Foresters are pretty good at stand-level silviculture. But what if we want to make changes to forest vegetation at a much larger scale? Silviculture at scale to impact landscape-level change is much trickier, whether that's aiming for a target age-class distribution or meeting the broad habitat needs of birds. Where do we even begin?  In walks the concept of Dynamic Forest Restoration Blocks, or the strategy of breaking up the landscape into manageable and biologically meaningful units where we can focus on specific forest management objectives. Join us on this episode as we talk with pioneers of this concept, Jeff Larkin, professor in the Department of Biology at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Forest Bird Advisor with the American Bird Conservancy, and Dan Heggenstaller, North Central Regional Forester with the Pennsylvania Game Commission.Send us a text To earn CEU/CFE credits, learn more, or interact with SilviCast, visit the uwsp.edu/SilviCast.

In this feature episode of The Sportsmen's Voice, Fred sits down with Steve Smith, Executive Director of Pennsylvania Game Commission, to discuss Sunday hunting in Pennsylvania and the years-long and ongoing push to pass landmark legislation to remove the remaining restrictions. Then, Fred is joined by CSF Vice President of Policy Brent Miller to dive deeper into the the complexities surrounding Sunday hunting legislation across the United States as a whole (a subject Brent actually wrote his thesis on!). They explore the historical context and theories of Sunday hunting bans (hint, it's not what people think), the incremental approach to changing these laws, and the various arguments for and against Sunday hunting, including safety concerns, discrimination against hunters, the opposition from professional guides and landowners, the importance of youth hunting opportunities and the bipartisan efforts to advance hunting rights.  Key Takeaways: Historical Context Is Everything: Discrimination against hunters is evident in Sunday hunting laws. Diving into the history of these bans can reveal the potentially classist, and possibly even racist roots of Sunday hunting bans, while safety concerns regarding hunting on Sundays are largely unfounded. Longstanding Priority In The Keystone State: The push for Sunday hunting has been a long-standing priority for the Pennsylvania Game Commission. Legislative momentum is building, with a majority of hunters now supporting Sunday hunting. Stakeholder Updates: The Farm Bureau's support for Sunday hunting marks a significant shift in stakeholder perspectives, along with the support of hunters themselves  Get the FREE Sportsmen's Voice e-publication in your inbox every Monday: www.congressionalsportsmen.org/newsletter   Sign up for FREE legislative tracking through CSF's Tracking the Capitols tool: www.congressionalsportsmen.org/tracking-the-capitols/ Learn more about your ad choices. A new report says emissions from plants that are part of this traditional steelmaking have serious consequences for public health. A new exhibit looks at the environmental implications of our fashion choices. Also, there's been a sharp decline in several Pennsylvania bat species from white-nose syndrome. A new federal conservation plan aims to keep development projects from making things worse. ClearWater Conservancy recently received two grants to help pay for its new Community Conservation Center, which will serve as a hub for land conservation and watershed protection in central Pennsylvania. In this week's episode, Jason talks with Thomas Keller of the Pennsylvania Game Commission. Tom is a Furbearer Biologist for the PGC and joins us to discuss the proposal to reintroduce the American Marten to Pennsylvania. During the discussion, Tom details how wildlife has historically been lost in Pennsylvania, how certain species are selected to be reintroduced, and how a feasibility study helps determine eligible species. In regards to the American Marten, Tom provides details on how the reintroduction proposal will work, why the PGC feels this reintroduction will be a success, and the impact American Martens will have on other wildlife. An in-depth discussion takes place on the diet of the American Marten, dispelling some common misinformation being spread on social media, and how the proposal will move forward-including how the public can get involved and learn more. On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, we are discussing small game with Emily Boyd. Emily is the small mammal biologist for the Pennsylvania Game Commission and she drops a wealth of knowledge on us! We discuss some of the less common small game species discussed in the Keystone State including snowshoe hares, Appalachian cottontail rabbits, and eastern fox squirrels. Most of these species provide liberal hunting opportunities, however, snowshoe hares only have a 1 week season between Christmas and New Years. Emily shares with us some of the habitat types you may find snowshoe hares if embarking on this adventure! In addition to general biology, we discuss one of the greatest threats to rabbits in North America; rabbit hemorrhagic disease. This disease has already been found in domestic rabbits, but is quickly spreading into wild populations. The concern is not "if" but "when" will it happen? There is a high mortality rate with those that contract it, and drastic management changes may occur to combat this issue. Find out what you can do as a conservationist to help address the problem! If you're like me and you tuned into social media during the 12 days of the gun season, you probably saw a variety of post, ranging from hunters either giving praise while sitting behind a big buck. Or hunters giving criticism to the Saturday opener and not seeing a deer on public land.Either way, Executive Director Bryan Burhans is fine with it. He likes to hear the praise and criticism. As he puts it- "it's how he gains perspective". Bryan, myself and my co-host Rob sat down and went over everything. The Saturday vs Monday opener. Hunter numbers. Access. Access in relation to hunter numbers. R3 ( retain, recruit, reactivate). Public land/hunting. You name it, I think we covered it.  It's a doosie! Be sure to check out our new up and coming YouTube channel as well. ( Ryan Furrer Podcast)Again. leave me a comment.
