Episode 210 is upon us, and before we talk about the match against the Quakes, we have an announcement! Defenders of the Banc is proud to announce the podcast's first official sponsor: FLEX Power Tools. Yes, FLEX, the very same front-of-kit sponsor of our beloved Black and Gold! A huge thank you to everyone in the FLEX family: Joe, Katie, Brady, Vince, Taylor, Shane, and everyone involved in making this dream a reality.Meanwhile in San Jose, the Black and Gold take an… interesting lineup into PayPal Park to take on the Quakes. While Max and the back line were relatively normal, the midfield trio of Mendez-Acosta-Blessing and seeing Ryan Hollingshead's name next to Chicho and Mahala on the front line left both Filly and Scarf saying “Wait… what?!” (It's back!)LAFC would go down early on a Benji Kikanovic goal, set up by the theme for the match, an attack from the right by San Jose. After a couple of near misses by Jeremy Ebobisse and Chicho Arango, we head to half down, but not out, 1-0. Surprisingly, no halftime changes were made, but that wouldn't stop LAFC from leveling the match. After some much-needed heroics by Crepeau, it was time for more Mahala magic! A cheeky chip of Marcinkowski in the 54' was all LAFC needed to grab a point back on the road. Or at least we thought. After subbing in Carlos Vela, Jose Cifuentes, Ilie Sanchez, and Gareth Bale, the momentum immediately swung our way, but double yellows on Ilie and Kellyn, coupled with the wunderkind, Cade Cowell, entering the match, spelled trouble for the Black and Gold. In the 77', Cade Cowell fired a one-timer with authority to put the home side on top for good and send PayPal Park into a frenzy. San Jose had just won their MLS Cup. Ilie Sanchez all but sealed the victory for SJ, picking up his second yellow in just 15 minutes, assuring he will miss the match in Austin, but a game LAFC squad wouldn't relent. The front line of Bale, Chicho, and Vela were clicking as LAFC had a few chances to pull one back, but it was too little, too late, and just like that, the win streak was over. This episode definitely meanders through the first few bits! Will Cifu, Mamadou Fall, and/or Brian Rodriguez be on their way out? Are more players coming in? Why is Filly calling out Tony Robbins (again)? Did we really just talk about the return of Shaft Brewer, Jr. to American soccer? And did the boys really get to bring back “Name That Perez”?! What an episode!

ch. 1: In a Canadian television exclusive, The New Reality gets behind-the-scenes access to Opener – an innovative aviation and aerospace company developing a flying car. What sets this company apart is not only the technology and engineering but how fundamentally Canadian it is. For example, the CEO is Canadian, the Director of Operations, Test and Propulsion is Canadian and even the lead pilot is Canadian. The company, which is based in Palo Alto, California, is opening their doors to TNR and showing us how it flies. Guest: Krysia Collyer, Producer of the New Reality ch. 2: What is it about POP that we love so much? We know it's unhealthy, we know there is way too much sugar, and we know it can be addictive, but why do so many people still choose that as their drink of choice. We all know that one person who always seems to be sipping on a bottle of coke, pepsi, sprite, etc. Guest: Ashley Gearhardt, Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Michigan and the Food and Addiction Science & Treatment Lab ch. 3: British Columbia's hospitality sector is expressing cautious optimism in the wake of Tuesday's announcement that capacity limits for indoor events will be lifted next week for large parts of the province. But while the move is good news to the struggling sector, many operators say they still have questions about how things will play out. Guest: Ingrid Jarrett, President, and CEO of BC Hotel Association ch. 4: Vancouver Whitecaps FC have won their first two of five matches over 17 days and are set to take on San Jose Earthquakes this Saturday, October 23 at PayPal Park in San Jose, California. Wednesday's historic come-from-behind 3-2 win over Cascadia rivals Portland Timbers has vaulted the 'Caps into a playoff spot and seventh place in the Western Conference with 43 points. The 'Caps are one point behind sixth place Minnesota United FC, two points behind fifth place Los Angeles Galaxy and three points behind fourth place Portland. Guest: Vanni Sartini, Acting head coach of the Vancouver Whitecaps ch. 5: All week long the NDP government has been facing criticism over proposed changes to the Freedom of Information Laws in this province. We've heard the phrase “a modest fee” more times than I care to count. But is $25 to even FILE request a modest fee? When only one province - Alberta - does the same? The rest charge either $5 or no fee at all. Guest: Lisa Beare, BC Minister of Citizens' Services ch. 6: As the overdose crisis continues in BC, one BC MLA is sharing his story of addiction. BC Green MLA Adam Olsen, battled a cocaine addiction when he was in his 20's, and now he wants to open up about his journey. Guest: Adam Olsen, BC Green MLA for Saanich North and the Islands ch. 7: British Columbia's forests minister has introduced a bill to amend the Forest and Range Practices Act in what she says will “reshape” forest management in the province. Katrine Conroy told the legislature the proposed changes align forestry legislation with the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act passed in late 2019 and introduce “new tools to establish resilient forests.” She says the changes would include improved processes for reforestation after wildfires and more collaborative planning between Indigenous nations, government, the forest industry and other stakeholders. LAFC headed up to the usually-friendly confines of PayPal Park for a lovely Saturday evening in San Jose, and, unfortunately, for the Black and Gold, it was a house of horrors. LAFC loses to the Smurfs, 2-0, and the playoff chase for LAFC becomes a little harder. But yay, Filly's back from Orlando!Right out of the gate, a disaster of a header pass from Mamadou Fall leads to Chofis finding a streaking Benji Kikanovic for an early 1-0 San Jose lead. After a completely uninspiring first half, LAFC came out looking to avoid the kind of mistakes they started the first half and… did exactly the same thing. Two LAFC players chose to pass in their own box rather than clear the lines or just head the damn ball out of bounds, which, of course, leads to the second goal of the match for San Jose, this one off the foot of Chofis. Despite a line change in the 58' which led to more energy, better pace, and a few more scoring chances, LAFC couldn't find one. The Black and Gold leave San Jose losers of two straight, this one at the hands of the Earthquakes, 2-0. Also on this episode, we celebrate clinching the Supporters Shield on TDILH, we check in on Diego Rossi in Turkey, and we welcome Michee Ngalina to the Black and Gold! Filly is exhausted, Scarf's voice is shot, and, most importantly, Filimonster Studios is getting a new address! Check out Episode 169 of Defenders of the Banc for all your Black and Gold needs!
In LAFC's early days, San Jose was a home away from home. Goals came easy for the Black and Gold, stacks of 3 points were regularly on the menu, and the mighty 3252 took over the stadium like nowhere else LAFC journeys. Well, after today, at least we still have the 3252! LAFC falls in frustrating fashion to San Jose 2-1. The day started out with such promise, as LAFC fans would see the debut of Chicho Arango. Arango looked good early on, but a pair of mistakes by Jesus Murillo would doom LAFC. First, a free kick that was almost an Olympico by Cristian Espinoza finds Nathan, and LAFC is down before the 10-minute mark. Later in the half, Espinoza again is the talisman, finding Chofis as he streaks down the middle, and just like that, LAFC is down a pair before the half-hour bell was heard.LAFC would pull one back before the end of the half on a set piece, as Carlos Vela found Jackson Yueill, who played for LAFC tonight, with a beautiful header. Honestly, after about the hour mark, there really wasn't much of a silver lining for the club, and there's no easy way to say this… right now we are middling. We simply aren't that good. Also on this episode, Carlos Vela signs with LAFC on This Day In LAFC History, Three Ümlaüts becomes the first to cross the streams, and Dio signs with a club in Qatar. Filly and Scarf are more than ready to recap a match where we score more than 2 goals, but until then, enjoy Episode 160 of Defenders of the Banc!
Los Angeles Football Club dropped points again at home in a 4 - 1 embarrassment against now Western Conference leaders Sporting Kansas City. The starting lineup had to see some big changes at the back with Eddie Segura out for the season, after having a procedure to repair his ACL and Jesus Murillo being sat with a minor injury to his hamstring with no return date in site. SKC came out with a plan to give the black and gold a taste of their own medicine. They pressed the black and gold back line and were successful in disrupting buildup play in the LAFC defensive half. A few times, SKC was able to quickly transition from their high press to their counterattack with a numerical advantage. LAFC gave up three goals in the first half. All of them came from turnovers in possession, two of which SKC went the length of the field to score. The second half saw LAFC take their effort to another level, but it saw more goal scoring chances go unconverted. After LAFC gave up a 4th goal to the visitors, Danny Musovski got a cancellation goal to avoid the shutout. This was a deflating loss for the Black and Gold faithful as it is the third game in a row when LAFC didn't take 3pts at the final whistle. LAFC will look to turn things around away this Sunday with a 4pm kickoff at PayPal Park against the San Jose Earthquakes. This gives them an opportunity to expel this bad taste in their mouth from their home loss. The 3 keys to the match are clear and obvious: 1). no mistakes in possession in the defensive half that lead to counterattacking situations for the opponent, 2). finish the clear cut goal scoring opportunities inside the 18, and 3). when adversity hits during the game, an immediate response of effort, energy and intelligence is mandatory. The pressure is mounting on Bob Bradley to right the ship. If three points is not taken this weekend, the black and gold could drop out of a playoff spot. This game is important to get the second half of the MLS regular season started on the front foot. In this fourteenth episode of the 2021 season, writers-at-Large Alex Dwyer (from Yokohama, Japan), alongside in-house tactician Pierce Maher, and guest appearances from Ben Bjelajac aka Benny Blanco and Sam Ko aka Slim from our sister podcast the FCFC pod breakdown LAFC's worst loss in recent memory at home to Sporting Kansas City.
Bill and Dom talk about the 1-3 loss against LA Galaxy played at PayPal Park and the big news of Jesse Fioranelli "parting ways" with the San Jose Earthquakes.
The San Jose Earthquakes had one of their better performances in the Matias Almeyda era beating FC Dallas 3-1 in the first match at PayPal Park in over a year. 17-year-old Cade Cowell was a one man wrecking crew scoring a goal and dishing up one of the cleanest assists you will ever see. Next up for San Jose is a D.C. United team that got its first victory last week in sloppy fashion.
