My toothbrush has been talking to me lately. Should I be concerned?Aristotle said "Well begun is half done" but AriStevo says "Well begun is half done, but not even close to completely done". How we start our day, how we start our week, how we start our year is important if we want "life to be good", as Joe Walsh would sing, because well begun is half done. Not only has my New Year's theme this year been changing me for the better, I have also noticed that my themes from years past have been doing the same. So let's talk about that. You'll be encouraged, not to mention Happy you did. Please share with someone else who could use a little more Happy in their lives and let's change this world together. Here's the link to the Harvard review article I mentioned https://hbr.org/2025/01/the-insidious-effects-of-hurryingThe songs we used in this episode are "Are You Happy" by Primitive Radio Gods, "Life's Been Good" by Joe Walsh and "Make Someone Happy" by Jimmy Durante. Hey CEO…I don't know about you, but I was addicted to SPEED.No, not the drug kind, but the always-doing kind. You know- the always fitting more in, the forever checking more boxes, the constant being everywhere all-the time kind of speed- especially in my business cuz I had people to serve and goals to reach, you too? Except all that speed only resulted in one thing- HURRY SICKNESS. Perhaps you've heard my story of my diagnosis of Hystericus Globus where my ignoring of the signs I was always going too fast finally caught up with me. The same thing happened to my friend Jennifer Dukes Lee- except her doctor didn't try to hand her a pill to make it all go away. He told her it was a HEART problem, not as in the pumping blood kind, but the what she was running after kind. When I read her story in her book Growing Slow this summer and heard it took a diagnosis of hurry sickness for her too to finally embrace Growing Slow, I couldn't put the book down and had to invite her to be on the podcast. Jennifer Dukes Lee is the bestselling author of several books, including Growing Slow, It's All Under Control, and Stuff I'd Only Tell God. She's a fan of queso, bright lipstick, and singing too loudly to songs with great harmony. She lives on a fifth-generation family farm in Iowa, where she and her husband have made a life of growing crops, pigs, two beautiful humans, and an enduring faith. And you're about to listen in on a very real conversation as we walk through the 4 seasons, Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter on the farm and in our hearts and explore the purpose God has behind each one. I have a feeling this is one you're gonna want to listen to again and share with your BIZ BESTIES who also may be addicted to speed and suffering (undiagnosed) from HURRY SICKNESS…cuz I think we all do, especially when trying to scale a business to 6 figures and beyond. Psychologists and modern professionals of the modern world talk about this new(ish) term called "Hurry Sickness." What is it? Hurry Sickness can be defined as, "A discomfort or illness in which a person feels chronically short of time, and so tends to perform every task faster and to get flustered when encountering any kind of delay." -From John Mark Comer's book: The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry. Dan and Shane continue this series as they talk through some symptoms we all might experience from this overt need to 'hurry.'Don't forget to continue the conversation at home, in the car, at work, or anywhere you can find someone to talk to! In my book, An Unhurried Life, I wrote a chapter titled “Productivity: Unhurried Isn't Lazy,” in part, to speak to our tendency to assume that productivity is always about doing more and more and more. But what if true productivity is, at least in part, about doing qualitatively better work, even if it seems less busy than before? There is a cultural bias for always staying busy. I'm sharing the last of three episodes about sources of hurry in our lives. In the first two, I talked about how anxiety and insecurity are significant contributors, motors, or even viruses for hurry in our lives. Today, I'll talk about overwork as a third virus of hurry that is epidemic in our current context. ____________________________________________________Connect with Alan on LinkedIn or learn more about Unhurried Living programs on their website. In An Unhurried Leader, I shared that I've often been tempted to prove something about myself through the work I do. I behave as though my value is uncertain and needs to be earned or achieved. It isn't and it doesn't. To use a theological category, my worth is more a matter of grace rather than a matter of works. That sort of insecurity has been a major driver of hurry in my life. I wonder if you identify. Connect with Alan on LinkedIn or learn more about Unhurried Living programs on their website. Learn more about Unhurried Leaders membership.
As Pastor Shane prepares for his Sabbatical, he shared his sermon on Hurry Sickness/Sabbath. Listen as he explains the importance of Sabbath.
I've written and said plenty about the problem of hurry in our lives and in our world. There is a condition called hurry sickness, which is the feeling of always being rushed as though you were lagging behind in some race. This raises our stress levels. A sense that we don't have enough time for everything we have to do is a sign of hurry sickness. We can end up feeling increasing frustration with anyone or anything that gets in the way of what you have to do. Multitasking is one of our strategies to somehow boost productivity, at least in the short-term. But the long-term costs can be pretty high for our present hurry. In this episode and a couple of future ones this season, I'm going to talk about core drivers of hurry that I've been addressing in my own life since I wrote An Unhurried Life. Today, in the spirit of my new book A Non-Anxious Life, I'll unpack how anxiety drives hurry in our lives. ____________________________________________________Connect with Alan on LinkedIn or learn more about Unhurried Living programs on their website. This month we're taking a look at how we can detoxify our souls and impower our relationship with God. It's called Hurry Sickness and it is embedded in our Culture. Hey Winner, Are you enjoying the ruthless elimination of hurry as much as I am? Psychologists now have a label for what we're experiencing. They call it "hurry sickness." We have created our own disease! The definition I relate to? From an article in Psychology today: "A malaise in which a person feels chronically short of time, and so tends to perform every task faster and to get flustered when encountering any kind of delay." Let's talk about the 3 symptoms of hurry sickness and take a self-diagnosis of where we fall on the spectrum. Once we know what symptoms we have, we can do something about it. Do you have “hurry sickness”? Are you tempted to value time over people? When we do that, we actually miss out on what's really important in life. “The solution to an over busy life is not more time. It's to slow down and simplify our lives around what really matters.” - John Mark Comer Are you overwhelmed by the seemingly endless tasks ahead that you are always in a hurry to get things done? In this stage of anxiety and stress, were you able to accomplish what you needed to do or were you just running around aimlessly keeping yourself busy? If you answer yes to these questions, then you have hurry sickness, an affliction that has adversely affected most of us. It has often prevented us from living a happier, more meaningful life by deceiving us to think that what we have been doing is of the utmost importance, when in fact, it is quite the opposite. Join Dr. Ray Sylvester and me as we further explore the causes and dangers of hurry sickness. We will likewise provide you with ways to overcome it so that you can live a more intentional and fulfilling life. We want to help you find your purpose and recognise your value. Be the best version of yourself. Highlights: ⚡️ Hurry sickness is one of the prohibitors of stopping and a barrier to a purpose-driven intentional life. ⚡️ Hurry sickness can come from trauma and is sometimes a defense mechanism. ⚡️ Being on purpose means there is a time to stop and a time to perform. ⚡️ Purpose must be above performance. ⚡️ Hurry sickness affects what we feel, think, and do. ⚡️ Technology makes our lives busier and more complicated when we do not deal with it intentionally.

Beneath thoughts and emotions are our "positions or postures" in life. These are our unconscious assumptions. They guide the emotions and thoughts that occur from them. One posture is that I will feel good when I accomplish my goal. By holding that posture one has to squelch their innate joy of Being which always feels good in order to wait until that task is fulfilled. This can include spiritual practices. " I will feel good after my meditation". Implying I can't just feel good now. Lots of implications and aspects come out in this live discussion.

As I was researching for this episode I discovered the phrase hurry sickness, which I honestly had never heard of before… but once I started reading about it I knew it was all too familiar. Hurry sickness is “characterized by chronic rushing and anxiousness and an overwhelming, persistent sense of urgency — even when there's no need to be moving so fast.” If you're somebody who is high-achieving with a Type A personality, you might be able to relate to this. Dennis and Lisa are looking back at the most popular podcast episodes in 2022 and this conversation about the ruthless elimination of hurry was number one. Dennis and Lisa return with a powerful discussion of a condition coined by cardiologist Dr. Meyer Friedman, “hurry sickness.” This nonmedical terminology refers to a harrying sense of time urgency but it can lead to real medical issues, including a correlation with heart conditions. Thankfully, there is hope for recovery. This week's episode provides five key strategies to help you beat hurry sickness and keep it from impacting your daily life. The Leadership Development Group is a consulting firm led by Dennis and Lisa McIntee that exists to help you create a better work culture through drama free strategies, leadership coaching, and training. Do you ever feel like you're constantly in a hurry? Like you never have enough time for everything? Overwhelmed and stressed out? If so, then you may be experiencing what's called "hurry sickness." Unfortunately, hurry sickness is becoming increasingly common as our society becomes more and more fast-paced. But what is hurry sickness and why is it such a big deal? And most importantly, what can we do to address it and prevent burnout? Listen in to find out.
We all know we are probably a bit too busy or distracted for our own good. But did you know that hurry can actually hurt your soul? Rushing through life does damage to our relationship with God, others, and ourselves. We must learn the secret of Jesus' easy yoke and break free from a culture defined by hurry sickness. Title: Hurry Sickness Series: No Hurry Text: Matthew 11:28-30 Speaker: Josh Branham
Would you feel comfortable allowing people in your church to take real ownership, to the point where they might fail? And how might doing so free you from the "worldiness of busyness," or the disease so common to pastors called "hurry sickness?" Pastor Jeff Simpson shares some intriguing thoughts for pastors, lay leaders and ministry leaders.
Scripture and Questions for Study and Reflection: Read Luke 10: 38-42. 1. This new sermon series is based on the RightNow Media video series entitled “The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry.” What does “hurry” mean to you in this context? Why must we be ruthless in eliminating it? 2. Dallas Willard said, “Hurry is the great enemy of spiritual life in our day.” What do you think he meant by that? Do you agree? When have you experienced this yourself? 3. Dallas Willard described Jesus in one word, as “relaxed.” What do you think he meant by that? What can we learn from that regarding how to live our own lives? 4. Who do you relate to more in today's passage, Mary or Martha? Why? 5. Pastor Mick said again this week that the devil deals in distractions. What does he mean by that? In what way was Martha distracted in today's text? What did Jesus have to say about that? What distracts you in life? 6. In this week's video, Comer connects Martha's attitude with what's going on in our society today, by saying, “Hurry is the issue underlying so many of the other issues of our day.” What do you think he meant by that? Do you agree? Can you remember some of the issues he outlined? 7. Pastor Mick shared that a classic symptom of “Chronic Busyness,” or “Hurry Sickness,” is reacting poorly to interruptions. How do you react to interruptions? How did Jesus react to interruptions? 8. Pastor Mick said that Jesus wasn't so much chastising Martha as He was inviting her to a reprioritized way of living. What steps can you take to “ruthlessly eliminate hurry” and make spending quality time with Jesus your first priority in life? Prayer for the Week: Lord Jesus, we confess that we suffer from “Chronic Busyness” and “Hurry Sickness.” The fast-paced, frenetic lifestyle we often live is exhausting. Even worse, it is distracting, taking our focus off of you and placing it on ourselves and the world. We desperately want to be like Mary, but far too often we are more like Martha. Please forgive us and help us. Grant us the wisdom and the courage to choose what is better. Help us to relax, so we can live and love the way you modeled for us. Help us to experience the fullness of your grace and peace, so that we might share your love with the world. We pray all of this in your precious, holy and strong name, Lord Jesus. Amen.

The fast pace of our lives cuts off our connection to God, each other, and our own souls. Because we are programmed, prompted and pressured to do more and desire more and produce more, Jesus invites us to move away from hurry and into sabbath.
Hurry sickness clutters our schedules, our homes, and our hearts. But when we trust our good and generous God to richly provide for our needs, we stop hustling to accumulate more in our own power. Jesus invites us to move away from hurry and into simplicity.
Jesus invites us to move away from hurry and into solitude where we can be more present with God and ourselves. Solitude is a unique place to remember who we are in Jesus and open ourselves to the transformational work he is doing in us.
CPC's Vision Director Rachel Almeida joins Kevin and Brandon to talk through this past Sunday's sermon. They explore what it looks like to practice the kingdom and find connection with God in a world constantly competing for our attention. Highlights Silence, Solitude, and Hurry-Sickness - 5:40 The importance of silence and solitude in modern life. How can we move out of hurrying and into the presence of God? Disconnect to Connect with God - 18:10 Eremos: How Jesus practiced the Kingdom. The role of prayer in connecting us to God. What does this look like in real life? - 26:50 The practice of prayer and teaching our brains to tune in. Engaging with Jesus versus performing for Jesus. Quotables “Can you ever really imagine Jesus busy? When you think about the life of Jesus, you can't ever really imagine him rushing around.” “Solitude affords us that opportunity to unplug to both assess our life as well as become comfortable with inefficiency.” “If we want the life of Jesus, we have to take on the lifestyle of Jesus” - Dallas Willard “The more I'm connected with God, the more I have his perspective and his priorities… from that flows everything else.” Resources & References The Difference between Busy and Hurry (article) Eremos meaning Dallas Willard - theologian and philosopher
Hurry sickness is always striving but never arriving. The fast pace of our lives cuts off our connection to God, each other, and our own souls. Jesus invites us to move away from hurry and into stillness.
Waiting Room to Upper Room God doesn't own a watch, still He is never too late or never too early Dr. Larry Dossey, a Dallas internist, coined a new term called - “Hurry Sickness,” which he defines as “an increased sensitivity to the passage of time.” Silence around is the right atmosphere for a personal and intimate encounter with Jesus. Go… But First, Wait Acts 1:4 “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.” LUKE 24:49 “I AM GOING TO SEND YOU WHAT MY FATHER HAS PROMISED; BUT STAY IN THE CITY UNTIL YOU HAVE BEEN CLOTHED WITH POWER FROM ON HIGH.” While we are waiting, God is working YOU CAN BE STILL BECAUSE HE IS ACTIVE, AND YOU CAN REST BECAUSE HE IS BUSY WAITING ON GOD REQUIRES US TO PUT ASIDE OUR WAY OF DOING THINGS AND TRUST HIS TIMING AND PLAN. “There is a promise waiting you, do not quit “Wait until something happens” We cannot go; we cannot accomplish anything; we cannot rightly witness – if God doesn't show up, empower us, and do what only God can do. Acts 1:12-14 They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers”
In this episode, I had an enjoyable and enlightening discussion with Zach Beach. Zach has the Learn to Love podcast, is author of The Seven Lessons of Love, and is a love coach. Zach said many valuable things, including these two important quotes: "Love is the reason we are here on this planet.", and "We are here to learn to be (better) human beings." In between those 2 quotes, we talked about many things, including unconditional love and what it is, the power of intention, his book The Seven Lessons of Love, yoga, spiritual learning, the loving kindness meditation, "new relationship" energy, his new poetry book (Pebbles), and more. He read a short but delightful poem (from his new book) that teaches us in a succinct, zen-like way. Especially applicable to everyone is a simple technique that Zach taught us to help us direct our intentions in a powerful, heart-centered way. Zach's website is ZachBeach.com. (Exodus 20:8-10a) Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. - so beschreiben einige Autoren unseren gesellschaftlichen Zustand heute. Nicht gerade allzu vielversprechend, was?! Wo gibt es Hilfe? Wie finden wir Ruhe und Frieden inmitten einer hektischen Welt? Wie können wir ein emotional stabiles und geistlich lebendiges Leben führen? Swenson has diagnosed the problem of our day as “overload.”If you were to take an MRI of our lives, here is what you would see:“We have too many choices and decisions, too many activities and commitments, too much change creating too much stress. We have too much speed and hurry. We have too much technology, complexity, traffic, information, possessions, debt, expectations, advertisements, and media.
