can help you." She opened the patio door. "Speaking of help, do you want help filling the planters with the flowers I bought today?" "Okay," said Austin. They got to work, and when the planting was finished, Austin stood and admired the bright petunias and geraniums. When Austin came home from school the next day, the plants were drooping. "Mom, what's wrong with the flowers we planted?" "Their roots were shocked when we repotted them," said Mom. "But they'll be all right. They'll adjust, and soon they'll look better than ever." She smiled at Austin. "How was your day?" "Well…" Austin paused as he recalled things that had happened that day--his teacher saying, "Good job," when she handed back his math paper, and two boys asking him to play basketball with them at recess. "You know what?" said Austin. "I think I'm kind of like those flowers. Moving here gave me a bit of a shock, but I'm adjusting.""Good," said Mom. She smiled. "Think about it this way--we give our flowers everything they need in their new pots because we want them to grow. And God loves you even more than we love our flowers! He gives His children everything we need too--Jesus has given us the Holy Spirit to help us and always be with us. He is with us during this transition. Keep talking to Jesus about it, and trust Him to help you grow." –Carolyn E. Yost How About You?Has a recent change in your life left you feeling shocked and upset? It's normal to feel sad or lonely when you leave behind what's familiar for the new and unknown. Be patient, and trust Jesus to help you adjust to your new situation and use it to help you grow. Bible Reading: Psalm 42:1-2; Matthew 5:6"Mommy, can I have some juice? Ivy made me thirsty! She gave me potato chips."Ivy grinned at her little brother. "You didn't have to eat them, Kylan.""Yes, I did," said Kylan. "You made me want them! You said they were so good, and you kept eating them and eating them. That's why I ate so many, and now I'm thirsty!""You can have some water," said Mom. She poured water into a cup and gave it to Kylan, then reached over and took a potato chip from the bowl in front of Ivy. "Did you know that Christians are supposed to be like potato chips?" she asked, holding up the chip in her hand before popping it into her mouth."What? That's silly." Ivy took another chip from the bowl and studied it. "How can anybody be like a potato chip?"Kylan grinned at his big sister. "I'd sure be thirsty if I ate a potato chip as big as you, Ivy. That would be a giant one!""Yes, it would," said Mom. "You'd probably have to drink a whole bucket of water!" She gave Kylan a playful jab. "Well, that's exactly how you're supposed to be like a potato chip--you should make people thirsty to know Jesus."Ivy frowned. "How are we supposed to do that?" she asked, taking a few more chips. "Potato chips make you thirsty because they're so salty, and Jesus calls His followers the salt of the earth," Mom explained. "If we're salt, we should make people thirsty for the joy, peace, and hope we have in Jesus.""I still don't get how to make them want that though," said Ivy."Kylan said you made him want the potato chips by telling him how good they were, right?" said Mom. "He also saw you keep eating them and that you enjoyed them.""I think I get it!" said Ivy. "We should tell our friends how great it is to know Jesus and let them see how glad we are to have Him in our lives.""That's it," said Mom. "Jesus is always with us, giving us joy, peace, and hope--even in difficult times. You want to make them thirsty and want what you have." Mom crunched another chip and smiled. –Mary L. Bible Reading: Matthew 5:14-16"Wow! Look at that!" exclaimed Leah. She and her father were taking their annual Christmas lights tour around the city. Dad pulled to the side of the street so they could get a good look at the house that had won the award for having the best display of lights. As they continued on their way, they agreed that no other place could compare to the house that won the award. The next day was the first day of Christmas vacation for Leah. "I'm glad we won't have school for a little while," she said at breakfast. "I can't do anything right at school. I don't read well, I can't spell, and I'm bad at math." She let out a long sigh. "I'm a failure." "Leah," said Dad, "I know school is hard for you, but…" He paused. "Go get your coat," he said as she finished her breakfast. "I want you to see something."Leah eagerly jumped up and went out to the car with her father. "Where are we going?" she asked as they drove through the city."You'll see," said Dad. Soon he pulled to the side of the street. "Do you recognize this place?""That's the house we saw last night--the one that had all the beautiful lights!" Leah said in surprise. "It looks different now. It doesn't look very special at all.""You're right," said Dad. "It's when we see the lights shining in the night that it looks beautiful. I thought about that when you said you couldn't do anything well. You see, we may not feel like we're all that special, especially when we aren't able to do things as well as we'd like--we might think we're as ordinary as that house looks right now. But Jesus loves us no matter what we can or can't do, and because we trust in Him, we have something special--we have the light of His love. People need to see that light--the light of Jesus in us." Dad smiled. "Leah, I want you to know that the love of Jesus shines through you--and that's much more important than getting good grades in school. You're a special light for Jesus shining brightly in the night."–Sara L. NelsonHow About You?Do you ever feel like a failure? Bible Reading: Luke 10:30-37As Molly and Asher passed a tall fence surrounding an empty lot on their way home from school, they heard the sound of crying. They peeked through one of the broken slats and were astonished to see the school bully, Ryan Taylor, sitting in the dirt and sobbing on the other side."Look," Molly whispered, pointing. "He busted his bike." The badly wrecked bike lay in a heap. Ryan had a skinned knee and blood on his face. Asher and Molly looked at him for a moment and then hurried on by, each secretly thinking that Ryan Taylor had finally gotten what he deserved. Not long after they got home, Molly and Asher heard Dad drive in. Molly and Asher hung back near the wall as Ryan told Dad that he lived with his grandmother. Soon Ryan and his wrecked bike were on their way home in Dad's car."I'm so glad your dad came along when he did," said Mom. "Not everyone helps people like your father does. He's really a Good Samaritan.""A Good Samaritan?" asked Molly."You mean like the man in the Bible who helped another man on the side of the road when no one else did?" asked Asher. "Yes," said Mom. "The priest and Levite in that story--religious leaders you'd expect would help--pretended not to see the man in trouble and just went on their way. But the Good Samaritan went out of his way to help him, and your dad is like that--he loves Jesus, and he knows Jesus loves everyone so much that He died for us and wants us to show His love to others, even those who don't seem like they deserve it."Molly and Asher looked at each other, knowing they should have helped Ryan. Then Asher had an idea. "Do you think Ryan would like to have my old blue bike? I haven't used it since I got my new one, but it's still good.""Good idea!" said Mom. Bible Reading: Matthew 19:23-26; John 13:34; Romans 5:6-8Bandit, Amelia's little piglet, lay in a box. Her faint, wheezing breath was the only clue that she was still alive. As Amelia hung a bulb over the box to give it heat, her cousin Ruby came in. She peered at the still form as Amelia explained what had happened. "That's horrible!" exclaimed Ruby. She watched Amelia take an eyedropper and trickle warm milk down the piglet's throat. Ruby sighed. "It's hopeless," she said, shaking her head."No! She could get better," said Amelia. Every couple of hours she would go to Bandit's box to feed and stroke the tiny piglet, looking for any signs of improvement. Even her parents began to doubt that Bandit would recover, but Amelia refused to give up, even getting up in the middle of the night to take care of her. Dad told her she should prepare for the worst, but Amelia kept hoping and praying that Bandit would get well. The next morning, Ruby came over to go to church with Amelia's family. "I want to show you something," said Amelia. She led the way to Bandit's box. "Look!" Ruby stared. There stood Bandit, wiggling and squealing for Amelia to hurry with some more food. "I don't believe it!" exclaimed Ruby. "She looked so hopeless yesterday. I was sure she was a goner!"Later that day, Ruby and Amelia took Bandit outside to get some fresh air. "You know Ryder, my foster brother?" Ruby said as she played with Bandit on the grass. "Well, I don't think I can stand him anymore! He's always getting in trouble, and he keeps lying and stealing our things. I don't think there's anything we can do for him. He's hopeless!""That's what you said about Bandit," said Amelia. "But it wasn't true. Bandit got better because I loved her and took care of her. God loves and cares for us much more than that! When we were all lost and hopeless, He sent Jesus to save us." Amelia looked at her cousin. "Why don't you try to help Ryder by praying for him and showing him you care? I'll pray for him too. That's what I did with Bandit, and Ryder is way more important than a pig. Don't give up on him--things are never hopeless with God." –Linda A. PriceHow About You?Do you know people who seem hopeless? Don't give up on them. Keep praying and helping them in any way you can. Be sure to share the good news of Jesus with them too. Bible Reading: Matthew 7:7-12Kiara wanted a pet bird--a green-winged macaw she could train and teach to talk. She prayed for one every night.Mom and Dad always shook their heads. "Macaws take a lot of work," they'd say. "And space."Kiara only wanted one gift. Why wouldn't they listen? Why wouldn't God answer her prayers? One morning, Dad knocked on Kiara's door. "Wake up! We're going somewhere special."Kiara jumped out of bed. After breakfast, they started driving. Kiara's heart sank when they passed the pet store. "I'm not getting a macaw?""No," Dad said. "We don't think that's the best choice."Kiara blinked fast, holding back tears."Here we are!" Mom said. They got out of the car and passed beneath an arch with the word Aviary on it. Kiara gasped. A walkway led between large enclosures that were fenced in from top to bottom. Each enclosure had its own sign--and its own type of bird. The aviary was a zoo for birds!"Do they have a green-winged macaw?" Kiara asked."They sure do," Mom said.Kiara ran to the macaw enclosure. She read the sign and learned the macaws used to live in a house, but when their owner couldn't care for them, the aviary took them in."They're probably happier here," Kiara said. "They have more space and lots of visitors." Mom and Dad nodded. "We thought you'd like coming here," Dad said. "If you want, we can get a membership. Then we can come a few times a month. What do you think?""Yes, please!" Kiara beamed and pulled her parents into a family hug.As she watched the macaws, Kiara thought about how Mom and Dad didn't always give her the gifts she asked for, and neither did God. Kiara remembered the Easter story, how Jesus died and His friends were sad because they thought they'd never see Him again. But Jesus dying and rising again was the best gift of all. I guess we don't always know what we need, Kiara thought. But God sure knows how to give good gifts. She smiled. Thank you, God, for answering my prayer. –Becca WierwilleHow About You?Have you ever felt like God didn't answer your prayer the way you wanted Him to? God wants us to talk to Him. He wants us to share our desires. But He doesn't always give us what we ask for. Sometimes, He has something better in mind--like how He sent Jesus to die for us so that we can enjoy His love forever. Enjoy the good gifts God gives you, even when they're unexpected.Today's Key Verse:If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him! Bible Reading: Matthew 5:13; John 3:16-17; Colossians 4:2-6"This sure is a good breakfast, Grandma," said Nathan, taking another bite of ham and eggs. "I love this ham you fixed!""Well, thank you," said Grandpa.Nathan grinned. "Sounds like you're taking credit for Grandma's cooking.""I'll take partial credit, and Grandma can have the rest." Grandpa grinned. "I cured this ham, and it's very good, if I do say so myself.""You cured it?" Nathan's eyes twinkled. "Was it sick?"Grandpa laughed. "I think you know that curing a ham refers to the process of preparing it so that it doesn't spoil and has a delicious flavor," he said as he took another slice of ham. "But did you know that you're supposed to be like this ham?""Be like the ham? Me?" Nathan looked puzzled. "What do you mean?""One main ingredient in the curing process is salt. It helps keep the ham from going bad and gives it flavor," Grandpa explained. "And in the Bible, Jesus calls believers the salt of the earth.""Does that mean we're supposed to keep the world from going bad?" asked Nathan. "How are we supposed to do that? It seems pretty bad already.""Yes, the world is full of pain and problems because people sin," said Grandpa. "When we look at all the hurt and hatred in the world, things can sometimes seem hopeless. But they're not hopeless, because Jesus died and rose again to save the world from sin. As Christians, we need to flavor the world with the hope of Jesus. We need to let others see His love in our lives and point them to Him. That's what it means to be the salt of the earth."Nathan smirked. "So, we need to be salty Christians?" Grandpa chuckled. "In a good way, yes. We need to trust and follow Jesus in everything we do and not follow the way of the world. Jesus said if salt loses its flavor, it's not good anymore. It's tasteless. That's why we need Him to fill our lives with the delicious flavor of His goodness and love."Nathan nodded. "Grandma, can you please pass the milk? This ham is making me thirsty!""Why do you think that is?" asked Grandma, reaching for the milk."Because of the salt," answered Nathan. "Popcorn does that too." He paused. "Hey! I get it! If we're salty Christians, we make others thirsty for Jesus!" – Mary Rose Pearson How About You?Are you a salty Christian? Are you flavoring the world with the hope of Jesus? Are you sharing His love with those around you? When others see His goodness in your life, it can make them want to know Jesus too. Trust Him to help you keep your salty flavor as you go out into the world so others will be thirsty for Him.Today's Key Verse:You are the salt of the earth. Bible Reading: Matthew 10:29-31; Hebrews 4:14-16It was raining, and Dante was bored. "Grandpa, this weather ruined our fishing," he complained. "What can I do now?" Grandpa settled back in his rocker. "Know any good riddles?" he asked.Dante thought for a minute. "What's black and white and red all over?"Grandpa snapped his fingers. "A newspaper," he said."Nope." Dante grinned. "An embarrassed zebra!" Grandpa laughed. "I know another one," said Dante. "What happens to a blue shoe that is thrown into the Red Sea?""Well, I believe blue and red mixed together make purple," said Grandpa. "So I guess the shoe turns purple?"Dante shook his head. "No, it gets wet." They both laughed, and then Dante asked, "Do you know any riddles, Grandpa?""Well, let's see." Grandpa reached into his pocket, pulled out his hand, and held out a closed fist. "In my hand there is something no one on earth has ever seen," he said. "The farmer who grew it, the grocer who sold it, your grandma who bought it--none of them has seen it. I have it in my hand, but I've never seen it either.""That can't be right!" said Dante. "Let me see it." Grandpa opened his hand. "It's a peanut!" exclaimed Dante. "Lots of people have seen that.""Lots of people have seen this peanut shell, but who's ever seen the peanut inside the shell?" asked Grandpa. Dante hadn't thought of that. "There is one Person who knows exactly what this peanut looks like though," Grandpa said. "Do you know who that is, Dante?""God!" Dante answered. "He knows everything, doesn't He?"Grandpa nodded. "He sure does. He even knows what you're feeling and thinking. God loves you, and His love is very special because He knows you so well. Jesus understands everything you go through because He experienced the same things we do when He became human to save us. He always knows exactly what you need.""He knows I needed a riddle to laugh about on a rainy day like this," said Dante. He eyed the peanut. "And He knows I'm hungry."Grandpa laughed and tossed him the peanut. "I guess it's time to crack that shell open and finally see the peanut inside!" -Marilyn J. Bible Reading: John 3:16; Romans 6:23; James 5:15"What are you two working on?" Mom asked as she set grocery bags on the counter. "Our Sunday school teacher gave us homework," answered Maddie. Abby, Maddie's best friend, looked up from her project. "But it's fun work," she added. Mom looked at the kitchen table. Glue sticks, scissors, sheets of tissue paper, a stack of thick white card stock, and gel pens in a variety of colors covered the surface. "What's the assignment?"Maddie put down the large egg shape she had cut out of card stock. "We're supposed to make invitations for the Easter service on Sunday. Mrs. Miller wants us to hand them out to our neighbors and friends who don't have a church."Abby also cut out an egg shape. "We decided to make our invitations look like Easter eggs. We'll decorate the front, and on the back we'll write the time and place."Mom watched as Maddie glued pink and purple tissue paper strips onto her egg, then added sequins down the center of each strip. Abby tore pieces of tissue and covered her paper egg with a mosaic of overlapping colors."What a great idea," said Mom. "These beautiful invitations can point people to the cure."Maddie put her glue stick down. "What cure?""Do our neighbors have a disease? Is it Covid?" asked Abby. Mom smiled. "We were all born with a disease. It's called sin, and it's deadly. Without the cure, this disease ends with death, so Jesus came to save us. He's the cure!""Is Jesus like that pink medicine I took for my earache?" asked Maddie."Sort of," said Mom. "Only much better."Abby looked confused. "How do we take Jesus?" "Remember when you and Maddie both trusted Jesus as your Savior at church camp last summer?" The girls nodded. "When you trusted in Him, He took away your sin," Mom told them. "He forgave you for the wrong things you've done and gave you eternal life. Now you never need to be afraid of death, because even though our bodies die, Jesus promises to raise you from the dead one day, just like He rose again on Easter Sunday."Maddie picked up her scissors. "I guess we need to make a bunch of these invitations so everyone can know about the cure!" -Bonnie CarrHow About You?Did you know that everyone is born with a disease called sin? You've probably heard a lot about disease and sickness these last few years, but sin is the most serious disease of all. It is deadly, and there is only one cure--Jesus. Those who trust in Him are cleansed of their sin and given eternal life. Trust Him to save you from sin. (To learn more, click the "Good News!" button in the right column of this page.) Bible Reading: 1 Corinthians 3:1-7; Hebrews 5:13-14"Hey, Mom," said Jose as he did his homeschool work at the kitchen table. "I just read the verses you assigned for my Bible lesson today, andwell, I don't get it! The apostle Paul says he has to talk to the people of Corinth like they're babies and feed them milk. That doesn't actually mean milk like we drink, does it?""No, but many of those people were acting like baby Christians," Mom said. "It's something likewait, I know!" She opened her laptop. "I recently came across a video that I think will help explain it." Mom started the video, and Jose saw a younger version of his dad. "It's September 16, and Jose is three years old," Dad said. "He's going to tell us what he did in Sunday school today."They heard some giggles, and then three-year-old Jose appeared on screen. "I played with toys, and builded with blocks, andand we sanged, and I sanged loud, and my teacher telled a story about Jesus."Jose laughed. "Is that really me?" he asked as the toddler went on to recite the ABCs. "I look so little!""You were little," said Mom. "You don't look like that or talk that way now, do you?"Jose shook his head. "I sure hope not!"Mom smiled. "It was cute then, but if you talked like that now, it wouldn't be cute anymore. And just like it's important to grow physically, it's also important to grow spiritually. Although many people in Corinth had been Christians for quite a while, they were acting and talking as though Christianity were something new to them.""So, they trusted in Jesus but weren't acting their age spiritually?" Jose asked."Apparently they argued over things--such as whether Paul or Apollos was the best preacher," said Mom. "We need to be careful not to be like that ourselves. It's a good idea for us to check and see how our own spiritual growth is coming along. Are we responding to the Holy Spirit as He urges us to turn from sin and encourages us to act more like Jesus? Or are we stubbornly choosing to do things our way?"Jose nodded. "I'd hate to be a three-year-old all my life, and I wouldn't want to be a baby Christian all my life either!" -Linda WeddleHow About You?Are you growing spiritually? Here are some questions to help you measure your growth: Do you have a deeper understanding of Jesus and what He's done for you than you did last year? Has God made you aware of a sin in your life that needed to be confessed? Are you eager to share your faith with others? As the Holy Spirit works in your heart, He'll help you put your childish ways behind you and make you more like Jesus.Today's Key Verse:Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled. (NKJV) (Matthew 5:6)Today's Key Thought:Grow spiritually

Bible Reading: Matthew 24:36-44"This vacation has been a blast," said Isaac as he and his dad walked down a narrow alley in a historic town, licking their ice cream cones. A minute later, Isaac pointed to a window overhead. "Dad! Look!" Dad looked up. An orange cat sat on the window sill, one paw hanging out. It seemed to take no notice of them but continued to stare out the open window. "What is it staring at, I wonder?" Dad murmured. Isaac shrugged, and they continued their walk. On the way back to their hotel, they passed the same building and found the cat still staring out the window. "That cat looks like it's waiting for something to happen," Isaac remarked. Dad nodded, and they watched the cat in silence for a few moments. "Excuse me!" said a voice behind them. They got out of the way as a boy on a bike rolled past and parked under the open window. The cat gave a loud meow and, to their shock, jumped down. The boy grinned and got off his bike. He picked up the cat, which continued to meow loudly. As the boy petted it, the meows fell into quiet purring.Isaac and Dad continued on their way, but Isaac kept thinking of the cat. "Sothat cat was just waiting for its owner to get back?" he asked.Dad nodded. "It obviously loves him and was watching for him to return." He paused, then added, "It reminds me that the Bible tells us to watch and wait. Jesus is coming back again, and He wants us to be on the lookout for Him.""Oh yeah!" Isaac said. "But that doesn't mean we should just sit around and wait like that cat did, does it?" "No," Dad said. "We need to point others to Jesus as we wait for Him to come again. Sadly, not everyone knows Jesus as their Savior. His return will not be a happy time for those who haven't put their trust in Him. We need to tell people Jesus loves them and that He died and rose again to save them so they can be ready for His return too."-Matthew WellsHow About You?Are you watching and waiting for Jesus to come again? He is coming to make everything new so all those who trust in Him can live with Him forever! Are you ready? Prepare for His return by trusting Him as your Savior. Bible Reading: Matthew 24:37-44; James 4:13-15"Mom," said Julian, "isn't that where we picked blackberries one day last summer?" He pointed out the car window to a field that looked familiar to him.Mom glanced over. "Sure is," she said."You know what else?" added Julian. "Driving home from picking berries that day was the last time I rode in the blue car.""The day before the accident," Mom said thoughtfully. Julian nodded. He remembered what had happened the day after they picked berries--his dad had gotten into an accident while driving the blue car. Thankfully, Dad had not been badly hurt, but the car had looked like a crushed tin can."The phone call we got that day sure was a surprise, wasn't it?" Julian said. "When we were driving home from picking berries, I had no idea that Dad would be hit by a truck the next day and the car would be smashed and I'd never ride in it again.""I'm sure that didn't occur to any of us," said Mom. "The Bible reminds us that we never know what will happen from day to day.""Yeah, it started out like an ordinary day," Julian said. "I had breakfast, and then I played outside. We were having lunch when--surprise! The day wasn't ordinary anymore."Mom smiled at Julian. "There's going to be a big surprise on another ordinary day," she said. "People will be doing ordinary, everyday things, expecting life to go on as it always has, and then suddenly" Mom snapped her fingers. "Jesus will come back."Julian nodded. "It could happen any day, couldn't it?""Yes, it could," said Mom. "It will be a terrible time for those who haven't put their trust in Jesus, but a great and wonderful event for those who are ready--for all who know Him as their Savior.""Which is why we need to tell others about Him," said Julian. "So they can be ready when He comes too."Mom nodded. "Exactly. Let's pray for those who don't knowJesus and tell them that they can be ready for His return by trusting in Him." -Violet E. NesdolyHow About You?If Jesus comes back today, will you be ready? Someday--some ordinary day--He will come again to judge the world and make everything new. Sin--the bad things you've done or thought--cannot be part of that new world, but Jesus took the punishment for all those bad things. Trust in Him so your sins can be forgiven. Then you can eagerly look forward to living with Him forever when He returns. Today's Key Verse:Be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect. Bible Reading: Matthew 14:22-33"Can we go upstairs soon?" Madison clutched her knees to her chest. She'd never liked the basement, and she didn't like sitting down here to wait out a storm.Jenny, Madison's babysitter, nodded. "Soon, Mads. The storm will pass over soon."Madison wasn't so sure. But then she had an idea. Last week's Sunday school lesson flashed through her mind--the story of how Jesus calmed the storm."I know what we have to do," Madison said. "We have to pray."Jenny smiled. "I think that's a great idea."Madison bowed her head. "God, please stop this storm right now. Amen." Then Madison stood and ran up the stairs. Jenny called after her, but Madison didn't look back. She had prayed. The storm was gone. But the moment Madison flung open the basement door, a bolt of lightning lit up the room. Madison cried out in fear. She turned around and ran back down to Jenny as fast as she could, eyes filled with tears."Why didn't God stop the storm?" Madison asked. "I don't understand."Jenny wiped Madison's tears away. "There's a story in the Bible where Jesus' friends are on a boat in the middle of a storm. Jesus walks out to them on the water and tells them not to be afraid, because He is with them. But you know what's crazy? He doesn't stop the storm right away. First, He invites his friend Peter to walk on the water to see Him, even though the storm is still going."Madison frowned. "Why did He wait to stop the storm?""I don't know, Mads. The point is, Jesus is always with us, even when the thunder keeps rumbling and the lightning keeps zigzagging through the sky."Madison thought about Jenny's words, and then she closed her eyes and said a new prayer. "God, please stop the storm. But even while it's still going, keep me safe with You."Before long, Madison's heart was calmer and her tears were gone. As the noises of the storm faded, she said one more prayer: "God, help me remember that I'm never alone in the storm." -Becca WierwilleHow About You?Have you ever been really afraid? But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father's will. 30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. 32 “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. 33 But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.  - Jesus is sending out his 12 Disciples to all the cities and villages to heal the sick, cast out demons, and preach the gospel. They are to declare to the Jews that “the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” - He has told them they will face persecution and people will betray them. They will be kicked out of the synagogues and may even be arrested, but Jesus says to them… - Matthew 10:22, And you will be hated by all for My name's sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved. 1. There is a fate worse than death. - Matthew 10:28, And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.  - Hell: The word being used here is the Greek “Gehenna”, which originally referred to a valley outside of Jerusalem where some of the Kings of Judah worshipped idols, and sacrificed their own children by fire to the Canaanite god Molech. - It was considered cursed, and was renamed “the Valley of Slaughter” before it was eventually destroyed by King Josiah.  - Judah was exiled to Babylon for 70 years, and upon their return, the Valley of Slaughter was re-purposed from a place of infanticide to an ever-burning rubbish heap. It became a place where corpses of criminals, dead animals, and all types of waste were thrown to be destroyed. - The Gehenna Valley was now a place of burning sewage, burning flesh, and maggot infested garbage. Utterly filthy, disgusting, the smell was sickening and the smoke burned their eyes. - This is the image Jesus used here as a depiction of hell, and eternal separation from God. - “Do not fear man” because the worst they can do is kill you. Can we even understand a concern like that within the context of our culture? Death!? - Example: When I joined the USMC, I had no reason to fear death on the battlefield. It was possible but seemed highly unlikely. That is a totally different story than post 9/11. - Example: India 2019: Hostile to Christians, describe trip, splitting up the team, preaching in the tea gardens and outskirts, hearing their stories: Pastor kidnapped and hung from rafters of his church, prominent family dragged out of their house and beaten to death… - There are many places your Christian faith can get you killed. Pray for them! 10:40am - Romans 8:31-39, What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? 33 Who shall bring a charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?  36 As it is written: “For Your sake we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.” 37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing,

https://youtu.be/Xr7D_SZiZDI - You may have had small faith in the past, but you can change that! You must be saved, believe the scriptures, and love and obey the Lord, and your faith will grow. Jesus, take the wheel (Matthew 8:23-27) *Verses in NKJV* Matthew 8:23-27, Now when He got into a boat, His disciples followed Him. 24 And suddenly a great tempest arose on the sea, so that the boat was covered with the waves. But He was asleep. 25 Then His disciples came to Him and awoke Him, saying, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!” 26 But He said to them, “Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?” Then He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. 27 So the men marveled, saying, “Who can this be, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?” #1. The storms of life will come.  - According to a study done in 1960, people are born with only two innate fears: falling and loud noises. The rest of our fears are “learned” as we grow up, as defense mechanisms to avoid danger. - Surveys say the top fears include: Public speaking, going to the dentist, snakes, spiders, and mice, and enclosed spaces. These fears focus on perceived danger, despite not actually being harmed. - In our story, the disciples, most of whom were fishermen, knew firsthand the dangers of storms. - A fierce squall or storm was not uncommon in the Sea of Galilee. It may have been unexpected, but it was not uncommon… the disciples knew they could lose everything in the open sea. - The first thing that stood out to me in these verses was verse 23, “Now when (Jesus) got into a boat, His disciples followed Him.”  (The potential for danger didn't stop them from following Jesus.) - It is difficult for our brains to recognize the difference between real danger and perceived danger. Example: Physical reactions from a GoPro video, or feeling pain when someone else falls hard. - Intellectually you know it isn't real, but your brain stills triggers your body's fight or flight mechanism, your heart races, hands get sweaty, adrenaline dumps, and you're ready for action! - Example, PTSD: September 2012, first in on a 12 y/o accidental hanging. My kids were 13 and 10. - Traumatic scene, triggered hypervigilance, stress, isolation and avoidance. - Constantly wanting to quit my job (flight), and always aggressively looking for danger (fight). - Constant worry and bracing for next trauma didn't help! It only made me weaker to resist. - I can't control the emergency calls I will be sent to, but I can control my thoughts and mind. - Phil. 4:6-8, Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things. - 2 Cor. 10:5b, …bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, - Fear will come. Work at controlling your thoughts, and eventually your body will follow. - Example, PTSD continued: I struggled for many years, and it was a difficult season for all of us. - I saw doctors, therapists, made job adjustments… I was told I should leave my job and that the pain and scares may never go away. - I sincerely prayed for years and tried to lay it down on the alter a dozen times, to no avail. - Then finally, at The Men's Advance a couple years ago, after 6 years, I laid it at the feet of Jesus and I was healed! (Men's Advance 2021 coming August 12-14, sign up on the App!) * I know the danger, and the very real potential to get hurt again, but just like the disciples I will continue to follow Jesus on to the boat. - 2 Tim 1:7,

https://youtu.be/Xr7D_SZiZDI - You may have had small faith in the past, but you can change that!

Bible Reading: Matthew 5:13-16James pulled out his chair and sat down, a smile playing on the corners of his mouth. He waited patiently as his dad offered a prayer of thanks and the food was passed around. Then James spoke up. "Please pass the sodium chloride," he said as seriously as he could manage."Pass what?" Dad laughed. "I know what you're talking about, but why did you use that term?"James laughed too. "We had a lesson on salt today, and I thought I'd ask for it by another name.""If you were trying to impress us," said Mom, "you did. At least I'm impressed.""Salt's important," James informed them. "It's used for lots of things.""Well, I know it's important in cooking," said Mom. "Salt is used to flavor food and also to keep it from spoiling.""Did you know that sodium chloride is mentioned in the Bible?" asked Dad."Yeah, Dad, but not by that name," said James. "It's just called plain old salt."Dad chuckled. "I'm sure you know the verse that says Christians are the salt of the earth. They help flavor things that happen in our world. Unless..." He stopped and looked at James. "Do you know what would keep them from doing that?""UhI think the verse says they can lose their flavor, right?" James asked.Dad nodded. "Any ideas how that might happen?" "How Christians can lose their saltiness?" James shrugged. "I'm not sure." "Well, think of it this way," said Mom. "What does it mean when it says Christians flavor the earth?""WellI guess we do that by helping people and being kind and loving," said James. "And by telling them about Jesus.""Right," said Mom. "When we share the love, grace, and truth of Jesus, we bring flavor to a bland world. We give people a taste of the salvation and hope He offers them.""So, I guess we'd lose our saltiness if we stopped doing those things and only thought of ourselves, right?" asked James.Dad nodded. "As the sodium chloride of the earth, we need to flavor people's lives with the love of Jesus." He sprinkled some salt on his potatoes and took a bite. "Mmm," he said. "Now that's good!" (Richard S. Maffeo)How About You?Are you sharing the flavor of God's love with the world? Is it evident in the way you treat others? Do your actions show that you follow Jesus? Do you tell others about Him so they can know Him too? Jesus didn't say you could be like salt if you wanted to be. He said you are the salt of the earth. Make sure your life reflects His love so others can know how good He is.Today's Key Verse:You are the salt of the earth. (NKJV) (Matthew 5:13)Today's Key Thought:Be a salty Christian

Bible Reading: Luke 6:27-36Nolan wore a big smile as he and Parker walked home together. Parker looked at his little brother. "What are you so happy about?" Nolan's grin grew even broader. "It worked! Pastor Dunn said we should pray for our enemies, so I've been praying for Derek ever since he knocked me off the swing last week.""Oh yeah? That's good to hear," said Parker."Derek's always mean--nobody likes him," said Nolan. "Anyway, I've been praying, and today Derek had to go to the hospital to have his appendix out, and he won't be back in school for a long time!""What has that got to do with your prayers?" asked Parker in surprise."God got him back for all the mean things he's done to me," Nolan explained.Parker frowned. "Waitdon't tell me you asked God to make something bad happen to Derek!" "Sure I did. Like the verse we learned at church says--'"Vengeance is Mine, I will repay," says the Lord.' I asked God to repay Derek, and He did it!" Nolan shrugged. "You don't think I'd pray for nice things to happen to him, do you?""I don't think you listened to everything Pastor Dunn said about praying for your enemies, Nolan. You're supposed to do good to them--be kind to them and not hate them. God doesn't want anyone to have to suffer His vengeance for the wrong things they do--He wants them to trust in Jesus, who took the punishment for all our sins. That's what you're supposed to pray for--that your enemies will know Jesus loves them and be saved."Nolan sighed. "It just seemed so good for something bad to happen to Derek for a change.""Well, you'd better keep praying for him," said Parker. "But this time ask God to help him get better fast. Okay?""Okay," Nolan said. "But I still think it will be nice not to have him around for a while!"Parker smiled and lightly boxed his little brother's arm. "Yeah? Well, maybe that is a good thing. It will give you time to think about how Jesus didn't make you pay for all the bad things you've done and how you can show His love to Derek when he gets back." (Deborah S. Marett)How About You?Do you know someone who is not a nice person? Would you like to see something bad happen to them? Pray for that person, not against them. Jesus tells us to love our enemies. That can be hard to do, but that's the kind of love Jesus showed us when He died to take the punishment for our sins. Don't wish vengeance on those who are unkind to you. Instead, love them and pray for them.Today's Key Verse:Love your enemies...and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you. (NKJV) (Matthew 5:44)Today's Key Thought:Pray for your enemies

Elsa pointed to the ground.Mom looked to the spot where the toddler had pointed and smiled. "That's a beautiful flower. Do you want to pick it, Elsa?""Pick it." Elsa's eyes lit up, and she squirmed down to the ground. She pulled on the flower. "Pretty!""Ahem," Mila said. "I asked you a question, Mom."Mom gave Mila's shoulder a squeeze. "I'll find a new job, Mila-girl.""Mommy's flower." Elsa held up the daisy she had picked.Mom smiled. "Thank you," she said. "Can you find a pretty flower for Mila?""Mila's flower!" Elsa tugged another flower out of the ground, roots and all.Mila looked to her mom as she took the flower. "How do you know you'll be able to find a new job?""Sweetheart, God will look out for us," Mom said. "The same God who made that beautiful butterfly and these beautiful flowers will make sure we have everything we need. Jesus promises to take care of us, and He's provided other believers through our church who can help us with our needs too. You don't need to worry."Mila tried not to worry, but a week later her mom still didn't have any word on a new job. Then another week went by. Just when Mila was starting to notice her mom getting nervous too, things changed, and her mom found a new job.Mila grabbed her Bible and pulled out the flower her sister had given her. She had put it between the pages to press it and save it.She looked at the flower and then at the verse that brought her comfort when she was scared. "God clothed the flowers," she whispered. "He feeds the birds." She ran her finger over the pressed flower, being careful not to break it. "He will clothe and feed us." Emily AckerHow About You?Do you find yourself worrying a lot? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. 14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. 1. What does it mean to be Salt?  - My dad had a heart attack at 39 years old. For most of my childhood I remember having “heart healthy dinners”. We never had salt on the table! Salt/sodium is bad for you, and bad for your heart and kidneys. - At 36 I decided I needed to get healthy, so I wouldn't have a heart attack too. I told my brother that, “I was cutting all sodium/salt out of my diet!” Dan told me that you really can't do that. - I was worried about “the white death”, and talked to my nephrologist about my concerns. I asked if I should be worried about the salt in ketchup. He said, “How much ketchup are you eating?!” - You need salt to live. “Not enough” is actually worse than “too much.” It is an essential element. - Salt is very valuable, and used for many reasons: - It is a great preservative and keeps meat and foods from spoiling, especially before there was refrigeration. (Prosciutto is nothing but pork, salt, and time! It's not even cooked.) - Salt makes EVERYTHING taste better and brings out the flavor of foods. From BBQ to salted caramel... (Ever tried chocolate covered bacon?!) - Salt is used to kill weeds on roads, kills poison ivy, can smother grease fires, sooth bee stings, clean tarnished copper, and 14,000 other uses… - In the Old Testament we see it also used for ceremonial offerings.  - Roman soldiers were sometimes paid in salt. Their monthly allowance was called “salarium”, (“sal” being Latin for salt). This is the root of the English word, “salary”. (Like the expression, “He's not worth his salt.”) - I could turn each one of these examples into some spiritually deep and symbolic message, but what is most important here is the point that Jesus was trying to make when he said these words. Matthew 5:13, “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. - The exact meaning of this statement is widely disputed, but I honestly don't understand why. It's not a riddle or a trick question. Jesus' overall point is actually pretty basic. - What good would salt be if it wasn't salty? No good. What good would Jesus' disciples be if they ceased to be a blessing and an example for Christ? Not good to the Kingdom of God. - Just before this Jesus told his disciples that they are blessed when they are being persecuted for His sake. “Rejoice and be exceedingly glad!”  Don't use hardship as an excuse to act like a spoiled brat. - Example: When Christians use being cheated or wronged as an excuse to behave badly… - In Luke, Jesus concludes his teaching on discipleship, and bearing one's cross, and forsaking all to follow Him, with this verse: - Luke 14:34-35, “Salt is good; but if the salt has lost its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? 35 It is neither fit for the land nor for the dunghill, but men throw it out. He who has ears to hear, let him hear!” - Again, Jesus used the example of salt having flavor in reference to being a proper disciple. - In Mark, Jesus was teaching how we should go to great lengths to avoid sin, and ends with this: - Mark 9:50, Salt is good, but if the salt loses its flavor, how will you season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace with one another.” - Jesus is using the example of “salt” to be an instruction on Christia...

Bible Reading: Matthew 6:1-4 Hannah and Gabe waited patiently while Mom unlocked the door to their apartment building. After working at the store all day, Mom walked wearily up the stairs. "I sure am tired tonight, and my feet hurt," she said. "I wish I didn't have to work on Saturdays. Did you kids have a good day at Gina's house?""It was fine," said Hannah. "Did you hear from Dad yet?" Their father had driven to a nearby city, hoping to find work. "Yes. He had a busy day too,"said Mom, "but no promise of a job yet." She sighed. "Well, I'd better get dinner started." Gabe sniffed the air. "Where is that good smell coming from?" When they reached the top of the stairs, they saw a box outside the door to their apartment. Mom opened it, and the delightful smell of potatoes and ham became stronger. "Who could have done this?" Mom wondered. "Look! Here's a card!" exclaimed Hannah. "It says, 'May God bless you and give you strength. All good gifts come from Him.' It isn't signed, but the card has our church name and logo printed on it.""But who at church made all this?" Gabe asked. "We have to figure it out so we can thank them.""That was my first thought too," said Mom as she carried the box inside and set it on the table. "But then I realized that whoever did this doesn't want us to know who they are. It wasn't done for praise or thanks. It was done as a service to God to encourage us and show us His love. I, for one, am very grateful.""Well, I'd at least want a thank-you if I did all that work," said Hannah."Me too," chimed in Gabe.Mom smiled. "It's nice to be appreciated for what we do, but this service was done in secret so all our thanks would go to God. Like the note says, all good things come from Him. Let's thank Him for sending this person to help us remember that. He's the one who will reward them, not us." Gabe grinned. "Okay. I'll set the table, and then we can thank God for the food--and for the secret servant who brought it to us!" Catherine RunyonHow About You?Can you do a kind deed for someone? I have a riddle for you."Miles slid off of the porch swing and walked down the steps to where his mother was on her knees, working in the flower bed. She wrote in the dirt with her finger: CH _ _ CH. "Do you know what this is?" she asked.Miles read the letters out loud. "C-H blank blank C-H." He looked at his mom. "That doesn't mean anything at all, does it?""You're right. It doesn't mean anything," said Mom."Aw, Mom," said Miles. "Then it isn't really a riddle.""That is, it means nothing until you put a couple of important letters on those blanks," added Mom. "What do you think they are?You can figure it out."Miles frowned and studied the letters in the dirt. "Well, a u and an r would make it church," he said."You've got it! Church!" Mom grinned. "You see, it means nothing until U R in it.""Until U R in" began Miles. Then he laughed. "Good one, Mom! U R needed in church.""Yes," said Mom. "We all rely on each other for encouragement, prayer, and strengthening our faith.""I always knew church was important," said Miles, "but I never thought about how important U R to church."Mom nodded. "You are, and so am I. Each one of us is important because together Christians make up the body of Christ--we're the ones who show the world who Jesus is. When we put aside our busy, everyday lives and meet with Jesus and other members of His family at church, we can find joy in the prayers, music, sermons, lessons, and fellowship. When it comes to physical illness and disease, we find in scripture that sometimes these issues were due to demonic causes and not physical causes.  If we want to continue to grow in our results and meeting up to the standard of Jesus, we must grow in our recognition of this so we can deal with these situations appropriately. A Love Story from ChristLuke 15:11-32 (NKJV) The Parable of the Prodigal SonA parable is a story that makes a point. Other than the point, we really cannot derive doctrine from the story. If we can find other Scriptures that are not parables that can substantiate some of the specifics of the story then we can derive useful doctrine for living. As we take a fresh look at the Parable of the Prodigal Son, I believe we can more fully understand how much God truly loves us; how much God truly loves you!The main character in the parable:1. The loving, forgiving father, whose character remains constant throughout the story, and is a picture of God the Father. 2. The younger son symbolizes the backslidden as he was previously a member of the family. 3. The elder brother represents the self-righteous. The prodigal son realizes he had no right to claim a blessing upon return to his father's household, nor does he have anything to offer, except a life of service, in repentance of his previous decisions. We see the father waiting for his son, perhaps daily searching the distant road, hoping for his appearance. The father notices him while he was still a long way off and ran to him. Obviously the father was longing for his son's return. When the father reaches his son, he throw his arms around him despite the stench sweat and pig's excrement. The father is so filled with joy at his son's return that he doesn't even allow his son to finish his confession. He doesn't question or lecture him; instead, he unconditionally forgives him and accepts him back into fellowship. God our Father greatly loves us, and patiently waits for us to repent so he can show us His great love.Ephesians 2:4-5 (NKJV)Titus 3:4-5 (NKJV)1 Peter 1:3 (NKJV)This prodigal son was satisfied to return home as a servant, but is restored back into the full privilege of being his father's son. He had been transformed from a state of destitution to complete restoration. That is what God's love does for us!The father orders the servants to bring:1. The best robe, (as sign of the prodigal's acceptance back into the family)2. A ring for the son's hand (a sign of authority and sonship) 3. Sandals for his feet (as only servants did not wear shoes.) All these things represent what we receive in Christ upon salvation: The robe of the Christ's righteousness:Isaiah 61:10 (NKJV)Romans 8:15 (NKJV)Galatians 4:4-5 (NKJV)Ephesians 1:4-6 (NKJV)The authority to drive out demons and heal the sick:Matthew 28:18-20 (NKJV)Matthew 21:19-21 (NKJV)Luke 10:18-19 (NKJV)Feet fitted with the preparation of the gospel of peace:Ephesians 6:14-15 (NKJV)Notice that the prodigal son was previously a member of the father's household. Unsaved or backslidden they both have been victimized by sin and through their choices have become enslaved to sin.It amazes me that the father would even recognize his emaciated son while he was still a long way off. I would think that his hair would be a mess, his clothing rags, his stride faltering from lack of nourishment and water. How do you picture yourself after you have sinned? Do you see yourself as a mess? Do you see yourself as spiritually emaciated having nothing to offer your heavenly Father for His mercy?God knows you. He knows you are flesh. When you sin He knows that you will return to Him. He is looking for your return. He is not waiting to tell you how stupid you are or how you should have known better. When the prodigal returned his father gave him a new robe. When we return God restores us with the robe of righteousness. He places a signet ring on our finger symbolizing the authority of His kingdom and he gives us shoes with which to take His kingdom to the lost.I would submit that we need all three in order to accomplish God's will for us. We obviously need the robe of righteousness that gives us right standing before God, allowing us to come boldly before His throne of grace. Hebrews 4:16When you pray do you come boldly with confidence before God's throne in time of need? One cannot do that looking at how deserving or undeserving they are. Do you pray as the elders in Luke 7:1-5 (NKJV)?The elders of the Jews did not have confidence to request Jesus' mercy and grace in time of need so they come before him attempting to convince Jesus as to how deserving the Centurion is. They replaced right relationship with Jesus, with works. We need the signet ring of God's kingdom that gives us the authority to do the works that Jesus did and even greater works than those. John 14:12But there is one more item that we need in order to use the previous three gifts that we received. That item is to understand how much God loves us! 1 John 3:1a (NKJV)Ephesians 3:17-19 (NKJV)I don't know what hurts are buried in your souls. I do know that God the Father is looking for you to turn to Him, to receive His forgiveness because Jesus Christ took it all onto himself on the cross. Like him you can say it is finished!
