Dale & Scott are back after their Summer hiatus, joined in the Las Vegas studio by longtime Swish Edition listeners Melissia & Jeremy who are in town from Florida. This week we're all talking about people behaving badly on airports and airplanes; legally becoming a member of the Mile High Club high above Vegas; how sharing all-you-can-eat food at Applebee's can get you arrested; apparently 1 in 10 mothers regret the name they gave their baby (Elon Musk's baby momma's gotta be on that list); Sin City's shuttered Tropicana hotel and casino gets a demolition date; a Bellagio Fountain super fan pays big time to create his own choreographed show to a U2 song—marking the hotel's 40th show; "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" sets records, sorta; and, much more pop culture silliness for September 11, 2024. The Judicial Conference of the United States has a new rule that if a case seeks a national injunction to reverse or block a federal government policy, the judge has to be randomly assigned within the district court where the case was filed. McConnell calls the rule an unforced error by the Judicial Conference that will do Washington Democrats' bidding. He want's them to reconsider.Trump's judge slaps him down on dropping espionage charges. US District Court Judge Aileen Cannon was asked by Trump's lawyers to toss out the classified documents case against him. In one motion, they argued the charges against him were too vague.  She disagreed.  She has yet to rule on a second motion that the Presidential Records Act requires the case to be dismissed.  We'll talk to journalist and political analyst Michael Shure about all of this and more.  Here comes Friday Fabulous Florida in all it's glory.  It's like People Behaving Badly infused with a special sauce only Florida can create.  Culture Blaster, Michael Snyder, will be in to talk entertainment from the coolest live shows to the movies and sports too.  He's packing up his bag full of ding words to bring along for his ride on the rainbow.  The Mark Thompson Show3/15/24

This week I'm joined by Tom Patri, John Kennedy, Martin Chuck, and Chris Mitchell. TP and I get into fan behavior and whether we've all lost our collective minds following the Wasted Management Open, Charlie Woods dealing with unruly fans at a pre-qualifying event for the Cognizant Classic, and the Duke/Wake Forest incident where a player got injured when Wake Forest fans stormed the court. John Kennedy is one of THE most nationally and locally decorated and respected PGA Professionals in the game. John talks about his years as the Director of Golf at Westchester Country Club, the rich history there, the time Gene Sarazen defeated Walter Hagan at the Golf Championship of the World and then immediately went to the hospital for an emergency appendectomy, plus what it's like being the host for 18 PGA Tour events and majors on the Champions and LPGA Tours. Martin Chuck has been named a Top 100 Instructor every year since 2017. He has also created several of the best training aids on the market. We start out talking about how he shagged balls for Moe Norman at age 9 and then took lessons from the great George Knudson. We hear about his college golf days at New Mexico State playing alongside 2002 PGA Champion Rich Beem. Martin has created training aids that actually will help you play better. PGA Tour Players like Justin Rose and Rory McIlroy have been seen using them out on the practice range. We dive into a few of them and what Tour players plus the rest of us will get when you make them a part of your practice routine. I wrap up this week's show with a visit from Chris Mitchell. Chris is one of the foremost experts in fantasy sports. He is also about to start writing for NewEngland.golf. He will be reviewing courses all along Cape Cod. If you're headed over there this summer, you'll want to hear what Chris has to say.

People misbehaving in public is on the rise. Whether they're throwing tantrums or they're throwing drinks, it seems that there's at least one such viral incident every day. When did we unlearn how to be civil to one another? And more importantly, what can we as a society do to fix it? Author Kirsty Sedgman, a cultural studies scholar at the University of Bristol, joins 5 Things to unpack this disturbing trend. How do you navigate the holidays? Specifically, how do you get through holiday parties? Our friend Emily discusses the multitude of holiday gatherings she has to attend this weekend and gives advice on how to persevere on today's Emily Explains It All. Flying cars could be a thing by the year 2030. Matt tells us on today's Weird or Wired that a manufacturer claims an affordable flying car is possible in less than ten years. Yeah. Okay. I think we're all in agreement when we say "I'll believe it when I see it."  And a local Irish pub just opened this past week in Austin, and it's already having its share of troubles. Listen to today's People Behaving Badly to hear the scoop and listen to CJ's verdict on who is to blame for the shenanigans surrounding this pub.  Ok goodbye.Support the show: https://www.101x.com/justmattandcj/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Emily recently had a bizarre experience in the small, Texas town of Smithville - find out more on Em's Leftovers. CJ might have found the single most annoying airplane experience ever - find out more on today's People Behaving Badly. And Spenny quizzes CJ on how well he knows our state capitals.  We also unveil the new game Edit or Bet It. On today's Clickbait Corner Emily brought in a list exploring Halloween costume predictions for this year. Usually on Clickbait Corner we find plenty of things to argue about with the lists, but this time? Well, we think it's a pretty accurate prediction of potential costumes.  Matt has some bad news regarding how crazy artificial intelligence has become on today's Weird or Wired, Emily has been having a cute relationship with her neighbor recently on today's Leftovers, and CJ is furious about the media spin concerning a story about people boiling chicken in Nyquil on today's People Behaving Badly.  Also, Spenny went to Disney World recently, and he had a sad day that he wants to explore in today's Group Therapy. Will it be relatable? Will it be understandable? Or is he just a sad sack who can't have fun doing anything? Is he even having fun typing out this description that he's been ordered to type by his domineering boss CJ Morgan? What is fun, anyway?  Okay then. Listen in to find out just how wrong you are (even though you should be right because this would be so cool).  And Emily had a couple of firsts this recently. CJ and Spenny got up to some classic/traditional "shock jock" antics on last Friday's show, and that is kinda making them feel a little guilty. During a contest for a pair of My Chemical Romance tickets, CJ forced listeners to attempt to "convince Spence" to give them the prize. Spenny agreed when a young listener said she'd tattoo something on herself if she won. So, well, they gave her the tickets. Spenny argues that he was just doing what his boss asked of him (because I was, damn it!), but CJ still wants to shift blame. Who do you think is at fault?  Do you want to know what a person who has no knowledge on a topic but still gives their opinion is called? Well, we find that out (and more) on today's Did You Know.  And on today's People Behaving Badly, a local sportscaster uses a phrase that could easily fit into a sexier, more X-rated film production. When used normally, though, it doesn't sound that bad. Only someone with a perverted mind like CJ (or you) would even think that such phrasing could be used sexually. For shame. For shame! Frances Frei is a Professor of Technology and Operations Management at Harvard Business School, and her research involves understanding how leaders create the conditions for organizations and individuals to thrive. Frances discusses her new book, Unleashed: The Unapologetic Leader’s Guide to Empowering Everyone Around You. She dives into fixing broken cultures by creating an environment of psychological safety.   Key Takeaways [3:50] Trust can be lost in three critical ways: authenticity wobble, logic wobble, or an empathy wobble. [5:50] The logic wobble typically means you have sound logic but you lost the person in communication somewhere. [11:40] When it comes to delegation, it’s on the leader to delegate well and to really examine where the process can be improved if tasks aren’t being performed as expected. [12:35] Take radical accountability for your team member’s success. [13:35] To achieve high-performing teams, they need to have psychological safety. In this climate, it can be hard to navigate this safety because people become guarded by another person’s opposite opinion. [18:55] Cultures really like a redemption story. [21:25] It’s on your shoulders, it’s your obligation, to build trust when there is no trust. [25:35] If you want people within an organization to behave and act differently, you must get them to think differently. [29:15] Cultural values can become weaponized. When this happens, you have to scrap it and create a new one. [35:00] When it comes to diversity and inclusion, Frances wishes those words were reversed. If you are inclusive of difference, more and more difference is going to want to come and flourish. [38:00] We are instinctively tribal and try to find people who are similar to us. This means if we can’t think differently, we have to go through our instinctive nature and put in new processes to help us think differently. [41:30] Listener challenge: Seek a room where you’re the least smart person in that room.   Quotable Quotes “If I can delegate, I will be better off. Now, I have to learn how to delegate well.” “Whether or not you trust me, it’s my obligation.” “Culture can fix good people behaving badly.” “Culture exists in our minds and it manifests in our behaviors. Culture can change through education.” “It started as diversity and inclusion, I wish we could reverse those words. I can bring in diversity, but if I’m not inclusive of it, it doesn’t make anything better.” “I don’t want to take my difference and learn to be similar. I want to learn how to be different.”   Resources Mentioned Frances’s website & book: Unleashed: The Unapologetic Leader’s Guide to Empowering Everyone Around You Frances on LinkedIn “The Coddling of the American Mind,” by Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt   The Leadership Podcast is Sponsored by:     Cultivate Grit. With a reassuring intro from the most dangerous show in the world, Hank Watson's Garage Hour gets right down to gearhead, with Fords, junkyards (like A&B and 67 Truck in San Diego), tales of fine salvage, and the DUIs that get some of those vehicles there.  The plan falls apart after that, with a Crag-infested BLEEPing roll-in that Mayor Bloomberg would like to ban, followed by hobbits.  Yeah.  .45 Phil likes hobbits. There's also a bit of seriousness in this episode, as Hostus Maximus Justin Fort and cohosts Crag Maxwell and .45 Phil speak up about some of the unspoken truths of the Sandy Hook shooting, including the need for the media and video game makers to admit that they're popularizing violence, and parents' need to assert their role as parent and not their kids' best friends. Not to keep it too dark, the Garage Hour goons rocket back to the Gearhead Planet with not so smart meters, Phil's Tank of the Week (the nasty Soviet Tunguska), and America's solution to Ruskie tanks, the A-10.  Then it's all dogfights and Spads and beer and Bilsteins. Damn right you want it.
