Where has all the color and ornamentation gone??? Why has minimalism become so pervasive over the last century in America? Once, ornamentation and vivid color were celebrated hallmarks of art, architecture, and design—think Baroque paintings, intricate textiles, and the opulence of Art Nouveau. But with the rise of minimalism in the early 20th century, a dramatic change took hold. Clean lines, muted palettes, and functional simplicity replaced the flourish and decorative excess of previous eras. In this episode, we explore how and why ornamentation fell out of favor, and what that tells us about changing tastes, cultural values, and the evolving purpose of art itself. To watch the YOUTUBE VIDEO of this episode and the irreverent & somewhat unpredictable AFTERSHOW, subscribe to our Patreon: http://patreon.com/user?u=91688467

This week, we welcome back legendary interior designer Bunny Williams. In preparation of her new book Life in the Garden to release in March 2024, Bunny generously shares some great tips on planning successful gardens from starting small to considering ongoing maintenance. Bunny also offers advice for novice gardeners, including prioritizing manageable tasks, plant care, pot selection, and using garden structures to enhance outdoor spaces. Get ready to be inspired to spend some time outdoors! What You'll Hear On This Episode: What inspired Bunny to make Life in the Garden. How a plan in your garden can help you stay organized and on track. Bunny shares memories of growing up in Virginia and how it shaped her approach to hospitality and entertaining. Great advice for novice gardeners. All about plant care and keeping your garden healthy and beautiful. How to find the right pot for your plant. Ornamentation and structure is such a huge part of your garden. What Bunny's planting season looks like. The logistics of garden photography. Where Bunny sources her plants and garden materials. Mentioned: Ballard Designs Website IG Life in the Garden Decorating Dilemma: Follow along with this week's decorating dilemma here. Hi Wendy! First off, you have a beautiful house. Bunny suggests adding a large wool or area rug to define the space and make it extra cozy. Arranging a pair of comfortable wingback chairs on either side of the fireplace with an ottoman or bench between them for extra seating will draw attention to the fireplace rather than block the view. You could also consider small sofas or built-in banquettes along the walls for additional seating options Placing furniture in this space will help utilize it beyond just a pass-through, connecting it more to the living room area. A rug, chairs and ottoman/bench would make it a lovely sitting space to enjoy the fireplace from. Installing flush mount light fixtures rather than fluorescent lights can provide softer, more attractive lighting in areas like the kitchen and back hallway. Finally, moving the dining room table to the center of the space rather than against the window seat can improve the low and use of the dining area.

The ancient Greeks and Romans were entranced by the seemingly miraculous powers of some of nature's most wondrous objects. In this episode, we explore one Such object in particular: ornaments! Ben Askren joins Lexman to discuss his experience as a thaumaturge and his work with brookite, a delicate mineral found only in select parts of the world. Plus, we dive into Zoroastrianism and its veneration of the syenites, a valuable kind of rock that many believe has powerful therapeutic properties.
Pieter Abbeel is a synonymist who believes that ornamental words have the ability to transport readers into another world. He talks about chamomile, his favorite flower, and how it has inspired him to write about the banal in an evocative way.
Notes: There's a freedom in not waiting for a cure. Traditional music is a way to connect to your spiritual ancestral community; it can affirm your experience and there's the "big expansion of empathy that is happening when we sing." In this podcast, Artistic Director Erin Helyard delves into the vibrant world of baroque ornamentation. Singers both then and now are expected to ornament their music in an exciting way that shows off their technique and expression. We look at treatises, unearth some recently discovered ornamentation in Handel's hand, and lift a lid on the ornamental art of the great baroque singers.

From ornamenting your pastries to adding embellishment to your table, Michael Davenport believed that for all the time we take preparing our food, it should be presented proudly. An elaborately, or even just a neatly set table can get the salivary glands going. Michael was a firm proponent of cloth napkins, candlelight, and a centerpiece - even if it’s just a bowl of lemons. Despite being a skeptic of many kitchen gadgets, when it comes to decorating food itself, Michael sings the praises of pastry tubes. They’re not only for wedding cakes; they don't have to be limited to cakes at all for that matter. Try using a pastry tube when dealing with butter, mashed potatoes or making deviled eggs. Finally, Michael shares a treat made in the kitchen and then broken over someone’s head - hear him out, he’s talking about cascarones. Cascarones are most commonly a part of Mexican fiestas. This festive activity requires hollowing out eggshells, filling them with confetti, and adding a layer of paint. Next time you’re celebrating or simply left with extra eggshells after making a meringue, consider cascarones. Law & Business - the podcast about legal issues and how they affect your business.
Law & Business Podcast with Wil Jacques On the new episode of the Law and Business podcast, Wil and Anthony talk about when clients have an idea. Episode 31 starts with the first words many clients and potential clients have: “I Have an Idea”. What is next in the intellectual property development process? What are the first questions that a potential client is asked in a consultation? Law & Business Podcast with Wil Jacques -What is your business plan? -Is this a product or is this an idea that deserves patent protection? -Patent: What makes this idea or product useful? -Utility: How do we know that a product is new? -We need to do a search. Patents. Patent applications. Journals. Pictures. Videos. Can this invention be found in action? -Looking at keywords, concepts, elements of the idea or product. -Are there differences between what is found and what is disclosed by the client? -Looking for suggestions in the prior art that is relevant to see if any prior disclosures teach the invention that the client has developed. -Looking for material that is new, useful, and not disclosed. -Design patents: Ornamentation may be different. The design has to be different, even if the utility is the same as another product. -Copyright law: Can a product fall under copyright law (for example, a three-dimensional work of art)? This protection is of what is not useful in a product. For example, a lamp that has a statue. So the light bulb is on top of the statue. So there is a portion of the product that is a work of authorship; it is a work of art and would fall under copyright law. But there is also a useful part of the product (the lamp) which does not fall under copyright law. -Trademark law: Branding and selling a product. Think of a box of Pepperidge Farm cookies. In these mixed boxes of cookies, the company name is a trademark – Pepperidge Farm cookies. However, all of the brands of the cookies are trademarks, also. Be it Milano, Chesapeake, Chessmen, etc. Customers are able to create the relationship of the brand to the product. Trademarks can include color, sounds, shapes. -Trade dress law: How the packaging of a product matters and creates that relationship to consumers. Wil and Anthony talk specific examples of intellectual property development and enforcement. Here is a lightly-edited transcript of the episode: Anthony Verna: All right, everyone. Welcome to the Law & Business Podcast where we continue with our quest to talk more about intellectual property. It is a journey. I have to say that when I litigate, I know a lot of litigants are looking for that instant response and it's not an instant response. It's a long journey. When people file a trademark, they want that instant response, but it's not an instant response. It's a six month journey. When we file a patent, it's not an instant response. Wil Jacques: I have to agree with you, Anthony. It's certainly not in the first question that comes out of my inventors’ mouths or can I get a patent? Well, we'll have to see. Anthony: This is Anthony Verna. I'm here with Wil Jacques, patent agent for Verna law. And we're talking about ideas today. What happens when somebody calls our office and says, “I have an idea”? Wil: This is the foundation, this is where it begins. Anthony: When a client tells me or potential client tells me, “I have an idea”, I ask what the idea is, I then ask, what's Your Business Plan? Because ultimately after everything we're going to talk about, I want a client to be able to say, yes, I want to make money on this and I want to sell it and it's going to be sold to people A of X ages Y incomes, and they're going to have a need for this product because enter your reason here. Wil: Agreed. Anthony: If I don't hear that, I'm going to try to do some little coaching and counseling so I can get some answers like that. Just to kind of plant ideas in the head.

This question was sent by Andrew, and he writes: “Dear Vidas, thank you for your email particularly since you must be very busy judging by all your posts! In reply to your question, I'm currently working on the Franck Final, and hoping to move on to Stanford's “Rheims” from the second organ sonata, hopefully in time for Armistice Day 2018.. I visited Rheims last year. What do I struggle with? Early fingering and ornamentation, particularly making Early English music sound coherent and fluid. Andrew” http://www.organduo.lt

This lovely song was written especially for World Voice by Aavaas, one of Nepal’s leading children’s songwriters. The lyrics tell the story of the two birds very clearly. With younger children it would be fun to add some movement and act out the story. Practise singing pentatonic scales from F and also play them on tuned percussion. Try to add an accompaniment on tuned percussion using the notes of the scale. Although the video performance track is in F, it’s very easy to transpose it into other keys and it would be good for the children to try and play pentatonic scales from other notes. The charming singing on the performance track does not follow the notated score precisely. It is normal practice in Nepal to ornament the melody. To begin with it would be best to follow the score and the melody track closely. Ornamentation can come later…….! Artist Sanaz Mazinani explores intention of traditional of Islamic ornamentation in the short clip.
This question comes up more than any other from people who are new to sales and building their own business. Your ability to master this skill depends largely on your personality and what type business you are in. For example, if your business or product offering is online based with little or no face to face communication, your first impression will be dictated by your marketing and quality of your website. However, if your business demands face-to-face meetings, there are some important steps you need to consider to properly break the ice and make a great first impression. It takes just a quick glance for someone to begin making decisions about you. Research says we make eleven major decisions about someone in the first seven seconds of meeting. In fact, studies have found that nonverbal cues have four times the impact on the impression you make than anything you say. So it's worth giving every encounter your best shot. In order to develop this skill successfully, there are three areas you need to consider: your appearance, personality and attitude. In this session we will discuss appearance. Present yourself appropriately. This does not mean you need to be dressed in a thousand dollar suit. Nor do you want to show up in shorts and a tank top when the venue demands business casual. You just need to make sure you're dressed appropriately for the event. I like to dress equal or slightly better than the best-dressed person in the room. Especially the person I will be meeting for the first time. Clean and Neat. Being well groomed and wearing nicely pressed clothes are important to a great first impression. Appropriate dress and grooming will make you feel better and more confident. A nice haircut and shined shoes will make you feel better and more confident. Take the time to check yourself in a mirror before you arrive at your meeting. Ornamentation. Depending on who you are meeting and why, be conscious of your jewelry, watches and accessories. Make sure you are making the impression you want to make for this occasion. Avoid gaudy or flamboyant when meeting new people. This may not line up with your personality but a conservative approach will help you relate to more people. Save those items for a party. Be conscious of how you smell. Bathe prior to a meeting and use deodorant. Do not use perfumes and colognes. Some people are sensitive to strong smells and you do not want them to be distracted from your conversation. Make sure your breath smells fresh. Bring mints or gum to avoid turning the other person off. These things may seem simple and common sense but they could make all the difference in you making a great first impression on someone. Will you let these things stop you? I hope not. In Part two of this session we will discuss Body Language. Have a great week! Pierce

Here is the recording of the November 2, 2011 webinar entitled “Common Trademark Application Problems.” In this webinar we discuss the trademark application process, along with the types of potential refusals with examples. Discussed are issues of: – Ownership – Ornamentation – Use in Commerce – Consent of a living individual – Likelihood of Confusion...
Ornamentation has been a staple of vocal music for hundreds if not thousands of years. Join composer and writer Brian Rosen and VoiceBox host Chloe Veltman for a discussion about the ways in which singers (and composers) adorn melodies – and the factors that separate memorable from forgettable embellishments. James Howard Kunstler thinks that most modern buildings are not really architecture, they're just manufactured boxes. Whether it's suburban houses, or retail stores, the buildings of our everyday environment send the message that we don't care about ourselves or our surroundings. Kunstler tackles cartoon eateries, reflective glass office buildings, and otherwise good new urban buildings that lack proper ornamentation. We hear from a listener caller in Pittsburgh at the end of the show.
