Host Jon Powers welcomes his longtime industry colleague Paul Curran, CEO of BQ Energy, to the show. BQ Energy is brownfield and landfill developer. They've developed hundreds of megawatts of wind and solar. CleanCapital acquired BQ Energy in June 2022 to scale up what they were already doing. Hear about how turning brownfields to brightfields is a unique space, so you have to know what you're doing, but the potential to solve the climate crisis and utilize the under-utilized or impossible land that are brownfields and landfills could be a critical piece of that solution.

This month, my co-host Henry and I were joined by my friends from Probably Oslo, Danny & Alex, to talk about the debut self-titled 'For Those I Love' album. David Balfe is a Dublin-based musician and artist. This is his first and debut album as For Those I Love (@forthoseilove), but he's been a part of a few other projects; including the collective Burnt Out, one of at least three musical projects that he formed with his best friend Paul Curran. The mention of Paul is vital to the discussion of the album since it was his passing in Feb 2018 that triggered David to make this album in the first place. He recorded over 75 songs for the album before whittling it down to the nine we have here. This is another one of my favorite albums of 2021 so far and I was really excited to discuss it with some great people, so I hope you enjoy and give it a listen as well. Quantum Quote: “The good you do today, may be forgotten soon, but do good anyway. Give the world the best you have, and it'll never be enough. But give your best anyway. Life is never easy. ” – Mother Theresa   Do you have old landfills in your town and think how ugly they are and want to have something useful instead?   Are you interested in using solar and wind energy to help save the environment - and save money at the same time?   There are over 50,000 landfills in the United States, and there's a big need for solar and wind energy. Converting landfills into renewable energy power centers is a great match.   Paul Curran and BQ Energy convert brownfields and landfills into solar and wind energy power centers. Paul explains that those properties should not be used for parks or for people's homes.   Paul got interested in clean energy in the late 1970's when he heard the president of the United States say that getting energy independence in the country was the moral equivalent of war. Sadly, neither the technology nor the politics were ready. But 20 years after that, the world said we needed clean energy, the technology had advanced, the policies were ready, and the economics made it possible.   In this episode, Paul talks about why BQ only works on brownfield and landfills. He also shares how he was doing Steel Winds years ago, and how the project changed the logo of the City of Lackawanna.    SuperNova #1. “So we took a timeout, and about 20 years after that, things started to catch up to where now, this is not only the right thing to do, it's a very easy thing to do. It's the right thing to do from a societal and an economic point of view..” – Paul Curran   SuperNova #2. “Lackawanna is a great story of how you can transform a brownfield into a wind and solar power plant in what was a steel company town. When you do the right things, great things happen for everybody. There were no losers on that project.”    SuperNova #3. “It's an awesome responsibility, frankly, on people like us to be put in a position to impact people's lives for generations. Turning a landfill into a clean energy center fulfills a need to turn around a bad situation.. That type of return is not dollars and cents - it's measured in how well we do the job.”    Worst Clean Energy Moment: “Most of my down moments have to do with how am I going to pay the bills? How are we going to keep this thing going. And most of them relate to government tax and utility structures that vary from state to state and change over time.”   Aha Moment: When a management trainee's research said that putting a wind farm on an oil refinery was a bad idea.   Best Advice He's Ever Received: Keep your head head straight, keep your eye on the prize and do what you should be doing.   Most Energized about Today: That the use of solar energy is very much common and normal now.   Personal Habits that Contribute to Success: Understanding people - figuring out what they like doing and what they are great at doing.   Internet Resource: For data about energy statistics - BQEnergy.com   Book Recommendation: “The Century Trilogy”  by Ken Follett.    Magic Wand: “Take away the subsidies from the coal mine operations, take away the subsidies from the nuclear industry, take away the subsidies from the oil industry, natural gas depletion allowances, and all this kind of stuff - and take it away from solar and wind. Then we'd see the real economics and solar and wind would grow even faster”.   WTF or F:  Lake Erie was frozen on May 7 of 1963. It will never be frozen in May again. The climate has changed.   Parting Advice: “We're doing the right things here. The world has caught up with it, which is a scary thing to think. But I think it is the right path to be going on. I think that's being proven more and more every day.”   Connect: www.bqenergy.com

When Black Athletes drummer Rob Haight took him to see Black Flag at The Farm in 1984, Chuck knew he had found a home in the punk scene. In 1986 he started Poultry Magic with Benicia High pals Paul Curran, Cliff Helmholtz and Skot Pelkey, and lived the East Bay punk dream of playing Gilman for the first time in 1987. Through the 1980s and 1990s he went on to start or join a number of bands (including early Lookout band Monsula), worked security, live sound and the store at Gilman, and finally finished college after 7 years.    He moved to Indiana to get a PhD in literature and philosophy, and since 2001 he's been an English professor at Utah Valley University, teaching courses in critical theory, cultural studies, US literature and LGBTQ literature and culture. His scholarly writing focuses on connecting experimental art with radical politics in Asian American and LGBTQ literature and culture, and on teaching research writing to beginning college students. He occasionally writes about punk history and culture for academic audiences, including a 2020 article about Gilman's early years, which Paul Curran called "Maybe the only academic thing about punk that I've ever been able to get on board with."     Along the way he continued to play music, somehow ending up in the right places at the right times: in Indiana for the midwest emo explosion of the mid-late 90s, then in Salt Lake City for its post-hardcore breakout in the early 2000s. He started American Maw with Kevin McCracken in 2017 and they played their first shows in late 2019-early 2020, just in time for a Covid hiatus.   --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/adultingwell/support

On today's episode, Maximum Rocknoll – the story behind the famed punk institution.   Beginning in 1977, a group of Bay Area music fans led by Tim Yohannan,  began a weekly radio show out of the studio at KPFA in Berkeley, California. The driving impulse behind the show was simple – an unabashed uncompromising world of punk rock.  By 1982, the punk scene had grown into a worldwide movement and the founders of the show launched Maximum RocknRoll as a print fanzine, dedicated to anti-corporate ideals, leftist politics and relentless enthusiasm for DIY punk and hardcore bands from every inhabited continent of the globe.  Over the next several decades, what started as a do it yourself labor of love amongst a handful of friends had extended to include literally thousands of volunteers and hundreds of thousands of readers. For many, it became the punk rock bible. The inky smudge of the black and white newsprint providing a voice in community for young teenagers around the world, introducing them to bands and a sense of creative expression they had not known before.  By 2019, the landscape of the punk underground as well as print media itself had dramatically shifted and MRR announced the end to its print publication. Over these 42 years with over 1600 radio shows and 400 issues of fanzine to its claim, MRR came to represent a certain do-it-yourself ethos that extended far beyond the music itself. As the print scene came to an end last year, I invited some well the longstanding Maximum contributors to come together for a night to talk about that the zine and its lasting impact on the global punk scene. Here's our conversation..  The Past, Present & Future of Maximum Rocknroll: The Story Behind the Famed Punk Institution Brandi Howell (BH): Tonight we have with us Martin Sprouse, Paul Curran, and Matt Badenhop.   And before I introduce them, I just wanted to play a little taste of the early days of the radio show.   BH:  So if you guys wanted to introduce yourselves a bit and kind of give your background and how you were first introduced to the magazine.  Martin Sprouse (MS):  Yeah. My name is Martin Sprouse. I grew up in Southern California. So my first introduction to the magazine was the first compilation.  Me and my friend, Jason Traeger, and Pat Weakland.   We were doing our own fanzine in San Diego called The Leading Edge. And we found that record, Pat knew it was coming out and we found like the day they were unboxing it in a record store and we just go – Oh wow!  Cause it was the first time we knew there were hardcore bands playing up here, you know, that they existed up here.  Because in Southern California, we're spoiled with them, but it was nice to see all these kids doing things.  And then from that our local record store started carrying Maximum Rocknroll from the first issue on. And when we first looked at it, it was like so different than what we're used to. You know, we're used to Flip Side and Ripper, but Maximum to our teenage eyes was this thick. It had politics right on the cover and I was going – Holy shit, this is great!  You know, it was newsprint, it was messy, just like it is now, you know, but it just looks so different, you know, and then we just kept buying issues. And we started coming up here and visiting in '84, '83 ... staying at the Maximum house. And then I moved up here in '85 to become part of Maximum. Is that enough background?   And I stopped doing Leading Edge and started working on Maximum and been involved with Maximum projects since then.  Leading Edge fanzine. artwork by Jason Traeger BH:  And Paul has also been with the magazine and various bands since 1983, contributing to all the graphics and the record reviews, he lists himself has a house cleaner. And now as a member of the powerful and mysterious MMR board.  Paul, how did you first learn about Maximum? Paul Curran (PC):  I first learned about Maximum probably by seeing the magazine. He also hosts a great, insiders' opera podcast called “Hook, Push, & Pray.” On September 17, Nick sat down with LA Opera's Sebastian Paul and Marybell Musco President and CEO Christopher Koelsch, Senior Director for Artistic Programs Joshua Winograde, and renowned director Paul Curran, head of dramatic instruction for LA Opera's young artists, in a wide and sometime wild conversation that includes some adult language. Thanks to Nick for letting us share the conversation and his podcast with you. If you would like to hear more of “Hook, Push & Pray,” visit his website: https://www.hookpushpray.com.

Oslooperans förre chef Paul Curran är från skotsk arbetarklass, feminist och öppen bög. Och möt Jenny Hval, författare och kompositör, och numera avlidna Nina Krohn från norska radions musikredaktion. Birgitta Tollan gör självsvåldiga nedslag i musiklivet i sex städer: Reykjavik, New York, Oslo, Helsingfors, Berlin och Köpenhamn. Spellista: Untitled In CoF Minor A Valentine To Sherwood Anderson Mikhail/Gertrude Stein Mikhail. With unique access to Craig and the team working with him in Forest Bank, Producer Sue Mitchell records for six months before the October release date. Drug worker Paul Curran helps Craig navigate some of the issues behind his heroin and cocaine use and equips him with new ways of coping with the pressures he might face when he's free. He is now 36 and has been in and out of custody for most of his life, starting with an eight year sentence when he was just seventeen. Forest Bank, on the outskirts of Manchester, prides itself on the close links between the drug unit in the prison and the community team ready to take over on release. Craig's partner has had enough of raising three children on her own and wants him to finally get settled: some of the work involves family meetings as the couple discuss what life might be like. Another strong element rests with two former prisoners, themselves ex-addicts, who now work mentoring Craig and others as they detox on the wing and embark on therapy and group work. The recordings reveal the struggle Craig faced following the murder of his older brother and how drugs became his way of coping with the pain. On his last release he was doing well until he lost his job and after that things quickly deteriorated. This time round he feels better able to cope with knock-backs and is working on his temper, his expectations and how his hopes for a normal life can be realised. As his release date draws near listeners are taken into his cell as he packs and waits: will this be the time he finally manages to start his life in earnest.

But what happens once you get to that big city? What can you create once you're free to create the life you've always wanted? My guest this week is Paul Curran, who hitchhiked from Glasgow to London in search of something better at the age of sixteen. There he trained as a ballet dancer until an injury ended his career on stage, and launched a whole new career as a director.
