Given all of the possibilities we have living in a modern society, people still struggle with feeling lost, unhappy, and unfulfilled. It's even been reported that American unhappiness hit a record low early this year. If you do a climate check with the people in your life and your social media pages, it's not hard to see that sadly behind some of the smiles, there's a feeling of unhappiness in the air. Arthur C. Brooks is the William Henry Bloomberg Professor of the Practice of Public Leadership at the Harvard Kennedy School and Professor of Management Practice at the Harvard Business School. He's discussing why he felt called to explore and research the human experience and model of what actually brings us happiness. If money, fame, power, and pleasure doesn't bring permanent happiness, then what does? How can you ensure a trajectory of life that leads to happiness and fulfillment? Jeannette talks to the marvellous Suzy Welch, a renowned professor of management at NYU School of Business and a celebrated author, to delve into the complexities of personal and professional reinvention. Suzy shares her unique journey from a creative upbringing in a family of artists to her successful career in business journalism and consulting, highlighting the pivotal moments that shaped her path. She also candidly discusses the challenges of resilience, particularly in the face of loss, and emphasises the importance of forgiveness as a crucial step towards recovery KEY TAKEAWAYS Life often involves unexpected twists and turns, and what may seem like survival in the moment can later be recognised as a process of reinvention and growth. Resilience is not about having grit when you're down; it's about forgiveness—both of yourself and others. True resilience comes from a place of strength, and it requires inner work to move past feelings of weakness and shame. Open and honest communication is crucial in both personal and professional relationships. Speaking the truth, even when it's difficult, fosters respect and can lead to stronger connections. Identifying your values, aptitudes, and interests is essential for discovering your purpose. The intersection of these elements can guide you toward a fulfilling life and help you make decisions that align with your true self. BEST MOMENTS "I think there's no straight lines in most people's lives. I grew up in a family... business was just not part of our life at all." "Resilience is something we have when we're strong. We're at the top of our game... but when you're on your back, all you feel is weak."  "It's an act of respect and love to tell the truth. Everyone always prefers the hard truth to a soft lie." "I had to learn that when you're really suffering and really weak, the only way you can get resilience in yourself is to start with a step that I think is just always left out, which is forgiveness."   This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. Welcome to an interview with Richard Ruback and Royce Yudkoff, HBS professors and the hosts of 'Think Big, Buy Small' podcast.    In this episode, we discuss current market trends related to entrepreneurship through acquisition. We also touch on the demographic trend of baby boomers retiring and needing to sell their businesses, and its impact on buying and selling businesses. Most importantly, Richard and Royce share their advice on how to find the right business to buy, the key considerations and how to evaluate businesses, common buyer errors, and the challenges of buying from baby boomers.   Think Big, Buy Small is a new podcast from Harvard Business School that explores this innovative approach to entrepreneurship: acquisition entrepreneurship. The show is an extension of their courses on small firms, including “Entrepreneurship Through Acquisition,” which has been taken by thousands of MBA students, and their highly-regarded book, HBR Guide to Buying a Small Business: Think Big, Buy Small, Own Your Own Company, which has sold more than 65,000 copies.   Richard S. Ruback is a Baker Foundation Professor and the Willard Prescott Smith Professor of Corporate Finance, Emeritus at the Harvard Business School.  Over the last 15 years, he and Royce Yudkoff have been developing and teaching a second year course titled “The Financial Management of Smaller Firms” and a field course called “Entrepreneurship Through Acquisition”.  Ruback and Yudkoff's book, HBR Guide to Buying a Small Business was published by Harvard Business Review Press in 2017. The book is a practical roadmap through the steps required to find, evaluate, negotiate, and finance the acquisition of a smaller firm.   Ruback earned his Ph.D. in business administration at the University of Rochester in 1980 and taught at MIT's Sloan School before joining the HBS faculty as a visiting professor in 1987. He was appointed associate professor in 1988 and full professor in 1989. This fear is based in reality. For instance, Google's AI advised people to add glue to pizza,Forbes careers contributor Jack Kelly noted. And Air Canada's AI chatbot made up a refund policy for a customer — and a Canadian tribunal forced the airline to issue a real refund based on its AI-invented policy, Wired reported. This inconsistent battle has significant implications for business. Of 200 to 300 generative AI experiments the typical large company is undertaking, a mere 10 to 15 have been rolled out internally, and perhaps one or two have been released to customers.  Babson College Associate Professor of Management PracticePeter S. Many of you listening to this show are at or nearing the midpoint of life. The rest of you will be there before you know it. This show is geared to blow away a myth and massive problem we live within our culture. We churn and grind away to achieve and provide...and as we age we just try to buckle down and keep it going as long as we can, or as long as we feel we have to. ⁣ ⁣ This is a message to say..."Whoa! Stop! You've totally got it wrong! You don't want to keep doing what you've been doing. Rather you want to evolve, graduate if you will, to a new and well earned second half of life. One where you move from learning and innovating and amassing, to...leveraging all you've learned. The former leads to burnout and grave dissatisfaction, the latter to the greatest joy and fulfillment life has to offer. ⁣ ⁣ My guest, researcher and expert on this topic is Arthur Brooks. Arthur went from being a professional French horn, to earning degrees online that landed him as a think tank president amongst Ivy League scholars, which you'll hear was an embarrassment to him for a while, to today being...OK, this is long...the William Henry Bloomberg Professor of the Practice of Public Leadership at the Harvard Kennedy School, and Professor of Management Practice at the Harvard Business School, where he teaches courses on leadership, happiness, and social entrepreneurship. He is also a columnist at The Atlantic, where he writes the popular weekly “How to Build a Life” column. ⁣ ⁣ Brooks is the author of 12 books, including the 2022 #1 New York Times bestseller From Strength to Strength: Finding Success, Happiness, and Deep Purpose in the Second Half of Life, which is my focus for this series. A recent Harvard Magazine article labeled Arthur as, "The Happiness Revolutionary." Somehow between his content and his personality Arthur has become a massively influential guy who is now called on and cited by people such as Oprah, the Dalai Lama and The White House. ⁣ You're about to hear him school us in how our first half of life is spent leveraging fluid knowledge, and that our brain is created for this. But around the midpoint of our life, our brain has less ability for fluid knowledge and transitions to great ability in crystallized knowledge. If you are aware of and embrace this, you will find great peace and continue progress instead of feeling you are in a race for time to keep up the initiatives and pace from the first half of life.⁣ ⁣ June 15-16 of 2023 I'll be in Dallas to attend and speak at the Ziglar coach summit.
